Ugh, Anna in the show is hard to watch with her irrational behavior. I doubt she can get along with anyone at this point.

Seeing Nene's past was more interesting though.

I knew the ending of the episode wouldn't be happy but God..not only did the ed song cut to black, which I thought was a glitch, but now I gotta wait a week to find out if Anna killed her own Mom...she crazy and scary

Absolute best episode of the season.

They did Anna absolutely dirty there, i was already feeling bad for her before this episode but wow, i can't like Shingetsu any longer after that (i was just okay with her before, too). She did NOT speak up and kept up this facade not noticing how much this meant to Anna, i don't blame Anna one bit for being in shambles, holy shit though, that sudden interference in the ED, my god, HOLY SHITTTTT

So losing only takes away the mages right to participate then huh. Funny how Nene's younger sisters are that much taller than she is due to the magic lol. So powerful mages are also susceptible to illnesses huh. Guess the quest to gain powerful magic also has a side effect. Despite their young ages each of the girls have potent reasons for wanting to be mages. In the wake of Anna's doubts Hakamada's reveal of her true self was to be expected. Her true self as shown last ep was't one that would follow someone that she saw as weak. So in the end Anna's hate actually stemmed from a misunderstanding as back then it was actually Shingetsu who cast that spell. With her foundation cracked by this revelation im curious to see where she will go from here. Overall a calm ep that served to expand upon both Granbelm itself as well as the struggles that Kuon, Anna and Shingetsu struggle with. The revelation about the truth of Anna's past was quite interesting.

Anna is a crazy person lol. She needs help.I didn't like how they cut the ED song in the middle of it. It's one of the few I enjoy listening to in this season. Also was that Anna's mum bleeding on the bed?

Time for revelations!!. It seems that Anna's destiny was to be a mage with little to no power who tried hard to be powerful, while Ernesta ended up being the blessed one (Or should I say cursed one considering the speech of Anna's mom?) Which probably caused her to be highly frustrated. I bet there's a little more to the story tho.

At first I thought it was odd to see Anna's calm expression at the end of the episode, just to come here noticing I missed a post credits scene... HOLY SHIT, Anna went full with her Edge. Oh damn damn damn, Can't wait for next episode!

After two straight Granbelm focused episodes, we’re getting back to the character drama and holy shit, it has really gone to the next level.
Seriously this series is managing to have both these intense action packed Battle Royale episodes, and then these emotional roller coasters in between them, this is so slept on and I’m mad about it.

Before the last 5 minutes, I was thinking "god, Anna is fucking annoying" ; when she was taken down, I found it was very satisfying.

Then I had a bit of pity for her, knowing the truth. And eventually I watched the ending and just concluded that she'd better die soon, 'cause she fucking annoys me lmao

Its so weird seeing Hibiki (Yuki Aoi) being the evil one Maria (Hikasa Yoko) being the less evil one. Also seeing them on the same side for a time while Symphogear XV airs is interesting.

You can clearly tell she was faking that smile at the end. I was so expecting her to pick that axe up and attack the two of them immediately after that smile.

(Update) Oh god I just watched that end credit scene. Jesus she's completely lost it. I hope Mangetsu gets hurt by her and Shingetsu gets pissed.

Anna is definitely the character I feel the most sympathy for, the end bit doesn't really change that, at least not yet. I kinda had the feeling this show was beating around the bush about fate and innate power, but this just laid it all bare. How do you confront your own limitations in a fucked up system, especially when your family is enabling you like that? This is great.

Shingetsu and Anna's relationship reaches a breaking point, as new revelations threaten to break Anna's world apart. On a more positive note, Nene holds no hard feelings against Mangetsu for beating at the Granbelm, but Mangetsu feels a bit guilty over the fact that her fellow mages have admirable desires to enter the Granbelm while at this time, she herself has been coasting along, with no real goal of her own. Also, I'm a bit surprised to learn that Anna's mother and sister do know about magic, but it does make sense, considering Shingetsu previously talked about magical families. Next episode will be even more intense, as it appears that Anna has been fully consumed by the dark side and she will do whatever it takes to win the Granbelm.

"The road to hell payed with good intentions" is perfectly describes this episode.

Man this episode was a lot but does definitely answer somethings. It also continues provide good character work. Yeah, I was waiting for other shoe drop with Anna in the end. There was no way she gonna take all that and not snap. I get why they didn't but Shingetsu and her mother really should have told Anna the truth long before she entered Granbelm. Even if might have broken her heart she would have at least have time to heal and move on.

Now she like wielding axe and almost murdered her foster sister and might have killed someone over her obsession.

I still have wonder Suishou's angle in all of this. No way she just geocentric underling.

