You hit on exactly what the problem with use of slavery in this series is besides the obvious moral issues. Because even if you don't care about that it's still very pointless angle of the story. You could do everything about Naofumi and Raph's relationship in 2nd episode without even being thing. Naofumi's attempts to force do things with pain never work and stop doing at end of episode. Nobody in this thread is taking about because you just ignore it. It is not an element critically engaged in series and only exists to attract edgelords until characters start forming similiar relationships you see in most isekai. For that matter all the isekai that involve the MC participanting slave feisthism are just like SH, where all protags are nice to their slaves so it is okay, harem or otherwise. It is bad plot device that would have been better served not being there. But its huge trend on Narou ever since Slave Harem so everyone does it.

As far 2nd episode is concerned, I don't have any issues with pacing. If anything its better improve Naofumi and Raph relationship to acceptable standards for the shows interest. What was lost is minor anyway.

There was a point to having Raphtalia be a slave. Here are several reasons:
1. Naofumi was traumatized and had severe trust issues. He could not trust anyone unless they literally could not betray or disobey him. That's how low he has sunken.
2. Everyone in Melromarc hates Naofumi so finding any other companion apart from a slave would be extremely hard for him. Even if he could have conceivably recruited a street urchin or some random demi-human off the street it was nowhere near as foolproof as buying a slave with a slave seal.
3. Naofumi was running out of time. The next wave was in a few weeks and he was already severely underleveled. He needed an offensive option ASAP so he can level up enough to survive.
4. Naofumi also had the ulterior motive of treating Raphtalia like shit so he can pretend that he had enslaved Myne, all to satisfy his personal grudge. But then he saw that Raphtalia was 10x worse off than he was and abandoned the idea.

I must say I was appalled by the way Naofumi treated Raphtalia at first, but he soon changed a bit towards her. I guess the dude is nice by nature and can't help it, he even protected her against those dogs. Here's to the beginning of a good great companionship.

I wish they would go back to that human/monster/demihuman/whatever trafficker and punish him somehow. I just hate those type of people and it seems like the show won't do anything to such a bad shit.

Funny how so many people hated Goblin slayer because of one censored rape scene, but don't condemn this for trafficking. The way Goblin Slayer approached that episode at the end was great, but Raphtalia is still a slave to the shield hero although in a different way.

Hypocrisy is sky high here!

I don't get the controversy with this show, it's been fantastic so far!
Raphtalia is so cute, and i'm glad that the MC's heart melted way faster than i thought xD Can't wait for more of their adventures, i'm loving this so much!

I read the equivalent manga chapters yesterday. Watching it the first time, it felt rushed to me, despite firmly hitting all the major plot points and still fitting in some small things.

Upon a rewatch, however, it didn’t feel rushed at all.

Pretty excellent stuff so far. I'm engaged with Naofumi's development as a character. He's someone who no longer cares to wear a mask. Upon realizing the harsh realities of the world, he's willing do anything it takes to get stronger and achieve his goals in it. Naofumi bares many of my favorite character tropes, and it'll be interesting to see how they're explored further as the story unfolds. And um, Raphtalia is adorable. Glad they gave us a backstory.

On another note — that fact that people give these fake outragers (on twitter or elsewhere) their time of day is beyond me. Attention is your most valuable asset. Don't use it to feed the plebs.

You can think she's being shy here but in fact she is looking at that kid.

Kyon_at_Best said:
Funny thing about the kid's meal. She does look at the kid enjoying it, but the kid looks super far back in the background lol. Also she doesn't seem to drool but is curious. It feels like they skipped it, but it is there if you look back at it. But it doesn't feel like it because the kid is like 2 tables away and she only looks at them from the corner of her eye. Naofumi also interrupts pretty quickly after noticing so the scene isn't particularly noticeable at first. Another reason why you might have glossed over it is because of reading the background subs from customer comments on how a demi-human was eating there. If you pay attention to reading, it's really easy to miss her looking over. I missed it and had to rewind to notice.

Good point about the subs. Makes me think that maybe after decades of watching anime with subs, it can't be THAT hard to learn to understand japanese without subs :D

I did view the ep a second time and i must say it worked quite a lot better. Which is a surprising testament to quality of the show. I am even sold on the dinner scene now, because that's about the only way a scared and reserved slave walking into an establishment that outright forbids her race can show interest in anything.

So the show is enjoyable, despite glaring plot and characterization issues.

What I don't understand is the controversy. Naofumi is not that bad of a person by anime character standards, and even what is show on TV there are people much WORSE than he is--yet he's portrayed as literally Hitler on social media. Compare him to any of the Drifters, Juno, or even the atrocities Momonga lets his subordinates do in his name and he's a saint. He's a prick by isekai standards--but that fanbase may want to grow a spine.

