Good premiere, already has me interested enough with the action and animation, even the CGI is pretty damn good. Leave it to A1 pictures to deliver on this part.

Lena looks cute and seems like a caring young lady. I love me some of that silver haired beauties and she's no exception. She seems to hold a lot of care for the 86 unit, even though they are unmanned drones.

Fuckin’ Glory to the Spearhead Squadron! Not sure why, but I loved seeing that.

So much for "unmanned" units huh... It was pretty obvious this was the case, but I wonder if Lena actually knows this. Shinei is already an interesting character, not just is the leader of the Spearhead Squadron, but that task he had to do, to put his squadron companion out of his misery, that's tough.

One of the best premieres this season so far.

Seems interesting and looks good so far! Feels like reading the light novels would really help fill in the details with this one?

And, Mimimi's (Tomozaki) voice actress is voicing Lena! Off to an early lead for best girl.

As someone that has already read the light novel, all I can say is that all of your complaints about this 20 minute episode will be addressed in later episodes

Oh, a retcon to make this chick way more believable for a person coming from a privileged class...sounds even sloppier.
As RayReynolds mentioned - her being an arrogant and misguided odjou-sama in the beginning would be more fun.

I wouldn't call it a retcon. It's the character development she gets throughout the series. Yes, she's being very hypocritical and her "false saint" behavior is pretty insulting towards the 86. But the 86 feel the same way that you felt while watching this episode, so don't worry, this matter will be addressed in the next episodes, and I personally think that it is addressed pretty well. But that's just my opinion, we will have to wait to see if you will agree with me in this matter or not.

In relation to the other topic, If Lena was more agressive towards the 86 the story would be a lot more cliché. There are several movies, anime and games that had similar stories or character arcs (character is racist toward some group, character is then forced to interact with someone from this group, character stops being racist because this person that he was forced to interact is kinda cool). Such as In The heat of the night, Cross Ange, American History X, Detroit become Human, NieR Automata, Senjou no Valkyrie etc. Lena is not a savior and not a saint, and yet she naively acts like one. This will blow up in her face. It's a different approach and I really like it.

I was sceptical about A1 picking this up but they did a fine job adapting this so far. Nothing extraordinary, but it's also not the SAO kind of soulless just go through the motions anime adaptation.

'Hey, bro, how do I hammer the point to the audience that this is a dystopia?'
'Show humans that look exactly the same in the dystopic society and make the subhumans as distinct from each other as possible.'
'Hm, will that be enough? What else can I do?'
'Did the news lady make blatant propaganda blatant?'
'Yeah...'
'I don't know, bro. Make them eat artificial food and get excited about real food.'
'Bro...'
'Bro?'
'You're a genius.'

Jokes aside, I enjoyed this first episode, the premise sounds interesting and the art is pretty. I don't have much to say besides that, I'll be keeping up with it to see how it develops.

Maybe you meant to word it differently, like "her getting people killed under her command. The way you worded it kinda made it sound intentional, lol

alshu said:

Idk about that though. A commander can feel awful about the soldiers that died under their command, but still be a worthwhile commander in action. Same goes for Lena.

alshu said:
1. Come on, don't spoil the story for anime only watchers.
2. Yep, this is ridiculous.
I wouldn't count that as a spoiler. In the episode, while talking to her uncle, she mentioned that she'll give it her all when commanding the Spearhead squadron. And her uncle even mentions that she works too hard and she should just do the bare minimum. Clearly she's not putting in effort to get soldiers killed. Of course she's putting in the effort because she wants those battles to be a success and a successful battle comes with minimal casualties.

I'm honestly not sure why you find wanting to command the 86-ers to minimize casualties a "ridiculous" thing. I get that pitying the oppressed while living a relaxed life is ridiculous, but not the action of being a handler to minimize casualties.

alshu said:

The first portion of the episode is from her perspective, that's why it feels like it's force feeding the character to us. But nothing in this episode indicates that Lena is a character worth sympathizing for. We see her feel bad for the fallen soldiers, but clearly the soldiers themselves are irritated by her pity words.

As someone who hasn't read the light novels this episode comes off a bit heavy in exposition dumps.

Alot of terms/names of mechanical warframes and alot of complicated sounding names of people and countries. I'm all up for a good sci-fi war/politic anime but it makes me wonder if I should read the LNs instead? For better context, since sorry to say I don't particularly trust A-1 Pictures.

