This episode was definitely a step up for me. I have problems with the MC but he does have some quirks that stop him from being 100% generic. I like Uehara more as far as male characters go so far though. This show isn't super unique or anything but the cast seems likable enough overall and the game focus seems fun so fuck it I'll continue this.

While the characters still leave much to be desired, I appreciate how little exposition was used to display simple details and backgrounds. Usually shows like this go into long 2-3 episode arcs about how their pasts haunt them or spend too long trying to resolve simple misunderstandings. But they were able to convey a fair amount without having to say a lot and without overloading unneeded exposition. Nice gag with Amano nearly forcing Uehara off the bridge, it catches you by surprise given the difference in their height and builds. Tendou's dopiness kinda came outta nowhere given how she acted all through episode 1, but it was still pretty funny. Hopefully they'll start explaining more on what the characters will actually be doing in this show rather than just introducing and building upon them.

If this episode accomplished anything it would be that Tasuku would have been a much better main character than Keita. The former is just continuing to establish himself as that mediocre (or borderline unlikeable) main character that everyone seems to care for (Tasuku's interest, Karen's affection, etc.) with no apparent reason. It doesn't help, too, that Keita is continuing to be a dick towards Karen, especially while she's engaging in this unwarranted "obsession" that's watering her character down a bit.

The lessened focus on the actual "gaming" part of the series was a bit disappointing, though the adventures at the arcade were fun. I could really do without all this melodrama in-between (such as the scene between Tasuku and Keita on the bridge, literally skipped most of that). I'd really like to get back to the club or some sort of situation where they're all playing together.

On another note, the opening and the ending were quite nice, more so visually than in terms of the themes. I'm a sucker for well-executed game references, and they managed them quite well.

I'm going to try and remain hopeful for a better episode three, but since the ending of the first one everything seems to be heading in either an average or disappointing direction.

Pretty fun episode and better than the first one.

Fangirl/Stalker Tendou was amusing.

And obviously the best part was when Uehara learned that Aguri liked him since middle school. That moment was so sweet!

Nice episode! I wish there are more games appear in the upcoming episodes other than sponsors of this show. Honestly, it is nice to see your favorite games in anime, lol. Arcsys always earns my respect. :D

Drama and Comedy really hit the spot, so right! More I think and listen OP it's catchy af tho. xD

I really like this anime so far! It's funny, cute and have tons of game refrences. Yes the main MC can be a bit annoying but that will be part of his character growth. Look a Tsuna from KHR (Reborn) for example, he was a scared boy who didn't want to do anything but turned out to be really badass at the end of the anime even though his personality didn't change much.

Tendou is sweet, a bit cliche but cliche can be good if it's done well. Her crush on Amano is funny.

Finally. I was waiting for a comment like this. I'm starting to think nobody play games here at MAL...

Though "your regular visual novel" I'm pretty sure is a Tokimeki Memorial parody (most famous VN back in the 90s in Japan). And the "Guitar Hero" parody is actually a japanese rythm game which title escapes me right now, might be Beatmania, not sure.

So many quality reference, and they didn't even hold back on the Persona game.

Uehara isn't exactly an original archetype either. You just like him because he looks like a "Chad" (which is hilarious because he doesn't act like one.)

And Amano actually stands up for his passion. Did you forget him defending Tendou and the club after Uehara talks shit about them?
I didn't say Uehara is original. He's just done well enough for it to not be a major problem. No idea what Chad you're talking about.

Amano's actions at the catwalk only exemplified how utterly dull and annoying his character is. He has no reason to vehemently defend that club. He's supposed to be passionate about games in a cowardly way but there's nothing to make him passionate about club he doesn't even find interesting enough to join. It was only a lazy writing excuse for Tendou to hear that and fall for him. Otherwise there would be no reason for her to like him. There's still none but at least now plot got a poor excuse to ship them together.

It actually brings to my mind a thought from some Witcher 3 review I've stumbled upon recently. One of the reasons people prise its writing is because it gives the feeling that characters were written first and then creators thought about how they would act in gives circumstances according to their personalities, experiences etc. One of the reasons why so many other games and most anime nowadays fall flat (to put it very nicely) is because characters are written to fit the plot decided beforehand.

