They get us to fall in love with the main character and then make us watch him get beat up every episode? AHHH IT'S TOO MUCH...

I think that Joe will lose this one badly, but he will get some recognition. Perhaps a sponsor will come up and equip Joe with some gear. Nanbu will find a way to arrange some fights that will still give Joe a chance to enter Megalonia, but Aragaki will fight his way up as well and they will meet again in the last match before Megalonia or maybe even during that tournament. Joe will win, Aragaki will make peace with the past and forgive Nanbu, and that character arc will be closed. That's my prediction.

He can. They show Joe only for first 3 seconds, after that we saw only Nambu and Aragaki.

Quite a cliffhanger.

Aragaki definitely has some significant emotional baggage. It was an insidious trap, the one that stole nearly everything from him. I wonder, how will Aragaki manage to overcome his regrets? Destroying his opponent(s) cannot possibly be the solution.

Above all, however, I am looking forward to finding out how will Joe escape his predicament.

I suppose I am the only one who caught the animation mistake in this episode. The eyepatch is supposed to be on Nanbu's right eye, but in the scene where Aragaki remembers the past the patch is shown on Nanbu's left eye.

That was one really gripping intro, and the frequent trigged flashbacks could give us an idea on how the fight ends.

Well ye the fact the count didn't go up to ten means there's hope in the next episode. Plus I don't believe Joe will ever lose a battle considering this anime's length and the fact that he's gotta take Yuri later on.

This episode was so dark and Aragaki reminds me of Kim from Ashita no Joe.

GG no re -_-

JK aside, this episode ended when the referee counted 8 so we all know Joe is gonna stand up and beat the crap out of this sentimental geezer in the next episode. Predictable, yet engaging with powerful dialogues and shot despite the "outdated" animation style.

I guess it's the time for a super intense fight next episode, aside that the backstory of the characters and the dialogues are on point. Only i need a little more of the action part.

Insane storytelling backed with an incredible soundtrack. They didn't hold back on the mature themes of suicide, depression etc. This series is legit.

Only thing I missed was a proper explanation as to why Nanbu ditched Aragaki.

That didn't really cut it for me. It was suggested that Aragaki's disappearance would was "convenient" for Nanbu which sounds ambiguous - was it involved with his connections to the mafia/debt, did he at the time discover Joe? Am I overthinking things? probably.

You got it all wrong. It's quite the opposite. The scene where Nabu sees the death announcement of Aragaki clearly shows Nabu is frustrated and annoyed at that fact, not because he cared for Aragaki but because he lost his meal ticket. And probably after that he started drinking excessively and made some big debts, and then he met Joe, who provided him with meal tickets again, albeit not as big as Aragaki's.

It was made pretty clear what happened. Nanbu basically thought he was dead after seeing that on the tv, and he was so devastated that his method of grieving meant that he wanted to forget everything about Aragaki, so he didn't even try to find him find him or anything.

Anyway, on topic, great episode, Aragaki reminded me of that military guy from Joe, and pretty good focus on Nanbu too.

One of the best episodes in the series, and I'm glad that instead of focusing on Joe or boxing, they take some time to develop and explore the past of Nanbu, because to be honest, everyone feels like a secondary character.

Did not expect that we would have a Kim like character for this series, I like the hole development for Nanbu and like where things going with Arageki. Dang that cliffhanger is going to hard to wait through, hopeful JD can pull out a win some how, but it be hard though. Also I like the whole thing going with Arageki that relays on parts to do everything as he relays much disable it offer something very interesting.

An intense fight between Nanbu's students. Nanbu lost his cool, he's not now believing Joe can win a match, particularly this match, not anymore even by lying, as said by Joe. Nanbu should wake up and move on his past, Joe needs his coaching and motivation. Can't wait to see what will happen to this match.

Funny side note when they were showing the flash back for Gansaku's old boxer we really thought he was the one who blew dude up when he appeared from under the blanker LOL

By "we" I suppose you mean "only yourself". It was pretty obvious Nanbu couldn't be possibly there , not to mention he would die as well.

no literally me and my friend were like "WHAT HUH?" for like a couple minutes and after that I said pretty much what you said "there is literally no way he was there" it was just a shock of the moment thing, it was funny.

Good episode. Next episode we will be halfway to the series. Either 1 more fight or It's straight to Megalonia. 1 more episode of Joe training, 2 episode at the one guy at Megalonia and 1 surprise fight for Joe experience and last two will be fight with Yuri.

Unless there will be a second season. Furthermore, the show is 13 episodes, not 12, so the next episode is not exactly the halfway.

What's the middle number between 1 to 13?, it is technically halfway. I listed 7 episode in my prediction anyway.

A real solid episode that did a great job of building the tension for the fight between Joe and Aragaki, and holy shit were some of those scenes of Aragaki in/after the war pretty brutal

Also fuck that ending, can't wait until the next episode!!!

I personally believe that's the best course that the series can take. I mean it would feel cheap for Joe to get back up and still beat Aragaki, when this could remind Joe the difference between high-ranking boxers with amazing gear, and would hopefully get him some gear of his own. Them rematching each other during the tournament would be epic. Especially with Joe rematching Yuri, and we can find if Yuri is genetically engineered or possibly a cyborg.

Nanbu saw maybe his best friend listed as KIA, but never went to check on what happened? I guess he didn’t want to accept it and that started his drinking and other bad habits that lead him to the bad spot he’s in now :/

Joe will probably have to draw this out to take advantage of Aragaki’s lack of stamina, but he’s not making it easy for Joe right now haha.

Show has definitely improved. I thought the first two episodes were pretty average, didn't really draw me in, but the show has gotten better, especially with introducing Aragaki. A very interesting background to him that makes him such a legit character. He's not just some spurned former student, which could've just been a pretty standard trope if done kinda any other way as you really feel for him. He clearly has some irredeemable aspects, but he's also sympathetic at the same time, so it creates for a great dynamic.
