Oh man so we finally get a scene that has never been adapted before.

Other than that, the episode was the same as the movie, besides the better animation of course. Now I'm really looking forward for some Griffith new content because the movies definitely didn't do his character justice and he could use some scenes to illustrate his thought process and emotional state. I'm still very thankful to studio C for the attention they've given to the memorial anyway.

Damn they could have at least illustrated what Guts was saying with some images, the amount of people who will mistake that Guts was raped by Gambino gonna be absurd.

Anyway, they adapted the wounds chapter well enough. And the fact that they made a new scene in 2d gives me hope for the future (especially because the declaration of war moment looks like it's going to be in 2d as well).

The new scene they added at the end between Casca and Guts was decent, still nowhere near to what it should be. Some of those still shots were straight ass though

That was basically a perfect episode. The decision to remove both the opening and the ending works great here. It adds tention and makes you realise how important this episode truly is. Also new completely 2D scenes that finally covered one of the missing elements from the movies: that being Gambino and Donovan. They were technically there, but always used in these strange flashbacks without any explanation. Overall a great experience so far.

@MatchaBlueberry It depends. For me I liked them somehow and treated them like sort of fluid summary (soundtrack in general e.g), not like and faithful adaptation. Movies have better pacing for me. For now this one have more detailed/slightly changed (in terms of geometry) faces, few new music tracks, 3 new scenes (around 20 minutes).

Some of it wasn't well animated, I hope they release a blu-ray in the future with it and some other scenes corrected, they can even add some of the frames they cutted back

I thought some shots were distractingly bad as well. They looked like hand-drawn, too.

Assuming the entire scene with the breakdown and the flashback is new material made this year, this is disappointing, especially if Studio 4C gets to continue the adaptation beyond Golden Age.

Good episode overall, but production quality continues to get in the way for me somewhat. And I even liked a lot of the earlier CGI sequences.

*I guess light manga spoilers here, but nothing important*

I've never watched any Berserk adaptation before, only read the manga. Do they ever actually explain why Guts returns to the Hawks in this adaptation?

We know from the manga that during the Arms Tournament, Guts hears the Hawks are being led by Caska, which tells him something has gone wrong and he returns to help. If I hadn't read this previously, it looks like a bit of a bullshit random encounter. Obviously, the manga still has the perfect timing of Guts' arrival, but it at least explained why he was even looking for them.

Interesting 🤔 all the content from the movies (so far) has been carried out? Or they’ve cut some things?

they cutted some frames in the beginning and ending of some scenes and two scenes of Charlott, but nothing too important

Marvelous episode. Great moment to finally reveal more details about Guts' youth and times before he joined Griffith.

Donovan had a cameo, but more importantly we could learn more about Gambino's role in Guts life. Everything shed new light on Guts' fever dream flashback from the first episode. All those elements also allowed to flesh out Guts more as character in general.

I wish there were some scenes from the times when Guts was away from the Band of the Hawk, but oh well. You can't fit everything into a standard length episode and end up with something good looking, after all.

Derfel10 said:

Then those people will be to blame, not the show. Guts has clearly said that it was not Gambino who raped him, but rather Gambino was the one who had sold Guts to the person who eventually raped him.

If I remember correctly, no. Guts has just appeared where the Band of the Hawk stationed, but I don't remember anything from Movie 3 that would explain why Guts appeared there at that time all of sudden.

The new scene was really good. If anything this just proves Studio 4C can still do 2D and some 3D, given time and their experience. We do not really know since when this was planned, therefore how much time they had to make this happen, but the way the handled it was superb for me. If they continue, I really hope they are given proper time and resources while keeping the same staff that worked on the direction, sound and animation.

Very good! Now I come to expect a continuation (if we have Wyald in the next episode...).
Overall the biggest issue is the lack of fluidity in animation, I didn't have a problem with this episode (better than the rest we've been shown, at least they used 2D animators this time so maybe), but we still haven't seen decent new fight scenes animimated. Can Studio 4C manage it?

lmao I just said the obvious, that some people will get confused because it comes from nowhere if the person don't no know anything about berserk, not that is bad dialogue or hard to get. Not that hard to understand bro.

But let me translate my post for you to understand my complain with the scene: wounds should not have been a revelation, but a reflection about the character (and just that), so as usual studio 4c manages to do something good, but far from the ideal adaptation. That's all.

Considering the positioning of Donovan when he was first shown in this episode, it shouldn't be that hard for people to figure out who raped Guts. Maybe some might mistake, but there's no way the number will be 'absurd'.

I think this is absolutely the best content we will get out of this "memorial edition".I mean the rest of the episodes will probably be like the movies, with a few fixes and changes, but this is the absolute best.I mean we got the bonfire of dreams, but that was already in the 1997 adaptation,so this is the only adaptation that mentions Gambino and Donovan. This is what this edition was supposed to be from the start. Now I can confidently say,we deserved this and we got it.Hope we can still see atleast a glimpse of Wylad, but I am happy with this anyways.

Wyld won't appear. It will only be 13 episodes and considering what's still left of the 3rd movie, there isn't enough time for that, but there might still be some new smaller stuff.

Yes, it was very unfortunate, but I just assumed it was their vision on how they wanted to handle Golden Age arc movie trilogy. That's why, as you could see in my reviews for all three movies, I treated the third movie lighter than the first movie in terms of omitted content.

I hoped to see some scenes about Guts during the timeskip. Nothing much, just silhouettes of characters appearing in "Sparks from a Sword Tip" chapter and few lines from it, said by Guts himself, summing up the main theme of that chapter. It was important to understand Guts' mindset and to see even more how he has changed as a person over these few years of being a member of the Band of the Hawk and after he left the Band itself.
