For someone who hates her daughter guts, Miri sure doesn't seem to show any sign of trauma or abuse. She seems perfectly fine, both emotionally and physically, so that makes me wonder if the mother actually meant all that or the writers simply ignored the inconsistency in order to avoid making the story darker than pretended.

Anyways, decent episode I guess. The balance between comedy, seriousness and violence continues to feel kinda jarring but the bits of character development are interesting enough to make up for that aspect.

Have you not thought that maybe she built some kind of a "wall", and hides behind that smile of hers ?

I wouldn't be surprised if at some point, she starts looking terribly sad and saying something like "My mama never loved me so I tried to smile to make her feel good about me".

But yeah, in any case, good show and I love the realistic "raising a child" thing, and the comedy with the assassin part (not too realistic lmao).

I'm so sorry, I did not want to make such a heavy post for something as delightful as Buddy Daddies, but...

RE: Why Miri's mother kept the pregnancy if she didn't want it

I did a quick search on the current state of reproductive rights in Japan, which turned into an hour of making myself sad (if you're in a space to be depressed, or want to find ways I'm mistaken, sources below).
TW mention of abortion, rape, spousal rape, domestic abuse, surgery, forced birth, medical abuse

Apparently Japan's reproductive rights are more restrictive that most developed nations. One major factor is Spousal Consent -- while it's no longer required by law, lots of hospitals and doctors still require pregnant people to provide consent from the other parent (even if unmarried, to cover their asses from a lawsuit). This can trap unwilling parents with abusive partners, complicate cases of rape ("He's your husband! How could he rape you? And he wants the child!"), force them to carry to term when they've lost contact with their ex, etc. Abortions are also apparently very expensive, and always surgical (pills that induce abortion, probably the simplest and one of the safest method in the early stages, are all illegal in Japan).

From what Miri's mom said, I can definitely believe she couldn't find a willing doctor, or afford the surgery. If the trafficker didn't know about Miri, that might mean he ghosted the mom and she had no way of contacting him in time (if she's only contacting him after 4 years, maybe that's how long it took to find him and figure out where he'd be at such-and-such a time?).

Considering the probable poverty and abusive situation her mother's in, and her mother's resulting frustration and resentment, Miri is a surprisingly healthy and happy kid.

That was a cute episode, it was nice how they tied it to Rei's backstory. Hopefully this show starts to pick up more traction now, it's really good so far. Also does anyone know why only some OP/ED have subtitles? I remember Spy x Family cour 2 had subs for the OP, and this show has it for both OP and ED. I wish all shows did that, the lyrics almost always connect to the show.

I can finally know why Rei sleeps in the bathtub now! I don’t know why, but seeing him eat cereal was a highlight. I hope to see Rei grow more and more, from becoming ‘Rei Papa’ to perhaps cracking a smile someday.

Though this would end with them returning the girl - and them having to search for the mother a bit longer. But this instead turning into something where the main theme will be the past of the main chars (and the relationship to their parents) - seems appealing. Especially how they used Miri to trigger the memories for Rei - therefore being able to place the flashbacks for the viewer in a way that they do not feel presented randomly.

I'd never imagine seeing a classic Renault 4 in an anime (At least, the ones that I've seen so far), which did make me smile. =)

The episode itself was really impressive and it didn't hesitate in dealing with some darker and realistic themes. The scene with Kazuki talking to Miri's biological mother was one of the main highlights for me. The way that she still tried to defend her abusive boyfriend by slapping Kazuki in the face after he won his fight against that bastard was sad to see, but hearing her going into more detail of how she was taken advantage of by Miri's (now dead) biological father and then left to fend for herself does showcase more of how much mental trauma she has gone through and how she's still struggling in the present.

It did leave me with two impressions on her. I still don't like how she left Miri to wander all alone back in the first episode and Kazuki's words to her aren't wrong at all. Having said that, she too is a victim in all of this and I do have sympathy with her situation. Maybe there's hope for her in the future that she can turn her life around, but only time will tell if that happens or not, depending if she ever re-appears in the story again.

