Around 5 minutes stating the show's premise and the rest of the episode was simply MC doing parkour... and despite that, I still felt bored to death.
And seriously, what in hell did Axel do to receive such absurd amount of years in prison???

So-so start overall. OST is nice tho.

Solid first episode to hook in the viewer with the art, animation, and action, but the set up for the premise already seems a bit iffy thus far. Plot holes/convenience showing up quite a lot only 1 episode in too. Nothing on the guys legs when he has escaped multiple times? To say nothing about the parkour and general incompetence of most of the people going after him.

My biggest concern is that this show is setting itself up as a plot focused series instead of a character focused series. That's a major red flag for me because as much as I love other shows Watanabe has done like Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo, those were character driven shows where the overarching plot barely mattered. All of his other shows used Macguffins, if that, to drive the plot while focusing on the characters themselves and that's what made those great series to watch. With a plot driven show it requires better writing and storytelling to ensure the show doesn't fall apart around a poor plot. Given the lack of previously established success under that model my expectations for the show going forward may have to decrease significantly. You can't just pretend that most or all of the population on the planet dying within 30 days is irrelevant as you watch the characters and their relationships develop like you can with say "finding the samurai that smells of sunflowers". Hopefully my concerns are unfounded, but there are already enough issues after only 1 episode that leave me feeling doubtful that things will improve going forward...

Perhaps forcing Watanabe to make a "serious" series instead of whatever he wanted was a mistake...

It has a Cowboy Bebop vibe all over it, but the characters remind me more of Samurai Champloo, which makes sense considering it shares a director. The animation, the soundtrack... everything drew me in right away.

I'm still not 100% sure if literally everyone has consumed Hapuna or just the majority, but either way, it's a fascinating setup. A really gripping first episode.

I'm hesitant to trust any anime WBD puts their name on, but now that they're producing a new series from Shinichiro Watanabe, I'm cautiously optimistic. Historically it just seems like their goal is to exploit the anime industry into making shows targeted for an exclusively American audience, giving them an authentic Japanese production rather than the sort of domestically-produced copycats you'd find on Netflix (a la the recent Devil May Cry). This typically results in western IP drivel like Rick and Morty: The Anime and War of the Rohirrim (which I thought was pretty solid, but clearly I'm in the minority on that), or new anime that would largely appeal to their own audience, like the various uninspired FLCL sequels, and the less said about Uzumaki, the better. But it was inevitable that they'd back a new Watanabe project eventually, since the Cowboy Bebop dub was one of the earliest big hits on Adult Swim's lineup, and they're clearly desperate to replicate that success. It's hard to tell at this point to what degree they just gave Watanabe free reign to make the next show he wanted to make, or how much they were breathing down his neck coercing him into just making Bebop again, but as far as this first episode goes, it's looking pretty good so far.

It is kinda funny how this is Adult Swim's second show this year about a dangerous miracle drug (two nickels, yada yada), but the two shows are so different that they can really coexist without much issue. This one is less about the drug itself and more about the race against time to prevent the drug from killing everyone on Earth. A convict is offered the chance to help pursue the inventor of the drug, only to escape from prison and get chased down by the group, who end up capturing and recruiting him anyway. It's not entirely clear why they didn't just explain themselves a bit further and offer him his freedom or something, but the ensuing chase, which takes up the bulk of the episode, is still a pretty engaging watch. As Adult Swim has tended to do with a few projects, they bring on a big Hollywood name to work on the anime itself, and here we have John Wick series director Chad Stahelski choreographing the action, mostly parkour with a bit of hand-to-hand combat so far, but it's a real treat. Especially with MAPPA animating this time around, it looks good of course but it does feel a bit more streamlined this time around, lacking the rougher visual touches that made the visuals of Cowboy Bebop or Samurai Champloo stand out more. Plus there are a few cuts where the characters don't mesh well with the moving CG backgrounds, but that's to be expected at a point, I suppose. Finally, I'm sure they'll get fleshed out more as the series progresses but the cast didn't leave as strong of a first impression as I had hoped. Going back to his previous shows, Bebop only introduced Spike and Jet in the first episode before waiting to introduce Ein, Faye, and Edward later on, and Champloo only had three main characters throughout its entire run, so introducing them all at once was no issue. Here, they try to introduce seven or eight key characters in one episode, and none of them have really had the chance to stand out yet. And with only 13 episodes at their disposal, that might be difficult to pull off.