This episode helped keep my faith in the series. Yeah that Anna twist was well executed but also the rest of the episode felt good. Listening to our two protagonists talk about life and how they feel about themselves was really touching. Anime certainly feels more human with series like this & Bunny Senpai

Holy. Stinking. SUPERSHIT!
This ep started out nice and calm, and kept going like that until Anna started getting weird, then the final confrontation... oh shit. Anna just got bursted down and all she could do was sit there and take it. I was so surprised when she smiled, she doesn't seem like the type to be able to compose herself all that well when she gets ganged up on so hard like that. Intense situations do that to people sometimes, though. Then, as the ED starts, I have it playing in the background while I tab over to go update MAL on the fact that I just watched the episode. The music suddenly cuts, I tab over back to the media player, and it's just black. I wonder, "did the media player get borked or something?" then I play it back, keep watching, and then HOLY FUCKING SHIT WHAT AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA ANNA DONE LOST IT. The end of that episode is one of the most intense things I've seen in a long time, so well fucking done writers, director, everyone involved! I love it.

Y'know, I was waiting for an episode like this. And holy shit did it deliver. I'm in hook, line, and sinker now. Instant classic, 10/10, AOTY right here. I'm homing on this show and there's nothing anyone can do to change my mind.

Ehhh I really did not like this ep, easily the worst yet (though it seems I'm in the small minority with this take?). That was a whole lot of stupid.

Why on Earth did they wait so long to tell her? Them keeping both things a secret like that completely conflicts with their character motivations (certainly the mom's anyway). And I'm still lost on just what she was/is supposed to be so edgily mad about... And that final scene? Yeaah. Nah.

The pacing also took quite a hit this episode I feel. So much jumping about from scene to scene without enough time to really deliver much with each one. 12 episodes is really tough for what they want to do here.

Felt for Anna, but I'm glad she finally accepted her fate and was able to reconcile with Ernesta. Speaking of Shingetsu, damn she is such a good girl and one of my favorite character this season! Such power and elegance!

Mangetsu is alright though, can't wait for the next battle because this was a little dramatic.

Going into this episode, I definitely see myself questioning the same way that Mangetsu does: What's the purpose of all the fighting if that same entity desires ONLY ONE mage to have it all: the Witch.

And with that, more reveals on Shingetsu and Anna's past. So it seems that Shingetsu is the blessed child and Anna's the cursed one, even though they're in the same family that is now in shackles. Suishou's role as a game-changer still has me up in arms.

To Mangetsu, Granbelm is still like a game to her, not knowing what lies ahead. A life of no dreams, no ambitions, nothingness.

To Anna though, it's like her entire life was a lie. Her own family history of distortion and powerless mage...everything was through Shingetsu. Oh the truth revealed in shame and regret, I really pity Anna at this point.

Regardless, Anna won't go without a fight...and the ED cut proves it all, that was some LEGIT shit there. I thought that it's a broken video, but nope...the suspense IS JUST...WOW, WHAT A TWIST!

Hoo boy, we're definitely in for the ride now!

Mangetsu being kind to Kuon is nice. Sick girl taking care of her cursed sister. Sad..

Glad to see that Nene-nee is ok. It seems she does not hold a grudge at all. Funny when she went to the high school classroom, people are looking.

The large greeb magic stone in Anna's family.. I could be wrong, but it looks similar to the gem that Suishou holds in the OP. I suspect that this gem would be taken by Suishou from Anna at some point in the story.

And lastly. Anna has gone crazy with possible murder of her mom. She now reminds me Dilandau from Escaflowne. ><

Now the big question : who is the final boss ?

Suishou : the more we learn about her the more I feel she was tagging along and playing servant just for the fun and is much stronger than anyone and is probably the one who cursed Kuon's sister.

Mangetsu : a complete mystery, always more fighting just for the thrill of fighting regardless of the consequences for the others. Where does her stone come from ?

As much as I hate Anna, I do have sympathy for her. Even though she's been giving it her all to become a strong mage, the fact that she's weak as a mage must've felt like being hit by Truck-kun at speed. That, as well as Hakamada finally dropping the facade and owning Anna when she tried to slap her, definitely pushed her over the edge.

The way she came at Shingetsu when she visited the household with an axe was scary, but she had to learn the truth about her lack of magical powers and how Shingetsu's own powers tricked Anna into believing that she could perform techniques that her mother and grandmother couldn't do before. I was surprised that she gave Shingetsu a kind smile, wishing her the best in her goal to become the witch.

Then came the ED......hooo boy. The ED got cut by a black screen for a second or two and I thought for a second that my internet was acting up. Just as I thought of that, we see Anna's mother in her bed, bleeding heavily from her arm, most likely during a struggle with Anna, rendering her mother unconscious(hopefully). When Anna got her hands on the big magic stone, her grin was, no denying it, absolutely insane and messed up.

