THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
That opening and ending kicked some balls. This last installment was fairly good to begin with. It's a little shame I didn't really like the other movies or rather don't see them on the same level as SAC or the original movies, but this last one is pretty much on the same level.
Hoping to see even more GitS in future times. As of now I am satisfied.

Meh, I didn't care for it much. This one felt like a giant callback to the 1995 movie, the story was almost the same basic thing and many scenes tried to mirror famous moments in the 1995 movie.
Overall, Arise was a very lackluster entry for me. Better than nothing, I guess, even though I'm ok with just leaving the franchise as it is..
But we still have another movie on its way in 2015, so it better be good!

Welp, well that quickly turned into a massacre...

Looks like there's a pretty skilled hacker capable of even interfering with Major this episode. Interesting. Tbh, this movie had a good momentum going but my interest in the overall story wasn't that high. From my understanding, Emma Tsud was supposed to be Makoto's successor. And not only that, there's also the scarecrow man identified as the other ghost. Characterization was fairly weak and given the length of the film, there was barely any time for development. Sigh. 6/10 and that's generous.

OST and action was decent at least. I'll look forward to the new movie instead.

For me, this was the weakest of the Arise movies. It was a bit difficult to follow, particularly around the middle with its excessive technobabble. It also wasn't helped by the length of time since the previous instalment. Long enough that you forget most of what happened, yet too recent to bother rewatching.

It came 3 days ago and only 5 people have replied? Shit's weird. Anyway, it was easily the best Arise. On parallel with the better gits sac episodes. I might even rewatch because it looked just that damn glorious, and dat OST.

Okay. A stunning watch.

Story-wise, the last OVA had to unveil the conspiracy by the clock, and I have to give to them for making it a multilateral combo. In same time, it felt anti-climatic and less exciting w/o capturing the Fire-Starter's maker. Perhaps it will be addressed in the upcoming movie.

Now that I think of, never thought the Major can function as a cyber specialist if the Infiltration key for her Ghost is known to anyone, except the maintenance twin-chicks. Kind of cool Kurutsu and Aramaki both agreed upon and gave as much freedom as they can to the Major.

wow what a load of shit this turned out to be. Every new episode gets worse and it's a shame. Togusa has a cyber brain now? Why? The only thing that made him unique in the group was that he was old school with an old gun and no cyber brain.

All the hack attempts and virus infections in the Majors brain are over done. She's supposed to be a world class wizard hacker but she's blindly taking dives into people's brains without any backup plan or second diver. I can understand this is supposed to be the early days of the group but she should at least know better.

The whole story is flat out stupid. They took a simple story and made it overly complicated. The graphics are pretty much the only thing going for it.

i agree on the technobabble thing completely but in my opinion Arise 3 was the worst out of all 4 movies and this one is on par with Arise 2.

As i understood his comm got manipulated with a virus in some starter log (no idea how exactly). i googled something up from the wiki..im not sure if it even counts for Arise movies.

"Togusa (トグサ?) is the second most prominently featured male character in the Ghost in the Shell manga and anime series. In Stand Alone Complex, as well as the original Ghost in the Shell movie, it is stated that he is the only member of Section 9 who has not undergone cybernetic replacement in some manner as he had been referred to as a natural (though he does have a cyberbrain). In the manga, he is cybernetic like all other members. "

That Batou service was hilarious
Togusa getting ghost hacked surpirsed me for a moment, because I thought he wasn't modified yet to be taken over

Scenes in between had some very nice art
Logicoma getting details about upgraded was nice

The story ended quite dramatic, but I got the feeling it would have made a bigger impact if it was told as a series
Arise was ok, I do hope the upcoming new movie would be a continueation of the first two installments

Yeah that how i will rate things too.
Finally an OVA episode that was as good as a SAC small arc.
Of corse this also was had a mix of elements from previous GitS and the manga but it managed to put them together decently enough.

Btw too bad Batou didn't manage to get major in a swimsuit for us.

So will get anything more from this? I mean the virus creator who is the real dangerous genius out there is still basically free selling his little infiltration programs on the black market and all.

I enjoyed this episode, definitely one of the better ones out of the four Arise movies. However I've generally found GitS hard to follow with subtitles and get a much better grasp of what's going on when I watch it dubbed, so looking forward to that.

As another commenter mentioned, it had been long enough for me to forget about Emma's appearance in the last episode but not so much that I felt it was worth re-watching them. I'm very much looking forward to watching them all in a single day, dubbed, at some point.

I also wasn't aware of another movie slated for 2015 so that's something to look forward to!

This was the best of the 4 movies. GitS still hasn't lost itself.

