I believe in Japan girls often cut their hair short as form of character growth or change. Maybe it has something to do with that.

Asian girls in general equates "cutting hair" to "character development", "moving on", "change of mindset" or "living my life in a different direction".

when a girl got "heartbroken" - they often cut their hair.
when a girl wanna show change - they cut their hair.
when a girl losts someone she love - they cut their hair.

i do not say - its always the norm but its often the derivations of people towards these behavior.

"Cutting hair" is a symbolism of change for asians most of the time I say.

See whats the common denominator with all these women in Monogatari? They all went thru "changes in life and moving on"

It has been a trope in fiction for an extremely long time in all cultures that the cutting of hair symbolizes a character’s growth and/or an increased resolve. This happens in books, movies, anime, tv shows, lots of media from all over the world. There is usually a symbolic self-haircutting scene a-la Sakura’s dramatic cutting of her long hair in Naruto, but sometimes it’s offscreened. And it’s not exclusive to female characters either, for example Toriyama showed Gohan’s growth in the Cell arc by having Goku cut his hair shorter when he grew to exceed his limits, and his hair stayed short thereafter.

Something similar to men shaving after getting rejected.

But it's more about development. Didn't need that as symbolism tho. Definitely not with all the girls.

I think it’s something people do in any culture to show change. Like starting fresh with a new look by changing your hair color or cutting your hair.

This also happens in Nisioin’s other works like Katanagatari where Togame midway also cuts her hair short.

@thischeetobussin Togame herself didn't cut her hair... it was the sister...

Both Hitagi and Hankeawa have explicitly stated it's to symbolyze a change in their lives for the better a few seasons ago.

Because Nisio Isin has deplorable taste. 95% of the time an anime girl gets a haircut, it looks like shit.

@Anienjoyer It is certainly a thing here in SEA and East Asia. Not very apparent as I said - it just that some people will ask a woman if they have broken up upon seeing her with short hair. People always assumes something like that when they saw a women suddenly cutting their hair.

as many people said: to mark a change; a clear visual distinction from before and now. also, *kawaii desu*. going from short to long is gradual so this distinction is not possible without maybe a wig or hair extensions :P

@rohan121 the lack of fanservice is because Koyomi is no longer the protagonist.
In all Monogatari the stories are told by their protagonist, so they change direction depending of the protagonist. Story arcs where Koyomi is not the protagonist like Hitagi End tend to have less fanservice since all the fanservice comes in first place from Koyomi's dirty head.

Like how Hanekawa boobs go from really big to normal size in the movie and the times when he is attracted to her until he gets a girlfriend and no longer sees her so much as a sexual being is my fav example of this.

It's a common storytelling trope in anime to show cutting of long hair meaning coming of age for young girls.