I was planning on watching this subbed, especially with a cast that stacked, but apparently the sub won't be out for another month, so the dub will have to do. They brought in Sentai for this one, so already it's a step down from previous dubs. The cast is fine enough, but when you're in the shadow of one of the definitive English dubs of the last thirty years, fine enough can't help but feel a little disappointing. I'm sure I'll warm up to this cast, I have before with previous dubs some of these actors have been in, but like the show itself, it's hard to believe the best is yet to come before the best actually comes.

Looks very promising, but I have plenty of pet peeves.

I dig a lot the cyberpunk aesthetics, ironically the city landscape looks more similar to the Cyberpunk videogame than the actual anime adaptation of it. Really snazzy and cool jazz tunes and upbeat ones. Really clean animation and pretty good use of 3D animation to make animated backgrounds look like they are 3D.

Writting wise, I have to suspend my disbelief on plenty of points... to an extent. Feels weird that multiple countries that should had tested on infinite trials for Skinner's drug didn't find long term side effects that now have become a death sentence to all mankind. Given our modern times that are probably more chaotic than fictional settings with a clown like RFK jr claiming that cod liver can keep you safe from measles. So I could believe if Skinner had plenty of goons like RFK Jr had wave plenty of safety protocols to allow the drug to be used world wide.

My other big pet peeve was that, if Hersch team were trying to catch Axel in order to make make him part of the Lazarus squad, why did they hunt him like a prisoner? Axel just wanted to be out of prison and Hersch had already given him an offer, I don't see why he would play hard to get.

Last, I'm not too hot about Megumi Hayashibara voicing an elder character while doing exactly the same pitch and tone of Faye Valentine.

Even though Watanabe's last work Carole & Tuesday was a flop after the second part, I still have some faith in him, and hope this show can vindicate his name.

Ewww... Having to listen to the dub. Anyway, I liked it, but I'm kind of skeptical it will be good in the long run just because I really disliked the world it takes place in. Felt kind of drab in that first episode. Liked what we got from the characters though. Feels like a fun group.

I also disliked how inconsistent Axel was in being cautious while running. One moment he's measuring distances with his hands and pausing to determine if he can complete a jump safely, and at other moments he's sprinting through windows and holes on the sides of buildings at full speed not knowing if there's a massive drop on the other side or if there's something he can safely land on.

An all right first episode.

The music and animation are obviously the best part so far. There was a small bit of jank on some of the wider shots, but that's only if I'm being nit-picky.

Fine enough premise. Catch the guy to save the world. It works even if they don't end up doing anything crazy with it.

The dialogue felt weird to me. The voice actors were all very flat and unnatural in their deliveries. The conversation with the street officer, Hersch's converasation with Abel in the office, and Eleina's line at around 16:20, "Ok. I'm working on it now," all stick out as the worst offenders.

Opening is ight.

this show fucks. Axel is jumping around like he's on low gravity. The animation is so kinetic. I love how theres so many POV shots of him running all over the place. I like how the parkour allows you to also get a better sense of the atmosphere of what the setting is like in this city. I like the premise we have ticking clocks lots of good mysteries and some good stakes at play so now we need to see why this is happening and what it all means. I was sorta wondering what the premise actually was going to be about from a glance but this makes it more interesting. I enjoyed this opening episode and am really looking forward to where this goes next.

Although I found the character designs and personalities to be somewhat lacking, I have to admit I'm a huge fan of the high octane action this episode, complete with parkour, exciting/smooth sakuga, and fun combat to boot, presented with a solid mystery introduced. How is Axel involved with the mystery guy? Not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if it's all a bluff. All that aside, solid first episode and that soundtrack? Killer

i got to say this brings me a lot of cowboy beebob nostalgia , from the music to the environment of the anime, i am assuming that lazarus is also in the Beebop universe but much earlier, and it would make sense .

