THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
This episode actually had a pretty solid buildup with an undefeated champion.

There's also more exposure to the reality of boxing world. Honestly, that injury looked like near death. The training match in the ring was pretty cool. Joe went all out into the fight like a real fighter. Next episode should be even more exciting.

To think what reaction would actually be of people after hearing that Gearless Joe is back, it was a letdown since everyone's thinking that he's washed off at this point of his life. But, to someone like Liu who's bound to become a great MegaloBoxer, he thinks differently.

Liu wants to have a rematch with Joe. He realizes that Joe was not at his best in their previous match because of all Nanbu's death stuff. But, before that Liu has his own match with someone else which would be interesting to see how much Liu has improved over the past years. Got a glimpse of Shirato as well. She hasn't changed much from her looks.

That sparring between Liu and Joe was great. Liu was aggressive at the start and was overwhelming Joe, even Yuri thought it would be too much for Jor to handle. But, that left hook took a toll on Liu which cleared all things that Joe is still the same he used to be back then. That OST was great during that scene. It'll be interesting to see their rematch for sure.

Yuri hasn't changed all that much in the 7-year timeskip, yet his disciple Liu attempts to surpass Yuri and become the King of Kings in all of Megalonia. Now that's a goal worth achieving since the match with him and Gearless Joe (that doesn't reek the same Joe of the situation after Nanbu's death) in his own opinion, wasn't a true match fair and square like the finale match between him and Yuri.

A pretty sad life for Mac the former Megaloboxer whose had quite the rollercoaster ride, whose injuries are recovered and cured through technology. And so this is where the former Megalonia head-cum-Shirato Group CEO Yukiko has landed, together with this technology project that is a win-win for all parties. A great initiative no doubt to save lives, but at what cost, is a complete mystery.

The training sprrring of Liu with Joe, while the kids record some secret intel, is intense and felt just like how a real boxing match should be. Santa should've stayed true to his reporting calibre, through with some embellishments just to make Joe look good in the press.

Sons of ROSCO, the Public Hero Mac Rosario vs. the undisputed champion of Yuri's disciple Edison Liu, next episode will be an exciting match.

Even without music, the sparring match between Joe and Liu is exciting nonetheless (but minus point for Liu's new hairstyle, his old one is much hotter) And I like the way Joe suddenly goes for a bareback fight, a fight without a protection, I hope he'll do the same when he has sex with me ;)

I love the way the anime hype Mac, now we don't know for sure who'll win. But I've to admit that the brain chip seems fishy, but I'm not saying that the new CEO is a villain who try to control the world via brain chip, but there might be some flaws that no one knows that gives Mac an unfair advantage or even disadvantage. We'll have to observe him closely.

Joe stepping back into the ring against the man whom retired him those years ago. Glad to see Joe has that burning fire in his eyes back. We've seen him so low already its a relief to have Joe back in the ring doing well. It surprised me that Liu straight up went to Joe saying he wanted him to be his soaring partner. We were given so much characterization for Liu this episode. How he feels that he will never escape the shadow that Yuri has cast over him. Liu wants to escape that shadow by using Joe so he can defeat Joe like Yuri didn't back when they fought at end of season one. I hope we do see a big rematch between Joe and Liu to end this season. Had some other new character introductions with this Mack and Sakuma. Developing that brain chip that can help people use damaged parts of their body. That's a crazy medical advancement which could help millions of people. It seems to be working great for Mack after his spine injury, amazing to see something so life changing. Mack getting his shot at the champ Liu next episode will be exciting!

You know what, this was actually kind of a light-hearted episode by S2's standards.

I'm a little surprised Joe was able to hang with the current champ after all this time.

Also, them introducing BES and seeing Yuri in a wheelchair has the wheels turning in my head. Joe vs Yuri...?

H Y P E.. The music, the direction, the atmosphere when Joe fights and lands the punch. This kind of stuff is why I fell in love with anime.

I could swear Yuri was out of his wheelchair when we were having the Joe vs Liu flashback.

I though Liu would be a prick but he was a good guy.

I was so happy that Yuri's dog still remembers Joe.

When the sparring was getting great Bonjiri had to ruin it.

Even though things that involve Shirato Group is sometimes not good, is always good to see Yukiko around.

