Well, this turned into an odd coincidence. Hananoi's birthday is coming but the memorial service for Hotaru's grandfather is the same day.

Still, Hotaru had Hananoi on her mind and wanted to so something special for him.

If i’m not wrong, until a couple of episodes ago, or might be more than that, this show was trying its hardest to convince Hotaru is some girl who can’t tell left from right when it comes to basic human nature.. more importantly doesn’t know what liking someone means to begin with, but now all she has in her mind is how to get kissed by or kiss someone… a real downward spiral with character growth lol.

I mean who would leave their family memorial ceremony just to spend time with a creep insecure guy. By the way, the more they show his flashback bits, the more I’m getting convinced his parents left him intentionally lol. In the end a really stale effort to somehow convince just how much of an OTP they are, but no, nobody’s buying this lol, and nobody would even with a "supposed-to-be and upcoming tearjerker" backstory.

Next week is Hananoi's birthday. Since it’s the peak season for cherry blossoms, they decide to go flower viewing together, and Hinase suggests making a bento. Although Hananoi is delighted with just that, Hinase wonders if there is something more she can do for him.

However, she soon realizes that her grandfather's memorial service, planned long ago, falls on the same day as Hananoi's birthday.

By this point im convinced that Hananoi's parents just don't care about him. I feel for Hotaru's sis at always being asked for love advice though. Sad seeing Hanaoi with that clump of letters though. Better to be able to see his parents than receiving those i think. But meeting Hotaru sure was the best way in mending that wound in his heart. Nice to see Hanaoi find the motivation to take his first steps in overcoming his circumstance.

I love that she keeps going to her older sister for advice thinking she’s an expert and has all the answers when her older sister has never even been in a relationship 😂 it’s so cute that she trusts her and has a good relationship with her, I love that so much.
Points to her older sister for her continuous awesomeness. I love that she made sure Hotaru could get away. After the way her parents made her birthday more about her little sister, it’s really nice to see her older sister make time for Hotaru and ensure that she’s able to goof off and be a high schooler.

I’m so happy Hotaru was able to get Hananoi to enjoy his birthday after he made sure that she felt loved on hers. I love that she knew where to find him.
“I don’t want you to leave me behind.”
“I won’t leave you behind.”
You could really see his thought process this episode too, and how Hotaru is helping him grow. He realizes that how he’s been living needs to change, and is making an effort to overcome that. I’m proud of him.

It's simply incredible, seeing his story, his insecurities, his frustration with his parents, the hatred and resentment of children that his parents give more affection than their own son, he failed Hotaru in elementary school, but now he will be her protector and she will be his angel.

Wow, Hinase’s grandfather memorial service and Hananoi-kun’s birthday happen to take place in the same day. Simply by coming straight from the memorial service to Hananoi in order to see the cherry blossom, Hotaru is truly loving Hananoi and their relationship is starting to get stronger.

They are meant to be together and Hananoi will do anything to protect her, he promised it. This birthday for Hananoi was special from the other ones by having Hotaru beside him and celebrating together.

I really don't think they want you to feel sorry for Hananoi, just showing why he's awkward. When he first fell in love with Hotaru, he was very possessive. Now, since he's been in a relationship with Hotaru for a while, he's growing out of it. At least, that's my impression of this episode. Even though Hotaru just being with Hananoi isn't going to solve anything.

Such a cute episode. I am glad it seems like Hananoi slowly starts to grow out of his creep/obsessive side of his, making it more enjoyable to watch.
I loved how her sister helped Hotaru get away from the memorial to see Hananoi on his bday.

He was calmer this episode, but it still only feels like the most basic of all basic plots. He has a part in her childhood that is fairly meaningless in the grand scheme of life but somehow it's driving the entire story and for some reason he won't tell her. Episode 9 and I am still waiting for the supposed incredible turn around that is coming that makes him make sense. Even if her changes, hell, if he changes it will make him even more boring than he already is. All he has going for him currently is very mildly(by anime standards) being creepy and attached. If he has character growth out of that he has literally nothing left.

@Vicmiceli but now he will be her protector and she will be his angel

this felt like a middle schooler trying their best to put a label on a toxic shitty relationship. no guys, he's around me constantly and got a job at my job and intimidates random men because he is my protector. Worse because as the viewer we know this is him with all women, and who knows how many that number is lol.