Also the part where axel jumps of the building to catch the drone is an easter egg to spike when he falls to the ground and you see all the birds flying , and glowing.

Not sure what the whole point of this episode was, parkour montage? The initial premise was dumb, the EN Dub is pretty bad. I don't usually reply to episodes, but this was the only "anime" I thought I would get to watch this Season with how dry it is and I couldn't had been more let down.

Great first episode, set up the premise, broadly and added in the sakuga action with a ton of parkour to cool Saxaphone Jazz music. Very Watanabe, with the doves being a nod to John Woo. Style points 10/10.

Will wait to see if there's character development since we don't know what MC ended up in jail for ... or how the team was assembled.

Everything else is cool though, especially the bike!

I wasn't expecting to see Adult Swim on this, especially since I didn't dive into anything other than the synopsis but I hope it doesn't end up like Ninja Kamui.

Don't get me wrong, Ninja Kamui was awesome... at the beginning and then it fell off completely. I pray that Lazarus is a success, and as first impressions go, I like it a lot.

The first episode was one of the mostunique first episodes i have ever seen, the combo of cowboybebops creator and direcotr of the John wick franchise is S tier, it had the best chase seen i have ever seen in an anime. Also, what i noticed was the really diffrent kind of animation, i like it but i can definetely see why people may not like it. Its a solid 7.6 out of 10

So let's see, another shaggy-haired MC who is good at fighting and joins a quirky group, yeah, checks out for Shinichirou Watanabe. Dr. Skinner's motivations are your usual "humanity bad." As I'm a fan of the mad scientist character trope, I will probably like him, but I do hope he will get some more depth. For now, I'll keep my expectations low, treating this a shallow action anime with good animation.

P.S. Nice to see the Uchida siblings voice what I assume are sibling characters. I can definitely imagine the fun they had voicing them.

That was a bland, kinda bad first episode.

Putting aside the Cowboy Bebop-nostalgia (the hero almost looks like Spike, too, sigh), his jumping ability is so comically over-the-top that it felt out of place with how grounded the rest of the show was depicted. I was hoping for a reveal like "he's a robot" or "he's a cyborg" or "he's a mutant", but nothing. Jumping from more than 10m height, no stamina loss, just almost flying around everyone. It makes his escape less impressive when the laws of physics simply don't count for this guy, as if you're watching One Punch Man, except this isn't supposed to be a parody anime.

I'll keep watching, but this is massively overhyped so far.
If you haven't watched "Fantastic Children", don't talk about "best anime". Thank you.

I hope I'm wrong about this, but I really thought they dropped the ball on this episode. For some reason I just wasn't impressed with he animation (probably because I saw MAPPA was animating it). I felt like it was super basic and even the sakuga/action scenes didn't compare to Cowboy Bebop, which came out decades ago. Also, the English dub was terrible so I'll probably be watching in Spanish (unless they release the Japanese audio). The story was very intriguing though, and I'm very curious to know where they will go with this concept. I want to love this anime so bad and I hope it grows on me because I love Watanabe, so I'm hoping for the best.

Well, it certainly has the feel of Cowboy Bebop. Instead of a guy who likes martial arts we have a younger version of Spike who is a parkour genius. The premise is morbid, and yet we get a chill soundtrack. First episode is not outstanding, but it does set the mood of the anime. This should pick up more in the coming episodes. Worth sticking around for a bit.

Ever since this was announced, I was waiting to watch it

This was a GREAT introduction to the show. A drug taking over the world and the creator of it coming back to announce mankind's end due to it.

The characters all look like they'll be a lot of fun to learn more about in future episodes. Animation (as per MAPPA usual) is stellar.

A lot of potential here.

The way of presenting the characters is a little forced through the problem they have so globally greater, no character has been captivating or interesting, the villain's pseudo is much more interesting have his goals better developed than any other character making us cheer for him early on, creating real expectations in all viewers so that he is the real outcome with the final outcome. weak, hyper potential lost, pity. We are one episode in and the hate this is receiving is nuts. It's 22 minutes or so where they have to introduce to us the plot of the series and the main characters. There are 13 episodes in total, what did you expect from them in one episode? Who didn't expect them to showcase a long action sequence in a sci-fi action thriller? And people saying the story is mid only knowing what the overarching plot is do not know what they are even talking about. We haven't even seen the story yet.

