Hansel & Gretel

At first I thought this started out like The Promised Neverland, then it ended up being like the Jennifer Lawrence Passenger's film. Still can't fathom the point of this story was. Especially with Gretel?, Did she ever exist or was she always a figment of his imagination ?

Wait, so was Hansel schizophrenic? No wonder Gretel's eyes look "dead" (as in, they're not shiny). Also, the ending song caught my attention. Why did they choose Hallelujah Chorus, considering this has nothing to do with Christianity?

ikr
it felt so odd hearing Hallelujah Chorus . That has got to be the most misplaced OST I've heard in anime

Liked the first two a lot, but this one was pretty bad. It felt the least connected to the original tale and the twist with the sister was awful and non-sensical.

For me, it's tied with "Cinderella" for best episode of "The Grimm Variations"

When I first saw the setting of the story, I also intitially thought of "Promised Neverland" - although the only thing they have in common is that their (initial) stories take place in some kind of an orphanage

It's true that it deviates from its original tale a bit more (that includes the plot twist envolving the two main characters), but I don't think this variation is jarring: the story's pace is on point and the main characters are (in their own eerie way) really likeable

It reminds me of a classic sci-fi novel "Captive Universe" by Harry Harrison.

Ok, this episode was really good, I would like to see a sequel of this one. It's really interesting and bittersweet; I think there was a hint about the fact Gretel was an hallucination, in fact her eyes never shined, only Hansel's eyes shone in the episode. The characters were all good in the end, a solid 5/5

The episode was... sweet, I guess... but honestly after the first two episodes, I was expecting something gory, you know to follow along with the theme from the previous episodes. This episode felt out of place and left me with more questions than answers.

they did it. They made this movie look like a faithfull adaptation of the story

Jokes aside I was surprised this didn't turn out a "Promised Neverland". And honestly it doesn't make sense that it didn't. Because I see no reason in growing and educating children like that, and their reasoning for being ready to be sent for planetary colonisation feels nonsense. Sure they did break expectations but it really makes no sense growing children in a run down foster home when your goal is to ready them for planetary colonization

FANTASTIC episode this time around right up my alley! There's no way of knowing what the twist will be until you get there and it's so rewarding when everything comes together. I also thought it was the easiest to understand and follow, whether because the story is less convoluted, they used simpler Japanese or because I was more interested/paying attention than the previous couple episodes. I guess everyone else just wanted it to be a literal copy The Promised Neverland but I think it's good that it defied expectations while still being comprehensible/actually making bucking sense. Other than the Imaginary Friend Gretel twist, but I didn't hate it. Mostly I just LOVED that there wasn't a villain! The previous two episodes had generic moustache-twisting villains but this time around you don't know who to trust so you keep your guard up only for the sweet relief when it turns out that no one is mwa ha ha evil. Actual benevolent adult figures, you love to see it.

I enjoyed Hansel and Gretel. I was surprised coming from how absurd Little Red Riding Hood, episode 3 was actually quite fun. As people mentioned I loved the Promised Neverland vibes. It had a good mix of eerie mystery as well as a creepy horror feel. I loved the hidden undertones/details in the show. For example the children's eyes start out dark when they don't know whats going on but when the truth is revealed to them they get a shine in their eyes. The "witch" was handled well probs my fave character in the episode. The episode felt dark with little to no gore which was impressive. Surprisingly more wholesome than the original fairy tale.

Only gripe I had was since it is a training facility I felt the kids should've had more combat training. Also if you think about it, what was the point of keeping the mission a secret? Idk not to compare but, Promise Neverland had the children in real danger thats why they were lied to. Wouldn't telling the kids in this show make them perform better? The episode could have benefited from a little more explanation imo, like not everyone knows what the snowball earth theory is. Also why were the kids significantly older than Hansel on the other planet? Does time move faster there?

The twist with Gretel was executed well, definitely better than Cinderella and Little Red Riding Hood's twist. I went back to see if there were any mentions of her from other characters and the dialogue was written well to make it ambiguous that "you" could be taken as plural (nice touch, I watched it in dub btw). I felt her not existing was a good twist and fit well with the story better than the other 2 episodes. Honestly it's my favorite so far, I rate the episode a 7/10. Looking forward to the next one.

I liked it more than the first two, especially better than Red Riding Hood. This one wasn't edgy just for the sake of being edgy. I liked how there was a bit of a twist in that the orphanage's secret wasn't actually malicious.

I enjoyed this one, really subverted my expectations of the witch being evil and this being some sort of trap. I noticed Gretel's eyes being dimmer than Hansel's quite early, so I appreciate how they hinted at the twist. It's like a good ending version of TPN or heavenly delusion.

@APolygons2 I could understand this whole flirtation with Black Mirror (as of the third episode it looks like the whole show is going to be an anime version of Black Mirror with a Brothers Grimm theme) and homage to Yakusoku no Neverland, but it already started to feel repetitive after the second episode and the Gretel twist seemed like an unnecessary twist for the sake of a twist in such a science fiction story. The first two episodes more or less worked, but the third seems to repeat them with bait and Switch and elements of science fiction. Not to mention the fact that the sister twist, as I already said, was very forced and would have been more suitable for some kind of paranormal show. Especially considering that no one told us or hinted at the reasons for the appearance of the sister. Just to fit it into the Hansel and Gretel framework? Then it was even more forced.

