Damn, that's why it's a dangerous world out there. It was interesting to see how Koito is treated this episode in such an unpredictable environment.

On the other hand, I like how this show continues to give signifiance to the Ainu culture. Heiji is hilarious tbh.

  • Subtitle groups must face difficulties, since the dialogues have heavy dialect.
  • That eyebrows of Koito's mother clearly passed down to him.

YELP, Lieutenant Otonoshin Koito's backstory sure is one of interest, being the spoiled rich kid of the famed naval captain Heiji Koito.

Often seen as the inferior child in the Koito familyhim being cut down by this adult who was looking for his older brother who since has died, maybe they can become friends in the future. And that adult turned out to be Lieutenant Tsurumi, aiding in the rescue operation of the kidnapping of Koito from Russian forces in a typical corporation takedown supremacy for power in Hakodate.

If they don't act fast, Koito's life will be in danger, so Tsurumi and the Koito family's movements must be discreet but swift. The rescue operation that's located further than what they anticipated Koito's kidnapped towards (Fort Goryokaku), while his father sported a guitar rift, it's Tsurumi who completed the execution. That's how the Tsukisappu anpan is the only thing that Koito remembers from his childhood, and it was how he met Tsurumi and admitted into the 7th Division, where he and Tanigaki will form the love-hate relationship for all his life from then on.

Interesting episode to cover all the missing gaps from within.

For the better or worse Koito's sense of duty is great. Or may just be survivor guilt.

The whole run to Fort Goryokaku was just incredible.
If I was that lady, I would never forget that wink.

Well that explains why Koito is obsessed with Tsurumi, suspension bridge, and that pose.

As always Tsurumi planning and charisma are scary.

Golden Kamuy is the master of short story like this.
Tsurumi before head injury is quite handsome. But the most important thing is that he executed his plan to gain Koito's trust so perfect that Koito might not even get angry if he know the truth. Because sometimes lie is so beautiful that you're willing to die from it rather than facing the truth. And there's no better liar than Tsurumi. I mean his plan is so delicate that he even put that local bread (forget its name) that Koito used to ate two years ago in a kidnapper's basement. A charisma leader can change the world, or set the world on fire.

This. He's an absolutely phenomenal antagonist, with layers upon layers of interesting depth tied to him. And he only gets better too.

Some nice backstory on Tsurumi and Koito. Showing how Koito became so devoted to Tsurumi. Its nice seeing Tsurumi more before his head injury, we did some last season too and it's nice again here. As he was actually a good dude working his way up in the Japanese army. Tsurumi running into a young Koito is a crazy coincidence and just so happening to be the guy who's able to sabe Koito from the kidnappers. There's some suspicion that Tsurumi set the kidnapping up himself so he could earn the trust of the Koito family. The father as he's a high ranking naval general and the son as that would make him loyal to Tsurumi from the jump. Not sure if I buy into that but its an interesting theory that has some merit. Regardless it was cool to see Tsurumi be all wild with his running and chasing down Koito after he ran into him with his bike. Later too when he jumped on the back with the general and was leaning with the curves. More seamless blending of action, suspense and comedy while showing us how a lot of these characters first meet.

I always love a flashback episode of Golden Kamuy, and once again one of these demonstrates just why Tsurumi has been able to garner such a following over the years: he truly is such a charismatic leader and antagonist, even after his brain injury. And it's also plain to see why Koito has such a fondness for him too

Can somebody epxlain how was everything set up? I rewatched some parts but didn't quite get it. I saw that Tsurumi punched Koito Heiji in the back for example. Ogata was dress as a russian and said "Barchonok" while pointing a gun towards Koito's head, but how were there 2 dead russians on the floor while Ogata being dressed as one of them??? Were the russians dead before all of this? I really don't get how everything is set up, but there is enough evidence for me to believe that it is and not enough to understand fully.

I need some explanation ;(

Yup, everything is as you said. And those dead russians were identified by old Koito as some prisoners that disappeared - I'd assume that Tsurumi "acquired" them in some way, then killed and had his people place their bodies there between knocking out old Koito and freeing young Koito.

