THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.

What an intense episode. I see this show really makes a good case of what these battle puppets can do. Shirogane's skills never ceases to impress me.

Narumi's such a daredvil tbh. I think he sometimes take way more risk anyone else. On the other hand, I like how his relationship wtih Shirogane has grown more tha doesn't constantly involve bickering and arguments.

Three episodes now and this show still impresses me.

Damn, this was an intense and eventful episode!

I have just watched the episode in raw, so I’ll most definitely watch the subbed version first thing after I wake up in the morning.

Narumi x Shirogane just took a giant leap forward and I’m so glad to finally see that! Shirogane’s past sure was rough, learning how to become a puppet-master right from birth and those clips of her practicing were harsh. Her smile(or was it a laugh?) was gorgeous as Narumi pointed out, lol, and I just loved how he was confused why his extreme hiccups(I don’t know how else to put it, xD) stopped and his heart was racing. She even blushed in the end there! Narumi really took the fall all onto himself and I’m surprised he wasn’t too gravely injured.

Anyways, back to the plot. Narumi and Shirogane just bashing in through the front entrance was badass. We finally got to see a bit more of Narumi’s fighting skills and the usual treat of Shirogane’s badassery, so no complaints with the action. Masaru, meanwhile, and that creepy old jeezer scenes were sure creepy and just so spooky. Just the face expression was legitimately disturbing and frightening. I’m not sure what the revelations were all about, I’ll need the subs for that. Masaru gathering some courage and jumping off the window only to fall on the puppet master was funny but felt too convenient as did a few other things in this episode. Just a few, however, so not a big turn off just yet. That face expression of the kid at the start of the episode though was extreme, and I fully mean it! It was extreme!

Overall, a great Episode in terms of Characterization of Shirogane and Masaru in particular and Action(mix of Animation and Sound Department) which were top-notch. While the Storyline(particularly due to the convenience factor) wasn’t at its best, it still did mighty well to keep up with the other two departments(I don’t know about the revelations though, so maybe that could alter my impression of the episode).

Edit: I finally got around to watching the subs just a while ago, and it was even more brilliant than I anticipated! Masaru sure has developed immensely in very short time and those revelations were very vital, just like I expected.
Solid breathtaking episode, I’m really loving this show so far! I hope it doesn’t get too fast-paced and keeps up at this rate.

Ok, I feel like the pacing is alittle fast (not surprised though cuz it only has 36 episodes to cover 44 volumes), but oh boy, it sure is a pumping shonen series.

Didn't expect Masaru to evolve so soon, but I like the change :D

ps: I was not wrong, I made some confirmation, they squish a whole volume into one episode.

Guess it's for the better. As of this episode, it's finished with Volume 2 of the manga. The pacing for the manga was quite tedious, with extra scenes that would show up maybe next episode...? Have to see then...

And holy cow was this episode intensive. From Narumi and Shirogane moments to how Masaru finally broke his timid self and be like a ferocious tiger after finding that he's bait for the competition of money. And that's all from his deceased dad's wishes.

Despite being a 3-cour, this has redeemed the retro within me that like Banana Fish, it's popular enough to be watched and rightfully so.

I can't hold myself anymore and gave volume 3 a watch.

Ho boy, next 1~2 episodes are going to be really good.
Hope this series would get some hype after next 2 episodes, cuz it really deserves it.
You don't see this many shonen get this intense this early on.

So is it confirmed they're basically doing the whole manga in 36 episodes? I'm reading the manga as I watch the anime, and they're cutting out a lot of stuff, so yes the pacing is really fast.

I loved Masaru's development this ep. I like the 90s art vibe, but in this episode the animation was already quite lazy which is a shame. Luckily the story is good so it doesn't matter as much.

So it seems what Narumi needs to treat his illness is the smile of a waifu. Cannot blame him, tbh.
Masaru got his resolve very early in the series, that's a good thing, let's hope he stays like this for the rest of the show. His uncle is one creepy bastard, though. Dem rape faces.

Oh dear God, if there's an episode that tells you "Yeah, this shit is going to be LIT right now" was this one right here! What an excellent episode. The Hype is real

Masaru took the words from Narumi and he's already a real Man now!

We got a glance of what Shirogane Waifu's life was back then... seems like everyone had a somewhat horrible childhood.

I wasn’t expecting Masaru to do a 180 but hopefully the series maintains his growth and he doesn’t go back to being just the kid in distress!