@APolygons2 Well, so far it doesn't look bad even with repetition. It's just that the first two episodes and the anthology format slightly raised my expectations.

I never watched TPN so this is pretty "new" to me. Probably the one with the best first half so far, that's for sure, but when Hansel opened a portal to some future-station, I can already guess that it's going to be dystopian-world type of situation. I thought that this was going to be the one with magic and supernatural at first.

Regarding Hansel... There's also like no reason for him being schizo, since there's barely any tension and issues throughout the whole story. It felt like it was there solely for the "sad/shock" value.

It was really interesting at first. When compared to the other two, I'm actually really invested in this one, at least that's true until the reveal, since there's like 0 payoff.
Sure, not all story requires a satisfying resolution, but this is just the one that makes me go.... "huh?"
It's like sitting through a dream, it's interesting, but there's no point to this story at all.

So far, it's the one that has the least to do with the source material. Other than the character names, there's like nothing about "Hansel and Gretel" here.

I'm surprised no one else has mentioned The Witch's resemblance to Yuuko from xxxHolic. You know, the "Dimensional/Space-Time Witch". Don't really have any theory or anything of the sort, but I thought I'd just throw it out there in case someone would like to delve deeper.

Pretty sure this is going to be my favorite story. This was AMAZING. Absolutely loved it. I had so many theories of what was going on or what could end up happening and none were correct haha. I did think they could possibly be the last children on earth but not like that. I love a twist that actually surprises me.
The whole time I thought they were raising children for the witch to eat XD

There were definitely some hints that Gretel wasn’t real, at breakfast she never has a tray of food, we never see her in bed, and nobody actually calls her name or looks at her when speaking. They always call Hansel’s name first. Thought that was kinda cool.
I do think that it’s a bit odd for Hansel to create an imaginary sister, it felt like there wasn’t really a reason for him to need her? But I can overlook that cause I actually liked this story quite a bit even if it’s twist I’ve seen done in other media

Also it seems like the character designs were made by CLAMP (?) so that might be why some characters bear resemblance to those series lol

I don't know what to make of this episode.

I understand that its a reimagined dark twist of an original tale, but this is just way beyond the scope of twist.

Original storyline is pretty much gone here.

Also, what's with the horrendous art & animation. How much the art & animation budget was slashed that we get this masterpiece of a mess.

The fear of the unknown looming over all of our existences is heavy indeed and in a way, the greatest fear of all. This episode encapsulated that pretty brilliantly for what it was, with the format and length that it's afforded. Better than the first episode and for sure definitely way better than the second. Episodes like this are a little representation of why I love horror and Sci-Fi so.

I find it remarkable how opinions on this episode vary so widely. Personally i consider it the best, alongside Cinderella. The pacing was slow, yet it consistently held my attention with its air of mystery and unease. After watching it, i revisited to spot any clues about the twist, and indeed, they were there. So, even though it leaned more towards thriller than horror, i believe it was a completely successful episode.

Imo I think Hansel had DID (split personality). I was noticing small details with Gretal that something was off. This time around tho the witch is a good guy who’s goal is to help the children get out of the school house.

My only question is about the time difference when Hansel got to “Earth 2”. That boy who welcomed him was the same one who was sleep all the time

What a pointless, chaotic episode.
First of all, why would you even pretend this is based on the Hansel and Gretel fairy tale? It's completely unrelated, the lesson (don't be greedy) is shoved off to the side and forgotten. The cakes are just something utterly useless - the kids aren't starving like they had been in the tale. They aren't even desperate for shelter - at worst, they looked a bit nervous, mostly remaining disaffected.
The entire episode just felt like cheap thrills and pointless shocks for the sake of nothing, bringing nothing. Every single plot point was rehearsed, boring, done a thousand times over - yet the creators pretend they're creating something new.
The entire plot was a knock off from the Promised Neverland - even with a clone of the mother and the copied running scene (though without the black lady). Even that wasn't done well - it felt like a cheap knock off.
So why bother with it? Why would the aliens do this? What is the reason the robots (presumably) do what they do? Orders from above? Own conviction? Why are the kids trickling away instead of remaining at a steady number - some coming in, some leaving throughout? Are there waves of them? Shouldn't the children be equally as old then? Will the six year old just be alone for a couple of years or will he come as a young little brat? Why cakes? Why bother? Why the forest? Do the robots have a fascination with that fairy tale? Why?
Why did they teach the children pointless dry stuff instead of focusing on the practical? In PN it made sense, it had a solid reason - here, it's just stupid.
Why did the robot mother try to be so creepy? Couldn't the mother and father separate into roles - the scary One, the conspirator? What happened to Gretel? Was she ever alive? Did she die? Did she leave? Was she his childhood friend? Why couldn't she just come along since she was in his mind anyway? What sort of cursed candy did the witch robot give them that they opened all the electronic locks? Was it the box? And for fuck's sake, why are we pretending that 18th century people have the exact right sort of idea about robots? What kind of bullshit is that?
It just leaves me with so many questions - and not the interesting kind either - just the annoying, pointless kind - like the story was told only in half and from the most shallow angle they possibly could.

It likes a lot of mix up anime, yet the end is more good than bad ending, i like that however, it is very confusing and have a lot of plot hole than the other episode, who is the witch? why they train the kids and being secretive to them (to teach them independent? and it feel Gretel is invisible puzzle that didn't fit anywhere. At least i can understand the kids sent before him age different due to hansel being more longer in space.
