The panties fight was pretty good too! lol A teenage girl, plays with a children's doll, and takes it melodramatically seriously... I'm sorry, I don't understand how anyone finds that funny. Don't over analyze it...it's funny because Yoshiko is supposed to be the mature one but her idiocy leads to the absurdity of the situation and that's what makes it hilarious. Absurdity=Hilarity when characters act out situations in ways opposite of what we expect that breaks the norms that we are used to and that is one of the basics of comedy...oh no now I'm the one over analyzing things No but, that's the thing: it tries to hard to be absurd, that any form of relatability is destroyed, and a teenage girl taking dolls that seriously...wtf? I laughed my ass off when a pig appeared in a toilet in Jojo, because to a degree, it makes sense, while being completely unexepcted. I laughed whenever Kazuma treats his party like shit...because while all their personalities are exaggerated, they're believable in context, and grounded enough to be somewhat relatable. There are people who are assholes to their teamates because they can't stand them. There are 14 year old girls trying to be, "cool". There are masochists. There are self-centered spoiled morons like Aqua. There is almost no teenager who screams over a doll like that. Would you find it funny if in any comedy, an old man just starts screaming over candy out of nowhere? Doesn't the image make you think, "yeah, maybe this is trying too hard?" Summary: The doll scene tries so hard to be funny, it made me cringe beyond words. Yeah, I personally found it funny myself, but this anime is really a hit or miss kind of anime. A lot of people will find it funny, but a lot of people are probably gonna think it's trying way too hard to be funny. That's what infuriates me about this anime: it actually has elements of brilliance. The main male lead being smart and beating up the girl (for good reason too) The way how the girls are perverted. When the next scene opened up in a setting with a sign, "Beware of perverts", I screamed from laughter, because that's a legit thing in Japan: http://gakuu.com/beware-of-perverts/ http://howibecametexan.com/2013/08/29/things-i-hate-about-japan-chikan-perverts/ https://www.zazzle.com/beware_of_perverts_actual_japanese_sign_t_shirt-235724472196030117 |

WILL YOU STOP WHINING!? No I don't understand! You snap at people, you're scary, you tried to eat me, but you're also kind and you're filled with life! You gave me a name when I was a number, you gave me that compass, you taught me what it means to be alive! That's why I care about you Velvet! I'll protect you for my own sake. I don't care if you're malevolent, or if it was pointless! If it's a mistake to love you, then I"ll fight the whole world! A world without you, Velvet, is the one thing I couldn't bear! Eat my arm, just leave me the other one! I need it to clobber the jerk who made my Velvet cry! -Laphicet, Tales of Berseria |

Great Episode... Did I just see Initial D (Dog) and Jojo references here? lol... also tbh that ear-piercing scene was kind of intense for me. Also that battle scene in the end is 10/10 |

Opening was the best part of the episode. And now that I think about it, probably the only one. Mountain racing was bad, dolls were meh, panty stealing was bad, piercing ear was meh. Probably the worst episode so far. |

The playground gang displayed the proper way to utilise dolls. It was an exceedingly intense game. Of course, Yoshiko's face-off with the motorcyclist was exciting as well. In a peculiar way. Fuuki Iinchou and Yoshiko's mother were quite a match too... |

Summary: The doll scene tries so hard to be funny, it made me cringe beyond words. I'm not too sure I agree with you in the slightest. Even your argumentation isn't consistent. Yoshiko is a character that has been excitable over the most mundane of situations and finds joy in blowing them out of proportion (buying candy, dog relationshps, etc...) while similarly ignoring or not caring about the things that are supposed to be important (like studies, etc...). On that level, it fits perfectly in context and in character. It's not about trying too hard, it's more to do with your incompatibility with that scene for whatever reason. If you want to use the relatability argument, were you really able to relate to riding a dog at a 100 miles an hour and stealing panties at superhuman speeds? Arguably, the doll scene was the most relatable out of the entire bunch. (O.o) Not to mention, the scene was brilliant for mixing genre tropes and playing around with storytelling conventions, poking fun at arbitrary plot developments, fan service and social conventions. |

Never had I expected this show will make references to Initial D and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure...in one episode. Shit, I was legit happy they did the Initial D-style intermission. xD Yeah, this is quite an intense episode, especially with the VA's going at the top of their lungs to do those particular scenes, particularly the Micca part which I think Aoi Yuuki did a great job on that. |

This episode was perfect. From the A-kun body pillow, to the ear piercing, Intial D with a dog, Micca's story, and the face off with the mom. Everything hit the right notes. The gal girl keeps getting cuter and cuter I swear, and Yoshiko's antics make it even better. The Initial D scene with the dog was great, loved the moving manga panels. Yoshiko doing nothing but laughing was hilarious. The Micca scene goes to show how great Yoshiko's imagination is. I was close to tears on this one. God, I love the mother. She's so ridiculous. This episode was an easy 10. |

