A new Koukaku Kidoutai (Ghost in the Shell) television anime was announced by production company Bandai Namco Filmworks on Saturday. The new television anime adapting Masamune Shirow's sci-fi action manga is scheduled for a 2026 airing.

The anime was unveiled through an announcement trailer at the DEEP DIVE in sync with GHOST IN THE SHELL music event on Saturday, commemorating the 35th anniversary of the original manga's serialization. The event also showcased a teaser visual, featuring the protagonist Motoko Kusanagi (pictured).

Science SARU—the animation studio behind Devilman: Crybaby, Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na! (Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken!), and Kimi to, Nami ni Noretara (Ride Your Wave)—is producing the new anime. The production committee consists of Science SARU, Bandai Namco Filmworks, publishing company Kodansha, and animation studio Production I.G.

The latest installment in the franchise, Koukaku Kidoutai: SAC_2045 - Saigo no Ningen (Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 - The Last Human), compiling the second season of the Koukaku Kidoutai: SAC_2045 (Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045) 3DCG anime series, opened in Japan on November 23 last year.

And just like that, a huge IP gets dropped on Science SARU.

The announcement teaser looks like they're redoing the story that was covered by the original film? Am I reading into this wrong?

A curious way of announcing a new GITS, with old school art.

I personally quite enjoyed the last 3D CGI projects - especially the latter half of the last one - but apparently this one will be 2D again. I'm definitely gonna check it out but these are some big shoes to fill.

Can this be considered the first result of the merger with Toho, or has this anime probably been in the plans for a long time before? Also, since such a reason has already arisen, which show is better to start getting acquainted with the franchise?

I have no words, ghost in the shell is one of my favorite manga and I always disliked how the movie and SAC did their own thing in regards to adapting it, while SAC was good it still lacked the magic of the manga, the movie is straight up trash made my the idiot oshii. This project can be one of the best things ever to be created.

If this is a "remake" of the manga it should be good, although I hope they get rid of the humor like the movie did (it just feels odd).

Anyways, my beloved Motoko is back so I am very happy.

Pretty sure it's no 3d cgi this time. Though not sure if they're planning for a remake sort of thing.

@perseii from the looks of it they are probably going to adapt the manga which the original partially covered.

Utterly pointless for a currently deader than a dead horse franchise. It's my copy of the 1989 masterpiece manga in japanese that is telling me to say it, it's telling it to me through visions of both GITS SAC 2 and Arise (awful, unneded crap).

@Mattinator95 Yeah, I was wondering if that meant re-adapting the same storyline. I guess the answer is "probably".

I still have faith that this will at least be interesting and not be a soulless re-tread or an unimaginative "re-imagining".

@perseii it's IG production behind this, the same ones of SAC 2 Arise and the 2045 CGI crap. It's simply milking bucks for the sake of milking bucks but there's nothing else there anymore.

@perseii Looks like this is the case, but this is nothing new for GitS. Original movies, SAC, Arise - these are all separate, not related to each other.

I assume they are going to change story a lot, perhaps there will be some inspirations taken from other series. What's interesting is that they don't update the timeline if it's still going to be set in 2029. So sort of an alternate retro-future, but to be fair so are the other series now.

@Arcling given that so far they have manga art in the poster and manga panels in the PV, they are adapting the original manga.

@ProudElitist Yeah, I've heard not-so-good things about the more recent shows, but I really like Science SARU's work, and they could be given some freedom to do their thing.

Or, as you say, this could be another sad attempt at milking, completely controlled by the production committee. It's interesting how Science SARU announced only yesterday that they are no longer independent, which I find worrying; a lot of people seem positive about the acquisition, though.

We won't know until they announce the actual staff and more plot details, but I choose to be cautiously optimistic.

(Also, I've only seen the two original movies and haven't seen the TV shows like SAC, so I don't have franchise fatigue like a lot of people here)

@perseii it has nothing to do with fatigue and it's all about the quality of everything past GITS SAC 1, with the SAC movie being the only entertaining - and I stress entertaining, not as good as SAC 1 but definitely better than the 100% crappy filler SAC 2 - thing to come out from GITS in animated form. Arise was terrible (a re-hash of previous stuff with characters barely resembling their former selves) and the SAC 2045 CGI barf the sooner it's forgotten, the better. For my tastes, GITS ended with the 1989 manga and SAC 1 (I'm not a fan of the two movies or Oshii in general), nothing else ever came out of the franchise.

Hell yeah. If they more faithfully adapt the original manga—which seems to be the case going from this promo—Science Saru is honestly a good fit as a studio. Two of their greatest strengths are humor and (surreal) worldbuilding with a touch of grit, so this could be the return of quality GitS media, which we haven’t had since the SAC movie in freakin 06.

Now that was something unexpected! It looks and sounds utterly fantastic. New GitS anime, with 2D art style, adapting the very original manga created by Shirow Masamune (I didn't see absolutely all GitS anime entries, but from what I know, the original story was never adapted in other way than just partially).

On the top of that, Science SARU, that's been recently acquired by TOHO, is working on this anime. Splendid.

Is this going to be a faithful adaptation of the manga, or will it be doing its own thing? If its the latter, where is it going to fit in the continuity of the previous anime shows?

Yeah, their usual art style doesn't seem to suit GiTS. But I will reserve further judgement until we see a proper trailer.

@ProudElitist Production I.G. also animated the first SAC. Honestly, it's about the people involved, not the studio name. In this case, Production I.G. is not even animating the show, they are producers for this project.

I feel this is the first real chance to a get a good GitS anime in 20 years.

@Miragee a one and done thing doesn't excuse the fact that the rest of the output made with the contribution of the same company sucks ass. Which is the reason why I say there's nothing else anymore of this franchise to tell. After SAC 1 the only thing that was somehow interesting was the Stand Alone Society movie, and then a big ladfill of utter garbage that should have never been made. This IP has nothing else to say to anyone anymore, fans or not fans.

Unfortunately that's probably the only part they'll not adapt. I think there's even a revised manga edition without those scenes, redrawn by Shirow Masamune himself. Well, maybe there's a non-zero chance if it's a Netflix exclusive.

@Merve2Love The original manga isn't all that serious though, and has a lot of goofy moments. So this can actually be a good fit. Personally I'm excited to see what they'd do with it.

@Merve2Love Yeah, I get what you mean. I read the manga after I watched the movie and expected it to be as serious, but it turned out to be completely different in tone. If this adaptation sticks to manga it could offer a new perspective, something that hasn't been done before.

@Merve2Love what fans love the most is the 1989 manga, not the overblown and pretentious movies (I used to be a fan of them until I read the original manga, it's the only exception in my general preference for animes over mangas). SAC 1 is simply an interpretation of the mangas, and the 1995 movie it's not serious nor particularly mature. Being a clone of Blade Runner with useless christian crap inbetween does not particularly make you more serious or mature than single reflections Shirow made in the manga (for example, the whole thing about the hospital radioactive garbage being possible terrorist equipment), or single lines of dialogue spoken by the characters in the 1989 Masterpiece. The manga is serious when it has to be and funny when it has to be, it is equilibrated.

Ah, Im sorry^^
But that's not most people.

Most of the fans love this "overblown" Movie. Just talking about the first legendary one, for the sake of argument. Same with Stand Alone Complex.
The Manga isn't popular, compared to those two.

I get it - you're different.
