Inio Asano, the acclaimed mangaka behind Goodnight Punpun, has his work animated for the first time with Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction. However, since it's being handled by a relatively new studio, there are some concerns... regardless let's see.

Out of nowhere, a massive ship appears above Tokyo Bay, triggering a state of emergency. Amid the chaos, Nobuo Koyama, an employee at a publishing company, finds himself caught in the spaceship's crash. Years later, he wakes up, with no memory of the disaster. He's greeted by two people, Kimika Ando and Hako Shimoda. Now, he's determined to piece together what happened and find his kids.

It's become quite common to see stories about dads braving a post-apocalyptic world to protect or find their kid. But this show takes a gentler approach from what it seems. Nobuo, our MC, isn't a tough action hero; he just wants to find his daughter and help others along the way. The atmosphere of the show is really important, setting the tone for the whole world and the characters in it. Even though the world is tough, Nobuo's kindness shines through. Sure, the animation might not be perfect in some parts, but what really matters is how well they tell the story. And so far, this new studio seems to be doing a good job with that.

A promising start, and while the real action might kick off in the next episode, this one sets things up nicely.

Hello, I was very excited to see Dead Dead animated and I thought the chapter was very good, my only doubt is what happened to the music of Ano and Lilas Ikuta (ze ze ze zettai Seiiki) I have it on Spotify and I thought it was going to be the opening. 4/5, i miss clicked and put 1/5 my bad.

The exposition was such a bore and unfortunately it feels very restricted to the manga paneling which makes the pacing a chore to watch as it would have probably been better read. Picked up near the end though which caught me off guard.

I'm so glad this manga (and any Inio Asano manga in general) is finally getting an anime! So cool to finally see his artstyle animated, I think it looks great
It's interesting for them to start with this part as a prologue, it might be a bit weird for people who haven't read the manga but the main story is not really like this part at all, but I still liked how they did it
It's kind of weird how they're dropping this series and I hope it picks up in popularity because it deserves to, but the way they're releasing it is not doing many favors for it unfortunately
But either way I'm super excited for this and I love it so far

Looks like they switched up some of the content! I’m fine with that, although it felt weird seeing some of the late-story stuff right at the beginning

asano inio's DDDD is finally here!! loved the manga and if this was part of spring 2024's lineup, this would easily be my favorite start to the season but bit of a shame that it started quite late. i did not expect this episode to start at this point in the story and with focus on kadode's dad though, already a different approach compared to the start of the manga but i think it was still well done. tsuda kenjiro as nobua was a really good choice as well.
great start to this adaptation, excited to see our actual main characters presumably from the next episode.

Episode 0, Dead Dead Demons Deeded Destruction
I've been waiting for this anime for 3 and a half years and honestly it feels quite unbelievable to be watching it right now!
This is a pretty weird place to start the anime at, as it kind of spoils a lot of the events but also brings some intrigue for what happened before this.
The animation for this episode disappointed me, as although the background art was fantastic the art direction was kinda... off? Animation was stiff at times and characters would go off model a lot. Now this could be just because I'm not used to the animation style yet but so far, it leaves a lot to be desired. This short run of the manga wasn't really my favourite as it just throws a ton of exposition at you which also contributes to it being a weird starting point.
Regardless, I had a ton of fun and I'm really excited to be taken on this journey once again!

So... The desicion to adapt most of the last arc first is better for those chapters and as a way to introduce the world of the story, but I'm interested in seeing if it would be good for the rest of the story since as a manga reader I saw heavy spoilers to the rest of the manga, but maybe anime only watchers will not see that as spoilers or hurt their watch.

The desicion to call it episode 0 was by far the right choice for tone reasons.

I love how they adapted Kadode's father and most of the episode
my only complaint is that the final scene was lackluster compared to the manga but it was a given with how they decided to adapt and a fine sacrifice.

Also strong gundam witch from mercury prologue vibe and as a big fan of both it made me happy

By the way, manga readers-do you agree the song in the end is pure fanservice?

Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction is here in animated form and it feels a bit weird for multiple reasons. Although I'm not an Inio Asano fan, this manga was one of the first series that I bought physical volumes of on a whim 7 years ago without knowing anything about it and I still have it with me to this day and to be fair, this is probably the only real work that I found to be decent of his to this day (not a fan of Punpun, Solanin and his other stuff to be honest). It's flawed from what I remember from it years ago, but was interesting in phases and did have an intriguing setting and fun characters at the start. Hopefully watching this can improve my opinion on the series as a whole. Furthermore, while I do appreciate the decision to re-air the movies as regular episodes on Crunchyroll with additional episodes there which I hope makes the pacing a lot better and more fitting for TV, the lack of real promotion for Inio Asano's first work being officially adapted and released on Crunchyroll could have been a lot better to be honest.

This is episode 0 and does cover something a lot later than where it normally starts and while it isn't the most thrilling, exciting or even interesting episode out there (felt slow especially in the first half), it does the job of introducing the world and transitioning viewers into what this world and series has in store for the actual main stuff to happen later on. Not the most charismatic people out there either but that should be made up for in the upcoming episodes and ultimately, the atmosphere and setting was meant to shine the most and it did as a whole. Animation wasn't the greatest but for an episode like this, I could live with it, and the music and background art complements the show well from first impressions. Fairly new studio is in charge so I'll see if this can deliver for the main episodes that count a lot compared to this one.

