THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Odakawa earned the alpaca Shirakawa's number, but not for the ways you'd expect.

The comedic duo of Homosapiens, I'd feel that their commentary provides some intriguing facts, case in point of some examples such as this:
"Comedy requires intellience and culture to understand. That's the bare minimum.
In other words, the general public are idiots. But that doesn't stop them from judging us. Keep your mouths shut, idiots.
Being a creator is a one-way street. Suppressing your own creativity in order to cater to society's values produces mediocre results. Damn amateurs."
>>> Kinda reminds me of a certain toxic community...?

And also, Odakawa's lone life whilst Shirakawa gruelling him about his life, and vice versa. Kakihana goading Odakawa on advances towards Shirakawa, yet he remains being constructively liberal with realism. I'm even surprised that Kakihana got a shot on Tinder with a match.

Kabasawa's Twitter "viral fame" is still not going all that well, but I'd guess this resembles the current Twitter landscape of commentaries left and right of retweets.

Even Mystery Kiss (comprising of Rui, Shiho and Mitsuya with manager Yamamoto) faces the lack of public awareness even with their debut, and even for a hardcore fan such as Imai, to be able to sympathize and help out is every effort given. And for the comedic duo Homosapiens (Shibagaki and Baba) to enter Odokawa's taxi and ridicule the hell outta their comedic stance to something like Maesetsu!, it's easily recognisable and fun to listen to the banter.

Hoho, the criminal Dobu has come to act against Odakawa...what will happen?

This show is doing wonders in a way that doesn't detract from the experience, all centred around Odakawa and the character cast being passengers in his taxi of stories galore. I don't know how to put into words, but it's quite the intriguing charm, and I love shows like these that give me some words of wisdom to think about the parallels of such an anthromorphic world that's similar to real life.

The beginning back and forth with odakawa and the sheep woman was funny, reminds me of hachiman's conversations lol

EDIT - Rewatched the episode and all the conversations seem to full of fast rebuttals in a monotonous voice, not bad. That ending was crazy though, who would've expected that!

Orakawa could easily get a girlfriend 😂
Apparently idols are going to be important too, the homosapiens commentators have a big problem
And that cliffhanger at the end... (°ロ°)

Really nice episode

Well lmao I ship it. Hope the Llama don't have ulterior motives. The idol is pretty two face. IDK if I should feel bad for Imai for spending all his money on her lol. Some interesting conversations this episode. Well dang it, he can't meet the llama for now..

I'm really enjoying this show so far. Despite being dialogue heavy, I don't feel time dragging out during the run. Its writing is sharp too, kind of fresh air compared to other comedy shows in the last few seasons.

I don't trust the llama lady, I get the feeling she's onto something. But Odokawa also looks like he's onto something in other aspects, so maybe it pairs well? :v

Two episodes in and I already love the world and the characters. I also agree with others on the dialogue being fun. A bit casual, a bit dry, but charming.

What do you mean? That was Kakihana's phone and most likely it was because he changed his income from under 3 million(around 30k USD) to 20 million(around 200k USD).

Also what is with people calling Shirakawa a sheep or a llama when it's been said several times in the show she is an alpaca?

When? all I could see was he taking the photo then log into the app and getting a notification about a message that he likely got while the app was off.

Also I've never used a dating app but wouldn't he have to change his profile pic(cropping and resizing too) and for the idol to check it and message all in less than a minute?

This is one of the best slice of life anime that I have seen in a long time. I don't even try to connect everything in a nice neat bundle. I just tilt the chair back and let the whole crazy stuff just roll on by. The comedy team was so deadpan funny..... and the sauna scene with the monkey....priceless. I look forward to this anime more than any that I am watching now....which probably says something about my tastes. LOL

A dialogue heavy anime with realistic dialogue. I liked this, maybe not as much as the first but I can see what all sub plots are building towards. Odokawa might be an unreliable narrator, so maybe the show isn't as simple as it seems. The skit from the Homosapiens was really funny. "We will tell you if we are funny or not! Your opinion doesn't matter!"

Man, what an odd direction, almost nothing be understand in the first place. Its looks like the taxi driver turned to be more involved to the surrounding. That Odokawa backstory via that memory also caught off my guard a bit. Why its always caught the human glimpse off? Odd.

Its also gotten more into the side characters, as how its included to the idol and her fan (the way he used the locker number to put out some suggest, next level of foreshadow luck); the duo comedian and their career dilemmas; and don't forget about that zwitter 'real' viral seeker; then the monke and his wife search. Lol. Interesting.

But, as its easier to get attached, i will be more focused on the alpaca and that last encounter, for the other wild monke. Count a sheep before sleep, made you believed that pretty alpaca not even joke when she pulled out the photo to the poor odd driver. However, as its might also related to the monke and his fishy action, moreover with how its ended up threatening Odokawa like that, the next episode will be more odd. Lets see whats the real deal about that.

I have a theory, when Driver got in that accident he talked about he got some sort of brain damage and that makes him percieve people around him as animals, its hinted in the first episode where the doctor asks him how he sees him and he answers Gorilla. I think that will be the twist that will slowly be revealed as the anime goes on !

