It was announced that mangaka Jiro Taniguchi died today at the age of 69. The funeral will only be held among his family.

Born in Tottori, Taniguchi debuted with Kareta Heya under Shounen Gahousha's monthly Young Comic magazine. He was popular for publishing Kodoku no Gourmet, which was made into numerous live action TV series and TV specials. He won the 1998 Osamu Tezuka Culture Award by illustrating the trilogy Bocchan no Jidai, which was written by Natsuo Sekikawa. He also won the Shogakukan Manga Award in 1992 with short story collection titled Inu wo Kau. In 2002 and 2005, he also received an award at the Angoulême International Comics Festival.

This really hits hard. Taniguchi was one of my favourite mangaka, with Summit of the Gods and Harkuana Machi E being one of my favourite manga of all time. He was a magnificient artist that had the gift to vividly portray nostalgia, wanderlust and many other difficult to nail parts of our life in a very clear manner.

He will be missed, my thoughts go to his family :(

I've read few of his works years ago and enjoyed them (Chichi no Koyomi probably my favourite), always wanted to read more of him but never did. I also missed the chance to see him live at a convention, and now i regret that even more.

Rip.

Oh man, I've only read one of his works but it's not the kind of thing you can forget. There was something quite humble how he would try to reach the ineffable through sobriety. You could tell he was a decent bloke, I'll miss him. Rest in peace.

RIP. Really a shame, and quite shocking because he wasn't that old at all.

I haven't read any of him yet but after this I'm going to read My Father's Journal. It's a pity that this is which has encouraged me to do it, but I've been ages wanting to read this man's works.

Now that's a big news I wasn't expecting at all, it's shocking me a little right now, to be honest..
I always thought he would be the type of person that live very long while never giving up manga until the end...
I wasn't his biggest fan, but he was definitly a very important and talented author, and this will leave a big hole for many people.
He was especialy appreciated and known in France, so I expect to ear and see things about him very soon, in TV program and such.

Some of his manga were published in my country, although I've never gotten chance to read any of them. It's a big loss, people in his comics looked like actual people, not some giant eyed moe creatures. May he rest in peace.

I really wasn't expecting this. This is a huge loss.
Great Art for mangas such as Kamigami no Itadaki or Kodoku no Gourmet - but also amazing Story & Art such as in Kami no Inu.
Rest in Peace.

He was extremely appreciated and respected by comic connoisseurs for his work.
I remember that my town held expositions about his work a few years back, and he personally came. Didn't meet him though, heard about it after it was already finished.

I don't really know his work, but great great artist from what I heard.

Wow, this caught me off-guard..
Rest in peace, Taniguchi ;_;. An absolute legend and one of my favorite mangaka. Works like Haruka na Machi e and Aruku Hito are some of my favorites and I advise everyone to read his stuff, specially if you love the Slice of Life genre.
