I have to admit, watching one of the Jou twins running is kinda thrilling.

Seems this competition is taking the toll out of some runners though. I mean, physically and mentally, it's exhausting. Still, I'm rather impressed by how realistic they made the competition. Hell, even one of the runners collapsed after reaching the finishing line. That's almost kinda scary to think about.

Everyone's confused at older twin getting excited and younger twin also thinks if she's liking everyone as friend.

The guy who got fever is honest about it. His fever is severe to the extend that he cannot stand up, but still has to run.

Younger twin blamed himself not running faster enough because he felt that guy he has fever. His running is like otaku guy in the beginning because it's hard to run with the fever.

There is one university that already finished the race. Then, the main team finished with #20.

There's more tomorrow.

If run with "recommendation" by parents or own will...

I expected them to not have to cancel the race, but din't expect Shindo to pull through this hard, hes definitely the one who tried the hardest even more than prince.

This weeks episode flew by, Shindo looked worse than Prince did the first time he ran.
Even the old coach was concerned enough to get out and run beside him, understandably they're back in last place.
Also the whole twin situation reminds me a bit of the Ouran Highschool Host Club Manga.
So Haiji's dad was a coach, who it seems might somehow have been a worst coach than Kakeru's, imagine running you own kid so hard it messes up his leg.
Shindo's thought on why they run, really made me think how this show is such an awesome view on team sports.
If Ping Pong is the king of solo sports, this is the king of team sports.

Man the twins are so hilarious hahahaha.

Shindo literally risked his live and it was incredibly tough watching him, his teammates and family struggle. Who cares about placement, his sacrifice definitely strenghtened the moral even more and that's invaluable ;_; Yet another moving episode.

I'm a non professional runner, but I've played football in a team for 11 years, so I'm used to play in with other people that depend on me.
I'm not a big fan of spokon anime, but this one is just way too personal.
It's not about running, but why do we run, and it certainly represents the pshysical and psycological effort (and pain in most of the cases) of running.
Running is more about psychological strenght than physical one, and seeing Shindo run with fever (btw sometimes anime is motivational and can lead you to give the best of you, but please, if you're sick, don't run, stop because you can collapse easily, and you can't have medic attention in the moment) is a certainly emotional moment, struggling to continue so they could continue the Hakone Ekiden wich took them months of effort and pain... wow.

dayum, at this point i'm really curious who hana likes, i think she likes both and that's why she was crying or sad in that scene from 3 or 4 episodes ago. Also it was great watching him complete his run while being so sick. such a great episode

Jota shouldn't have distracted Joji like that, but Hana certainly cares about them, she blushes and can easily tell them apart. Her possible feelings have come up a lot so far, I do hope we get a more concrete "answer" in the end. But thanks to this Joji's section wasn't much about him or even inspiring like the first three, and that's sad.

Now, Shindo, my poor Shindo. I wonder what was Yuki feeling as he sent him to run like that, but we could see Joji's mortification when he realized how serious Shindo's condition was and how he messed up by not running as well as he could. Shindo's section was painful to watch too. Especially to his family, to his teammates and to us. Just as Kakeru said: we couldn't look away. And as the announcer said: Shindo has the strongest will in the country. I can't believe he ran for 20.7km like that, way to go!

I didn't know Hakone was divided into two days though, so when Shindo fainted and then in a moment the sun was already setting, I thought that it was over. I was also a bit disappointed to see him so well right after it. I mean, I didn't want him to die or anything, and I know that you can get better from a fever with a bit of rest and medication, but it was still anticlimactic.

The bit with Haiji talking to Kakeru about his past was good though. I don't know about his father not being a "bad" person, but as a coach he should've realized that his son/student was pushing himself to the point of breaking. But well, that's it. There are five sections to go, and the title of the next episode is unsettling yet again, I don't want any goodbyes.

What a painfully good episode. Shindo is one of my favorite character and seeing him go through that hell was hard, really hard. I was like his sister and precisely showing how hard it was on his family and friends to see him in this state made it even more dramatic. I was with them, I was one of them. Thankfully, he made it and he is not in the hospital for some pneumonia or any big trouble.

