It's hard to describe but this feels like a classic story. Almost like a Ghibli movie or Disney princess movie, or even The Princess Bride. Especially the two old men.

the art style was nice but this was a little too misogynistic for my liking. seeing that guy at the end knock fena out after she just got done telling him how much she appreciates that he's not abusive like the others... i know that was supposed to be funny, but it really wasn't. it was just sad.

The art feels like a combination of anime and older Disney movies, but it works really well. Also, Fena can be pretty comical at times.

The second episode was a little bit too fast with the dialogue imo. But overal I have I hopes for this one. I already like the setting.

Also as a Dutchperson speaking here, I must say this: ''Holy moly we got a main charachter in anime who is Dutch!!!!''

Loved the first episode. Animation is superb, I expect nothing less from I.G, but that also means Crunchie put lots of money into this one. We'll see how it'll turn out. The pacing is very much to my liking and the comedy is decent. Very good first episode.

It reminds me of a lot of my favorite Netflix shows. Lots of C&T, B The Beginning, Great Pretender, and Violet Evergarden vibes.

Great Pretender and B The Beginning were also produced by Production I.G, so it's only natural to get the same vibe off of them. I'd say the art style of B The Beginning and Kaizoku Oujo is the same, especially the character design.
I sometimes forget to finish my sentences.

Watched the first episode and already disliked like it, don't get me wrong I loved the visuals but the story feels way to simple and sometimes through this episode I was like ahh ok and is this supposed to be a serious anime or comedic satire anime or a romantic anime.

Pretty good start but why was Fena writing in Japanese, the island looked nothing like Japan. I just hope that the character Toshiyuki Morikawa is voicing is a good guy, I really love his voice.

im digging this silly Disney + samurai vibe, stylish art.
There's bunch of hinted backstory/pre-story that seems interesting but also bit annoying. Like what happened to Fena in that decade, just stuck working there or a slave? Who're those two oldies etc. Then there's samurai & forest thugs?? just a lot thrown at once.

So Crunchyroll ordered the animation of Tower of God, is tower of god a cartoon now? And also the original creators of Fena are Japanese too.

Tower of God is an adaptation of a Korean webtoon. Fena is an anime-original show.

Of course, not all originals who are ordered by Crunchyroll/Netflix/Amazon are similar to western cartoons, but this show exactly is.
Same as Hero Mask or Carole & Tuesday.

SO, if it is original to Japan... written in Japan, animated in Japan, directed in Japan, annnd the only thing American about it is the cash that funded it and whom gets to air it on TV first... you think it's an American cartoon?

you. are. wrong. this is ONLY Cartoon Network's SECOND foray into funding an anime. guess what their first one was? saving 'The Big O' after it got canceled. once more an all Japan original anime with no source material and NO WORK DONE on the show in America.

now if you griped about 'Castlevania' i'd freely admit yep, that's pretty much all American. produced, directed, written, animated and whatnot in North America... the only part that's Japanese is the Konami products/licences from the console games and the Japanese VA's.

when you go to watch 'The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf' are you going to bitch about it being American too? even though the bulk of the work was done by Studio Mir in Seoul South Korea directed by Kwang Il Han. but yes a large part of the screenwriting is by Beau DeMayo.'The Witcher' Netflix live action series creator and head honcho Lauren Schmidt Hissrich is helming this 'anime movie' to dovetail into her work with Henry Cavill etc. oh, the novel source materials are from a Polish author by the name of Andrzej Sapkowski. will you try and claim that anime movie is Polish?

how about 'Kenja no Deshi wo Nanoru Kenja'? going to gripe about Funimation co-producing that one?

oh wait, were you complaining in the past or will be in the future about 'Rising of the Shield Hero' and how Crunchyroll was and still is funding that one too?

you know what, it's people like you that are gatekeeping shows with international staff and will end up demanding a little sticker be placed on your anime JUST like automobiles: 'this anime was made with components from the following countries: ...... but was assembled in ......'

