I watched the first 2 seasons 5ish years ago, when I was a 16 year old teenager still relatively new to the anime medium.

I remember having good memories of this series in general, so when the 3rd season was announced I was pretty excited. I don't really have the time to rewatch 50+ episodes so I just read some recaps here and there, to have a general comprehension of what was going on before starting the new season. Well, my first impression when I started was ok overall - I missed the characters so I was happy - but I noticed the awful animations right from the start (they really are below average).

After episode 3 all I can think of is how boring, full of silly fanservice and bad looking this season is.

I thought some of you may have gone through the same as me, maybe we changed and our tastes are different or maybe the series changed. Or maybe someone can tell me why I'm wrong and why I should continue watching this show, because now I'm on the verge of dropping it (I don't enjoy it but my good memories make me go on watching).

The adaption is just bad rushed as hell no time to introduce characters, and the production schedule is horrendous, they had for ep 3 10 animation directors that tells u how far behind they’re actually are with this.

Season 3 is much better than season 1 in my opinion. Season 1 was the weakest one

Also, some of the "new" character in index 3 are not really new. They appeared in Railgun 2nd season

I feel the same man. I was excited for this third season but it feels so rushed. They keep throwing characters and names i don't know and it feels just boring, cliché and the bad animation really fucks the show. I remember I liked 1st and 2nd season, maybe my taste changed, and yours too. But one thing I remember clearly is the fanservice has been always annoying for me, it's always the same situations, forced and tasteless as always.

So It's not just me huh?

I enjoyed the previous seasons but this one is just boring.

I don't know if it is because of the rushed pacing but the plot even feels stupid, almost as a "Rikka moment"("Chūnibyō Demo Koi ga Shitai!" ) .

At least is not as rushed as Tokyo Ghoul:re. (Also boring as you can't remember who is who and who dies because it's too fast to even think about it).

It seems that only the novel/manga readers can enjoy these shows. The last time a show felt like that to me was when Shana final season aired.

The story don't make any sense, and I feel Touma is off. Touma hasn't been showing off or utilizing the power of his Imagine Breaker like he used to. In the past 2 seasons, Touma would use his Imagine Breaker to his advantage and fight aggressively, charge head on pew pew absorb all magic then, land a devastating punch. (like the Orianna punch or punch on Nun girl) Also in Season 1, when Touma absorbed head on the heavy fire attack from Stiyl's fire monster Innocentius, that was freaking badass and showed the power of Imagine Breaker. This season, he has been very defensive so far, and when he did punch, it seemed more like a flail than a knockout teeth breaker.

I hope index drops some of its tropes, like its stupid fanservice scenes.

Ay, there’s your problem. When you watch more anime, you become more exposed to its cliches and tropes. Your taste in anime will eventually change as years pass.

I just recently watched through the Index/Railgun series (say in the last 18 months) and so far this season is disappointing. Definitely rushed, lots of weird exposition, and not much in the way of a coherent story. I absolutely agree that I feel like reading the novels or manga instead because this is a mess. I'm not entertained, which is a shame.

Terra of the left is a lot more dangerous and confusing than Stiyl or Oriana, but once he figured it all out he stopped being defensive. Touma was never the type to only fight aggressively, his fighting style is based on the situation

Well... the quality of the direction, the animation and the script makes me see an unfunny and plain clown when I see Terra of the left, just like one popped out from a country town carnival. Styl and Oriana had much more impact.

Terra looks silly no matter how one cuts it since he always had this clown look, but the main thing is that he's a weird country town carnival man who can go through walls n shit and even counter amakusa techniques Touma has problems with. But yeah overall he has less impact probably because he's a one volume villain, what he talked about is more important than what he actually did.

agree. as ln reader and watch season 1 and 2 index i can tell you its rushed adaptation. the battle touma between terra is lame. index season 1 and 2 much better than index 3. to give you comparison season 1 and 2 index cover 14 volume light novel. 4 episode per volume to give information about whats going on or lot of detail. in index 3 it fail so hard to live up expectation. animation and action definetely better season 1 and 2.

lets see bd and dvd selling.i guess the one really know index is the fan itself.

Index anime adaptation has always been awful like that. The younger you simply had way lower standards. Your standards of quality improved, Index anime staff did not.

Yes, probably... now it's really a generic fanservice filled action anime for me.

I like the season 3 opening, but this is what I like about Touma, the Season 1 opening sums it up perfectly. Touma giving his speeches, then proceeding to say (he'll crush their illusion or something like that with Imagine Breaker) and throwing a Imagine Breaker punch! many times punching bitches like Oriana. We haven't seen this in Season 3 !!!!! Here's the Season 1 opening https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fv2Ybecq92E 1:06-1:21 what I referring to

Yeah I agree, Terra is much less a cool villain than Stiyl and Oriana.

As already said, it's probably more a matter of you growing up and your taste changing, than the show actually being worse than it used to be (aside from the animations problem).
The Index anime adaptation has always been kinda rushed, with most of its arcs only spanning around 3 episodes (which can still be considered the standard for light novel adaptations), and always had a lot of fanservice (the directors definitely love those bath scenes...).
While I love the world of the "ToAru" franchise and its ideas, I'd say the novel itself has some ups and downs, with volume 14 of the OT (the source material for the first three episodes of this third season) definitely not being among its top ones.

They've changed a lot of the general feel... Especially in the pacing and sound areas. The sounds are more low-pitched to match that bad "modern" style that is prevalent these days, iconic Imagine Breaker cancel sound replaced with some generic sounding bang-woosh sound...

Nope I've rewatch previous seasons (Railgun include) and it was far better.
Railgun is pretty good with a great animation for 2012 better than the animation of Index III.. in 2018.
Railgun > Index I&II overall

But Index II > Index I > Index III
Because the rush of Index III doesn't make sense.
Too much characters, too fast, no explanations, it's garbage.
And a friend who loves the LN is desesperate.

I'm so disappointed.. This part is the best of Majutsu's LN and we have a shitty adaptation...

The way the story is being told is a bit off putting. But depending on what you decide to focus on, you can still enjoy the show.
Personally I focused on Accelerator's portion and soldiered through Touma's boring portion. I've reached ep 17 and am liking the 3rd season in spite of it's shortcomings.
But you gotta put your rose-colored glasses on, arm yourself with patience and choose to focus on the parts you like, ignoring whatever else annoys or bores you. If you can't, just drop the anime.