As for Rei, seeing his backstory was also sad. His father pretty much saw him as nothing more than a weapon, with no emotional or fatherly attachment to Rei in the slightest. With a shitty "father" like that, it also makes me feel sympathetic for Rei and how he struggles to interact with much enthusiasm, apart from a few exceptions when it comes to food and video games. So seeing him stand up and help Miri by proudly declaring that he was her father when the police tried to take her away was really sweet.

Maybe one day, he'll be able to smile naturally and I'm sure that he'll be thankful to Miri and her endless energy of happiness. ^_^

I feel so bad for Miri's mum. Abortions are not at all something that's easy to access in Japan (or most of the world really) and she seemed to be forced into getting a child in many many disgusting and unfortunate ways. Let's not forget that the dad was a sex trafficker, so it's really not hard to connect the pieces and find out what happened to Miri's mum.

But I think she tried her best to be a good mum genuinely. She said she wanted to slap her child for being so happy, but she clearly never did. A SA single mum with no financial support is a common tale and the majority of the responsibility definitely is on the awful dead scumbag dad. Though she's 100% at fault for sending her child to the aforementioned sex trafficker, holy shit that's one of the worst and dumbest moves you could do to the poor child.

This is so sad... But completely expected. Japan is massively sexist in a deeply ingrained way. It's always so disingenuous when people say "just get an abortion" for these reasons.

Wow, I am actually surprised that Miri knows Kazuki is not her real papa, unless I missed something before. That's nice, the one who saves her is her "Papa," though kind of a dangerous mindset as well.

Pretty sad situation for Miri's mom, but of course, she should still be a responsible parent for her child, as Kazuki said, it's not the child's fault. More and more people these days don't want to have kids anymore, and to be honest I can understand why as well.

Pretty sweet to see Rei become Papa Rei though, he needs this wholesomeness after having a shitty childhood.

An emotional yet heartwarming episode. Each of them is a stranger with a painful past who comes together as a family (and tries to be a warm family) :) it's nice to see Rei can open his heart to Miri now ♡ Rei papaaa~ :'3

I have no complaints at all for this episode, it's just that... I tried to understand Miri's mother's situation but seriously, when she said that it wasn't her will to give birth to Miri, then it wasn't Miri's will to be born into the world either. No child ever asked to be born into the world especially by irresponsible parents like that. I'm just grateful that she can be free from such parents and have Kazuki and Rei by her side now.

Maybe it's the influence of the atmosphere but ED sounds more special this time, and... take it easy Kazuki, someday you'll meet the right woman, someday...

By far the best episode yet; My only nitpick is how villainized Miri's birth mother was, granted she did go on to say messed up things but I guess what I'm saying is I wish there was more nuance to it than just "this woman is bad for not wanting to be a mom". Doesn't really matter anyway. We got more funny moments and hints of backstory for best dad Rei, so I can't complain.

This show is definitely growing on me. The opening and ending are catchy too.

As for the episode, this is exactly how i expected her mother to be unfortunately. No good parent would allow their young child to make a long trip with no supervision anyways. As for Rei, he seems to like this cohabitation more than he lets on. With that brief look into his past, that explains a lot to his character. Looking forward to more backstory, missions and daily mischief from this crew.

Another great episode! I already love this series. It's in my top 2 favorite series of the season at the moment. The Op is catchy af too XD. You know, I like Spy x Family and Loid is handsome and all, But I like Buddy daddies better :D

I love how this series mix wholesome and dark moments. The post credit scene where Kazuki, Rei and Miri sleep in the same bed is adorable. Also, this part with Miri and rei's hair was too cute

Did the creator really say that? NGL, That would be cool! But I guess they will never officially make them gay not to upset fans in Japan and the rest of the world, unfortunately. As for the trans flag, the colors are there, but stripes order isn't correct (guess for the same reason I mentione earlier XD).

