Late to the party. Can only say that this did a lot better in anime format compared to novel. Look at how he's cringe solidified, every chuunibyou's wet dream, that's true even here and you can't deny it, it's a fact. It works decently as power trip fantasy to consume without thinking much about it, it's even quite funny, the anime is pretty good, the animations really lend itself to making it almost seem a bit cool but mainly just funny because of how overdone it is.
In the novel, we're instead reading through it slowly with way more details and we have the time to properly absorb it and think about what we read. At that point, it becomes unbearable cringe trash, not even worth reading with how badly its written and how overdone and unrealistic the protagonist is given his setting. In the novel, it almost feels like satire or a parody yet it doesn't make itself clear as one and isn't funny or cool on any level unlike here, it's just embarrassing to read after a while once you notice more and more details that further ruin it.
But, I'm happy to say I enjoy the anime. I was always a sucker for overpowered protagonists that aren't little b*tches. Power fantasy trips are great if done right, especially when you enjoy self-inserting. I'd say this is 50% the format and 50% that the animation was done really well in a really good way. Truly few fantasy power trip stories of the japanese variation end up written so well that the novel format is as good or far better than the manga or anime, this isn't one. If it was intentional comedy where the comedy aspect was really heavy with constant clear satire, THEN it might be one of them, but it isn't. |
