man, i've been aching for a mature anime for about 2 and a half years now. Everything people seem to be watching is Clannad or The Melancholy of Whatsherface.

Finally, a mature anime for adults. We need more of these along with the Cowboy Bebops, Black Lagoons, Claymores. More!

There are actually a number of mature series around. At least one airs every season. If you've really been waiting years for it, then you haven't been looking very hard. :\

Ive seen all the other "good" ones. The last decent, mature, anime that I watched was Elfen Lied.

Im just saying that the non-kiddy stuff that is actually GOOD is rare.

This probably won't go down very well but.... No way was death note for a mature audience, Its just a shonen trying to act like a seinen (Not to say i didn't like it).

funkpanda, By adult do you mean graphic? because there are alot of great adult anime that have little/no violence in them.

Mnemosyne looks promising (Brutality wise), Especially after that piercing scene... that part appealed to my sadistic side.

I mean anime's featuring adults and adult situations. I just dont like kids.

Wait, let me rephrase. I would prefer an anime featuring adults OVER an anime featuring kids. Or at least the kids at mature enough.

Like Lucky Star? Ive never seen an episode and never will because its a bunch of ditzy idiot kids.

Well, adults and adult situations are two different things.
Claymore may feature an adult cast but imho is a normal shonen anime (well, the manga was published in monthly shonen jump) which does not contain adult-like situation.
On the other hand an anime like Now and then, here and there despite the cast is definitely directed toward a mature audience.

And even if you want both there is a whole lots of shows that may appeal to your liking (for instance Yomigaeru Sora -Rescue Wings-, Planetes, Honey and Clover, Paranoia Agent, Big O, Boogiepop Phanton and so on), you just have to search for them because they are very often eclipsed by anime which can appeal to a broader audience.

P.S. I don't count gore as adult content, i count it as adult fanservice ;)
P.P.S. Fanservice is not bad at all if used wisely.

There are plenty of mature anime around. I admit, not many with casual nudity, or adult-esque torture scenes, but there are many anime children wouldn't understand.

The darkness, adult theme, and style of this anime are greatly appealing to me though.

Recommendations:
-Bacanno!
-Elfen Lied
-Spice and Wolf
-Paranoia Agent

And Claymore isn't exactly an adult anime. Shonen is a better description.

Just watch Legend Of The Galactic Heroes, you won't say that Mnemosyne is mature after that. And what someone said before about Death Note being a Shonen disguised as a shonen is totally true and applies to most of what you call "adult animés", like Claymore (a dark shonen, but a shonen), Elfen Lied (I NEVER thought about it being an animé for adults honestly, it's always been for teenagers imo, and I loved it just like that) Darker Than Black or whatever.

Oh, and I second cyruz/crystal etc... When you are used to watching a lot of animés for a long time and are an adult (well, I'm 24, but am I really to be considered an adult?! ;)), you can watch approximately any animé of any genre and still appreciate it.

In every age, in every place, the deeds of men remain the same.

God, I'm glad some else feels the same way I do. Myself, I like anime that is psychological, smart and with a really great plot that makes me think and wanting more. Usually that often comes from dark genres, but unfortunately, there is a shortage of it with a "kid-heavy" cast.

Hmm...now that I really think about it, that's probably why I couldn't thoroughly enjoy (OK, no one kill me 0_0) Higurashi no Naku Koro ni/kai as much as i would like. Too many kiddie-cartoonish "funny" moments for my taste that somewhat out-weighed the serious/horror moments.

I would say that either your list is severely outdated or you need to start looking harder. Assuming the latter, I think you should watch Perfect Blue and/or Berserk. Both quintessential examples of seinen IMO

While Mnemosyne is intended for older audiences, I think something like Seirei no Moribito displays more maturity with less obvious traits. Mnemosyne is more intended as a stylized anime harkening back to the '90's era of dark brutality and sexuality.

agreed. there are times and places for everything, but sometimes it is nice to watch an anime that shows the darker side of life, it may just beme, but I am a sucker for anti-heroes and any show where possibilities of a happy ending are thrown out the window. someone said that the world is not a pretty place and is more beautiful for it, and they are totally right.

some of the better ones along this line are:
-GANTZ and Gungrave
-Saikano (not necessarily violent, but an extremely serious (and depressing) look at love/war)
-Berserk, Ninja Scroll
-Black Lagoon

Sadly the majority of the "dark" shows are way too forced and contrived (Kaiji, Akagi, Death Note). And if my serious moments get interrupted by kids comedy (when naruto or bleach actually get good it gets freaking ruined by fluff!).