If put against western TV characters (GoT, Breaking Bad) he's also a total cupcake.

Rape, sexual violence, slavery, etc. are elements of just about any show with a medieval technology setting and I don't even know if Japanese creators give a shit that these are delicate subjects in our evolved woke Western culture... even so having skimmed over the LN there's nothing that controversial here by anime standards and certainly not by what we watch on TV in the US.

There are lots of isekai shows that are set in a happier worlds and have cleaner MCs. This one doesn't, but that's not even what bothers me about the show... summon four rando assholes who can't even get along, give them godlike powers, and then expect them to save your world? Really?

Even in Konosuba that kind of premise would have been laughed at.

Oooh! I love games where the pets get experience too!

Aww, poor little Raphtalia had to go through a lot. It's rather convenient that that two-headed dog was in the mine, but oh well. At least Raphtalia knows that she can't lose the one person who found her and is caring for her.

Yeah, that context does explain things.

I figured it was something like that when they touched on the subject of four countries and four hourglasses (implying mutual responsibility) also that the shield hero is a friend of the demis (ep 2).

Kinda feel like these important plot points would be easier to pick up on if I had read more of the books before watching... at least they try to imply it more than other shows that expect you to have read the source material.

I can see a lot of people getting upset about the controversial slave concept of this show, but you have to know here in the US it's a touchy subject because of the history we have with "slaves." However, overseas in Japan, it's probably not something as contentious. So please watch this anime with an open mind and know the cultural difference between where you're from and where this show originated from.
no, you just guilt yourselves over what your ancestors did. until recently everyone had slaves. And not all slavery was chattel slavery. And if you want to know how horrific slavery can be let's consider black slave owner who ate the slaves they owned once they could not use them anymore or muslim slave owners that castrated their male slaves. Sometimes you could get away with your balls but only if you were not a black slave. All black slaves got castrated by the muslim.

Whoa whoa whoa, get outta here with that understanding of history
If I do not speak the truth the stones will.
1. everyone had slaves until about 100 years ago
2. there are types of slavery except chattel slavery, i.e. debt slavery, wage slavery, scrip slavery, land attached slavery, sex slavery. And I believe debt slavery is the worst because you hope that you will make enough to pay your debt and escape but many times the system is rigged against you
3. black slaves where bough in america from black slave owners from africa
4. Muslims were the biggest slave owners in history and they had all types of slaves. What is interesting in arabic the word for black person also means slave
5. europeans freed their slaves freely and the former slaves live much better lives they would have lived in Africa as free men. Even as slaves they lived better lives.
6. just because some behavior is morally wrong does not mean it cannot be analyzed

Poor Raphtalia. She was once part of a happy family with her parents, but sadly, she lost them both due to the wave of catastrophe. Seeing her in the condition she is when Naofumi chose her to become his slave was depressing.

Thankfully, Naofumi is a good person at heart and although his personality has still maintained that harsh bluntness after being falsely accused of rape in the last episode, he does his best to train up Raphtalia, as well as giving her food, drink, medicine and he also makes sure he's always there to comfort her when she's having her nightmares while asleep.

Their improving trust between them was put to the test in the cave where they encountered a two-headed dog beast, almost similar to the one that killed Raphtalia's parents. Seeing her muster up the courage to slay the beast while Naofumi had it distracted was really awesome. =)

The ED animation was good and the same goes for the song, too. Overall, I prefer the OP animation/song combo more.

Hears an unpopular opinion, I hate "Demi-humans" in Anime, namely, the horse anime, the snake anime and etc. But maybe my opinion will gradually change. We'll see about that. The episode is good, I get to see some of Raphtalia's past, why she is in her current state and etc. I get why Naofumi treats her that way and also doesn't hold back when trying to show her the reality of their world. On another note, the OP is good but I like the ED song better, it fits the ED animation well, the song is emotional and melancholic.

Judging by the manga, the most interesting part is over. Here comes the cop out time skip that isn't a time skip which turns things much more "standard". Well, at least it should be still pretty good till stupid bird comes... Putting that aside, it felt really shushed. There was no time to develop any of the characters or relations between them. Dynamic between Shield Hero and tanuki girl could be interesting if explored but they completely skimmed over it. It feels like just another "poor, cute girl taken in by a coldhearted-on-the-surface guy". I just hope we will see enough MC being a dick to everyone else.

It would be tolerable if the show itself acknowledged that the relationship was disgusting. The cherry on top was in the ED, the show had the audacity to show a smiling still image of the slave girl cuddling next to her abuser. How dare they? This is beyond the pale. I cannot and will not tolerate this tone deftness.