The next episode is going to be filled with Anna losing her shit every few seconds, of I think it's safe to say that Shingetsu MUST defeat her and most likely will beat her. Whatever happens, I'm certainly looking forward to the next Granbelm fight. =D

There's way more than just envy. It's frustration that has been building up for a long time. Imagine being on a mage family that isn't that blessed by magic, then, add the pressure Anna must've been through while trying to dominate magic with no success, only to be taken away by a foreign girl that Anna's mom decided to adopt who also contributed on fooling her making her think that she finally succeeded.

There's a bit more to be told, about why Shingetsu decided to abandon her family.

Yikes, that was a horrific post-credit scene (and a little throwback of sorts to SnK S3 Part 1 finale)! No wonder why she smiled like that and it felt so off-putting, jeez she's so bloody irrational it's legit scary. Did she really just kill her own mother in her sleep? There'll be no saving her anymore after this...

Interesting revelation of the past between Ernesta and Anna though. Looks like she's sort of lived a life of lies and we finally get to see why Ernesta's been so hurtful and regretful at the same time. Being born into such a prestigious family and not being blessed (or cursed?) with innate abilities must be hard for Anna. Ernesta managing to pull off the trick that no one's been able to do is a big saying too, I wonder why. As @HereticHunter mentioned, I'm sure there's still a lot more to this and I'm really curious to know about it.

On the other hand, Nene makes up with Mangetsu right away and a friendly visit to the white-haired mage's residence. Moreover, the blue-haired girl remains suspicious as ever. Still can't exactly make out where this is going but I'm looking forward to more!

Exactly my thoughts. At least Shingetsu has the excuse of actually feeling sorry for what she did, as seen in the previous episodes. But I guess it's too late for any apology after what happened.

Well, she could have done anything, someone would still complain. If she told her the truth, people will be like
"what a bitchy mom, not believing in her child potential, etc... She may be weak but she may got stronger after, she should have let her child freedom and do what she want because with perseverance, we can achieve our dream, etc BS..."
Then people will be, so it's just an anime about genius and perseverance mean nothing...

That's just what the mom try to prove (that not everything is decided by fate) but she also try to not overhype her girl in case she failed (which she knew she would at 99%) which is the reality, only a few people can achieve their dream with only perseverance.
The mom never said her girl was a grand magician but she didn't forbid her trying taking that path.
The mom did right. Plus it's easy to say but in reality, can you imagine telling your beloved child that they have no talent ?
She would have told her, she would have been the bad girl, she didn't told her and she's the bad girl :/

Shingetsu has no better excuse than Anna's mother. Moreover SHE was guilty for making Anna believe she was good to begin with and she only told her really late after pride and all shit build up. At that moment, it's just better to say nothing and let her face the reality on her own.

The thing is, Anna's mother was trying to save her from a hard life trying to be a mage without talent. If that's the case though, she shouldn't have adopted Ernesta in order to be the family's mage candidate. She should have just resolved to have the family exist without competing in GRANBELM and without a mage. She should have steered the entire family out of the mage world.

I understand that she was trying to spare Anna, but of course she was also going to breed resentment from Anna, by bringing in Ernesta, even if her mother didn't think less of Anna because of her lack of power, there was little room for Anna to interpret Ernesta as anything other than a replacement for herself.

Also where was the mother when Anna took on two "apprentices"? Where was the mother when Anna kicked one of those apprentices out of the house? Does the mother not see that the remaining apprentice is completely unhinged....just like her own daughter?

I don't know if she adopted her purposely to be the family's mage, maybe I haven't followed everything but to me it's more like she adopted Ernesta for whatever reason and it happen that they discovered she was blessed by magic when Anna teach her the basics of magic so the mother just forced her to become the family's mage instead.
If she would have prevented Anna participating in Granbelm, it would just be what I explain above, the bad mother not believing in her own children. So she has no better choice than letting her do whatever she want but without giving her too much hope.

We don't have much information about the apprentices if they just get hired for the Granbelm or X others reason so we can't judge the mother on that yet.
About for the unhinged part, we as a spectator know how they're but the mother doesn't, Anna always have a good behave in front of her mother.

So, the truth was revealed.
Ernesta did not betrayed Anna or anything. Anna just lacked magical power and was inferior.
That's why Ernesta was chosen despite being adopted.
Now, knowing that her grudge was misplaced, she redirected it into her mother.
And judging how she was swinging that axe earlier...

Hyyym, I am moving from assumptions that the mother did know that it was Shingetsu that lit the bonfire. This is also my issue if she has known that she should say something to Anna about that later. Especially when she saw how deranged she became after battles. Just say in straight words "You can do everything else, but not this". It would hurt Anna a lot but at least she would have full information.

For Shingetsu defense she was a child and she tried to distance herself from Anna after that. On the other hand, I agree with you when she was older she shouldn't conceal this information even if it requires to physically bind Anna to a chair to force her to listen.