It's Miri's fault, she is making this look way more homo telling them to sleep together and shit, now she officially has 2 dads, it wouldn't surprise me if in one chapter they end up kissing simply because she told them to do it 🤮

Btw I saw people saying Miri is annoying. Umm?? Miri's a KID. If you don't know, kids tend to be loud, playful, demanding, spoiled, and mostly throw tantrums (not all of them but yeah). They cry a lot, laugh a lot (preferably), and play a lot. That's why guardians teach them manners. Kids can be annoying and will really get to you, especially when you're tired, but you can't just hate them. Their touches, hugs, kisses - they really heal you, you know? No need to go this far to understand why she kept Miri : She wanted leverage to get money from the man who made her pregnant, and apparently abused her.

Bringing Miri to this world would ensure her a life with passive income, "if", the mafioso wouldn't have her killed asap.

So yeah.. she seems to be that kind of person, that needs to be around a man that can offer her the life she wouldn't have on her own "and" make her dream come true.

I wonder tho.. did he claim to be her papa because she needed him, or because Kazuki told him that "not doing so" would prove bothersome ?

I think it's a bit of both though, but seeing how easy it would've been to leave her with the cops, I guess he still wanted her around.. lol

I'm on mobile so I can't quote one specific paragraph so sorry about that! but i agree so hard with what you said about miri, she's a kid and actually behaves like a 4 year old, people hating on her have probably never been around kids and/or just don't like them, which is fine but... idk hating on miri for acting like a kid is a stretch in my opinion

I wonder tho.. did he claim to be her papa because she needed him, or because Kazuki told him that "not doing so" would prove bothersome ?

I think it's a bit of both though, but seeing how easy it would've been to leave her with the cops, I guess he still wanted her around.. lol
Like Miri said, a "papa" is someone who saves you. (Go easy on her, she's a kid.) Kazuki told her Rei was also her papa but it was at the moment when Rei "saved" her from the cops and claimed he was her "papa" that Miri was able to call her "papa" freely and recognized him as one (with Rei's consent, too). You're right, it would've been easier to leave Miri to the cops, but Rei also warmed up to her a lot and wanted her around. That's why he quickly accepted the "dinner for three" and maybe was even happy about it. He slept soundly beside her as well. :)

This was such a good episode.
Miri character is really just super charming and one of the truest depictions of a small kid I've seen on a kid's show. That part in the beggining was super nostalgic too, where she wakes up Rei while tapping her mouth with her hand... Used to do that a lot as a kid her age as well xd

i can't stop thinking about what the creator said about wanting to make a story about a modern family, two dads and their kid, and also about the tweet that pointed out that the last image we see of them at the ending (the three of them asleep on the couch) literally has the trans flag as their wallpaper.... when i say this show was made for me i mean it
Source for the tweet?

Aweee this anime is so wholesome~! <3

I love Rei. He's like a kid lol! I love it when Kazuki calls him "Rei Papa~!" Ahahaha! I was so touched when Rei finally claimed himself as Miri's papa. Ehehe! I really love the trio's dynamics.

Miri is bringing their family together. The three of them sleeping together in the end was so cute. Rei finally found a place where he could relax. He actually slept soundly on a bed rather than in a bathtub. Him having a shitty father while Miri having a shitty mother - fate brought them together, I see. Even Kazuki seemed to have a traumatic past as well. But look at them now. :>

[edit: Sorry for calling Miri's mom a shitty mother, but she is. It doesn't mean I don't care about the abuse she experienced cause that... that was heartbreaking. I really feel sorry for her. I wish she found happiness in Miri instead of getting hurt by her laughter. It is so tragic to be reminded that there are parents in the world that, because of the pain they went through, cannot find happiness in their children and... and hate them. It is so damn sad. So she is a shitty mother, but I don't hate her and I understand.]

