You know when Ontan starts to get serious, shit IS serious. Shit was serious indeed because we finally uncover the whole thing when it came to Ontan and Kadode's backstory, and ofc, that their from different timelines..... WHAT. Up till now, Ontan was nothing more than the "meme" character of the show that when serious was serious, like I said. But this episode completely flips that script.

I mean, now everything we saw in that Kadode backstory episode makes so much sense now and I love it. Loved the direction of this episode as well. The little things like when the aspect ratio went from 4:3, signifying that up till now, Ontan wasn't sure of the future and of herself, but then, as she rewrites the script and saves Kadode, it goes back to the normal aspect ratio. PEAK CINEMA.

TWO KISSES BACK TO BACK EPISODES?? THAT'S A BIT TOOOO HAPPY NOW. Yeah shit is NOT looking good for these next couple of episodes.

Another amazing episode. Finally got the full story with what happened in that original timeline. But man I wish they would’ve done the Kadode and Ontan backstory arc now instead of earlier in the season when Ontan met Oba.. narratively would’ve fit way better here than just having Oba describe stuff to Makoto

Glad Futaba left that terrorist shit alone and realised that violence only leads to more violence, although as we know at this point it really doesn’t even matter. The invaders and humans are destined for war unfortunately but at least Futaba won’t have blood on her hands

So the full backstory about Ontan’s original timeline is interesting. You can’t time travel, but you can overwrite your consciousness onto another timeline.. feel like shifting mechanic will definitely come back into play at some point. It’s interesting to see that Ontan completely changed her personality in this new timeline so that Kadode would never be isolated, bullied or fall into that dark place she did in the original timeline. If only Kadode knew all Ontan has been thru for her..

But that’s kinda come at the cost of the entire world since the invaders were on their way off world in the original timeline and now the end of the world is approaching.. worth it to save a friend tho

Also Ontan definitely has her memories back right? That cheeky “as long as everybody’s here” she gave Oba at the end wasn’t for nothing..

RAAHH BACK TO BACK ONTAN AND OBA KISSES?!!! This romance has come out of nowhere and developed so quickly lmao. Asano sensei what’re you cooking.. 5 days to d day I need the next ep!

I still feel like it would have been better to put the whole flashback here instead of back when Oran met Oba, but we get the summation here and the full story now, so it still works out as a cool story and Oran's strong dedication to Kadode.

I both love and hate this episode, due to the structure of the adaptation and the moving of events things feel less deserved, the flashback arc didn't feel as good. In the manga the Kadode death scene was devastating and the "for you, I am absolute" scene made me cry, I still cried here but not as much. Also unless next episode completely diverges from the manga Fubata's storyline isn't as interesting since we haven't seen her as much before
But, where it changes from the manga the adaptation thrives, the talk of Ontan with Isobeyan is a little different than the manga, and it is better as it added the fact that Ontan is at fault for the destruction of the world, the manga implied hard that she feels it, but never did another character said it to her, adding to how powerful her conviction is to prove both to herself and probably for Isobeyan that she was right (please let the anime original ending focus on her as much as possible), the adaptation of how Ontan defends Kadode is also masterful, and as usual Hiroshi is best brother in anime, and I feel like the most important thing in the story which is Ontan's and Kadode's deeply complex and sad psychology is treated as it should, even with some of the best scenes aren't as good (they still have a chance to do the best scene right) and I feel like the friendship, as usual is just done so good in the anime (no wonder, one of the script writers made digimon)
I have confused feelings on the anime, yet I feel it's a mandatory watch for fans and most of the important stuff is done very well
Now to the episode proper
This episode was Ontan's episode, allowing us to finally see behind her mask. To know why she is the way she is, I encourage everyone to rewatch some of her funny scenes, especially ep4 I think? When she talks about marshmellows and how she's the enemy of the world, hits very different now (also the episode in general was great for her), the episode shows again how twisted the idea of justice can become, both the children in Kadode's class claiming it's justice to hate her justice because of pure hate, how Kadode's death isn't just, but Ontan trying to prevent it caused the end of the world and the SHIP storyline
But my favourite thing thematically in the manga is the doreamon side of things, I admit I've only read like two doreamon chapters but the manga's take on the premise is very interesting
Makoto and Oba are just such a wholesome duo and I love their interactions but Ontan and Kadode are undoubtedly the best friendship in anime

@SamBlack yes, the change maybe made sense for the movies but the flashback arc is one of the best in manga, and separating it removes from the impact

Pretty damn good.

As usual the animation, voice acting, etc. were excellent. My only minor criticism is that I feel this revelation would have hit harder/felt more impactful if it had immediately followed the Kadode suicide scene-episode the way it does in the manga. At the time it was a shock for me to learn that we were following two different characters at that point. In the show we get the suicide scene and then they just leave us hanging for another six episodes before clearing it up with this one. It was still good, but that was kind of an odd choice.

Good episode, could have been more impactful if the series was structured a bit better at times but there is still impact in there with focusing on Ouran's backstory with the different timelines and how much the impact of Kadode's suicide in her original lifetime left her feeling. This really does re-contextualize Ouran as a character beyond just a comedic, over-the-top personality and gives those scenes much more weight considering what she went through to get to this point. At least visually, this episode delivered strongly.