Loved seeing Koito’s backstory and how he became so fixated on Tsurumi, I think this is one of my favorite episodes so far. It was a pretty intense situation, not only was Koito in danger but a war could have been started by result, Tsurumi really flexed his big brain here, he has all of it still at this point in time lol. I really loved seeing him and Koito’s dad riding the bike together, a badass and comical moment.

I also loved that shot of Tsurumi walking into the room Koito was held captive in lol. And I do believe that was Ogata we saw at the end there, and it hints that Tsurumi orchestrated Koito joining the army, and if so that’s absolutely wild lol.

Tsurumi is a great antagonist but we already saw him create an elaborate plan to recruit soldiers last season. That made this episode predictable, something this show never is. IMO, if they dip in the Tsurumi story well, we gotta have unpredictable stuff or a glimpse of his greater plans.

I'm guessing they are knocking all the ancillary chapters outta the way to go full steam towards the climax. The hot springs episode was casually great. Give us more insanity, the way only Golden Kamuy can. Like the bike chase this episode.

As usual, Golden Kamuy's backstory episodes are a joy to watch. This one was no exception as we got to see how bloody awesome Tsurumi is, with how he got the young Koito to join him in the first place.

Old man Koito had me laughing during the chase scene, where he and Tsurumi crashed into the tram and the old man was still running in the air like the proper chad that he was. His rockstar-like arrival at the old army base only made me laugh even more! XD

I know that we've lack a proper lack of Sugimoto and Asirpa screentime so far, but these types of episodes, giving the other characters some screentime and development as well as telling some of their backstories, are definitely worth it.

Tsurumi back at it again with the plays, Goddamn. Immediately recognized Tsukishima's voice and of course Ogata from those "Russian" kidnappers.

That motorcycle scene with Tsurumi and Otonoshin's dad was gloriously wacky. Gotta love Golden Kamuy being able to sneak in a scene like that in a serious story and nothing would be out of place lmao.

It's so fascinating to see the 7th division members backstory, Tsurumi's always involved too lmao, wait, not even just the 7th division, he's pretty much in everyone's backstory, the madlad. The man is so charismatic that even a leaking skull is not enough to lessen his charisma.

Gonna be really interesting how this plays in in the future with Otonoshin. Really looking forward to the next episode.

The backstory was build in a way that held you tight from the moment koito first met tsurumi because of all the build up from the episodes before.
We knew that Koito always deeply respected Tsurumi and finally we get insides.

It was also very touching to know even tough Koitos father said he wouldn't save him he didn't even bother in any way to build hatred against him but completely trusted his fathers decision and just wanted to fight a last time before it would be over.
His fathers response in form of action just added on top of it.

The reappearance of the anpan Tsurumi gave Koito when they first met felt kinda random but i understand it's there to emphasize the fate being responsible for their reunion like Tsurumi said.

The stares Koito and Ogata gave each other still in the past is theoretically a foreshadowing of the hostility leading up to their fight end of last season but because of the backstory being given a season later and after the fight it felt more like a reminder of their hostility against each other than the foreshadowing.

The episode was reeeaaallly enjoyable.
Never would've thought I'd use the "What did you think of the epsiode" feature by MAL lol

The last 3 episodes felt really slow in contrast to the end of the last season (I rewatched a bit °-°) so i was kiiinda bored but backstory always works xd

While the episode itself was good, I haven't enjoyed the season as a whole as much as I'd hoped so far. The events of the first four episodes have been pretty disjointed, and we've barely seen our main trio. Hopefully things start to feel more connected soon.

The backstory is positioned earlier in the comic - back in the hospital when Ogata calls Koito "Barchonok", it makes Koito recall this story there and then - but the episode breakdown meant they'd have ended the last season on this flashback which would have been dramatically odd for a TV show.

I'm not sure if the suspicious look he throws Ogata at the end of the flashback literally happened, or if it's him now remembering this story with suspicion following Ogata giving away that he was one of the kidnappers.

good episode. I've appreciated enough of the characters to anticipate how they move along the story so the conclusion was as expected. the author is awesome at incorporating the small comedic scenes in the midst of random dramatic ones but can be jarring at times as with this episode.

I'd love to read the source material/manga but the anime adaptation is such a great adaptation that each scene feels so well made and planned for.

If everything Tsurumi has made behind the scenes uravels, it could very well end up with a mix up of potential enemies and allies for everyone like with Otonoshin.