Damn that cliffhanger. I wanted to see the Mac and Liu fight. It looks like Joe regained his fighting spirit after sparing with Liu and has started to get his form back. Now everyone knows that Joe is back in town and are wondering when he is going to get back into the ring. Some of the orphans start to come around with Joe, but Sachio continues to hold a grudge against him. That new BES technology might be a game changer for Megalo Boxers who have suffered from career ending injuries.

I didn't care that much about the animation of the boxing in the first season, I had watched purely for the characters, but god damn the animation of the boxing is so much better here. The hits are fast and not nearly as telegraphed beforehand, and when they land even on a block they just feel so satisfying.

Despite being a fan of the first season this really is my shock of the season, because I genuinely did not give a shit about a sequel and thought the first was a good enough self-contained story, and that we didn't need more. I was wrong, this is way better than the first season, and I'm so sad the novelty of the way it looks has worn off and people aren't watching this one.

Man what a fun episode. If there's one thing I especially like about the second season, it's that how joe alone isn't the focal point of the anime. It's side characters like chief and probably Mac(?) that makes the anime an interesting watch.

Joe hasn't lost his fighting spirit. I wonder if he's gonna make a comeback to megalonia.

The yukiko girl has gotten prettier.

I get the feeling the BES system might be a little more in control of Mac than we're aware of. Just the way they were talking about "Mac Time." Plus, Rosco is already shady as heck. Especially the young genius kid, he looks like an untrustworthy goober.

At this point I feel like Joe will have a couple of exhibition matches at most, and then focus on being a trainer. It seems like we're on the path to a, moreorless, happy ending for Joe.

First episode with Joe not being depressed. That was a nice change of air.

Now this said, this was probably my least favorite episode since the season started. The focus changed from Joe to S1 characters I couldn't care less about and though they did what they could to make Mac's character relatable, his backstory execution felt too "in your face" for my taste. I kinda like Liu's character tho.

This fucking show, man. It's just so good. I want to cry for one reason or another nearly every episode. I don't have much more to say at the moment other than indiscriminate gushing, so I guess that's that.

EDIT: I guess the one thing I will say is that the current "conflict" is almost nonexistent; the narrative is treating all parties involved as amicable to one another, which somewhat diminishes the dramatic stakes and narrative tension. If I were to guess what's coming next, it's that shenanigans are probably afoot with the Shirato portion of the tech being used in Mac's gear - he's probably going to overperform at some point and accidentally kill Liu. The end of the episode also implies that Joe and Mac (SNES game reference? Lol) may actually know one another, so if Liu does indeed die, it may make Joe's incentive to beat Mac in Megalonia personal.

Does Rosco really look shady to you?
They might have looked like a tricky company in the ''documentary'' part of the episode but when we saw their president interact with Shirato and Mac all your doubts about them should have been dispelled.

Shady. As. Heck.

I dunno, they just come off as shady. Maybe they aren't? I feel like they are. Only time will tell.

To me it looks like they are using Mac for their own benefit, whatever that might be. Talking him back into Megalobox-ing for the sake of furthering their research, and then hedging their bets so that he'll win this match and show off what they've accomplished and what they can do in order to expand their consumer base... Generally, in these situations, the company seeks to gain a lot more than just charity. Though, perhaps I've seen too many examples of rotten companies and my cynicism is getting the better of me. Again, only time can tell.

Holy fuck that sparring session, I nutted. Another fantastic episode, I thought Rosco would be an evil scientist or something lmao, but I am glad that's not the case, he seems to be a genuinely good dude. And it's so nice to see Yukiko again, she still looks beautiful as always, no scratch that, she looks even more beautiful. Also, the Shirato group aren't the ones managing megalonia any more.

We only got introduced to Mac now but honestly, I am rooting for the dude. Joe must be an inspiration to him or something. Glad to see that Joe still has the fire within him, that sparring session was fire, and then that fucking soundtrack, bah gawd. Yuri is still the same after all those years, respect. Looking forward to Liu vs Mac.

Nothing about what you've just wrote is really morally or ethically wrong in my opinion.
Rosco's president made it clear that profits and research come before philanthropy but that doesn't mean they're preparing any ominous play on Mac.
And don't forget that they've partnered with the Shirato group and allowed president Yukiko herself to oversee the project; who would try any crooked scheme in that situation?