I enjoyed it even though it was pretty damn complicated. Forcing me to go back and rewatch scenes to follow the "logic".

I think it was ok, i don't think it was the best of the Arise series (i think Border 2 was the best in my opinion), i did notice the references to the 1995 movie, like i said it was ok, defenetly not my favourite of the Arise series, to be honest, talking about the Arise series as a whole, i prefer the original 1995 movie and S.A.C.

I'm defo looking forward to the 2015 movie too :)

Yeah, I really liked this installment, 2 and 4 were probably my favorites of the four.

And I agree with the OP's post, the beginning and end kicked ass. And I was pretty hooked through the middle twists and turns.

Edit: Oh, I also enjoyed and chuckled at the nice Batou, Togusa and Logicoma scene, their fun little exchange was good as was the Logicoma stuff nodding to how they'll develop from here like in SAC's version of the timeline (with them being upgraded, armed, riding inside them, etc.). Plus the "Mr. Batou" totally hit the feels. :D

Bandages and band-aid..stupid. If it's to hide damage, use gloves etc. And the band-aids didn't hide anything in the first place. Both in the original entries as well as in Arise, everyone casually runs around with a torn off arm etc., but now and then, bandages are somehow important.

She also got hacked a bit too often. Top-class hacker and all, but every damn script-kiddie and his mother can hack her.

The scene at the docks was stupid, too. Batou had the time to run to the major and grab/push her over the edge, sinking down several meters until the shell finally hits. But they didn't have the time to take that cyborg with them? Or was it supposed to not be water-proof? So what, it may have short-circuited and the body would be fubar, but the actual/brain..i can't imagine that would be broken. Otherwise you could take them out with a water pistol or throwing a bucket of water at them.

With so much time, given that the explosion was rather harmless (the pier wasn't damaged except maybe the actual impact point, nothing was hurled away etc.) they also could have grabbed it and turned around.

The whole mech was also stupid. It can't withstand a sniper shot or a grenade? And somehow, it has to heave itself off the ground to break the slime pinning it, before it can activate the top mounted rocket launchers?

It's like everyone forgot how physics work etc., because everything is done via cyberwarfare. Which would make sense, given that people are literally forced to get a cyberbrain and further cyberization, except that it's never used to make a point..and the funny physical combat with the cyborgs who looked like they were using fire extinquishers as weapons.

Together with the heavy techno babble that not even the characters understood, it's easily the worst entry to Arise. Arise is still far from being as bad as people made it out to be though.

I thought this was the strongest of the 4 episodes but as a whole I'd say Arise is certainly the weakest entry into the franchise. It's definitely not a bad entry, but not upto par with the likes of the movies or SAC (god I'd kill for a 3rd gig)

My thoughts may change when I get around to watching all 4 episodes back to back though.

Favorite of all the Arise movies so far. I finally felt like I was watching a proper Ghost in the Shell. Which isn't too surprising since the story is pretty much lifted from the classic 95 movie. There was a bunch of scenes that were homages to it too.

Still think that Arise is not up to the level of SAC. The team behind this has to improve their game for the next instalment.

THIS, is the Grand Conclusion to this movie series???

Just what in the fuck was this analraping garbage? This takes 'convoluted' to a whole new level. In the end, it all turned out to be unremarkable in almost everything. The music sounds like shit and it's pure irritation after the OP all the way to just before the ED.

I don't understand why P.I.G does this.

Just look at this you motherfuckers.

Look at how beautiful the layout of the city is. I can't believe they put in so much effort in the visuals and try to make the story as hard as possible to follow.

Jesus fuck there was nothing good about this shit. They love ripping off scenes back from 1995, they love stupid fuckinass slow-mo, they love overcomplicating things, ESPECIALLY explanations, they love shitty character design, they love shitty music to fit the movies (all except for the OP. That opening song is the most dope shit I've ever heard), they love BORING ASS STORIES NO ONE CARES ABOUT, AND MOST ESPECIALLY, THEY CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF HIGH-PITCHED MACHINES WITH PERSONALITIES. JESUS CHRIST EVEN MOTOKO WAS PISSED OFF AT THAT LOGICOMA.

I want to hide. Hide in shame. Go back to my mother, and nestle in between her breasts. Suckle on her teats, and let go of all my worries, all the problems of the world. And as I drink upon Heaven's dew, slowly I forget, that I ever hid in shame. For as long as ARISE exists, so will the comfort caressing my soul; the comfort known as "shift+delete."

in my opinion it was the best of the 4 arise movies. I thought the first one was ok, but the second and third one were both total garbage. This one however had a quite interesting storyline, only a small amount of unecessary comedy, sadly too much shoehorned material from the previous Gits franchise and the characters acted less annoying than in the previous 2 movies, but still a bit.