Monkey man don't do it she's just 18😭

Jokes aside I'm also wondering why his flashbacks seem to have humans in them and how everything is connected. Perhaps the alpaca lady did some kind of deal with the thug monkey to help pay her medical school loans?? Also, I wonder whether the police guy or the thug monkey called the idol bodyguard.

I'm still wondering who he was talking to in his closet. AGHHH why the cliffhanger I just wanna know what happenss :(

Wow, this series is actually good in keeping your interest and curiosity! I like how the animation is just so laid back but the dialogue although heavy is relatable and funny. It's like beastars with animal characters in a human like society. And the mystery is like durarara where you get a large cast of characters that might end up somehow all connected at the end!

Looking forward to the next episode! That alpaca girl surely is suspicious especially since she has some connection with that monkey at the cliffhanger!

I imagine Hanae with a permanent glare, talking out of one side of his mouth while reading his lines for this.

The comedy does nothing for me most of the time, but I don't actually mind. Odd Taxi is such an appropriate title, too. This is so damn different from the usual anime lineup, though I'm still not exactly sure what to make of it all right now. I'll just enjoy the ride in the meantime.

Hands down best writing this season. Odd Taxi is one of those rare anime that carries itself with so much grace and wit and maturity that it doesn't have to pretend to appeal to adults. Heck they're all ridiculous animal characters but they already have so much depth in just 2 episodes. I love the dry wit and the funny peeks into peoples' private lives and I feel like this show deserves to be at the top of this season.

I thought this was farfetched for a second, since I thought there had been a couple other animal name drops... but after skimming through the episodes, the only other animal name that was mentioned was Odokawa saying that Shirakawa looks like an alpaca, to which her response was to giggle. You'd think that species names would show up in other cases, especially on the news describing the missing girl and the maybe the bio of the dating app that Kakihana was on. Maybe also in the case of describing the wanted criminal or when Imai was describing the idols' appearances to Odokawa. Odokawa also said that he had to guess on the vision portion of the driving test. This actually seems like a strong possibility, now that I've looked more into it.

Maybe you are on to something here. Only thing that speaks against this theory is that all posters and pictures look like animals as well, even when Odakawa is not around. But well, this could also just be an artistic choice.

there are a lot of hints that point towards all the characters only being animals in his head. All the flashbacks show human silhouettes, there's a moment where the silhouette of the alpaca nurse in the taxi is clearly a human lady, stuff like that. Plus outside of the show itself, a lot of the promotional material shows humans and their animal counterparts. Would be a pretty wild twist.

another thing i noticed that reinforces the theory, in the official music video for the OP song - the two rappers appear as animals in the style of the show when Driver(keep forgeting his name) looks in the mirror for a few seconds, the rest of the video they are human

While interesting I think the problem with this theory, or rather the show if this theory was legit, is that this makes sense when its from the perspective of odakawa but so many scenes have been isolated from him or his point of view that there'd be no reason to show them as animals unless the show was being unfairly deceptive.

Writing in this show so far is really great, and like last episode we get more of that brilliant dialouge that relates each of the plot points together in some way.

In the first scene when odokawa and the Alpaca woman are driving, the Homosapien comedy duo are discussing how creators often stifle their creativity to please certain people, and how creators shouldn't have to do that in order to become popular. This coming right after a scene with odokawa explaining to his friend how he managed to get the number of a very pretty woman without changing himself in anyway. Loved that.

There's a lot of allusion to the idea that what we think might be popular isn't always so, and it shows up constantly. there's the idol group who seem to only have one popular member, despite there being 2 other idols right there with unique concepts to them. There's a follow-up of the kid trying to get popular on twitter, but not understanding what really makes people retweet things. There's the second discussion that the Homosapiens have in the taxi ride with Odokawa where one berates the other for not being funny, only to find out moments later that his friend got booked to do a show without him.

And because the dialouges on point, each of these scenes all relate to one another in some form, and they don't exactly seem random. there was even a point in the first scene with Odokawa and the Alpaca lady where the comedy duo on the radio are talking about relationships and one asks the other about his girlfriend, to which he says he lets his girlfriend take care of him.

This dialouge is played over a clip of the Alpaca woman who tells Odokawa seconds later that her one regret is not letting her parents take care of her, or relying on them when she needed them when she went to college.

I could go on, but honestly I feel like people giving this show a low score probably just don't like looking that deep into the dialouge of a show, and thus gloss over all of these tiny little writing moments that make this show really shine. And I get not everyone likes how grumpy and generally out of touch Odokawa is, but i feel thats the point. And personally, i think episode 1 and 2 have shown he has great chemistry with all of the characters who he comes across in his taxi, despite being the same flat toned character.

I have a wild theory. So we know the missing girl is a black cat. Nikaido says the masks on the other girls were the conditions for their debut. Imai mentions that Mitsuya's dancing has gotten sloppy. During Imai's flashback there's a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment showing one of Mitsuya's eyes and it's grey instead of green. I'm thinking the real Mitsuya went missing and they pulled a switch.
