LOLs! They completely ignored Reina's confession of being "in love" with Sensei in episode 10 which is a fact and preferred to believe the subtext. You're sailing in a sea covered in mist with only a search light and without compass or a map. |

Great episode as always, my mind is still blown, Kyoani has my respect. I bet it is going to be the friendly type love. Yeah I seriously doubt that there will be romantic love between the two. And Taki sensei pretty much made Kaori admit that Reina was better |

Yeah, they are sure doing it intentionally but what matters is that the meaning of that scene was different. It was confession of love for music that knows no compromise. You can tell from this scene where Kumiko finally realized why she is playing and that she wants to continue with it. Great episode, by the way. In the end the audition was resolved in the best possible way. Now onto big event. Edit: And Asuka sure has terrible personality with her always non-conflict attitude. She wants to be friends with everyone yet she cannot even tell them what she is thinking. It's not like her evasive answers wasn't noticed. But I guess sometimes it's actually better not say anything. |

It's obviously 2 gay girls being confused by all the heteronormativity Japan has going on, and mistaking the closest thing to het love they experienced - admiration and friendship - for actual love. It happens a lot. People are so quick to jump back onto the yuri train. Just keep your expectations low, guys. More than open ended is not gonna happen. |

The Kumiko x Shuichi ship is weak right now, they need to pull off a miracle in those last 2 episodes to make me care. mangakam said: DarcyD said: Ok, why are people still saying that this is yuri baiting when this has been going on since episode 8 really??? T this interpretation is so weak, Reina didn't even mention Taki in this episode, it was all about herself and the conflict with Kaori/Yuuko. I don't think this audition constitutes much of a confession, anyways. I've been convinced that Kumiko is making fun of Reina's confession towards her in episode 8. I feel like a lot of people have their hetero goggles on here (LoK joke, sorry still bitter about Makorra not being canon), why would Kumiko be talking about Taki when they haven't shown his face for more than 10 sec this whole episode??? That's like bringing up Shuuichi in this convo when he's been missing for 2 eps like??? I believe that Kumiko was returning the gesture Reina made in Episode 8 when she said she fell in love with Kumiko. Kumiko was saying she has fallen in love with Reina as well. I think the whole thing is just too gay to ignore and not hop on this ship, because, even if they don't mean romantically because srsly they are very young, I think they are experiencing something stronger than friendship. I mean, Kumiko isn't even this open or touching with Sapphire or Hazuki. Sapphire and Hazuki also make up excuses so that Kumiko can excuse herself to go see Reina I mean?? Uuuuh? Wasn't that another payback like the one in ep.6 "That seems like something you'd say", I'm sure it's like that, and not about the Taki thing. Why can't you all admit that their relantionship is awesome? It's useless, no one can ruin this moment. But, I'm the only one who likes Yuuko? I know right. I mean, if you want to call it bait it's fine and all but at least don't twist their words. She obviously said "confession of love" because Reina said the same thing to her in episode 8, as another payback. They have a great bond right now that consists a lot of saying stuff like that. |

Yuuko is quite annoying, why to go that far for her senpai? Unless she is gay for Kaori(she probably is) I cant think of her behavior as something logical. Also, weren't all the members supposed to choose? Only like 4 people clapped. And about the confession they were indeed talking about Taki, just because no one mentioned Taki it doesn't take away that fact. But gr8 b8 KyoAni. |

What an awesome episode. This show gets incrementally better each episode. I'll have to re-watch this series right after if finishes to see what the impact is if I semi-marathon the eps. The build-up to the rehearsal and the rehearsal itself was some excellent writing and animation. I plugged in headphones to block the ambient noise from outside my window and the trumpet comparison was just great. There was almost a little fake when Reina plays the first note that made me think for a split second that she was going to throw the rehearsal, but then she really soars with her smooth and heartfelt playing. I'm another one of about three on this forum that has a little bit of sympathy for Yuuko/Ribbon Girl. I liked the brief flashback showing Yuuko and Kaori in the previous year. Without spoiling it for anyone who hasn't watched ep 11, Yuuko is conflicted in her feelings, divided between what she thinks is best for Kaori and what is best for the band. It's unfortunate she chooses a dishonorable route, but entirely believable and consistent with human nature. |

