Author Yu Okano's Nozomanu Fushi no Boukensha a.k.a The Unwanted Undead Adventurer, it definitely has the Dungeon & Dragons feeling to it.

JUVENILE's OP is decent enough, just the way I like it. Mao Abe's ED has the Frieren ED's feeling of nostalgia, it's just so good.

For the typical adventurer Rentt Faina, his MO of working solo for more than 10 years in Maalt, and living off the fruits of his labour being the lowest of his Bronze class, waking up early and taking the good jobs of the day...only to meet his fate in the Labyrinth of the Moon's Reflection dungeon. As if finding a secret passageway that would change his life, he doesn't know that it encapsulates a dragon, and its presence alone causes Rentt to freeze in his steps. However, after being eaten alive, Rentt becomes an undead skeleton, and can't quite do the things that humans do.

Trying to figure out what can he do as an undead, he can still utilize his spirit energy and mana, and defeat monsters the same...with a peculiar subject of existential evolution, for skeletons to become ghouls. And that's Rentt's goal as he traverses to make a living in the dungeon with his divinity power. His 10 years to become a mithril-class adventurer, that was his goal being a human, but even as an undead, that will not stop him as he gets stronger, absorbing enough spirit energy to evolve iinto a ghoul...with speech problems so much he has to practice that first.

The newbie female adventurer that guild secretary Sheila was tasked to assign her to Rentt, but seemingly pressed for money and heading to the same dungeon...will she find him there?

Rentt's journey as an undead has just begun...but achieving existential evolution is no cakewalk in the dark park.

Most of the episode is filled with the main character talking alone, and honestly, I can't find any charm in telling the story that way....

For the past decade, Rentt Faina has made a living hunting monsters, though his skills leave much to be desired, often relegating him to the mundane task of dealing with slimes and goblins for meager coins. However, a stroke of luck changes his fate when he stumbles upon an unexplored path that leads him to a legendary dragon. Swiftly, the mighty creature swallows him whole.

Upon awakening a short while later, Rentt finds himself in a peculiar state—not quite dead, yet far from alive. He exists as nothing more than a pile of bones. Armed with only his trusty sword, dependable tool belt, and a spectral visage, Rentt sets out on a new quest. As a reanimated skeleton, his aim is to undergo Existential Evolution and ultimately regain a more human-like form, all while harboring the hope of one day returning to civilization.

Rentt just can't seem to resist chiming in on every little thing, even during a scene where he's awkwardly facing off with another skeleton, both barely holding themselves together. It's so uneventful that it feels like it should be against the law. To make matters worse, the human characters in the show look pretty good, but Rentt's 3DCG skeleton model throughout most of the episode comes off as clunky, making the whole experience even more draining.

The best thing I can say is that the show isn't outright bad, but being boring is arguably worse.

The most perfect character development set up so far.

A slower paced episode fill with essential expositions for the introduction to the power/magic system, the guild & dungeon system and the main character personality.

Very intrigue to see where this series go.

This was great.

The MC was really naive walking wide in the open like that at the start, but after he became a different entity he didn't show any of that naivety.

One of the best shows this season so far.

Seems like your average fantasy anime with undead mc and a not so interesting one at that. This episode felt quite boring as it just followed what the mc did alone powering up and stuff. That true dragon had an interesting design. Interested in that thing atleast. Gonna watch a few more episodes and see. There's some cute girls so maybe I'll like it when we get to them.

Seems like a better version of Skeleton Knight so far. They're actually showing his growth from lowly basic skeleton, and thus far it seems like his condition would actually be a factor (unlike Skeleton Knight where he can just put on a helmet and continue to be a regular generic OP fantasy protagonist without issue). Here's hoping it doesn't devolve into something like that.

i already expect everyone to do those "it's so cliche" comments everywhere lol

anyway, i thought it was a quite decent episode, being an undead sure looks like fun (cough) but the best part was probably the ending when he was trying to talk, i couldn't stop laughing at his konnichiwaaaaaaaaaaaa

oh yeah, damn 10 years training + 10 years adventurer and still bottom rank, damn, that's unlucky

i get it... sure... many of these fantasy manga/LN were started in the mid 2010s, but god damn...

this was the MOST TYPICAL/CLICHE' fantasy anime first episode about some nobody ass dude who suddenly realizes hes far better than he thinks he is by ofc testing his new power on some weak ass monsters/bandits w/e

anwyay, im definitely interested, the undead thing is cool, plus it looks like theres alot more girls in this one than most, including background characters, which will be the best part as always

It's a very strange concept, and similarly to "Yuusha ga Shinda!", it's also very boring. There may or may not be some potential cooking, but we'll see it for sure in a week.

First 5 secs: “I hate this already”
First 20 secs: “oh the music is superb though wow”
First 40 secs: “wow the art is beautiful okie I actually might like this”
First time he’s a skeleton: “ew gross cgi skele, I knew I wouldn’t like this”
First 3 minutes: “alright this might not be too bad maybe I should have added this to my my fantasy anime league”
Final verdict: although I hate cgi, it seems it was only skeleton him? Everything else was great. Blonde lady is beautiful. I wanted to hate but I actually really like

Kinda meh. Unlike other similar stories like Undead King the story does not give you a motive for which he became an undead with self awareness or any reason to suppport MC. Also every flashback is so boring... Iwill give it a bit but seems not ok

Man, I love this one.
I like the chill vibe and that it's ponderous without being overdramatic. Love the grinding and leveling without the RPG stats.