The exposition was a lot but I get why the show adapted this at the start for a setup, and to be fair, the mystique of the world itself and the political situations involved in such bizarre times makes the exposition a bit more interesting compared to some of the other anime I've seen with heavy exposition recently. If it is done all the time, then it can backfire but because this was so new, I can more than live with it here as the show did also visually showcase its world well enough to complement the exposition taking place.

As a start, it was alright and did the job in acting as a setup for the world. I don't know if it was necessarily the 'correct' decision to do it the way they did but I don't mind the idea of this either for the time being. Do think the next episode will be a lot more fun and engaging as the actual start to the series, hopefully I come to like this overall series more than I did originally (since this is an Asano series at least worth exploring for me for the time being unless it aged poorly).

Mostly buildup but weird choice to adapt stuff from the final volume of the manga. For first impressions with the series, would rather have first episode be done normally instead of having an ep 0 situation.

I waited to watch this untill we got to that point in the anime and I think I wouldn't have minded starting the anime with this and it's certainly a great way to hook up audience to the anime.

As for the episode itself so Kadode's father was alive but an invader was inside him and he just got back his consciousness. So wait same thing will happen to Oba? Also that piece of trash is still alive and doing his shit like holy fuck man somebody kill him. Also I knew that was Makoto and Futaba at the end there from the voice. Btw karma struck fast for that girl. Great atmosphere throughout the episode and really felt like a post apocalyic world with the eerie feeling.

Hmm. Interesting episode.

I liked a lot the initial conflict presented very much like District 9 movie and how a simple editor might also become an antihero like Wikus did.

The chara-design looks really nice with characters having their own distinct looks, making it more out of the box.

There are two things I disliked about this premiere though. 1) How easily Nobuo escaped totally harm free from the armed New Japan fanatics (he was pinned down on the floor, even if the shooter shifted their weight that's an almost impossible feat for a regular guy). 2) The massive coincidence of another faction being in the area at the right moment to save his ass, not to mention the massive coincidence that one of them recognized him and was acquaintance with his daughter.

I'll still keep watching just because the setting is quite fascinating and hopefully the whole plot will have better writing than the 2 contrivances I mentioned.

Too much exposition & stuff happening.
Should have either stick to manga order or remove the exposition, let it be unexplained. Setting the atmosphere or stake is fine, but over explaining with dialogue is just bad.
I hope episode 1 will be good and people can just skip this episode.

Didn't expect them to begin with the ending! Good move though, I feel like it'd be less confusing to people who haven't read the manga. So far I rate an 8/10. I'm relieved the animation isn't bad; this was a fear of mine. I have a good feeling about the rest of the anime, and I hope it becomes so successful that other works of Inio Asano can be adapted.

Why would they start with basically a rearranged half of the last volume of the manga? Weird choice. This could be a good choice if done correctly and after having established characters and part of the story after a few episodes. Really strange choice

Look like source readers not that happy but I liked the first episode a lot. Took a min to get into things because of the timeskip and there was a decent amount of exposition, but after a few minutes I got into things and enjoyed the whole post apocalyptic journey set up. Been looking for something to fill the Tengoku sized hole in my heart and this could be it

The invaders and human factions that have developed in response to them, seem really interesting and I almost wish this ep would’ve been an hour long so we could’ve seen more of the outside world..

The girls’ deaths was supposed to be a gut wrenching moment but I couldn’t help but laugh since she just gave that whole spill out only doing this to guarantee their safety 💀 they’d been travelling together for how long? And she was willing to sell out the dude that protected them? RIP bozo

Worst kept secret that the daughter still alive.. looking forward to seeing more of this story play out. Lot of questions. Art style is different, but animation was a little weak like during the robot chase sequence..

Solid start though

Absolutely horrible decision to reveal some of the major plot points and characters that hit way more after 10 volumes of buildup. It’s like if the black swordsman arc had an expo dump about the whole eclipse. Completely trash episode that already fucked up some moments which would’ve been surprising twists.

Really not a fan of them starting the anime at this point in the story as it spoils some pretty important things that we shouldn't know yet, like the mothership blowing up which is such an unknown variable and something that the manga would work towards, and even what the aliens look like which wasn't a secret itself but it was withheld for a good while on purpose. Otherwise though the anime looks beautiful and I think I hope it comes out as a solid adaptation. That said I will be recommending to friends to skip this episode.

Really enjoyed it. You could tell the people behind the project really cared about making a quality adaptation in terms of visuals, music, va, etc.

Admittedly, I was totally thrown off by what I was watching the first few minutes. Partly because I didn't recall these events happening early on, and partly because I forgot many of the details. Like how much
Kind of weird that they would start off with that, but also kind of cool because it adds intrigue.

Also, did Ikuta Lilas and ano record a new track for the OP? Or was this also in the movie(s)? Pretty cool song.

Was this episode also extracted from the movie (if i got it right the series will be the movie cut in many parts right), or was it a special one made for the occasion?

I read somewhere that this episode 0 is a "weird" place to start considering the storytelling choices of the manga (clears a lot of things that are hard to get at first) and i'm dubious towards this kind of choice.

“Read as little as possible of critical or aesthetic works. They are either products of a close-minded spirit, petrified and devoid of meaning in their lifeless hardening, or clever verbal games [...]. Works of art are of an infinite solitude; nothing is worse than criticism for approaching them. Only love can grasp them, keep them, be just toward them. Always give precedence to your own feeling against these analyses, these reviews, these introductions. [...] You must let every impression, every seed of feeling, ripen within you, in the dark, in the inexpressible, in the unconscious, those regions closed to understanding. Wait with humility and patience for the hour of the birth of a new clarity. Art demands of its faithful followers as much as of its creators.”