Episode discussion as it happened. The episode starts with the band members actually practising! There were so many of us doubted Taki-sensei when he called for a second audition. Many of us even labeled him as a weak personality, but the beginning of the episode marred any doubt that was thrown at him. His decision to call for a second audition was required to get his authority over the band members who started doubting him being biased and favouring Reina. Shuuichi cannot concentrate with his music anymore. Shuuichi was always shown as character with a lot of composure. People who have a lot of composure can actually observe others well. Recall how he shared his thoughts on other band members with Kumiko in the earlier episodes. Yet, now he is a complete wreck. He can't even concentrate on his own music because he never realized how his life would be without sharing a bench in the evening or a train ride back home from school sitting next to the girl he always liked. Midori and Hazuki suggesting Kumiko to invite Reina. That is how friends should be. Midori and Hazuki, despite having no interaction with Reina, have realized how Kumiko is shaken by Reina's apparent predicament. They didn't think twice before giving her a push to invite Reina to join with them. This also shows that behind the scene, their friendship has grown. They have quietly but surely developed strong affection towards Kumiko. Both girl admitting how nice she is. There were some of us who went on to dislike Kaori-senpai for not doing enough to stop Yuuko or even deciding to partake in the second audition. Yet, both Reina and Kumiko, our two adored girls didn't hesitate to say how they both think of Kaori-senpai. Asuka wouldn't admit who was better. You cannot take off her mask easily. If you follow the conversation between Asuka-senpai and Kaori-senpai, you will notice that Asuka-senpai leaves a vague indication that she thinks Taki-sensei chose the right candidate "I think the better one should play. After all, that's how apparently Taki-sensei is deciding.", only to follow-up with remarks that made it even harder to actually figure out. But if anyone, Kaori-senpai knew the answer to that question herself, probably better than Asuka-senpai, yet she decided that she wouldn't want to hear those words from Asuka-senpai. Why is that? We found that out when she was with Haruka-senpai. Yuuko and Natsuki-senpai's conversation. Natsuki-senpai letting Yuuko know what a terrible thing she has done, only to make things more miserable for Kaori-senpai. And we get to see some flashback that is elaborated later. Kumiko still cannot talk with Shuuichi. Kumiko looked at Shuuchi. It is true that there was no indication of romance. But there was probably a tiny bit feeling of guilt. She didn't think it will be this hard to approach her childhood friend ever since she allowed Hazuki to go after him. Yuuko bowing to Reina. Kaori never got her chance. I didn't really like Yuuko until she bowed to Reina. Bowing down to someone who is junior in rank/age in Japanese society is the highest form of sacrificing one's pride. Her actions were uncalled for, it is true, but you cannot deny the fact that she has decide to accept such humiliation for Kaori-senpai's sake, who never got her chance. The flashback is elaborated during this part when she was overlooked for the solo performance because it was decided by seniority. The flashback also includes how Kaori-senpai cared for her kouhai as she bowed for them. Yuuko noticed those things. But I am glad that Reina decided to stick with her belief that whoever better should play the part. Midori and Hazuki approve Kumiko to go after Reina! Loved this part. No need to explain why as I already mentioned when they encouraged Kumiko to invite Reina before. Just two words: Beautiful friendship. Some of the fans here wouldn't see beyond. Yuuko and Kaori-senpai's little conversation before the audition was short-lived. But seeing Yuuko start running in tears (and bumping on to Natsuki) made me question how some fans decided to overlook something so warmly executed. They are both supporting characters, I know. And thus neither should be seen as important as Reina and Kumiko. But this girl here admired Kaori-senpai for valid reasons. She saw her senpai bowing for her sake, which made her not to hesitate to bow to Reina. She saw her being overlooked despite being the better one. Kick me on the teeth but I find it really hard to believe some fans rejoiced in her tears. Kaori-senpai and Haruka-senpai's conversation. The three girls (including Asuka-senpai) make an unbelievably pleasant side story. The author have written the side characters (in anime i.e. *comment on Asuka-senpai at the end of the post) story so surprisingly well. We saw a conversation between two girls here who have been friends in their entire high school life, which is coming to an end in few months. Their conversation included Asuka-senpai and it also showed even now how mysterious she is to them. The moment Haruka-senpai put her hand on Kaori-senpai's head and lean her head towards hers, I thought — I wouldn't mind seeing an anime just based on these three girls. Kumiko and Reina's conversation! From "You are going to become special, aren't you?" to "This is a confession of love, after all." Loved every second of it. I was left in a world out of this world (caught by one of my colleagues during the lunch-break, watching an anime on my phone, haha, and two girls too close for my own comfort haha!). After what happened in the top of the hills, this was Kumiko's turn to give Reina the push. Episode 8 was made for this moment. It wasn't visually mesmerizing but their playful conversation left me star-struck. And finally the audition! Some of us are questioning the integrity of the band members. But more than their integrity, it was the conflict of emotion and fact here. The fact that Reina is better played a big role for them not applauding when Kaori-senpai's name was called. And their emotion took over when Reina's name was called. Their silence was actually Reina's victory. Because remember what Michie-sensei said "Music is nice. You cannot lie about it. When it's good, you cannot but admit it's good." And because music doesn't lie, Taki-sensei was right to go for the second audition. And he confirmed it with asking Kaori-senpai if she would play the sole. And because music doesn't lie, (and of course since she is a wonderful person), Kaori-senpai gave the role to Reina. Lollo36 said: I still wish for an episode that's dedicated to Asuka, I'm interested in seeing how she ended up being the way she is, and she's been slowly falling behind in the race for best girl. It may be too late now, second season plz. *Asuka-senpai is one of the six main characters in the original novel (along with Shuuichi). Bumping my overall score for the anime to a 9/10. This has been the best show for Spring 2015 for me. |

