 Fuji TV announced a new television anime adaptation of Rumiko Takahashi's Urusei Yatsura (Those Obnoxious Aliens) manga on Saturday. The station also opened an official website, revealing the lead cast, staff, a teaser visual (pictured), and teaser promo. The new anime, comprising select episodes from the original series, is scheduled to air on Fuji TV's noitaminA programming block in four cours beginning 2022.Hiroshi Kamiya (Osomatsu-san, Uramichi Oniisan) and Sumire Uesaka (Ijiranaide, Nagatoro-san, Musaigen no Phantom World) are starring as Ataru Moroboshi and Lum, respectively. The new anime commemorates Shogakukan's 100th anniversary. Staff Director: Hideya Takahashi (JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken Part 5: Ougon no Kaze), Yasuhiro Kimura (2.43: Seiin Koukou Danshi Volley-bu) Series Composition: Yuuko Kakihara (Chihayafuru 2) Character Design: Naoyuki Asano (Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na!) Studio: David Production Takahashi serialized the sci-fi romantic comedy manga in Weekly Shounen Sunday from 1978 to 1987 and compiled into 35 volumes. Shogakukan later reprinted the series in 15 wide-ban volumes in 1989–1990, 18 bunkoban volumes in 1998–1999, and 35 shinsoban volumes in 2006–2008. Urusei Yatsura has sold a cumulative 35 million copies of its compiled volumes. Studio Pierrot and Studio Deen co-produced a television anime that aired in 195 episodes from October 1981 to March 1986. The manga also inspired four side story movies between 1983 and 1986, followed by two sequel movies in 1988 and 1991. An 11-episode original video anime ran from 1985 to 1991. AnimEigo licensed the anime series in North America in 1992 and began releasing the television anime on VHS in October that year and later in DVD format in March 2001. The distributor also released five of the six movies on home video in 1993–1994, with Central Park Media releasing the Beautiful Dreamer movie in November 1993. Discotek Media reacquired the Beautiful Dreamer movie in 2018, followed by the remaining five movies last year. VIZ Media licensed the manga in English in 1989 and released seven comic book issues before canceling publication the following year due to poor sales. The publisher reintroduced the manga in its Animerica magazine in 1994 and shipped eight volumes between 1995 and 1999—roughly covering 11 tankoban volumes—and put the series on hiatus in 1998. VIZ Media relicensed the manga in July 2018 and began releasing 2-in-1 omnibus volumes in February 2019. The 12th volume went on sale on November 16, with the 13th volume planned for a February 15, 2022 release. The manga has also been published in multiple foreign languages, including Spanish, Italian, French, and Chinese. Urusei Yatsura won the 26th Shogakukan Manga Award in the Shounen and Shoujo categories in 1980. Synopsis Not much is notable about the lecherous Ataru Moroboshi, but his extraordinary bad luck sticks out like the horns in an alien's head. When Earth is threatened by a fleet of alien invaders known as the Oni, Ataru is selected to represent humanity in a duel against one of them. It's a stroke of rare luck for Ataru that the duel is in fact a game of tag, and that his opponent is Lum, daughter of the Oni's leader, who places her personal dignity above victory—as Ataru finds out by seizing Lum's bikini top and with it, victory. However, misfortune kicks in again when Lum mistakes Ataru's promise to marry his girlfriend, Shinobu Miyake, as the desire to wed Lum herself, and decides she rather likes the idea. Wielding her influence as an alien princess, she moves in with him. Forced to deal with the consequences of his womanizing ways, Ataru must balance his crumbling relationship with Shinobu while keeping Lum happy, all the while flirting with every woman he meets. | For reference, Rumiko Takahashi's OG was already quite perfect and quite far ahead of its time. But a remake of a 44-year old classic by DavidPro? JoJo fans go brrrrr if they decide to finish Stone Ocean before getting on this. And this is a 4-cour, meaning that it'll run for a year long, so I'm looking forward to see the changes of a modern remake. |