Sometimes I hoped Shindo would transform in super sayian or something, but no, no level up here, just suffering until the end

Incredible episode again, holy shit.

Joji screwed up a bit cause his mind was on what Jota told him but he eventually managed to pull himself together, however the fact that he couldn't gain a lot of time really hurt them. :(

Shindou, my man, my heart goes out to you. That was one of the most incredible displays of pure willpower I've seen. It was so difficult just watching him trying to run the course, constantly wobbling and falling. His family just horrified at the way he was running, his mom crying. Everything hit so hard, I teared up on multiple occasions watching him run but he saw it through to the end. He never gave up, just kept going forward, shindou, props to you. T.T

Can't wait to see the others run.

After watching this episode I finally decided to google Hakone Ekiden. The wikipedia explanation on each section actually clarifies a few things: the third section is the most scenic and has the most spectators, which might explain why Hana was there and the fifth section is the longest and most severe, making Shindo's prestation even more impressive.
Must say this was a brilliant episode. This is one of the best anime this season.

Wow, it was so painful to watch Shindo running, being honest. But as painful as it was, it also made me feel a lot of respect for him I mean, he ran with high fever, which one was getting worse and worse, for more than 20 kms. in the most severe section of the Hakone... man, such a strong willpower. Sure, it was also stupid to risk your own life like that but honestly, if I were in his situation, I wouldn't dare to stop until the end, even if I collapsed.

That aside, I didn't really expect Jota's words to affect Joji's performance that bad, he was so distracted during most of his section and as a result, it gave Shindo a bit more of pressure when it was his turn. Such a shame since he didn't do it on purpose and seeing him so frustrated just made me feel really bad for him.

Overall, it was a pretty moving episode. I really hope Shindo's sacrifice can encourage the rest of the team to give their all. Now, it's Yuki's turn under the snow. Absolutely looking forward to it!

The animation was brilliant. I could almost feel Shindo's fever.

The coach was so embarrassed after saying 'suki nara hashire'. lol. But, I can't blame him.

I was quite worried about Shindo this episode. I knew he'd finish the race, because plot demands him to do so. However, the price he pays for that might be high.

We finally learnt something more about Haiji. After this point, I am afraid to learn more.

Yeah this is what I kept thinking while watching the episode. I know they wanted to be dramatic and show how strong he is but letting him run was so irresponsible and dangerous. (And unrealistic but this is anime so...)

"Even though I fall apart." What an emotional episode. Shindo is really incredible it's true, I was sad that he could not run with all his potential, but despite his condition, what he did, he left me admired. He is a really admirable guy. It almost moved me to tears. What a great anime. Are the Hakone mountains ...? The most impined! ✊. I hope that in the second half Kansei I can overcome the race.

What is this anime trying to do to me?! That was so damn sad! Shindo was the most enthusiastic and Hakone Ekiden is a once in a life time chance for someone like him. So much respect for him making it all the way. As his teammate i wouldn't care if he came last or didn't finish at all; i'd be thankful that he tried so hard for the team

my boy ran the longest and steepest section (20.7km! or around 13mi!) with a terrible fever! After giving up everything for this race, losing his girlfriend and all of his free time, working so hard and experiencing so much pain for MONTHS, he couldn’t try his hardest because of something completely out of his control. To see all your hard work come crumbling down must’ve been crushing, but he didn’t complain. He could barely stand much less run. His family watching him back home was crying, his teammates were devastated but understanding, and the coach was trying his hardest to get Shindo to stop, because he was killing himself. He stopped at one point and it seemed like the end but he just! kept! going! slow and wobbly but fiery nonetheless. He fought so hard and he finished! (and promptly passed the fuck out.) The announcer was right- he does have the strongest will in the country! I am so proud of Shindo! T.T

Also, Joji being so upset that he didn’t run as fast as he could, the team doing another chant together were very touching moments as well. This is my favorite episode to date. I can’t wait to see how they finish it off in the next 3 weeks!

I knew Shindo had to make it because there's no way they get disqualified here, but man that was intense. When you're sick with a bad fever you feel exhausted just from getting out of bed and walking to that bathroom. I can't imagine how Shindo pulled through like that. It was a real shame with all his family watching. Still I wish they avoided the sick trope.