So much drama over a short solo. MUSIC IS SERIOUS BUSINESS! I preferred Reina's performance since she had better phrasing and didn't cut off her notes quickly at the end like Kaori did. Kaori & Reina's lips right before playing show a lot too. Kaori's lips trembled right before playing while Reina's was more still and controlled. I like how Taki-sensei didn't care that Ribbon-chan was crying her heart out. That was cold, yo! xD |

Refer to one of the previous moments how she thought Reina wasn't at fault but, Midori said she knew that, however, was concerned whether it was really worth for the solo position that may derail their band's performance. The story is very well-written and the anime is masterly adapted, you know. |

Boy this show is mediocre. First off, Jesus fucking Christ KyoAni. Make up your fucking minds about this stupid yuri horseshit. I literally don't even care anymore. This blatant changing back and forth is beyond amateur. It's one of the oh so many reasons why this show will be getting a 5 or 6 from me. I find my self just cringing more and more as each new episode comes out. The characters are just so darn unlikable. And that's the key to a good drama, is that we need to legitimately care about these characters and I find myself not giving a single fuck about any of them. Hell, the only likable characters are the two comic relief ones in Sapphire and Hazuki. But the most unlikable is Reina. She's completely unbearable with her pretentious sounding monologues. Not to mention whenever she talks literally the entire episode's pace comes to a standstill and it feels like we're waiting for her crap to be over. Compared to other dramas this season, OreGairu completely outclasses this series in every aspect save for art and animation. As for the episode itself, I found it pretty boring. The outcome was fairly obvious when they started to play, and judging by Kaori's kind disposition she would give up the part regardless if she got it or not. I just can't wait for this to be over at this point. KyoAni, please just give us another season of Amagi instead next time. |