Yeah I was gonna say...until that final scene I thought I might have missed an episode or something given the big reveal at the end of last week that they went to the same school as kids went completely ignored. But anwho, it's funny, an episode about a birthday less than two days before my birthday. Made me realize I'm old enough to be their father. That was a depressing thought.

This show has come along a bit since the early episodes where Hananoi-kun came across as a monster wearing a human's skin. I could even relate to his resentment over his parents not being there for him, no matter how altruistic their reasons. Reminded me of how I thought the mom from that cgdct show where they go to Antarctica was a bad mom and caught shit for it on here. But I digress. The show's still not great or anything, but it has shown some improvement. Will the last 3 episodes continue the upward trend? Only time will tell.

I knew the moment Hananoi said he’d never been excited for his birthday before that something was gonna go wrong, well dead relatives will certainly do it, I doubt Hotaru’s grandpa would mind that she wanted to spend her boyfriend’s birthday with him but I understand that it’s something she should probably attend. While that is upsetting, I did like that this gave Hananoi an opportunity to self reflect and look back which also gave us more info on his backstory, it was stuff you could already infer from what was known already but it was still upsetting to see, his parents might be doing a good thing but they’re bad parents for sure.

I also liked that call between Hananoi and Keigo, not just for the hilarious moment when Hananoi immediately hung up the first time Keigo called, but also because Keigo realized Hananoi might actually be a good guy, I’m hoping some folks who still can’t get behind Hananoi are having similar thoughts, he ain’t all bad lol. But the cherry on top of this episode was definitely those last moments between Hananoi and Hotaru, probably some of the sweetest so far, and like Hotaru pointed out, it is a nice change to have her seeking out Hananoi this time. I’m really glad she was able to visit him on his birthday, I’m sure it’s one he won’t forget now.

Now at episode 9 and getting more infos about his background. So, his parents are constantly away and take care of other children in need. And he gets jealous of them and eventually grew up to become this guy with a twisted perception of human relationships. Sorry if I may sound harsh, but the so-called reason that is revealed doesn't convince me and make me sympathize with him. Actually, he seems even creepier to me now. Maybe it's also because I know ppl in real life whose parents are doctors without borders or are working for the UN, and they didn't turn out like him, on the contrary actually. Also, it's not that he didn't have anyone from the family to look after and care for him, even if it's "just" his grandma.

Fuck man as soon as I wanna write this show off they always bounce back with an absolutely adorable episode like this. It may not have gone perfectly according to plan, but Hananoi and Hotaru did get to spend his first birthday since they’ve been together.. well together, and it was so cute. I still got issues with hananoi kun personality and what not but you know cute shit like this almost makes up for it.

If she can continue being a positive influence on him and he sheds some of the possessiveness and insecurity, they’ll be cooking. They did address my whole issue with their relationship coming so quickly too. If he’s had a crush on her since they were kids that makes total sense.

What a lovely episode! The flashbacks to Hananoi's childhood birthdays were hard to watch; the boy has some tone-deaf parents. Thankfully, Hotaru's family is much better at reading the room, most notably her sister, who is not only funny, but kind, too! ^_^

The last scene was beautifully directed. I particularly loved the colors!

I still don't get how the author trying too hard to connect Hananoi childhood past to Hotaru. I bet author doesn't really thinking about their past till at some point, change mind midway just because it may look cool at the end.

Oh well whatever the story behind the decision, this spring theme looking alright unexpectedly. Hanakana doing magnificent job as always. Her sis also doing such a cool act as well, i like her already. But overall, if only fish studio can make a better visual, without that UGLY PURPLE TRANSITION, i think this can be a better watch. Again and again its been write about....

love hotaru's big sister. she's the type of older sibling we all need in our lives. i have been thinking this for awhile, like most in this forum, eff hananoi's parents. no wonder he ended up the way he is. they legit barely make ANY effort to be there for him as a child and unfortunately into his teenage years as well. bro, great way to neglect him. great that you're a humanitarian! but don't ignore your family, especially if it's YOUR goddamn child who is still young asf, you left at home that feels like 99% of the time for fuck's sake. makes me want to punch them in the face and tell them they are the worst fucking parents ever for leaving their child to grow up without them around. i would feel the same way as hananoi when it came to those letters. it's also a shame hananoi isn't able tell his parents how he really feels. like he's holding it all back for the time comes to unleash it all out if his parents ever fucking comes home. glad he still has his grandmother tho. and now the post credits scene from last episode makes sense. hananoi did somewhat know hatoru during their elementary years. the haircut incident to be more specific. hananoi shouldn't blame himself for not being there for her during that incident. he was just a kid then and kids don't always know what to do when something like happens right in front of them :/

Its so fucked up that the only pictures Hananoi has of his parents are with other kids. Why don't his parents call him? Its just sad.