Yawn. Exposition overload as usual. Everything told, nothing shown. And most of what is told is impenetrable technobabble. If you have to explain every single plot point directly to the audience, you have a problem. Still, it was an improvement over the shit-fest that was Ghost Tears.

If the storytelling matched the quality of the art, Arise could have been pretty special, but sadly it was just one big disappointment.

I personally felt it was an enjoyable watch. It was a little hard to keep up with the tech speak in the middle and I guess there was a little bit of fan service and throw back to the original but I'm okay with that being there, it wasn't over indulgent.

All in all I gave 8/10. I've enjoyed the Arise adaptation even if I don't totally agree with some of the content (looking at you Arise number 3) but when that great soundtrack is coupled with the animation it feels like a fresh outlook on my favourite anime. I look forward to seeing what 2015 holds for GITS.

The biggest betrayal in recent memory. ARISE is even worse than the new Berserk film trilogy (and that's saying something!).

ARISE is to the rest of the franchise what the prequel trilogy of Star Wars is to the original films. ARISE's hacks have even gone up and used Lucas' flawed logic in creating their own turd.

Other than that this movie was pretty lovely as well, quite decent development and pretty solid action so all in all these 4 movies were a pretty good addition to GitS!

Just like movie 2, the somewhat decent action scenes are downplayed by the inconsistent animation quality. And just like all the previous movies, the this one follows the same boring story progression full of almost nonsensical events that get neatily explained only in its final minutes, followed by some "S9 is going to be awesome, just you wait!" type of conversation. It's almost funny, now that I think about it.

At least it's over now. Zero interest in checking the "sort of a sequel" TV series and whatever it's they have planned for the new movie.

Well, this was something. The one-punch fight was funny too, but a girl screaming with man's voice is narm.

I suppose our antagonist chose the suicidal hackers on purporse? Hum, maybe.

You know, conjoining three reasons for the plot in one is..confuse. The thing about "domestic vs foreign" weapons only comes off after 20 minutes.

I will give it a 4.8/6, but that's probably because I can understand what the characters are saying.

It was a good episode, but ehh it felt incomplete.

Wtf isn't that lady from the last episode that was arrested when she tried to escape with Akira??!

I do like the homages they did for the first movie. The boat scene as well as when Batou jump and save Motoko from the blast. When Motoko look up, it's similar to when Motoko was searching for her ghost in the first movie. The gunship missiles is similar to the last episode of 2nd GiG. I also love how she's exploring her Ghost now. And Batou seems to having a thing with Major at the end!?!

And Togusa always had a cyber brain. If you watched Solid State Society, you would see how he was hacked.

I think the action was not that good compared to the older episodes. 2nd episode still remains the best for me.

I do love Motoko's outfit to be in line with the original movie :)

I also love her in shades!!

It's obvious this is not finished. Since there is Pyrophoric Cult arc which is Episode 9 and 10 in Alternative Architecture.

I think it's kinda a mistake on watching this since Alternative Architecture is pretty much the same thing except for the order of the episodes and connects to the Fire Starter hacker arc to the new movie.

It's not over yet. So far it's an 8/10. We'll see how they expanded this in Alternative Architecture ^^

I think a lot of complaints about Arise are because it's hard to follow, but people just piss about the animation and trivial things instead. Which is cool, it is hard to follow but that's why I love it. It's a great big puzzle that requires you to keep up and think back.

Contrast to Stand Alone episodes where you could predict the outcome just minutes into the episode. And iirc no-one had any personality at all.

Dunno what people mean by technobabble: NPO = Non-Profit Organisation, like NGOs who act independently of governments during wars. Most other terms are pretty established by now though?

And it's not a rehash; if anything it's a prelude to the 1995 film. It establishes concepts especially why Kusanagi wants to so eagerly dive into a net-roaming inhuman ghost there (she is exposed to these sort of things but denied that in this series). Not to mention her experiences with a set physical body and love which I thought was handled really well in the previous episode.

A series finale not bad, this last part of the story has its good dose of mystery, charm and action that makes the narration engaging, with the addition of the theme of the SAC. Not very clear certain situations and certain passages in the narrative, the final scene reminded me of an episode seen in SAC and a certain part of the film GITS. Drawings that have not seen quality fluctuations as in the previous one. Finally I want to say that every time I see something related to GITS, I always have a feeling of malaise and fascination, who knows if it's something positive, I instinctively say yes.

And now I also watch the TV series from these OVA, I want to hurt.