the 'otaku industries' in Japan from the 1980's till around 2000 only got 20-30% of their income from 'foreign sources' either via merch, or licences, disks/VHS tapes, and so on. SINCE 2000 that percentage has slowly increased to nearly 40%. SONYjp bought a large number of shares in Funimation. SONYjp and Funimation JUST recently finalized the COMPLETE purchase of Crunchyroll from AT&T. you don't think the Japanese are looking to expand anime/otaku culture overseas just for grins and giggles? THERE'S BIG MONEY IN IT! and where there's big money, entertainment industries go there. Funimation and SONY got ahold of the European anime streaming service Wakanim. Crunchyroll bought out VIZ Media's European branch of their streaming services. now probably owned by the SONY/Funi/Crunchy conglomerate. Madman the Australian anime service was bought by Funimation. Funi expanded into Ireland (both parts of it), Great Britain, South America. 'the Americans' as you would probably put it are slowly but surely TAKING OVER STREAMING SERVICES for anime world-wide. with a great deal of help from our partnerships with the Japanese.

here's an interesting concept for you. Williams Street, the HQ for [adult swim] and their parent cable network CartoonNetwork are in Atlanta, Georgia USA. know what timezone that's in? UTC -5h. know where Japan is? UTC +9h. Japan is 14 FOURTEEN HOURS ahead of the East Coast of the USA. do you even THINK Williams Street staff-members were EVER awake and 'livestreaming' over the shoulders of the production staff in Japan for 'Fena'? this show was produced under covid confinement in Japan. we didn't even fly OUT OF the USA back then. we weren't permitted to! so nobody from Williams Street was on-site in Japan to 'make it more American'. i do bet here and there more than one 'virtual meeting happened'. but to think THAT kind of communication would turn the ENTIRE show into an American cartoon is preposterous.

just an ol school American otaku enjoyin the life. don't sass me kiddies, i've been otaku probably since before you were born. leave me in peace and i won't bother you either.

I don't know why you wrote all this because I won't read it anyway lol.

If you don't understand, I will repeat: the first episode of this show is similar to a standard western cartoon, but with some edgy moments (stories about rape, etc). That's all, and I don't care who produced this and for what purpose.

It's like Netflix's Carole & Tuesday, who took all generic Disney-esque tropes (pseudo-American world, two mary sues who want to attempt their dreams, English songs, etc) and tried to say that it is an anime because Studio Bones made it. Same as Hero Mask, Yasuke, Cannon Busters, or even Great Pretender.

I never said that all shows that are produced by American investors (like Crunchyroll, Amazon, Adult Swim, Funimation, Netflix, etc) are not anime, but some of them exactly aren't and fully oriented on the western audience.

i wrote it because you need to read it, learn it, and use it. Americans did NOT write this show. we didn't direct it or do ANY of the other project head jobs. i gave you examples of other shows that Americans helped fund, or entirely funded on their own. you don't comment on those shows because just like this one, they are NOT Western cartoons!

i don't know WHAT Western cartoons you're watching but: prostitutes, murder, kidnapping, rape, a girl auctioning off her own virginity, The Golden Age of Piracy approx. 1650-1740, drinking booze, sex, slavery... nigh on EVERYTHING IN THIS EPISODE DOES NOT HAPPEN! in Western cartoons because... we've got LAWS RULES AND REGULATIONS against that stuff! us AND Canada.

so saying this shows IS a Western cartoon is not only ignorant but idiotic! this show's first episode is NOTHING like a Western cartoon. nothing. not a thing. you're hanging your 'decision' based on what? exactly. give me screenshots, timecodes, minute by minute, second by second exemplars. either do that or you're just yet another rando from some other lando who THINKS they know what they're talking about.

i didn't watch Carole and Tuesday. i was entirely and utterly uninterested. so i won't comment one way or the other on it.

i tried Hero Mask, didn't like it, dropped it after a few episodes. made me think it was trying to be a 'cop hero' show spliced into a 'James Bond type of TV series'... like the old TV series 'The Saint' and adding 'super-human/super-natural/super science fiction powers' into the mix. from what i did watch of it, nod. yeah. i'd say that one was Westaboo... and less Weeaboo.

Yasuke, never heard of it, what's the full title?

Cannon Busters, another one i disliked. watched a few episodes and dropped it too. yeah, that one was Western, not just in the setting but in alot of elements. although the Cadillac that turned into a robot was very mecha. Tranformers, American. GoBots, American. ZOIDS... i'm on the fence with that one, i'd say 20/80% split between Western/anime, ROBOTECH/Macross Gundam, anime.