All of these supporting characters are making me fucking despise this show more and more. Last week: "oh we're all going to bitch and moan because we think Taki-sensei rigged the audition. We DEMAND a re-do". *Taki-, being the WAY overly nice teacher he is, agrees. AND allows the class to vote on it. So all of the bitchers can be at ease* This week: Both play. Kousaka obviously better. Gets more claps because she is nice and popular. All of the crybabies got to see for themselves that Reina was better, but those same people who were crying foul are now dead silent because they don't want to admit they were wrong and hurt Kaori's feelings. What a bunch of fucking. bull. shit. The yuribait is also still overwhelmingly strong. I don't know if that particular scene was in the LNs or not, but either way, KyoAni/the Author/both are just doing this shit pointlessly now. Confession of love, really? Because that shit sure changed quick a few vols down the road. Since this is finally confirmed 13 eps, and obviously isn't going to hit the later novel material, I wonder if KyoAni might end up going with an anime original ending, since they rarely do sequels. That would be the legit only way to make all of this baiting bullshit have a purpose. kawaii-despair said: Maerow said: I came here only to say this.Ribbon's tears are delicious. PREACH!! KyoAni is doing absolutely fantastic work, everything looks fuckin great, if every studio would use the benefits of CG in the same way as KyoAni is (look at this, there is no visible 3D models, you know how hard it is to achieve that?!) , than I wouldn't mind it at all. This episode was good, but I feel like things slowed down a bit. For those calling out Kaori for scheming and trying to take the solo spot for herself, take off your biased goggles will ya. Said it last week, will say it again, Kaori only wants whats best for the band as a whole, but that doesn't mean she has to admit she is inferior to anyone just because someone else says so. She worked hard to get where she was because of her love for the trumpet. She never slacked on her practice. Never complained when the lazy seniors in the previous year unfairly took her Solo, simply based on seniority. She continued to practice for the Solo part even after Taki decided to give Reina the part initially, because she doesn't believe that she herself is inferior, and when she got the chance for a re-audition, she was confident enough in her own hard work to take it. Even after the audition, where most of the band were picking Kaori to play solo on the account of the collective of things that she does for the band, as compared to Reina who goes purely on her talent alone, Kaori had a small enough ego to decline that solo spot, hence admitting that even she felt Reina played better than her, for the betterment of the band as a collective whole. Perhaps because I watched this episode right before watching this years NBA finals, but I feel like there are similarities between the episode and real life. Kaori sacrificed her position for the betterment of the band as a whole. I liken her to Andre Iguodala of the Golden State Warriors, who sacrificed a starting position, but stayed prepared for the big moments, for the achievement of becoming an NBA Champion and the Finals MVP. No doubt about it to me personally, Kaori is the REAL MVP. Give this girl some love and respect, y'all! Quit it with the hating. Face it, had Taki been at the band one year prior, she may have already been playing the Solo part considering her skills over her sempai. He's a modern-day instructor who acknowledges talent above all. Taki is smart enough to not follow the age-old convention of Seniority and Heirarchy that seems prevailant in Japan. I really like what Taki brings to the table. For another NBA reference, he's like the anime version of Steve Kerr. However, I also think that if Kaori had acted selfishly, he really would have given the Solo to Kaori instead. I personally don't believe that he would have pushed the Solo to Reina if most of the band AND Kaori had decided it would be hers. He wanted the auditions to be judged fairly, but if the results had gone in Kaori's favor, he wouldn't have been able to contest (on the account of it looking biased). Kaori's sacrifice is in severe contrast to Yuuko's selfish request of Reina. She is asking Reina to step down based on her own selfish desire to play alongside a trumpet section that is spearheaded by Kaori, regardless of talent. I would say that her views are narrow-minded and outdated, but considering what happened with Kaori in the previous year, I can understand where she is coming from. Still, it doesn't take away from her being a selfish little girl that she is, and I'm glad that Reina declined her request to stand down. Oh and the Yuri is REAL! Between Yuuko x Natsuki and Kaori x Asuka that is!! :P As of this season, they've done a pretty poor job in conveying any romance apart from Hazuki's one sided crush. I don't doubt what Novel Purists expect to be the conclusion of whom ends up with whom, but as of this season, I haven't really seen that much development in the much-promoted ShuichixKumiko pairing. As of this episode, I'd be hard-pressed to accept them together in any capacity other than close friends, and they'll have to do some serious focusing if they want me to accept said pairing. Long story short: the development between these two in a romantic capacity so far has been piss poor. I'm really looking forward to more development for Asuka. Right now she's still the big X-Factor background story-wise. She hides her own opinions way too much, and adamantly refuses to face confrontation if it slaps her in the face. That she wouldn't even encourage Kaori (probably knowing that Reina was more skilled) indicates a lot in regards to her mentality though. She wants to be the best, regardless of whether its with her friends or with more talented people. However, I still think there's more to her than meets the eye. I look forward to finding out about it. As for those who are talking about not many clapping after Reina's performance. If you've seen Shigatsu, you'll know that sometimes the person playing does it just so well, that the silence after the performance is in itself the best compliment (because the audience are too immersed to react). I feel that this was somewhat the case for Reina. Overall, I enjoyed this episode, but not as much as some of the previous ones. As always, they seem to be putting my Midori into a more supporting character role now (can any Novel readers tell me if this will be the case throughout from here on out?). Oh, and don't mind the last sentence but: #DUBNATION!!! |

if the band isn't going to decide, then its up to the performers themselves to decide who was better after hearing each other play. It feels so real and good to see Kaori knowing that Reina plays better and decided that she was fitted for the role. Episode was just simply breathtakingly real |

