Even so the distinction between the two is kind of petty and stupid. Hentai and Ecchi are both porn, and while they’re not the same genre technically, it often feels like they are.

They absolutely are still, but you make a great point about why they do what they do and why the Ecchi genre exists. It’s essentially limiting how many times you say, “Fuck,” in a movie to get it a PG-13 rating instead of an R rating while still seeing how closely you can skirt the line. It’s the result of rules being too specific and kind of dumb, but hey, Ecchi tends to have better plot lines, so I get it. If the goal of a piece of media is to make you horny, it’s porn. Maybe some Ecchi doesn’t fall under that category, like Food Wars is a bit of a stretch to say the point is to make the audience horny, but it’s certainly still close, the focus is just more on the food and drama than the foodgasms.