Wow! So every anime not showing blood and sexual scenes is a kids anime?

Damn, I didn't know that I should only like animes showing 4 barrels of blood per minute.

Personally, I found the first episode of Mnemosyne quite good (espacially the op), but I wouldn't rate it higher than 7 maybe 8. Elfen Lied was even dropped by myself.

Depending on your personal taste any aduld can find any anime good. It's the freedom of every person.

I actually think there are many underage children out there who love f.e. Mnemosyne or Elfen Lied for their violence and gore, because many of today's kids think they are cool if they watch such "aduld" contents.

No, what i'm saying in the original post is that the only animes that I've noticed lately have all been starring kids. And when you have anime's starring kids you get the typical childlike stupidity that's in EVERY anime featuring kids.

And that I'm glad that this anime is out because it doesn't a kid lead. It may not be the greatest anime, but so far I haven't had to deal with one-liners and a bunch of scenes with people sighing.

Well, not every anime featuring underage protagonists contains stupid, childish behavior and childish comedy.
But I get what you wanted to say and I agree that I often wished that the characters would be a bit older, too.
Especially in my case. My favorite genre is romance/drama (don't really know why - with non-animated films I can't stand those), but most characters in those are around 16/17 years old.

For example, Kimi ga Nozomu Eien was rather refreshing for me, because most part played at the age 20+.

So I understand what you are saying, but some animes featuring kid-characters are still very good, because of a good story, funny comedy and cute characters.

Moreover I think an aduld, slowly getting near a mother/father-role-age, can still find children in animes cute, because she/he naturally would find her/his little daughter/son cute, also. It's not a matter of age.

Hmm I'll just be happy with more Black Lagoon, Claymore, CB, etc.

I have watched the first two Mnemosyne eps and I have to say it looks good so far.

There are a lot of more "mature" animes out there (besides Hentai) but I guess it depends on what you consider mature. I mean theres the obvious nudity, sex, language, etc. But what about themes?
I mean for example look at Shigofumi (which may not be the best example but the only one I can think of atm) its not what I wouldn't necessarily consider it un-mature... hell the first eps was depressing as hell... don't get me wrong I'm not saying it is like Speed Grapher where younger audiences can't... or probably shouldn't rather watch... hmm... anyway, I never seem to have much trouble finding animes I like that are more adult themed. Really when it comes down to it much of anime can go either way. Kind of like Shrek where younger audiences can watch it oblivious while older ones will get certain... nuances.

All I have to say for this season is Kaiji. If you haven't seen it, you're missing out. Since you're a mature viewer, you should have no problem getting past the animation style and focus on the story itself.

Just finished watching Now and Then, Here and There.

NOW THATS what I'm talking about. An anime that features kids but doesn't force us to go through the "anime teenager sterotypes".

THey are there, but its heavily offset. Mostly because of Sara, her character was THE most believable and touching. Hamdo was a good character too.

But back on topic, all i'm saying is that thank god for Mne, its a breath of fresh air when we're forced to deal with the Lucky Star's, Melancholy's and Clannads etc etc.

Adult oriented Animes also include animes that contain stuff that you wouldn't understand unless you were around during the time they are making a parody of. Sly political comments throughout the anime also make them more directed toward adults. Even if there is no gore or blood, it does not necessarily have to be for children.
I have not had the chance to see much bloody animes, however, it is true that Mne is going to be more directed toward adults. Thus there will very likely be less "band wagon hopping" with this anime. If this gets to be one of the top 10 animes, then blast me away. >.>