They're the most precious thing in this world.

I agree with you on everything, especially Miri and kids part! :D
I like both SxF and Buddy Daddies, but I appreciate how Miri is more realistic than Anya

Nice episode but this is becoming more and more homo, if they turn out to really be gay I'll just drop it.
LOL. That's pretty depressing. Also, How is this becoming more homo? They neither kissed nor held hands . Just because there isn't any waifu, doesn't mean it's a yaoi or shounen ai series

"That's pretty depressing" don't make me laugh LMAO
It's Miri's fault, she is making this look way more homo telling them to sleep together and shit, now she officially has 2 dads, it wouldn't surprise me if in one chapter they end up kissing simply because she told them to do it 🤮
Again, that's depressing. They won't kiss because japan is not ready yet (unfortunately), and they might not want to upset the fans in the rest of the world (again, unfortunately). But if they do, what's the harm?

i've been searching for it but i can't find it :( it must have been deleted... but if you look at the last image on the ending, it uses the trans flag colours! if my memory serves me correctly they're even in the correct order, but i might be wrong

If they did this show would become an automatic 10, though like you said it sadly has a low chance of happening. At the same time however I have no problem with it being about just two friends raising a kid, just sucks that thanks to higher-ups wanting to offend as little people as possible we likely won't see any hints of romantic feelings even if that was the intention (Not saying for a fact that they're a couple so don't get mad homophobes lol).

are we ready for more cute little girl running all around the place? lol

what best to start but seeing Miri wake up Rei from his nightmare of the past, and jumping on his belly to make sure he understands? (this reminds me of a scene between Boruto and Naruto lmfao)
time to eat those chocolate circles that Miri wanted, and Rei likes it even more than her, i like how Kazuki is always "you 2 are both kids i swear"

she climbed on him while he was eaiting, my cat does that all the time
she really likes bananas huh
i wonder if that bananya bananya is a reference to that banana anime, not that i ever watched it
do they really want to send Miri away? as much as they like her, their jobs are not the safest ones...

i thought about it last episode, but the opening reminds me of vocaloid songs at the start lol

the boss guy is as scary as always huh, funny to see mc trying to run away as fast as possible

while trying to eat some sand dangos (lmao), the 2 guys talk about how bad their childhood was, damn
pffft, playing rock paper scizor just to see which one pays for a potato

they certainly told her to not ssay papa in front of others, that order made them look like kidnapers, surprised the guy didn't call the police lmao

nothing ever goes the plan of Kazuki lmao whatever he says, she will answer back, even if it's a scary ghost, she wants to see it :D

what the hell, she wanted to find Rei but he was instead sleeping in the bath, gosh that can't be good for your body
better not wet the bed or papa will get mad hahaha also, Rei-kun better smile :D

Miri and Rei having fun in the park (or only Miri...)
meanwhile Kazuki meets with the mother and that ... person who hit her and almost killed Kazuki lmao wtf is his problem? he even ran away after getting hit once, i wonder if he went to get reinforcements

"papa is the person who saved you when you were in trouble" ... that's an interesting one lol
but saying "let's come back tomorrow" when they are trying to leave her there today is kinda sad
well, the mother for sure wasn't happy being a mother, she was a single mother who had to take care of such a noisy kid on her own even tho she never wanted to have a kid
well, that didn't go as planned, so i guess they need to keep her lol

meanwhile Rei saving Miri from the policeman, finally calling himself her papa
i still wonder how they didn't even ask anything else, just cause the 2 knew each other

hahaha a simple 200yen for 3 hamburger deal at the supermarket, and that's already better than the normal food Kazuki makes? LOL we even got a Miri heart (21.44)

lastly, Miri (already can dress alone) asks them to sleep together, and while Rei said it wouldn't be confortable, he seemed to fall asleep way faster than usual LOL
favorite "new girls" from summer <3 ... click sig for older seasons and more possible picks (rip all the other choices)