The issue is that you're placing them on a hierarchy and thinking in binaries. If you prefer one over the other, fine, but in actual fact, one comedy is not "smarter" than the other, they're just different. By applying value judgment to the content you watch, you come off as being condescending and it adds nothing of value to the discourse. In fact, you silence it. The humor in Aho Girl stems from the fact that it's nearly impossible for such a character to exist. We as viewers cannot conceive HOW such a character came to be (and made it to where she is) and that is a joke in and of itself. In fact, I'd argue that the character would be ruined if her origins were explained in detail as no matter what explanation they come up with, simple or convoluted, it's not going to be enough. Not everything needs an explanation, and certain elements of storytelling are better left up to the imagination. Why is she acting like this? Because that's who she is. If you don't like her for who she is, then maybe you should move on. (Protip for life as well.) Also... a "grown woman"? Dude, she's like 17? Heck, even I still act like her sometimes because, hey, I actually enjoy life. Embracing hypobole and acting like an idiot to draw people's attention to how silly certain social conventions are? Now that's relatable (for me). |

Now that's relatable (for me). Sigh. I'm not trying to be condescending, but your entire post is the perfect example of a strawman. "By applying value judgment to the content you watch, you come off as being condescending and it adds nothing of value to the discourse. In fact, you silence it." No, I am not. I am simply stating my opinion in a critical manner (at least attempting to) while mixing in my personnel feelings. I'm not silencing anything, either. "The humor in Aho Girl stems from the fact that it's nearly impossible for such a character to exist" That's exactly my problem with this anime--it is so nearly impossible, it barely has any ground in reality. Hell, even something insane like Prison School and Shimoneta, are a lot more grounded. At least in those anime characters aren't constantly screaming at everything, and actually have some level of subtletey (at least compared to Aho Girl...) "Not everything needs an explanation, and certain elements of storytelling are better left up to the imagination" Where in any of my posts have I ever mentioned anything about a character having to be explained, as to how they act? I don't care about the, "origins" of a comedy character needing to be explained, I care about them being funny. In fact, if I watched Aho Girl with literally every scene with Yoshiko in it cut out, it'd actually be funny, instead of being 95% cringe, and 5% brilliant. Yes, to a degree, many people in real life do act like morons to draw attention (especially in high school...shudder), but THIS? Comparing a real-life screaming idiot to Aho Girl is like comparing a somewhat angry person to a 20 year old throwing a 6 hour tantrum in their room higher than concert music. Why am I still watching this shitty anime? Because I started, and might as well finish it. It's half an episode's length anyway. I don't understand at all why people find this anime actually funny, unless they're 10 or below. I don't understand how seeing a 17 year old (which is nearly adult age anyways) screaming over candy and toys is supposed to be, "funny". |

Not 100% grounded in reality, but to a decent degree. It makes perfect sense why a group of guys would attempt to peak at the girls in the bath. It makes sense why authoritarian girls would hate said guys. No episode of Prison School consists of just constant screaming. There are "chill" moments, as I'd like to call, so the characters feel SOMEWHAT, grounded. In Aho Girl, literally every single scene is trying to hammer a joke, rather than focus on anything else in-between. So much unfunny comedy just ends up kind of tiring me. Good week, crazier than usual ThatCynicalOtaku said: I'm absolutely serious when I mentioned the age thing, which shouldn't be strange--people's sense of humour greatly changes as they grow older. When I was a kid, I thought My Bride is a Mermaid was the most hilarious thing in the world. Now, I'm nearly an adult, and I just think it's a bit obnoxious and annoying. You'll have a hard time converting anybody to your notion that Aho Girl can't be funny for adults with your personal account of amusement. |

I'm not saying that Aho Girl CAN'T be funny for adults, that statement is literally objectively false. I'm saying that I don't UNDERSTAND, why adults would find it funny. To me, Aho Girl is what cheap fart jokes are to kids, if that comparison makes ense. |

BlackstarFallen said: Got to love those Initial D references used in comedy series. Makes you wonder what other references you miss throughout a series. The pantsu battle was likely a DBZ reference. On a side note, Iinchou only needed to ask one question to defend herself: "How would you know?" to Yoshiko's mother. No normal person would know and tell someone else that they know an exhibitionist. It's taking it too far to even go to the lengths of showing as well. Of course, Iinchou could've lied and said she doesn't do it by choice.... Yoshiko riding on the dog and racing the motorcycle was great. There was an Initial D reference. The doll drama was hilarious, but Iinchou vs Yoshiko's mother was even better. Poor Ruri. Her panties were taken. |

Then let's say, you'll have a hard time converting anybody to your notion that Aho Girl shouldn't be funny for adults with your personal account of amusement. Cos at least you come off as saying so. Anyway, I do find quite a percentage of the show pretty funny, and I'm an adult so there ya go. |

Well, I will say this: if you find this anime actually funny, I think your tastes in humor a extremely low. I don't mean that in a way where I'm trying to attack you, but to me, this anime is the equivalent of a 6 year old farting and thinking its funny. |

You may not mean it but you are in effect attacking me though, that's a near insult. No problem for me but this is a pointless debate, since it's difficult to back up arguments for and against 'this is funny'. Then you might as well not try to make an argument out of nowhere by putting down other's opinions(#42) and just say this is so shit and trying too hard, as nobody would and should have cared in that case. |

That playground scene had me in stitches, I laughed so hard. That little girl is the best character by far in my opinion, shes so adorable. Also, poor Ruri-chan, having to deal with both getting 0s on tests and all the people around her XD |

This episode's opening was funny. Dat Akkun dakimakura. :3 The pink haired gyaru was very cute again. Poor girl is lonely and desperate, though. I really liked the Initial D parody. It's a classic in comedy anime. Iinchou vs Yoshiko's mom was actually a pretty intense battle! These two are crazy on the same level. lol Top 10 anime fight right there. (Ruri's pantsu were stolen. omg) |