So far all this episode has shown me is:
1. We have a cute sliver haired waifu with a righteous sense of justice apparently.
2. A country full of silver haired, silvered eyed civilians, potentially from eugenics engineering?
3. A war "without" any human casualties (doubtful).
4. The news said 85 districts in the Republic yet the show is called "86." Is there a hidden district where all the wars take place primarily to maintain the peace in the other 85?
5. Drones used in warfare, likely run by the lower class of this world in secret from the general public's perception.
6. "Eighty Six" and "Pigs" - derogatory terms for either the lower class (military forces) of the Republic or the opposing countries forces.
7. "Real eggs and milk." - Food storage in the Republic maybe?

----Second half of the episode-----
Seems I was right, all the military forces seem like normal humans of mutiple ethnic groups. Likely lower class citizens of the Republic like I stated above.

The Republic seem to be run on the principle of "See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil."

At this point in the story you still miss a lot of context of what San Magnolia is (and just how truly fucked up it is) so some of the subtleties in Lena's interactions with 86 might off to you, but you'll come around after a few episodes let me assure you.

Wow so much similarities to Code Geass Akito the Exiled. White-class people commanding 86s(elevens), which I beleved are oppressed race of Giadian Empire(Britannian Empire) away from battlefield. Similar mc name Lena(Leila). There's Spider-like robots. Is this a rip-off or just influenced work. Tell me more if you can find more similarities between the 2 series.

Anyway visuals are fuckin good, holy shut that sunset, CG fights we're better as expected.

I am bit bothered by CGI to be honest. Moreso that in something llke Attack on Titan.

Slice-of-life parts of the episode were animated fantastically, but this is kinda a military porn show so I fear having to look at this style of animation during action sequences will go old real fast.

OK, still pretty desperate move to make her look cool and politically correct early on...which also contradicts with her killing a lot of those guys in her missions. If she is supposed to be so empathic - why not quit military and do something by political means to save them?
Yes, this would mean less action and way more grinding against the machine, loosing privileges and eventually going to jail...

No matter how you slice it, her character here come as nonsensical.

PS
To sum it up:

AlShu: The Emperor has no clothes.
GoldenDevilGamer: But...but there is an explanation.

Lena is only 16 years old, which stands to reason that she mostly likely doesn't have much political experience because of her age. From my perspective, it would be reasonable to work in the military and take on a role that will allow her to communicate and apply her combat analysis skills. If she does want to pursue politics in the future, she could pivot with her military experience since I am assuming that people who served in the military are look more favorably on when it comes to elections.

If anything, it is that she is smart. She is taking on a back-end role that allows her to assist the processors without having to deal with unwanted public attention that comes with being a politician.

Yes, this would mean less action and way more grinding against the machine, loosing privileges and eventually going to jail...

Well... jeez. Wouldn't it be sensical to make an effort to avoid losing privileges and going to jail?

Code Geass is part a revenge story part a tale about the tyranny and the price of revolution. 86 has none of these aspects, it’s a military sci-fantasy show with a bit of racial oppression backdrop at the start oft he story.

Great episode. The setting of this world and the premise look very intriguing and left me wanting to see more. This has a huge potential I hope they don't mess it up.

Still early to comment on the characters or where the actual plot will go in, but everything so far looks interesting.

this has been on a list for a while now since i heard good things at least of the opening Vol only read a small bit of it,

it was alright quite a few terms drop from all the exposition that aren't that hard to piece together but weren't really explained that much

it has almost the same plot of Valkyria Chronicles III just with racism as the main focus and less cool tanks ...for real i thought their were mechs in this but instead it's these lame ass spiderbots they don't look that bad CGI wise but eh not a fan of their designs at all.

has promise expectations are still at a low will be looking forward to that sawano drop though

Yet another impossible dystopia.

When you can't think up content, use the food scene as a crutch. Twice. Throw in a kitty for good measure.

Wonder if we'll ever be told why they don't simply kill these kids with non-blue hair and use robots or remote pilots instead.

Either way, a lot of bad ideas clumsily handled.

Bruh, it's just the first episode calm down. I kinda agree with you that having a cute food scene right out the gate is a bit jarring, especially considering the militaristic tone the worldbuilding is setting up, but I don't see how anyone could have a legitimate issue with a cat. It humanizes the people around it. Cheap fallback, sure, but are they supposed to act like emotionless robots instead?

Just wait an see where it goes, I think it has at least some promise.

Why does everyone in San Magnolia have white hair? Sign of high devotion to The Republic, maybe?

Okay start I guess. Nothing particularly remarkable to mention yet. Not even Sawano's OST which is a surprise. Anyways, hope Vladilena can become emotionally stronger as the story progresses.

By the way, this show indeed gives off some Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans vibes.
