Another awesome action scene, giant barrier fist punch!

Also, LOL at the pinpoint barrier operated by more females who belong more on a school playground than in a battleship. This show cracks me up.

What the heck was with Minmay, she was just too overjoyed by Hikaru going to his first battle.
Misa's Daedalus Attack was insane~

Minmay is so annoyingly naive in this episode! >_<

I laughed my ass off too! "Oh, no! I'll never make it!", "No, don't attack from the side! Shoot from the front!" , "No, don't shoot there!" How much hilarity can you get? LOL They were pretty good at using the track ball though...I think. XD

Yeah, it sure is strange how the ship seems to be operated by teenage girls. Except for Misa and her friend anyway. Minmay still strikes me as odd, though at least I'm not the only one to think that.

The action scene was pretty cool... I loved how they showed the mother ship buckling and straining. It might be old, but it shows that they really thought about the art at the time. It was really well done.

Minmay bothers me a lot. She has had a lot of quick mood swings so far.

Minmay was quite annoying with her shopping antics this episode ... but OMG that punch was fucking awesome! Surrounding that huge robot fist in the pinpoint barrier and using it to deploy troops into the ship ... badass as hell!

When I realized they were about to do a punch, I thought "Oh geez, give me a break..." But then, they opened the fist and inside were all those troops with missles, it went from silly to badass in a split second!

Captain Global is the best supporting character in this.

Doing a rewatch of Macross after many years. This episode is just an example of how good it is despite the fact that it's over 30 friggin years old. The attention to the designs, the storyline is amazing. You can tell that it was made by people who really loved sci-fi and wanted to create something special.

...Shopping? There? Oh, well, who cares.
Also, I was sure you can't go from Pluto to Saturn in two months.
So, Minmei wants her boyfriend to be a top gun. That girl is not so simple.
Girls from the bridge and barrier squad make me laugh, but Misa "oba-san" is actualy useful and saves they day for her captain once again. One is lucky to have a first officer like that. The punch was epic.

I was not expecting this to be the kind of show where a giant spaceship transforms into a giant robot and then punches another spaceship!

For 1982, this is some visionary shit!!!!

Again, some good reasons why Macross is regarded as such an important work in anime history. Track balls to target the pinpoint defense....reminds me of Space Invaders and Missile Command...

There does seem to be something a little off about Minmay's treatment of Hikaru. He's on his way to his first battle and may well not come back and that's the sendoff you give your boyfriend? (But the whole shopping date and other interactions seem to give off boyfriend/girlfriend vibes, particularly when the family gathers around him at the table.)

Two other interesting notes: Hikaru seems to be feeling the conflict of a reluctant soldier. It's always easier to pull the trigger when you don't realize that it's a human being that you're pulling it on, and it doesn't matter if that human is five times your size, the reaction of fear really did convey that these aren't just robots or incomprehensible aliens that are the "enemies". Also good to note that the female characters actually do important stuff in this series. Not only are they the core executive staff on the bridge, but they're also responsible for the ECM and pinpoint defense systems. There still seems to be a little bit of gender division of combat roles (all the mech pilots, the ground soldiers, and engineering staff appear to be male), but this isn't bad for the early 80's.

Next episode we get Misa's back story.

Not really a big fan of Minmay, she just seems so unstable. She was being so...positive? talking to Hikaru at the fountain. Could that be her running away from her problems by not considering the fact that Hikaru could very well die? Or that she is just that naive.

The battle this episode was so good. Really wasn't expecting the mechs to fire from within the "arm" of the ship.

Lieutenant Hayase best girl. She definitely don't look like an old woman. Dudes must be blind.

Also lmfao @ them rebuilding the entire city in two months (actually less than that - two months is just how long they've been gone from Earth?) Did they just pick up some supplies on Neptune? Also lets ignore that they're using precious water for park fountains.

God, this series legit cracks me up. The pinpoint barrier system is fucking hilarious as well.

Lieutenant Hayase is a Queen and the lessors can stay hating on her. Meanwhile she punched out that enemy ship like Mike Tyson. Fuckin champ.

Agreed with all of this; aside from the comedy and the action it's a big part of why I like the show so much. Hikaru is portrayed as compassionate and human in the face of potential violence, rather than gung-ho to pull the trigger like so many other leading men.

I too noticed that basically the entire crew of the ship are women, which is pretty cool. The gender divide is pretty noticeable as well, but like you said, for the early 80's, just to have this many well-developed female characters who are actually relevant to the plot is a pleasant surprise.

Took a while for me to "get" it but I think I'm falling in love with this show.

The pinpoint barrier system had me staring at the screen in disbelief. Must have replayed it at least five times while I processed what was happening.

Hikaru could have at least cleared up the misunderstanding at the lingerie store. Minmei is a little too carefree.

An aircraft-carrier turned into a brass knuckle for a giant robot?! Nice idea, "obasan".
Also, I think the adorable Minmay has already been depicted as a carefree teenager enough for the audience to not be disturbed by her reaction toward the war. (of course, it's nice the show adresses it through Hikaru)

4/5

I only watched the Robotech americanization long ago (mostly forgot about it) and I have yet to understand why people judge both heroes badly.
@CodeBlazeFate Any reason for the above?

Not sure either. I don't remember many people insulting Hikaru/Eick, just Minmei.

Yeah, that whole transformation and punching scene was awesome. You can bet that the franchise makes reference of it at least once.

Damn, that was one badass attack Oba-san came up with. Those barrier girls, though lol. They even made it sound quite lewd at times.

And those citizens haven't seem to have learned their lesson. Stop building houses inside a transforming spaceship! Then again, they do need something to do occupy their time during the months it's going to take for them to reach earth.

Those barriers really seem like something computer should control. Deadalus attack was epic tho, bold plan.

They are already at Mars in the next episode? They are traveling quite fast, I thought that almost whole series will be them traveling back to Earth but I guess no. Probably they will get Space folded or something again.

The amount of Minmay's outfits in just 6 episodes is pretty fascinating. I genuinely enjoyed Hikaru "Mr. Lingerie" Ichijou in the shop xD

I just realized that Macross has 2 aircraft carriers attahed to it xD What about ARMD-I and ARMD-II? They're destroyed, right? Or are they attached too?

Looks like Hayase's quirk is being called "obaasan" xD

The ED features a photo that Hikaru and Minmay took together :3

The way that "Pinpoint Barrier" was operated by the girls was really funny and inventive. I'm so much enjoying the show and its original concepts, even if they're a bit ridiculous sometimes.
