the opening is nice, not as awesome as Shocking Lemon or Las Alliance but c'mon, seriously. this went really great for me as I just finished New Challenger yesterday, so I really feel like it takes from were it left. The flashback was a nice start, the part where Ippo enters his house with the hat... oh man, emotive. I'm really looking for the match between Miyata and Ippo

I'm gonna miss Kamogawa's voice, the new seiyuu isn't bad at all but I was too accustomed too Kamogawa's voice.
Anyway, nice start, it was nice to see Ippo's flashback, and also skipping Shimabukuros meeting and stuff was good for me since I didn't like this arc that much in the manga.
Currently watching everything that comes out to avoid missing something good...

I think they will add the background of kamogawa in this, right? or it wil be just a quick flashback?

Anyone who read the manga could gave us estimation if they can add it considering people here says that the adaptation of the main fight wil take alot episodes.

Most of the stuff have already been written but here's my two cents.

First of all it's just awesome to have Hajime no Ippo back on the air! It's by far my favorite anime and manga! The first episode felt really rushed but it still worked. They have a lot of ground to cover in this season and I can forgive that. Seeing as they will include Nekota&kamogawa gaiden in this one. I'm pretty sure every episode will feel a little rushed. I remember watching the new HxH series and thinking that it was so badly rushed but I got used to it and by the end I loved it. Here's hoping I get the same feeling about this one.

I'm already liking Rising more than New Challlenger. Something was always off for me with that series. The music was really there so I'm really happy they chose to use the old music for this season.

The VA for Kamogawa did a great job as well!

All in all I liked it a lot and I trust I will be entertained through the whole season. This will be the first time I'm actually looking forward to Takamuras match more. That's gonna be insane!

It was a decent episode.

Not quite as striking as very first episode of Ippo, but better than the debut of New Challenger.

The scene from Ippo's childhood was surprisingly well done. Maybe it's just the memory of reading the manga, but it's managed to get me a bit teary eyed. At least it wasn't the case of it feeling shallow compared to the source material.

Cutting out the weighing as well as the conversation between Ippo and Shimabukoro was a bad move, though. One of the strongest points of Hajime No Ippo is that you can root for Ippo's opponents as much as you'd root for the protagonist himself. Cutting out aforementioned interactions make Shimabukoro feel less like a three dimensional, likable character and more like a mere obstacle for Makunoichi to overcome. Oh, and I hope the director of this series won't discriminate against my beloved penis jokes!!!

All in all, not bad. I wasn't blown away, but it's still promising enough or me to hold on for at least a few episodes more.

I'm disappointed. Where's the training? Where's the sidestory for the opponent? This fight lacked both of those and they were the key aspects that makes Hajime No Ippo so unique. What is the opponent fighting for? Sidestories and the training is vital for us, the fans to have a slight sense of care for Ippo's opponents. Also the punching sounds, they lack the intensity and impact that keeps us so engaged to the fight. In the manga Ippo had to train his cardiovascular system in order to keep up the pace with his opponent, who could stay in water for 14 minutes, whilst he lasted 6. These minor details are needed to give a basis on their kind of fighting style.

How did Ippo last 5 rounds of intense close range boxing? How did his opponent last longer than him? Instead, they just skipped to the fight. Without the story that leads to the fight it'll just be like watching boxing matches on TV 1 by 1. Cuz in this episode, there was absolutely no character development at all. No story to backup Ippo's development in boxing. They just forced it in. There was no journey...

Hmm...Am quite exited for more Ippo since i absolutely love the series but this episode felt kind of rushed. A father flashback and already in the middle of a fight? That's tremendous pace for Hajime no Ippo. I don't remember well if their was a big build-up before this much but it certainly feels like the anime cut a few corners.

Also I didn't notice much of a difference in Kamogawa's voice, so this new seiyuu isn't bad. But overall, it's good to see that Ippo is back and these next 24 weeks will be awesome.

I was more upset the boxing commentator was different. The one they had was godly, hope he will still be in this one in other matches.

I decided to wait until it was almost over to watch this.

Anyway.. Wow that was rushed. They skipped a ridiculous amount of stuff.

The most important stuff was the background... hell they didn't even do the weigh in (which was hilarious..) Is it because of the end if new challenger? I know that they showed some of the stuff then, but they just grazed over it.

They also skipped the WW2 flashback... which is understandable since it was long, it would probably take up like 4-5 episodes by itself.

One more thing... what does he have FTL punches or something lol? Ippo's fist was at his throat and his was behind his head... theres no way his would have hit first.

God, that flashback in the first season now in better quality was way too touching. Loved it so so so much. Sad to hear about the Coach's new voice actor, I heard the original voice actor died, is this true? This is the only reason I could see them replacing him since he was the perfect actor for that role.

