Yeah, I've read some of her short stories in translation. They might have been all post-war, can't remember, but I've read about her early work. As the Wikipedia article mentions, she wrote Yaneura no Ni-Shoujo in 1919 (!), in which a pair of girls are definitely in love and live as a couple after graduation, for example. Oh, and that respectable status didn't last forever. In the mid-30s, Class S and similar European novels for girls were censored. Yoshiya no longer had her Taishou celebrity and had to keep a low profile.

But I don't think Class S is all that different from the subtext you like. It was about, and for, adolescent girls figuring out their emotions; the fuzziness between friendship and love or admiration and lust that young people always experience, but possibly more if they were queer so in a heteronormative, sexist society. It was about the reality of life in a country that as you said even today is behind on LGBT and womens' rights today (as seen in true-story manga like Honey & Honey or "Aishi Kimi ni Sasageru").

And, Class S kinda evolved into Heisei schoolgirl yuri. There's no clear boundary between the two. The fact that yuri with a heavy Class S imprint still comes out is not nearly as unusual than other stuff in anime/manga (think most depictions of school life) or popular culture anywhere, full of old tropes and homages to past work.

Hey, about Class S: I think when Class S stuff is made today, it's only because of the genre's history; in novels for tween girls that are highly derivative of the classics, and rather ironically in manga for older audiences. But Class S never really was so much negative about same-sex love as real—for the period it began in. From its Taishou beginnings, though, it was subverted by its leading authors—like the essentially openly lesbian Nobuko Yoshiya.

Gangsta/10. Saved. I am glad I now own the original gengar's original signature. Originally.

Just go full NEET mode, OG. You'll finish it all in at least 50 years I'm sure. Then you can wallow in despair over how you wasted your entire life watching stupid Japanese cartoons.
If you really want to set your backlog back, start watching Legend of Galactic Heroes. Wooo!
Cure_Inazuma May 23, 2015 8:02 AM
You're gonna finish it. Even if it's against your will. You can trust me on that.
Yes, I want your autograph. Also draw a picture of a Gengar next to it. The original Gengar of course.

I'd only sell all of it if it contains pairings I especially like. ;P
Doesn't necessarily have to be on the level of NozoEri, there's more than enough pairings that I like.

Mushishi's the best one out of those three. Ping Pong is also fun, Death Parade is in my opinion the weakest out of those three.
Yuuki_snow May 15, 2015 4:48 AM
Haha, well said there. Then again I'd gladly give up a little bit of humanity if that meant that we'd be getting more anime with actual yuri in it. Well, alright, maybe it depends on what's getting adapted too, but you get the idea. ;P
Huh, that's something. Would never happen in my case - I don't think I ever watched two anime in the 8+ category in a row to begin with, so that'd be quite an achievement if it were me.
Yuuki_snow May 11, 2015 10:17 AM
True, must be easier. But oh well, that's just personal habits and all. I'm content with the way I'm scoring things and enjoying (or not enjoying) anime. ;P
Yuuki_snow May 9, 2015 3:27 AM
Oh. Right. Those guys. I've seen some of those around as well. Never going to understand that mentality, to be honest.
Yuuki_snow May 8, 2015 7:57 AM
Thanks! Ah, chances are you'd have noticed it, heh. And of course, no better way to celebrate it than that - NozoxEli always makes things better. ;P

And it's not only because of the quality of the scans themselves. For the first few volumes you should be okay, but later (around volume 5~6 or so), they even start messing up the order of the chapters since they uploaded the entire volume instead of separating by chapter.
Yuuki_snow May 7, 2015 11:56 AM
Oh, I'm fine by now, thankfully. Would have sucked if I were sick for my birthday tomorrow, haha. '^^

But yeah, society seems like a good bet. It's not like most of it is that open towards homosexuality in the first place. Well... unfortunately it's been like this for ages.

Oh, and yeah. Mainly because it's all 37 volumes. That's really the best option though, given that the quality of Berserk's online scans, especially the early ones, are a bit... well, lacking.

hmm.. yy agree

Sorry for only replying so late, but I didn't feel all that well during the last few days, so I'm only getting to it now.

But yeah, they usually are that way. I'll never get them in that regard.
Gender bending yuri fan art definitely isn't easy to find - if I find them, it's usually on pixiv, but given that it's a japanese site you pretty much need to know what you're actually doing if you want to find something suitable there. Occasionally you'll find the rare fanart somewhere else, of course. Either for pairings where gender bending is already pretty widespread - like in the Haruhi Suzumiya fandom, for example. And then there's the occasional fanart to anime that has been airing recently that takes this approach. Most of the time if it has Shounen Ai elements and people like the relationship between the characters, but aren't into Shounen Ai, so they twist it a bit. Slaine x Inaho from last season's Aldnoah;Zero for example. The fandom can get a bit creative there at times. I remember Shinji Ikari being a popular target as well.
It’s time to ditch the text file.
