THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Released globally on Netflix on July 22.

FlyingDOG's 10th anniversary film, and what a name to plaster for a Netflix film.

The quiet introvert and innocent-looking, Haiku-communicating boy that is Cherry with a beautiful self-suppressed voice (that reminds me heavily of Senryuu Shoujo's Nanako), and the enthusiastic Smile who does all her cutesy interactions online and with a mask to hide her unusually shaped "beaver" buck teeth that's undergoing treatment with braces. The unforeseen and coincidental "clash" reminds me a lot of the Kimi no Na Wa. moments, the first glimpses of the boy and girl that acts in complete reverse with their swapped smartphones, thank God they each got it back, and learning something about each other for first impressions in the Summer season.

It all starts with a 'Like', and it slowly buds into the 'Followers' stage with the course of actions of working together in the same old folks day service home, all while the characters write up graffiti of Haiku that are sprinkled everywhere throughout the film as a means of expression, even the film title itself is a Haiku.

The grandfather Fujiyama's small record shop of vinyl records galore, the YAMAZAKURA record has always been his go-to-song amidst his ripe old age of failing memories...except that the record doesn't include the picture disc that he's been searching for his entire life, now passed onto Cherry and Smile (and eventually the character cast) to continue the search from their extensive contacts for his wife's song for decades...that's hidden right on a blind spot.

Hmm...Smile's a Yamazakura, people who are born with buck teeth. And true to the Summer themes with fireworks and such, defaulting to the potential romance between Cherry and Smile, which is to be expected. But Smile breaking the warped record, coupled with Cherry's soon-to-be family moving, and on top of the Daruma Festival, it all seemed like fate intervening for the worst.

As fate would have it, the same record disguised as a clock is a surprise, and is used for the festival song. That's where the insert song "YAMAZAKURA" by Taeko Oonuki comes in, and I admit I still shed man tears, even after hearing this released on Spotify first. Cherry using Haiku to confess his love for Smile at the end, that's so sweet, even if it was predictable.

The 3D camerawork of Sublimation is decent enough, it's serviceable.

If there is one thing I can say about this film in a consistent manner, it's eccentricity, both in high and low moments.
Overall, not a great film, but at least it's worth a good watch together with friends.

Nice movie.
I liked the movie quite a lot. The animation is very nice, The soundtrack is good(Kensuke Ushio does it). Also, The song "YAMAZAKURA" is sung by Taeko Onuki. and with the scene was very nice(The ending <3). And very good the credits song which coincidentally is named like the movie xd.
PS: The soundtrack is on Spotify.

I saw that the record disguised as a clock...and I immediately knew what was about to happen. If I had not seen the clock earlier...I would have thought that the twist came out of nowhere.
Overall I thought the movie was good...but unfortunately something I probably wouldn't re-watch or recommend to someone.
But I would say it was worth watching.

Made me cry at the last part when the old man (Sakura I think) was able to hear his wife's voice. The final scene was kinda cheesy which is not my vibe. The color palettes and character designs were great. Solid 8/10

The color theme of this movie is so dazzling, my eye is hurt lol. I like the story though. The only problem is the haiku, I dont understand them at all. I wish I could.

A meeting of chance. The Yamazakura song was so fitting & beautiful it made me cry. I’m glad Fujiyama got to listen to it again.

Charming little film, both Cherry & Smile were so cute & likeable. I loved how simple it was actually. Sometimes all you need is something, or someone, to remind you of the lovely things that make you, well, you.

That was a pleasant movie. I don't think it is a must-watch. There was nothing remarkable about the visuals, plot, or characters. The music really carried it for me. If you want a nice and fluffy romance it is a fine choice.

The animation was good, the music was good and the voice acting was solid. The characters had their moments but they were very lacking. I had to start watching at 1.5 x speed towards the middle cause it was getting boring but there were a few interesting scenes. My favourite part would be the yamazakura haiku. I really liked the double meaning of the leaves and the teeth. Overall, very meh.

I really liked the colorful art style, it managed to give the summer vibe. It was the best part of this movie. The music was great. 2 main characters’ relationship was pretty cute. I liked the ending, her smile at the end was adorable. Fun movie to lay back and watch.

Also, the unexpected appaerance of Kamiya Hiroshi was a nice surprise.

Ending feels too abrupt and open ended. So the guy confesses to her and she smiles and it ends with that? How about her answer to his confession? What's gonna happen with the guy having to move away? I just want to know what happens after that so I feel like an epilogue is needed. I just hate it when movies make us rely on our imagination to fill in big empty spaces.