Of course the animation is fantastic but I was super bummed out to see that there was no Japanese dub available. The English dub is not great.

I like it:) it wasn’t crazy action packed like other recent first episode Originals like I’ve seen but it overall it’s catchy, likeable, engaging (Axels scenes obviously).
Only thing that I thought was average was voice acting. Sentai did the dubbing and I’m not sure how experienced actors they have or how big there connections are but you can tell the difference between this and some of the top VAs and anime/animated tv shows out at the moment.
(Sidetracked but I loved how it feels like Watanabe and Mappa brought cowboy bebop and banana fish back to life with this one)

I can say that most of MAPPA's original anime have terrible scripts! The first episode has beautiful visuals and smooth animation, but... a drug that leads to the end of the world, and the solution is just finding the creator? Then a whole episode of the main character running around the city showing off his 'peak' skills, only to get caught by a pretty dumb trick? He gets sentenced to 888 years in prison, escapes from both prison and a high-tech pursuit team, only to fall for that trap? I really can't bring myself to look forward to the next episodes. We'll probably just get more visually stunning action scenes—and that's it!!
@jennythanh you have a point. Yet Mappa is just the animation studio. But it’s funny how you wrote it out like this bc it sounds just like the plot of MAPPAs Hells Paradise: Shinobi killer sentenced to death after being caught (spoiler: he could easily escape if he wanted) a strong execution it’s comes to kill him. Before he’s killed, the execution then offered a chance to live if he finds a miracle elixir of life 😭

Wowwww, this was way cooler than what I was expecting.

First things first, I wasn't expecting the english dub. It makes sense since the anime is clearly inspired by the West, but it's weird watching an anime with English dub, since I usually watch anime with the original Japanese voice actors, subbed.
Anyways, the voice acting was ok, although that older Lady from the beginning really seems like an AI talking, like, I can't unhear the AI now.

The setting for this anime is quite unique: a doctor that creates a drug that is really good, because it makes people not feel any pain or have any disease, but in reality, it was all a plan for him to extinguish the human race, as people who have taken the drug will die within 3 years. All of this because this Doctor believes the human race has commited enough crimes against Nature, and has to pay for its sins now.
This is honestly quite understandable, but I wonder if the Doctor also took that pill...

The Main Character is Axel, that, so far, as captivated my interest, it seems it's going to be quite a fun character. Also, he's 23, an anime main character that is an adult (particularly being older than 20) is always something to celebrate. He's quite agile, and I don't know why he was in prison, besides having escaped many times from prison (I mean, he had to be there once without that accusation), but I'm sure we'll get that info soon.
We also got introduced to the other characters, that are a group called "Lazarus" (role the credits"), and we don't know their motivations, but I'm sure we'll get to know them really soon.

But it seems Lazarus are after that said Doctor, for him to give them the cure for that drug. And they needed Axel's help, because, well, we all saw how good he was.

Obviously, the big standout of this episode were all the action scenes. They were incredible, and it was so cool seeing such Parkour skills. I'm sure they will maintain this level of quality for the next episodes, so I'm seeing that this anime will be a fest to our eyes! The artstyle is also very fitting for a futuristic anime, that draws inspiration by older anime like Cowboy Bebop.

Despite everyone wanting to capture him, Axel didn't kill anyone, which might indicate that he is indeed a good boy, only with an attitude.

I'm really curious to see how this anime will develop its story, but I feel like this anime has a lot of potential! It will certainly be one of the standouts of this year in terms of anime. Can't wait for next week to see how Axel will adapt by being forced into the group Lazarus!

I feel like I made a good choice by choosing this anime to watch for this Spring Season!

Edit: The ending song was good! It certainly fits the vibe they are going for with this anime!
2nd Edit: Just discovered the ending song is actually from 1993, that's crazy! But it does fit the vibe of the anime!
@PokefanPT no Fr I can’t not believe that the two old people talking were just part of the staff asked to read lines. It was not good 😭