Great Pretender, i'd say that one was easily split 60/40% Western/anime. the 'Ocean's numbers' movies, 'Thomas Crowne Affair', the 'Borne' spy movies, 'The Italian Job', 'Human Target' TV series, GP really did draw aLOT from Western storytelling. but by using SUCH a Japanese main character the ENTIRE season is viewed not just from the 'international flavor' of the ensemble cast. but ALSO by the viewpoints of one Japanese hustler/con-man who is forced into a life of crime because of JAPANESE cultural reasons. and later on in the series more stuff happens to lead the entire story back upon itself in one giant ouroboros.

going back to the last sentence of your first paragraph, "and I don't care who produced this and for what purpose." if you don't care: don't worry about it, don't comment on it, and don't judge it for being aimed at a Western or Asian or Whatever viewership the show was intended for. if it was ONLY intended for the USA,CAN, EU etc. they wouldn't even be BROADCASTING it in Japan in October, or have recorded a Japanese Vocal track. it would have been just like 'The Last Airbender' and its sequel series 'The Legend of Korra'. produced and animated by Mir in South Korea exclusively for Nickelodeon to be shown in the USA/CAN.
just an ol school American otaku enjoyin the life. don't sass me kiddies, i've been otaku probably since before you were born. leave me in peace and i won't bother you either.

Such an excellent and enjoyable first episode, really hooked me up.

The beginning, starting with a bit of her past. A girl that escaped death and stranded on an island where women are used as tools. Fena, a beautiful white-haired girl tries to escape and start an adventurous life.

I really love her personality, someone without a care about the world in front of her, funny and cute as hell. The other girl with her, Angie (thanks for the fanservice) is the older-sister type.

The voice actors are stacked too. Asami as Fena's VA, Yuuki Aoi as Karin's VA (my favorite), and the blonde haired guy VA.. can't remember the VA at the moment.

The visuals are pretty beautiful too, love the shots from the city. Espically the visuals in the ending where shot saved by Yukimaru.

The character design is just amazing, I'm in love with the samurai-like design. Yukimaru's design is the thing I like the most and his group looks badass too.

Anyway, a really good first episode. Seems like her adventure will start from now on. She'll most likely cut her hair in order to show her resolve. Pretty obvious.

Gave me OP/YOTD/Great Pretender/B:The beginning vibes. No wonder tho; studio and producer.
I'm expecting some good action from this too cause that speedy yukimaru style was insane.

The art and animation is really pretty but BIG SIGH...

I already dislike how this is going.

The forest end of the episode has got me cringing the whole time. Cliche of an MC and "love interest" perhaps (obvs could be Yukimaru).

My interest in this show has gone really down. I'll watch a few more and see how this goes. So far, I have low expectations.

This is just the type of anime I will like. I ever see interview with the staff, they said this is combination between shounen and shoujo.

The dog is so cute, I am more focus on the dog than what Fena said XD

I am thinking, are they serious to rescue Fena by sending grandpa like them? XD

Shounen + Shoujo hybrids are extremely underrated. I love this type too - it's interesting to spot and look out for since it obviously doesn't have an official classification or label, but they really create some of the more unique and moving animes this way. I also consider series like Noragami and Mahoutsukai no Yome to be in this same category.

Also consider Inuyasha, one of the peak and finest examples of the execution of this on a longer and large scale.

I began watching and will continue watching Kaizoku Oujo partially for this very reason.

I also like this combinationm. In my case, I consider mix between shounen and shojo if:
1. Mangaka has experience work for shounen /seinen and shoujo/josei magazine (Ex: March Comes in Like a Lion, Kono Oto Tomare, Mashiro no Oto)
2. Shoujo manga with a lot of action (Ex: Banana Fish, Akatsuki no Yona)
3. The author told us that you can think this is shoujo or shounen (Ex: Vanitas no Carte).

I also excited to watch Fena, one of the reason is because of this.

Actually surprised by the amount of comedy this series has. Was honestly expecting something a bit more "dark" given the synopsis.

OK start overall. Guess the biggest mystery in this show will be how 23yo slave Fena managed to remain virgin in "Prostitution" island for this long.

Amazing art style, amazing animation, amazing visuals, amazing cinematography, amazing aesthetics, amazing soundtracks, amazing music, not sure about the plot, the story, the characters, OP & ED just yet, felt like watching a movie instead of a TV show, felt straight out of Disney, felt straight out of the good old 80s (for some reason) made me want to watch it only at nighttime in pitch darkness for better experience and maximum enjoyment, watching this at daytime ruins it, that's just how much it amazed me, 10/10 first episode, 100% fluid anime , and I'm 100% hooked, and I hope it won't disappoint.