I wouldn't call the dragon a dragon, but whatever; it's a cool, powerful creature - maybe closer to an angel of death?

Definitely on my watchlist.

Loved the first episode of this. Kind of a chill melancholic type of story. Shades of Kumo desu and tensura with the MC levelling up and getting new forms as an undead. The goal for now being to get in good enough shape to return home to town.

Curiosity killed the cat is the theme of this first episode. Poor guy just wanted to pick up some valuables and ended up being lunch for a dragon. Not sure if that’s just how dragons look in this world or if it’s a special type of dragon, but that is a very beautiful yet horrifying design. Given the MC gets spit out as an undead, I’m assuming there is something unique about that particular dragon

Think this is the first skeleton anime I’ve seen where they actually go over the physical disadvantages of being an undead! There’s no way you’d be able to lift a heavy sword easily with no muscles or anything. Seeing Rentt struggle through the initial stages of his transformation and progressively get stronger over the course of the episode was neat. Obviously spedrun the development stage a bit but with a 12 episode run there’s only time for so much of that.

Ghoul level up unlocked ☑️ while not his former self, still better than having no skin in the game. Plus we have a clear path forward with his ultimate goal being to become a vampire which would be near human appearance.

Solid first episode, his friend/magic instructor is hot new adventurer recruit and guild lady are hot so that’s my biggest fantasy requirement met already. Some generic fantasy rpg tropes as per, but the execution seems like it’ll be pretty good here. I’m excited

First episode was always going to be a bit "meh" based in what they had to introduce to make it make sense, but it picks up from here.

You know that I couldn’t miss another show about a skeleton man, they should have called this Deadhead Adventurer instead lol. This was a good first episode, our boy Rentt got eaten by a massive dragon which looked pretty badass and became a spooky skeleton, not a bad way to go but he’s still kicking somehow. And thus began his journey of killing monsters in the same dungeon he died in to become a ghoul which is something he learned from a researcher friend of his, seems kinda Dark Souls like which I’m a fan of, not the first show this season to remind me of Dark Souls funnily enough lol.

And by the end of the episode Rentt finally became a ghoul, still looks kinda bony and spooky but it’s progress lol, it wouldn’t as fun if he immediately looked human again after all. And I gotta say i absolutely love the music choices for this show, the OST so far has been good and that OP absolutely slapped, but the best one was the ED, I think that is gonna be one of my favorite EDs this season, it’s the best one so far for me at least, that’s the good shit right there. Definitely looking forward to more of this, as well as what beautiful babes the boney lad will acquire lol.

Soundtrack sounds good and some of the art style is good setting aside ugliness of CGI skeletons. Only thing making this interesting so far is they seem to be showing actual power growth starting from being weak instead of everything being instant.

Was kind of funny seeing him try to talk.

I like it more than most of the similar unlucky adventurer becomes OP shows. You can see some effort like the art of the dragon. Definitely the cliches are there. I rolled my eyes pretty hard at the spirit, mana, and divinity thing. Oh however could that be useful... But anyway, I liked the atmosphere. Willing to give it a shot before it probably goes terrible.

Personally, I was quite surprised by how good this is shaping up to be.

Really nice art-style and animation so far (although I was sceptical when I saw CGI skeleton) - didn't skip over the "reincarnation" part within 2 seconds like most of these animes would do.

Quite a cool-sounding plot.

Epic adaptation! I need more!
The world building is simply wonderful.
At this rate, it will be another fulfilling series like Frieren.

This is one of the best series out there, for me. 😊

The manga already has plenty of chapters already to have a better view of the story, if you want.

P.S. The OP and ED were great.

What I like about this episode:
> MC has a lot of monologues to create a better perspective from him. Side characters also have them that will definitely help me to get a better understanding of his daily life.
> MC is idealistic and will not stop to attain his dreams and I can see here that he has a pure-hearted desire to do it, even as an undead.
> Epic BGMs, theme songs, and animation.
> MC has a caring personality.
> OP and ED's has a lot of desirable scenes.
CrazyButNot4UJan 6, 3:50 AM
It's not that I dislike this genre but... to add unnecessary fan services to/in/for heroines
and ultimately destroys her character and personality; their purity tarnished because of it,
is the only thing I hope to not happen to them. For that sole purity is my fan service.

I see a lot of complaints but idk I really enjoyed this and liked it a lot, I like how the MC isn’t OP from the start and that his life as an adventurer has been pretty below average since he’s been at it for 10 years which kinda made me feel sad for the guy bc he’s working hard but nothings changing strength wise for him😢 he’s a lil full with barely to no character but hey let’s see how he changes throughout the rest of the show considering he’s becoming an undead with skin now :D

The dragons design looked cool as hell bc that ain’t what a typic dragon looks like, shit looked ominous but cool asf

I want to see more of the girl and the big booby teacher next episode so I can’t wait for them😩