And its painfully apparent here to the point of being annoying.

Chad is just a nickname for a normie which Uehara what he was trying hard to be, but is actually not and is unhappy with what he's become.

You're already locked into your opinion about Amano just because he made a bad impression to you that no matter what he does, despite showing that he does have more to him than just being a wimp, you're going to write it off as "bad writing" or some other cop out reasoning.

And comparing a video game to an anime makes no sense since the former you have full control over the characters while the latter doesn't and you're just watching what the creator wants to show.
I wish Cowboy Bebop never existed.

Was Tales of Phantasia + random brawler character (That game was called Paradigm of Phantasia during the episode).
Tendou was cosplaying Mint, Amano Cless and another girl Arche.

Putting aside that it's heavily story driven I mentioned the game because it was an example of good writing. Basically first characters, then story. I'm not locked in anything. I was actually pleasantly surprised when MC refused to join the club in the first episode and I was hoping it will lead to some interesting development. Sadly this episode killed that hope.

So Persona 4 direct representation ftw!

Anyways, this was a vast improvement over the pilot episode. With the "drama" that unfolded in the episode, I'm just gonna be that guy and say I can honestly identify with the MC. Sure he may be weak and softspoken but to me, this episode showed a bit why he is the way he is. Sure it may not have been like directly in front of us with an explanation but the indirectness with the whole classmates talking shit about him, how Uehara was used as like a comparison to him and then that bridge scene? Yeah, I can see this. Now as for the whole Tendou fangirling part, that's gonna take a bit of convincing for me to see how they plan to pair her with the MC because honestly I don't see it. All I see is a girl wanting some gamer kid to join her club and there's a vibe for like some ulterior motive in my eyes. All in all, I'm content with this episode and I don't think I'll be dropping it.
Don't believe the hype.

Wow...another solid episode. I'm starting to feel bad that I wasn't originally planning on checking this out, because it's been a blast so far. I still like the MC and didn't mind the voice acting this time around and now that he has a friend things will be better for him. He just needed someone who can challenge him without any pressure. I'm excited to see his budding bromance with Uehara.

Speaking of Uehara, he was great in this episode. That bridge scene was hilarious and I loved that he's falling for his girlfriend. He tried so hard to change himself, when there was someone who already loved him for him. I'm curious to see how their dynamic changes now that he knows.

Tendou falling in love is fine. As long as she doesn't become like Anna, then it should be fun to watch. She's going to have competition soon though.

I rarely comment this early in the series but I just had to now after seeing the second episode. My opinion is probably completely biased though - I am both a gamer and a romcom fan and so this series' setting kills it for me on its own. But going even beyond that, I sympathise with Amano a lot since I, too, play games mostly out of passion and despite going at it since I was 6 years old I am terribly bad at most of them lol.

Having that out of the way... I don't really think that Amano's character is that much of a complete cliche - he does stand up to his passion, he refused to join the club and turned down Tendou. He seemed almost crazy to me at times, which is probably a way to represent his social awkwardness. And even if he IS cliche (and the entire show for that matter) then it is the best damn cliche I've seen in a while and there is nothing wrong with it in my opinion. I just see it as a genre following its set of rules and what decides whether the show ends up being good or not is how well those rules are executed rather than the rules themselves. I am watching a romcom for a reason after all and while surprises are always nice and cherished, a good execution of a tried pattern is just as good in my book.

As for Tendou and why she seemingly fallen for Amano without any good reason, I think we just have yet to learn and that's it. She approached him because she noticed his passion in the first place, so there is that. If not, there is always the cliche of some kind of developments in the past (obviously forgotten by Amano). And even in just those two episodes - the school queen that is secretly (?) a huge geek gets turned down by a nobody that manages to lead her by her nose and stands true to his convictions. She hates to lose (since she is a hardcore gamer) so her interest is picked here already. The bridge scene was just the icing on the cake.

All the random rambling and show fanboing aside, there was so much goodness in this episode I couldn't stop grinning and rewatching the best scenes. And that killer endcard, oh boi.

Good episode. I like how the series is both cliché but not cliché at the same time, if you get what I mean, like how they use the hot-girl-liking-average-guy cliché for comedy purposes. The comedy is actually pretty good, sometimes it just doesn't work, but here it is executed pretty well.