@animejas Ontan is one of my favourite characters in media exactly because of it, you can't reread or rewatch the story and see anything she does the same way. The most idiotic and funny moments on first read are heartbreaking the second read

Really strange episode; the time shifting seems a little unecessary but may prove more important later. I guess she didn't throw away the gun since everyone showed up so this may be a problem later.

Edit: it seems I missed a couple episodes that might give more impact to this one.

Great episode, this also also were the flashback would of fit (in the manga), as I think it would hit harder.
Only 5 days, the mothership doesn't have long left.

Looks like Oba jumped the gun a little with explaining Oran's situation to Makoto. Now a random dumb friend knows something she potentially doesn't know herself.

And childhood Oran is amazing for being able to switch gears so drastically and stand up for Demon-chan.

Giving us a soft recap of those weird couple of episodes in the alternate timeline so long after the fact feels kind of strange. I feel like it would have been better merging this episode with those and leaving them at this point in the story, so as to avoid repeating content and to avoid having what felt like a really random non-sequitur at the point we originally saw the alternate timeline stuff.

Even though the anime cuts out a lot of things from the manga, I still like the pace. However, just in this episode, I think they shouldn't have cut anything, as the episode itself would be more "interesting".

I'm not complaining, because as I said, the anime is doing well, but there are episodes like this one, where you can't cut any scenes. Overall, it was a great development episode, and that kiss at the end was unpredictable hahahaha

No fucking way that bowl cut dude took the invisibility cloak from that alien. Did they really just forget about it? I mean I guess they couldn't turn back to get it either, but this can't end well

And is Takarada really an alien? 0_0 If so, humans are so screwed because I bet he snuck something into that AI. If he isn't though, he may be in trouble as the bowl cut guy might kill him anyways

Also... ONLY 5 DAYS LEFT? I'm pretty sure we had a month left like one or two episodes ago. It's all about to go so wrong in the next episode isn't it? I keep thinking it'll all go wrong in the next episode, but I think it finally will this time. Oran didn't get rid of the gun for starters. Either someone close is getting shot, or Futaba is going to follow through on the plan and kill someone at the station

There's also the mothership coming down soon and starting that fallout

I'm so jealous of people who can bingewatch this in the future! >n<

This episode is nice, I finally got to see what happened after those 2 amazing flashbacks episodes which I loved, those were the best episodes of the whole anime since it's dark and emotional, it took a while to see the outcome but it's finally here, what I do find weird is the alien guy showing that random girly guy the things that happened in the other world line, why should he know? I don't find that guy to be important to the story, he's just a random NPC in this anime so far so why should he get to see something as important as that flashback? I would have preferred if that flashback was shown to Kadode instead so she could see the things that she did in the other world line to make her reflect about it or something and make the story dark and emotional again. I also would have preferred if this type of episode was shown a lot earlier, right after the 2 awesome flashback episodes.

I do have a question, what happened to Ouran in the previous worldline after she entered that time machine thingie? did she disappear from that worldline to merge with the Ouran from another worldline? or did she send her memories and keep existing normally in that other worldline?

Anyway, pretty good episode, one of the better episodes for sure, 5 more episodes to go, I only hope this anime stops doing the Slice of Life stuff already and gets serious from here on.

@xZabuzax well... In the manga the flashbacks episodes were supposed to be here, I feel Makoto was shown it since the focus is on Ontan and the story didn't want to let Kadode see it and then directly move to meeting Ontan, also he is there to comment on the situation, Kadode would be in too much shock. They had to have an outsider and between broccoli head, Makoto and Futaba Makoto was the best choice
It was said that Ontan's consciousness was transferred so they merged

Yeah, the anime did say that, so Ontan's consciousness was transferred to another worldline, this part I get, what I don't get is what happened to the Ontan from that other worldline after she transferred her consciousness, she kept existing normally in that other world line, right?

@Guilmon1 Hmmm I see, if she did disappear then it's weird to see her brother agreeing to it, I mean, he basically helped her disappear out of existence, she's basically dead in that other world line and she didn't even say goodbye to her parents, family or friends, it was kinda selfish of her.

Anyway, if the anime skipped some details about how the world lines or consciousness work, I don't mind the spoilers.

^^explanation to the timeline hopping
It makes sense for his character because of his ideology of finding someone you care for and protecting him, in his case it's Ontan, he will care more for her wellbeing than his own
And Ontan is selfish, don't forget she literally risks dooming a timeline to save Kadode

With this episode, everything has become clear.
Ontan's story is truly tragic. Her decision to sacrifice others for the sake of one person reminds me a bit of Life is Strange.
I'm now very curious to see what will happen to them after the catastrophe, and whether any of this will bring Ontan some sense of fulfillment.

Retelling of the past events with the missing pieces added this time. Good storytelling/directing again. Hiroshi's such a great guy. I think something's atleast up with Ontan at the end there, prolly got her memory back like Oba thinks. Btw watching an elated baby Kadode was adorable.

This episode is so pivotal with many revelations. So the backstory did happen but on a parallel timeline.

And it's Ontan's fault as to why they are invading. It was mentioned that the invaders were the original inhabitants of Earth. I don't know how long ago but there's a lot being alluded to.
