Even though this anime has a ton of pedophilia undertones, seeing both Misha and Tsubame as girls can be cute but I wonder if this formula would still work and sell if they were the opposite sex.

Probably not.

Even now that I am enjoying the show...it is only because there is no actual abuse being portrayed right now..and only because Tsubane is clearly more interested in getting Misha out of her shell..

But to be honest, Tsubane in real life would have long since gotten into trobule for her 'liking pre-pubescent girls'.

Yeah, this is already barely skating by on my “Is this too far” radar. Like Jao said, it’s only because Tsubame’s blatant pedophilia isn’t being expressed as actual abuse, and she’s also helping Misha become better as a person that it’s passing. I would say that the fact that she is clearly being portrayed in the wrong helps, but I’ve been burned on shows just being that in-self aware before.

That said, an ex-camando guy being uncomfortably doting on a little boy could be... about equally cringe, if well done.

I don't read the source material but I would ship Tsubame x Yasuhiro. If the genders were switched then I would still ship them because in the end Misha ends up with 2 loving parents instead of just 1.

I might be okay with this if her obsession with Misha lost the creepy overtones.

If they were boys, the fujoshis would be ALL over this show
There shouldn’t be much of a difference, either way it’s a creepy lolicon adult left in charge of a young child
I just think if they were boys this show would have a lot more controversy around it. kinda sucks how a simple gender change can do that.

I mean, the formula doesn't really work now, either. And people all over have been airing their grievances with this show. Honestly, if the maid wasn't so extreme like she is, this would be a wholesome and cute anime about an outsider to the family trying to cheer up a sweet girl after her mom's death.

so far it's not sexual in nature but rather more of a admiration and a strong will to be around her.

I really believe they (fujoshis) would 100% plus the fact that this series is being well made in good taste and not settling for cheap laughs would attract those on the fence about loliconism. (Is this even a word lol)

That scene on ep 3 where Tsubame was figuratively drooling and getting excited seeing little girls going to school one morning doesn't help her case either.

If just Kamoi was a guy... possibly, although that's a more common hentai formula.

If just Misha was a boy... maybe, although that didn't really work for me for Sunohara-sou no Kanrinin-san last season.

If both were guys... absolutely not

Miss Kobayashi Maid Dragon side characters Lucoa & Shouta had this setup also.

Maybe, but that was only a sub-plot, not the main arc

This is honestly what I had been hoping for when I initially read about the series. I thought maybe it would be a case of Misha misinterpreting the maid's interest in "cute" for something pedophilic, and it would morph into a rom-com involving the maid and father, and the kid's issue accepting a new parent. But nope -- it's legitimately about "pedophile shenanigans" as comedy, which I severely detest. The character of Benio ruined my enjoyment of "Engaged to the Unidentified," and she was merely a supporting character.

Nope. The reason I picked up this anime was because I thought Misha was cute, and female slice of life is the best.

Plus, I am not a fujoshi. Nor do I enjoy fujo-bait shows.

90% no
I hate to say that and know how bad it may sound, but I think I could accept more on-the-boundary stuff on opposite sex.
If Tsubame is male, would definitely challenge me.

The show is already bad. And if main characters are males, then that would make it even much worse

Only exception if the main character is trap (looks like Pico) then that would be good, because Pico looks better than most females

Well, I would take this option more seriously, since the premise with yuri lolicon already looks like a strange fetish. Although to be honest, yaoi shotacon will be scared me off as a very perverted and creepy idea.

Well, since MC is increasingly becoming the mother figure for Misha, then in theory it is possible. But then the show itself will become just a fake yuri.

Shonen Maid pandering to the souta fangirls, but there was no pedophilia in any way. Rather, a precise comparison would be Kodomo no Jikan or Sunohara-san.

Well yea, if the formula was the same. If it was a muscly over protective butler that doted on the innocence of boyish youth, then it would be the same. Same jokes, even if there was a skinny masochist 1st lieutenant bro. The problem is if it was two guys, it wouldnt be the same formula. It would be a fairy fruit cake who liked to sniff and touch. Cause there is no innocence in boys love with those kinds of gaps. If the example exists, post it in a reply and ill check it out. Going back to the topic, if it was identical with just genderbends, no problem for me.

Would I watch? Yes.
Would I like? Doubtful.

Age gaps make me wants to hurl.
The fact that an adult women fantasizes of marrying a child is disgusting.
The maid acts creepy at times too. Sorry.

Got the same feel when watching Happy Sugar Life.
Am yet to complete that.

Everyone knows what marriage entails. Even if they don't spell it out, marriage isn't only wearing a wedding garb, especially not to an adult. It implies much more. They won't spell it out for controversial reasons.

You see how Takanashi from Working fawned over little girls? He was a guy who loved small cute things. He never once struck me as a creep and never let his thought process escalate to such levels.

Age gaps with male characters has also been done in Super Lovers.
The older guy screamed pedo to me. And he was horny ugh. So uncomfortable to watch yet I somehow watched both seasons for the rest of the characters.
Left a bad aftertaste. Couldn't enjoy it as my regular similar age ships.