I'm liking how the focus is not limited to the MC and Main Girl, also, and is the new girl at the end of the episode the third girl we see in the OP? I am eager to see. :)

Nevermind the fact that the Witcher series appeals to a different demographic and is also not completely free of cliches, it's unfair to compare a series that has been in the works for about a decade to a LN series that only started publication two years ago. The scale is just way out there.

He still keeps knocking down the expected flags (up to the latest volume, he still refuses to join the club). Do you expect him to just lie on the ground and take what Uehara was spouting out of his mouth?

Right when Tasuku was introduced I liked him. But then he started having really shallow thoughts and I decided i wasn't going to like him.

Then this episode comes along and shows me that my gut feeling was right. He was just putting on a show. He's actually a good guy.

And Amano is such a cutie.

Why the hell does Tendou have a crush on him now tho? Because she got rejected? xD Girl wants what she can't have.

that blonde chick thats part of the group of friends tho...where the hell did she get the he's so stuck up? If anyone is stuck up it's you assholes who judge the class loner just because he's not into the same shit as you. Then you talk bad about him while he's in the room. That's called bullying bitch.

i don't too, why we must hate someone that stay in his passion? he loves to play games, but the reason he doesn't want to do something like a competitive or competition because he's afraid it will ruin his fun. Most people hates him maybe because he isn't cliche and not really stand out like every MC did (overpowered, talkative, heroism, cool af, etc), and yeah because Uehara stole this episode, that's why people keep getting annoyed by him, also his story or his past isn't still revealed that much so far so we can expect more development later...

As a LN reader i cant not be disappointed at the amount of dialogues skipped. And i wish we'd have at least a little Uehara monologues to find out how he feels more. We skipped ant grasshopper dialogue which was so signature for that chapter.

Regardless a good episode from anime standards. OP is great :D

Endcard boysssss

Well the chapter is just that long so turning it into 24 minute is high hurdle. Still it would be nice if they show Keita before the Tendou incident in Tasuku eyes because then we can see that even if he is loner the time when he play game is the happiest time in his life.

Side note I'm hoping to see some crossover fanart about Gamers and New Game in the near future.

Because they're all beloved franchises with history. PUBG just got there because of its status as a meme game.

I honestly don't know why you're complaining about this unless you just want everything they reference to be new for whatever reason.
?
you are the one complaining, i was responding to your complaining and then you complain about my respond again

I was calling you out on your complaint. Take a few steps back to the conversation, cat.
I wish Cowboy Bebop never existed.

DAMN I LOVED THE ANIME BECAUSE AT FIRST EP, I THOUGHT IT'S ONLY GONNA BE PURE GAME REFERENCES + COMEDY + ROMANCE.

and then after this second episode, I LOVE IT A HUNDRED TIMES MORE

An overall good episode. I really found the comedy enjoyable. And I was not expecting Tendou to fall for MC.

I guess I'm one of the few who actually like this MC; other than him talking down about himself, of course. He's straightforward and doesn't take slander against others, which I think matches well with his other weak points.

Am I the only one who doesn't find the MC annoying?

Duh, I know I'm not the ONLY one but still, the hate is strong with this one.

That Persona 4 Arena tho XD
I wonder how much they're paying for all those references.

Nah you're not alone. I don't think the MC is annoying either. Maybe because I've already seen too many annoying MC.

Other than that..
Good episode. Really enjoy this anime as a fellow gamer too :D

When you play games as much as Amano for as long as he has and still suck... just the thought of that tilts me. If you even relate to him a little, please do not play ranked in any game. Tryhards are wonderful people, please respect them just as you would with your own mother

Honestly i haven't been so annoyed with a character since IS the main really needs a good punch to the face he is way to passive and his personality is so weak.
The other guy isn't that interesting either but at least he is more straightforward and he is a nice guy despite his tough guy act.
That being said this anime didn't really show anything that stands out so for the characters seem copy paste characters and the events are predictable.

At least the MC is stupid enough to have some spark of personality.

I'm happy this is a romantic comedy than anything, if Karen hadn't shown obvious feelings towards Keita not much in this show would be fun.

Not great by any means but a really cute episode. I'm glad Tasuku's starting to see that he can just be himself.