But that uncle was crazy though. For what reason would you beat a child you want to adopt until he bleeds?

This was so good! I can't even choose my favorite out of the main trio, I'm leaning towards Shirogane though. If it's to protect Masaru, she can become a ruthless, cold-hearted killer. I really wasn't expecting to see that guy dying like that, but he was one of the killers like she said, so even though it was pretty ruthless to let someone die in front of you like that, I can't really judge her. Then there's Narumi, he is a good guy all around, and he assured her of her humanity. It turns out her past, and training were really harsh, and painful, she was even told to throw away her humanity, becoming a puppet, and this is too much.

But we learned more abou the Saiga family, and the Kuroga clan, and it's getting really good! And there's Masaru! I hated to see him being beat up, but it was so nice that he didn't just wait for help, but instead decided to act, and tried to break free, killing his "weak" self in the process. It was epic! I'm so glad this one isn't going anywhere soon, being three cours and all. But if Masaru's father really wrote that, and is just using his son as bait, he is really a terrible person.

YO this character development tho! Looks like Narumi has someone to cure his parasympathetic seizure-laughing disease now ;))) I look forward to more Narumi x Shirogane.

Masaru you alpha as fucc boi, what a soldier.

I also didn't realise this show is going to be 36 eps and didn't realise it had so many volumes to cover, so now im SUPER hyped for this shounen now. Can't wait to see how much the characters develop, just 3 episodes has covered good ground so far. I really want to know how Narumi developed his disease and uncover his backstory.

ALSO, is anyone jamming out to that ending song each episode? It's SO. GOOD.
Easily my favourite ending song of this season.

Man i gotta say even though its fast paced, i never seen a whinny MC like Masaru grow a resolve so early in the series, I like it, its a very new feeling.

Also I'm still standing by the fact that all future puppet fights are just like stand fights in Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, the similarity is just too real.

Liked the look on Masaru's face, I guess he is toughening out and it's all thanks to the uncle's beating.

Loved the moment between Narumi and Shirogane in the tunnel, something is brewing there.

Very intense episode with a lot of puppet action. We also got some insight into Shirogane's past, as well as some character development for Masaru. I'm glad he already seems to be gaining more confidence instead of remaining the wimpy kid he was up until this point.

Also, his uncle is creepy af. Like, he was seriously making me uncomfortable.

What a horrible old man Masaru's uncle is and I think Masaru's father is just like him as well.
Shirogane and Narumi go to the rescue of Masaru, Narumi is a very strong fighter, the thugs who kidnapped Masaru did not have a chance to face him, on the other hand Shirogane and Arlequin are very strong too, they destroyed the karakuri door easily and defeated the puppeteer without major effort.
Masaru is forced to be adopted by his uncle, the boy flees and hides in a old bookshelf, there he finds a book where he discovers a horrible truth about his father, but his uncle finds him and obviously the old man who is a bastard hits Masaru.
Masaru takes the determination not to be a burden to his friends and he jumps from an impressive height and this falls in the middle of a fight where he save Ashihana, the man who wanted to kill him, Masaru asks him to fight for him, while Ashihana watches the intense look of Masaru.
A very good episode, action of good quality, the puppets are still my favorites, their designs are incredible. We also learned a little about Shirogane's past and her training as a puppeteer. Personally, it seemed the most cruel thing to strip off such basic emotions as to smile at a woman as beautiful as her.
I look forward to the next chapter, I hope they can defeat the group that kidnapped Masaru.

I still don't get why the main puppet of the series is in a mediocre CGI and the enemies puppets are 2D(quite good at that)... Is it cause Arlquin is dark and they think people don't notice it?

This episode is only a tip of iceberg.
The initial episodes would make you think it's a generic shonen, but ho boy, I can't stress how wrong it is.

I'm catching up to manga now , and so far I get the darkest/ most brutal yet touching shonen I've ever seen.
The flashback of key events are handled much better than One Piece and Naruto.
(I mention those 2 cuz those 2 series are famous for using numerous flashbacks to touch your heart/ makes you feel.)

Combine Fullmetal Alchemist + Hunter x Hunter + Parasite = Karacuri's Circus.
(Not about combat being similar, it's about how it handles flashback/ world building/ philosophical debate/foreshadowing )
Can't believe I were missing out this masterpiece back then.
Maybe I was too young to appreciate this series back then. (I was still a dumb kid at 2006 when the manga ended , and only interest in generic shonen at that time I guess)