Also, I know this is mean but man, is the girl ugly with her buck tooth. It's something I can't really ignore but she looks like a hamster and I just find it off putting.

Animation was pretty good (looked like great pretenders... even the character design). Story was kind of decent though ending was somewhat weak. I liked the rabbit teeth thing they did, it was kind of cute. One thing i absolutely hated about this movie was the soundtrack, they were soo dull until the song started. background sound felt soulless at many places even though they was a tit bit of effort here and there but not enough. ending song was somewhat decent though, but still for most part ost was literally putting me to sleep out of boredom

The haiku and Yamazakura were so beautiful. Also they used vibrant colors! It was nice, although it's a bit contradictory to the YAMAZAKURA song but that's what makes it interesting.

Simple and enjoyable.

Its cute i guess. The ending is nice though id prefer if that happened with like 10 or so minutes left. Im so sick of every romance anime doing the same plot of "will they wont they" until the final moments of the show. Its been done to death. Do something else. Have them start dating early so we can see them develop as a couple. As for this movie specifically its nothing new. Same old plot, animation is vibrant but not amazing, third act drama is forced and rather stupid. Everything played out exactly how youd expect it would. What a shame

Quite a lovely movie I must say, loved that outbursts ending, it had a quite familiar storytelling flow, and I also just moved that art style which fit the theme quite well in my opinion.

The moment they found the copy behind the fridge and flipped the side was a great giveaway and the anime while not directly does provide focus on it in a couple different ways and that I really did like. It was a dead giveaway that it would break, likewise with the clock.

I did really liked the flow of everything, the characters and especially the pacing.

So quite a great movie, a lot better than expected!

Would’ve ideally preferred to watch it the day before on its Netflix release but well, here we are. To be frank, I was looking forward to this ever since the first visual was released but it kind of felt bland.

Odd spot to end it off with as well, even though it’s obvious what the response was going to be. Question is whether the MC would still move or not, though.

Good thing there was a second disk around, Smile really messed up with the first there lol.

Romance aspect of the movie felt a little odd, despite how interesting the premise was. But well, it was kind of nice to keep up with the two, I guess.

Visual and sound-wise, the movie was really good. 6/10 from me.

Done with this movie. I was kinda not expecting much, but it kind of deliver itself as I thought.

So first of all, Art Style was eccentric in it's nature.
Soundtracks were pleasing. As expected from the one who made ost of Silent Voice too.

Coming to plot, we got our two main characters. FMC who's insecure about her bucked teeth and an autistic MC. Coming face to face with their issues, the adventure begun. And the disappointment I've is with their romance. To me, it was like it's not at all fleshed out. They just went through flow and in the end, it felt empty but he confessed (like how in cliché method it would be). Open ending as usual for any movie, aaargh, can't we get any perfect ending for any movie ?!

I think the people who don't have any knowledge of japanese, including me too, would face some confusion with those haikus, saijikis, kigo, etc.

Well overall, a 7/10 for me .

this movie was really nothing special, other than the eye catching coloring style of animation the other aspects were pretty ordinary. but so what? its not like they were trying to do anything special and i still enjoyed it plenty :D

not gonna lie i really disliked that climax it was so So cliche, could've been stopped if the main guy used his brain and tells his parents "yo can i stay a bit for the festival" but whatever i cringed a bit at the ending, was still really sweet tho.

the record clock was also so stupid who the fuck decided to put a 50 year old record as a clock? and the grandpa just pulled out the clock battery piece like its nothing😭😭

Just watched it in Netflix.. the art is very pretty. CG didn't feel unnatural and the characters are super cute >_> love the music too.. honest dunno why people are hating on it in reviews. Not every story needs to super layered or full of twists.. Love how the kids got over their fears and insecurities.. very loveable.

The movie is cute. The soundtrack fits the artstyle and the scenes perfectly.

30 minutes in and you can tell that other than the base story (about a boy who finds it difficult to speak up his feelings and a girl conscious of her front teeth finding confidence in themselves), everything else in the plot would be full of cliches. Whether a movie filled with cliches is good or bad is up to each individual to determine for themselves.

I don't really like the ending though...I guess long(?)-distance relationships might work in this day and age since it seems like Yui would still be in Japan after moving. If I were to rate this movie, I would give it an average rating (not gonna put numbers since rating these type of media by numbers isn't fair across the board).

To conclude, the movie is cute.