The sister: "this kid" made me lol

the mom told Hotaru that it would be okay to skip the memorial service, she should've just skipped.

Uhhh... why wasn't Hotaru wearing black like everyone else? Even the little sister was wearing black

Ahhh yes, acknowledging the middle child and how they're basically shut down or prevented from doing things. I strongly relate to that :(

Hananoi must've felt extra lonely when he saw the family by the river.

Hotaru should've gone home and changed into something cuter lol

Damn this episode had me tearing up. Ugh I love them so much. Hananoi has grown quite a bit. I'm proud of his character development <3

Hotaru wanting to celebrate Hananoi's first birthday together as a couple, the most important people are his family...that are not available for him. Hotaru's cooking up a fine itinerary, but when it comes to the kiss, she finds herself being flustered enough to seek her older sister for help...which is the worst example since she doesn't know as well. The supposed date on April 6, which coincides with their family's memorial service of their grandfather, Hotaru has a choice because she's not as close (as her mother would proclaim), but she does so anyway. With Hananoi being lonely for the day, and the memorial service done, Hotaru's older sister covers for her since the adults will be blathering about their own business, and since the day is still bright, Hotaru is given the green light to go find Hananoi.

Meanwhile, Kurata calling Hananoi out of nowhere and being worried about him as a "good guy", he thinks otherwise. For a boy whose family doesn't really communicate with him much being doctors and spending time with other kids instead of him, it definitely feels gravely insulting from his POV, for someone who reciprocates love but doesn't receive from people at all (which I can resonate with him). And Hotaru being the first person who puts him first, he wants to protect her with every fibre of his being within his messy and tumultuous life, even if it means over-protecting her and intentionally lying to her about his whereabouts. Hotaru literally running for her life to find Hananoi and entrust herself to him, he also wants to make her his No. 1, changing his outlook of life and the romance between her and himself.

The scaredy cat of Hananoi is no more, and Hotaru is his wholly dedication.

I actually liked this episode. We've got a little bit into Hananoi's past and his emotions, I felt for him. Sure he is toxic in the way he thinks and it's definitely not a good mindset to be in, but it made him feel more real.

But I guess he is also too hard on himself if he still beats himself up over something that happened when they were little kids, and I think they didnt even knew each other.

Such horrible parents man... I mean, if you don't want to take care of your kid, why make one just to leave them in misery? The biggest WTF here is they seem to be taking care of countless other kids abroad. As their kid I'd assume parents hate me or I was an accident or something...

IDK but I would have skipped the memorial to celebrate my bf's birthday (even her mom said it was ok to not go since Hotaru didn't even know grampa that well), specially if I know that his family basically abandoned him. But idk, I don't see death in the same way majority of people do. It seemed kind of cold and just a way for the author to create some 🌈drama🌈

And before someone tries to come for me (JK) the flashback to how Hananoi gave his best to give Hotaru a memorable birthday, it only made me think worse of Hotaru.

Also the animation in this chapter was visibly bad, the last chapter had it's moments but this chapter was very noticeable how the quality has dipped.

WHAT A TWIST. I had to ask my cat if he wanted to play twister because I'm playing it right now with that reveal that Hananoi was in the same elementary school. Now some things are really clicking into place like Hotaru being bad with remembering classmates so she wouldn't remember him, Yao making a comment about Hananoi being familiar, Hananoi thinking that Hibiki is better than him because she was there for Hotaru during those times, etc. Can't wait to see what happens when this comes to light!

The sakura viewing season episode and it's Hananoi's birthday. Ended up together depsite having to attend a family event first for Hotaru. Seemed Hananoi was there when Hotaru's hair were cut by her best friend at elementary school from the flashback. We also learnt how Hananoi wants the person he loves put him first due to his parents left him to do charity work overseas.
