Feels like a slice of life though.

It uses the slice of life feel as a foil for something much deeper, I think. And I thought this place would be a ghost town since no-one had posted in months :D

I'm rewatching this series for the third time.
It's one of my all time favorite anime.
I personally like it better than Lain because it has the symbolism but has a cast of characters. Lain's abstract flow is sometimes hard to follow and Lain is the only character you really get to know.

The scene with Rakka's wings sprouting was bloody to show the excruciating pain. Without it, the scene wouldn't have been as realistic and relate-able.

I also encourage anyone watching this the first time around to try to see the wings and halos as an atheistic and spiritual appeal rather than a religious one.

WOW what an beginning for a series. That part when the wings were ripping trough the skin was like "Ouch!" :o
Now I wonder if she really fell from the sky or was it just a dream? Anyway's that was a good start.

I've heard good things about this series so here I am. A promising first episode although I hope it focuses more on the supernatural/symbolism than slice of life.

Impressive first episode. I really like those end-of-the-world settings, but what's more the use of the greyish atmosphere is very interesting, not good, not evil, just undecidable. In a way there is no difference between limbo and the real world. It's refreshing for once to have a series placing itself beyond the black/white duality right from the start.

I've never seen anything like this before. The scene of the girl growing wings was truly shocking. I have high expectations for this anime.

Very intriguing first epidose, normally I have to watch a couple before I'm sure I want to continue. But this was so unusual. It's ethereal in almost an eerie way and the animation is stunning. I like the score as well, I hope it continues this well.

Ok, I'm back on another Ueda/Abe work with more theories.
There is less to go on this time because there is not as much minimalism. Its odd how that is when there is more minimalism there is more content to thin about but whatever.
I'm just gonna throw this out there, I think that even though it seems like they are supposed to be in Heaven, they could actually be in Hell. I think this for three reasons. 1. Rakka was falling when she was being birthed in the egg from a high place. This means she could a fallen angel or that when she was dying, it could be representative of her life going down hill as she becomes more evil for lack of a better word. 2. The way her wings sprouted was very grotesque and bloody. It looked like some unholy demonic kind of stuff when I first saw it. This also could be evidence of them being in hell under the illusion that they are in a good place. 3. Her halo didn't correctly fit on when she first tried to put it on which could mean she isn't worthy of it. The others made it seem like that happens to everyone who arrives in that world.
One thing I noticed was that when they showed the land beyond their area, it looked very barren and empty and it gave the impression that there is no one else out there.
This is all I've got so far because most of the other information in this episode was told to us so I can't really think of much else that is has debatable meaning.

I've been putting this off for way too long. The start is fascinating enough. Holy smokes, wings and halos are serious business. Going to be watching this side by side with a Kino's Journey rewatch, both seem to capture similar atmospheres so far.

Very strong first episode, looking forward to watching more and I hope they'll unfold a bit of the mystery of how and why they are what they are.

I didn't feel like it was too bloody. This way I could empathise a lot more with her in the growing of wings scenes, you can almost feel her pain

I will echo many other thoughts here by saying that wing scene was exceptionally disconcerting. I can't remember any anime making me cringe due to how grisly it was since first watching the first episode of Parasyte.

This reminded me a lot of Mushishi, except less emotionally resonant and less philosophical. Or so it seems so far. Interesting premise, but the first episode didn't really grip me.

A first episode of presentation of the world and the Haibane.
I liked the way the Haibanes call themselves, according to their dream. (In addition we learn Japanese words ^^)
The animation is correct without being exceptional. However the camera offers interesting plans and has a very fluid but not natural movement.
The music is beautiful and the ED is nice and reminds me of the Junrui wa Suitai Shimashita ED. (Even if I prefer the latter)

I love the chara design of Rakka and her seiyuu gave her a really cute voice.

I didn't like the scene (unnecessarily violent and inappropriate) when the wings of Rakka grow. It's really not nice.

I really liked Lain so I figured I'd give this one a watch. I know Haibane's creator was just the character designer for Lain but I also felt the aesthetics were one of the best parts of that series. This show may have slightly cheaper animation. But it certainly delivers on moody atmosphere and dark mysterious story telling. I assume the Haibane are angels. And they can't remember anything because they're in the afterlife. But I'm prepared for this show to throw some craziness at me. I almost hope I'm wrong.

I think this show is already narratively a lot stronger than Lain. Its first episode was seriously gripping and flew by in no time. All this despite only taking place in pretty much one fixed setting. It masterfully handled introducing characters and plot with real intelligence and warmth. And the wing growing scene was absolutely brutal. I love shows that create a cool strange world with interesting rules. I can't wait to hear more of them in the episodes to come.

It may remind you of those franchises, but saying it's "the same"... I just looked through most of the creative team and none of them worked on Love Hina or Negima. (I may have missed something though.) I think you may have been confused by the fact that Mahou Sensei Negima (2005) and Love Hina (2000) are roughly from the same era as Haibane Renmei (2002), as they would share some similarities due to the production techniques and trends at the time.

The animation is horrible tbh and the subs aren't accurate, but I'll watch this for the plot.

I dropped this anime back in 2015 (or was it 2014?) and recently I decided to give it another chance. I hope the plot thickens and gets more deep soon.