Oh yeah, I hope they bring back the original voice announcer for matches too, his voice was pretty fitting, especially for Ippo's second match vs Sendo, way too good.

Looking forward to the third season, I loved Hajime no Ippo very much, to think a sport could be so touching. I hope they continue adapting after Rising, the only acceptable ending for me is when Ippo retires, hehe.

As someone that's read this manga from chapter 1 to it's current chapter three times on top of watching Hajime no Ippo, New Challenger, and all the movies, this episode was a bit disappointing.

First, I'm glad they finally decided to continue with the anime of Hajime no Ippo. And I know it's only episode one, but they could've done so much better. The flashback about Ippo's father was touching, but they could've used that space as a flashback from prior seasons and introduce Shimabukuro and started building some tension. The flashback would've been a perfect ending for this season since it's actually suppose to happen after the Sawamura fight. It feels like they kinda just threw it in there just to do it. On top of that, one of the biggest things that kept me watching the anime was all the tension that built up between fighters and their fights. What happened to all the training Ippo did to go up against Shimabukuro? The training prior to this fight is one of the most important parts of the series since it's where the Dempsey Roll begins to evolve. And do they plan on skipping the turning point of this fight? Unless they do a flashback scene of Ippo's training, most people wouldn't be able to understand the reasoning behind it (unless of course they read the manga or looked at spoilers). If they plan on just skipping all the buildup for all the fights like this, which hopefully they wouldn't, I'd rather stick to re-reading the manga for a fourth time.

tl;dr
This episode is too fast paced compared to the other episodes of the series. I understand that they only have 25 episodes to get to the end of the Sawamura fight, but I personally would've been completely content with this season ending after Aoki's title fight and actually having a storyline rather than them just skipping through major points in the story just to get to the Sawamura fight. Chances are I'll stick with this and see it through to the end, but hopefully they do much better starting next episode.

Agreed, we usually see Ippo try his best during his training, but the flashback took up all the time.

Anyways, good start so far.

Aww, I miss the OP/ED of New Challenger. The new one's are decent, but not nearly as memorable.

Thankfully though, it looks like the original OST's have been brought back which is always welcome.

This episode was a mixed bag otherwise. The flashback with Ippo's dad was great, but this fight looks insanely rushed. I've never read the manga, but even I can tell a lot more buildup for this guy should have happened. Either way, the fight looks decent so far

Manly tears were shed in first half ;_:

Starting with a flashback huh? But those punches sounded dull tbh.

I can see how rushed the 2nd half was. No meeting during weigh-in, no build-up and we're thrown directly into a ring where Ippo fights his challenger.

Oh well, at least ED makes me feel nostalgic seeing the old characters. I wonder what happened to that female doctor lol
And oh I forgot, I saw Volg in OP too!! :')

Pros:
- Good old OST is re-used again.
- They cut right to the chase and don't waste much time.
- Ippo's "backstory" is a bit late, but it was actually touching. I love Ippo's mom, she's more of a badass than he is!

Cons:
- That godawful OP. And awful ED too.
- New narrator sucks balls. There's no hype!
- New voice actor for the old man is also not as good... the old one was freaking awesome. But the new one does his best and doesn't sound too bad.
- They changed the impact sounds of the punches, they don't sound as powerful.
- What the fuck is with this stupid "gimmick" fight? Boxers had their gimmicks before, but they were actual techniques and stuff. Now we have a freaking mermaidman with the power of depriving the enemy of oxygen. I think the fight would have been interesting enough if the difference in height was emphasized.

It might seem like I am overly negative... but I still enjoyed the first episode. I think I am only disappointed, because I know how much better Hajime no Ippo could be if it maintained the quality of the first season. I am not even looking forward to seeing Ippo fight anymore. I am more hyped for Aoki's fight, which I know he'll probably lose, but at least that guy is fun to watch.

I am curious to see whether this season continues the trend of the last one, which would be good enough for me. The series has lost its magic, but it's still a lot more entertaining than most other anime.

In most cases, the MAL Average Scores don't mean anything, here is a question: were the works made before 2000 all shit?
Why are they so damn scarce in the Top 50? Think about how MAL is quite literally a filtered amount of the Anime fanbase.

Here's a timeline of the Top 15 in which you can check that, almost always, the scores are affected by the freshness, popularity and other factors that have nothing to do with quality.

As much as I enjoyed this season it's noticeable how rushed this episode was. A lot of build up for the Shimabukuro fight was cut. That weigh-in had a hilarious moment. But then again, it's not a major fight and Ippo's backystory was touching. Makes you appreciate how far he's come even more.

Being the man he was, it's no wonder that Ippo's so proud of his father no matter how long it's been since the sea had taken him away from them. This third season definitely had a very emotional start!

I initially didn't know what he meant by bringing Ippo to the briny deep but it looks like he really meant it. His constant assault literally gives no time for the opponent to breathe.