It's nothing romantic.I feel like a lot of people have their hetero goggles on here (LoK joke, sorry still bitter about Makorra not being canon), why would Kumiko be talking about Taki when they haven't shown his face for more than 10 sec this whole episode??? Isn't that what good friends do for you when you're crushing on someone??? Is this not obvious already?? |

This episode. The raw emotion, the animation, the character interactions... I applaud you, KyoAni. You guys really rock. Amazing. Just amazing. Everything was spectacular. This show stands out, I don't know. Please make it reach top 50. It deserves it. And I loved that Kumiko x Reina scene, but please guys, it was the continuation to Reina's confession in episode 8. I am not saying you shouldn't love it. Please do, but please don't be disappointed later if Shuichi x Kumiko gets more focus. That ship is more subtle but it IS there. Kumiko is noticing Shuichi ever since Hazuki confessed to him. That's the main ship in the novel and it should be the main ship here as well. If it won't be then that's disrespectful to the original author (I doubt it will be developed in the last episodes tho. Saying just in-case because there might be a 2nd season. It needs one so bad) |

Right, the only thing that points towards romance in that scene is the "confession" line, the rest of it screams "friendship". |

Stop fantasizing about nonexistent romance and go to sleep. It's not gay until they marry each other, the rest is just subtext and bait. |

Whoooa! For a moment there, I thought things were about to go yuri mode. LOL! |

How ironic. Kaori didn't get to play even though she was better because her seniors had priority. Now, she's trying to do the exact same thing to Reina. Wow, I can understand how Yuuko feels, but man was she really getting on my nerves for trying to manipulate everyone for what she believes Kaori wants (only to fulfill her own selfish agenda). Maybe I'm just cynical and apathetic by nature, but I don't believe that someone can obsess (care) about someone to that extent. All in all, a very satisfying episode. Kaori had to be the one to refuse the part to drive it into the heads of all the others that she admits that Reina is better. Having the audience or Taki-sensei decide would all but ruin everything. Well played. |

The other day I saw a picture of Takei Sensei looking down at Yuuko, then another panel of him blood-splattered with her ribbon on his head. I can't find it D: Anybody have it? |

Well played. You might want to try and change up that bold part. Kaori didn't try to do nothing to no one. She did her initial audition just like Reina did. She accepted Taki's initial decision, but kept practicing in case a chance for her came again. She did not force the issue, nor did she manipulate anyone else into forcing the issue. The one who made Taki reconsider his own decision was selfish Yuuko, only her. Kaori only took the second chance to prove her own worth. Anyone would have done so. Even in the second audition, when more of the band was voting for her, she did not "try to do the same thing to Reina". She deferred the Solo part to Reina by herself, even after Taki asked if she would play the Solo. Kaori has shown time and again that she does what is best for the Band as a whole. Don't be putting her down just because she stayed prepared in case there was a chance for her to prove her own worth to others. She has shown great humility and no shame in admitting to all present that Reina was more skilled than herself, and even when the Solo part COULD have been awarded to her, she only thought of what was best for the Band and GAVE the part to Reina. We're talking about a society where hierarchy and seniority is the norm and traditional expectation. Kaori's actions ultimately went against such norms and traditional thinking. Seriously guys, show Kaori some more respect! |

It really feels like Reina has grown a lot this episode. Reina previously said she could not understand the feelings of the majority who crowd together, but it seemed more that she did not want to understand rather than that she could not comprehend it. "that's what makes things a bit hard." After actually speaking with Kaori, Reina can no longer keep up this illusion that she had about everyone else. At times, it's difficult being ambitious, her aims put her at conflict with the rest of the band. I'm sure Reina herself finds it hard to put herself before everyone else, she stereotyped the rest of the band as nothing more than gossip mongers precisely because it made it easier to trivialize their feelings. I'm glad that Reina has come to acknowledge others' feelings and not compromise on her ambitions either. I hope we'll see her apologize for her prior actions as well. Kaori still best girl though. |