| Hirano Fumi will always be best for Lum but that said still pretty excited for the remake, specially since David pro will be doing it and we are gonna get 4 cour to boot. Uesaka Sumire and Hiroshi Kamiya are good voice casts for Lum and Ataru too. |

| I already saw source telling it was david production yesterday. That turn out right Also 4cour is actually very less than the old anime episode count, so this on would have nothing to add? I was expecting it to include chapter which didn't make it into the old anime. Then isnt watch old is the better option Anyway I atleast hope this may lead to rumiko takanashi other more needed works getting adaptation. (Like Ranma or Rin ne could use a sequal since they are incomplete or one pound gospel was just a ova, could use a remake and mao has got any yet, so thats also there) |

| Great news but I wish Akemi Takada was involved. I'm also gonna miss the original voice actors but Ataru's voice actor is in his 70s so replacing him makes sense even though he still sounds extremely young. |

| Why did they feel like this is a good idea? Urusei Yatsura is a classic, not in small part due to the original voice cast. You can't just replace Hirano Fumi as Lum. I doubt they'll get any of the other legendary cast back either, like Kamiya Akira for Mendou or Chiba Shigeru for Megane (if they will even include this character). And what are they going to do about the 80s setting. Afaik the story heavily relied on it, and you can't exactly replicate that today. Will they age things up to play in modern times? Will Ataru now be going around with a Smartphone in hand and ask girls their mail address? Speaking of Ataru's behavior, I pray they won't turn down his perverted antics. A bunch of the stuff he does can be considered "wrong" nowadays, but that's what makes him who he his. I can easily see them censoring even that iconic scene in the first episode where Ataru undresses Lum in front of everyone, revealing her chest to win the challenge. If they wanted to reboot an old Takahashi Rumiko series couldn't they have at least chosen Ranma, the only one of her large works of old still left partially unadapted? I'll keep my expectations as low as possible for the time being, because it's evident they can't surpass or even come close to the old series, but I'll pray that it will turn out somewhat decent at least. |

Need to remove all that pesky grain, replace the painted backgrounds with clean gradients and computer images, and compose it for widescreen, because 4:3 is so dated and the screen must be filled. I'll check out the original Urusei Yatsura after Maison Ikkoku and probably never watch this. |

| Holy fucking shit this is probably the most random thing since the Shaman King remake. But I guess the Inuyasha sequel thing is still airing so it's not that insane. The original show honestly wasn't that good but I am still looking forward to seeing the old characters again. And who knows maybe they'll give it a more proper ending this time. |

You and me may be fine with them, but it is perfectly understandable why someone born in late 90s, or early 2000s, or even younger would prefer to avoid those titles. | Urusei Yatsura is the reason why I still watch anime at 29 years old. I was 11 or 12 years old when I found it by accident when I was zapping through the channels. I was hooked and I must have rewatched the whole series at least 3 times. It's still my favourite anime and I couldn't possibly be happier than what I'm feeling right now! However, I'm not happy about the voice actors. The originals Lum's and Ataru's seiyuus did a fantastic job and a lot of my nostalgia is because of them. ): Hiroshi Kamiya as Ataru has the right tone, though so at least it's a good choice. However Sumire Uesaka sounds nothing like the original Lum so no way I'm happy about that. |

| probably i'll give it a watch at least for the first episodes, finally finished the original series some months ago and even if it was good i still prefer Ranma 1/2 from the same mangaka and thus i would have liked more to see more new animated episodes for this one adapting more of the manga that didn't have OVAs adaptations after 1992, when the anime ended its run. No offense to Urusei Yatsura but i'm just more connected on a personal level to Rumiko's other major work. |

| Why? Anime doesn't have the issues Hollywood has, they have enough manga and LNs to adapt that they don't have to do many if any remakes of TV anime. If they're trying to appeal to western nostalgia or younger Japanese audiences, then it's 15 years too late, this is a Gen-X/older millennial anime from back when importing was godly and tape trading was king, young people won't care. |
