A very convincing isekai story, that simply gets more and more interesting the more volumes passes. One part of its success for me is how good character banters are, and how every single character becomes interesting a while after being introduced.

Strong points : Mysteries very well done, Scenario (by arc as well as the general story), Main characters, high paced fights, Ambiance, fast paced story telling which doesn't even let you catch your breath; twisted developments and magnificent bastards as enemies.

Strong points : Plot by arc, Main Characters, World Building, Dialogues.
Weak points : -
Author : Hasekura Isuna
-The main couple is really likable and their relationship is cute as well as interesting
-the way used by the author to write the novels is really fitting and really well done. Writing at the first person from 2 different point view (tokiya and someone else, usually that chapter's "culprit/antagonist") which alternates every few pages makes for a very dynamic story telling. Seeing the antagonist's thoughts right from the start easily hook you in, and the author is really good at making you think that the characters said things that they actually didn't said, tricking the readers into thinking that they got the answer of the chapter's main enigma whereas it was just a trap by the author. I really enjoy this kind of things, so I was really pleased by most of the chapters' conclusion.
-The fact that among the 4 chapters of each volume, the last one is always dedicated to the relationship of the main couple (in the fourth chapters, those "dual Point of view" are always Saki/Tokiya) is really helping this couple to be likable. Seeing as Saki doesn't show her emotions and isn't very talkative, the fact that in every volume one chapter is written with Saki's feeling and point of view was a good choice. Without this, it would have been really hard to take interest in Saki. But thanks to this, it's easy to take interest in her feelings. Plus, those last chapters are usually really funny (except for the last two books, but this had to be expected, alright).
-The stories are quite cruel, as the author doesn't spare his characters. Being involved with "Antiques" usually lead to the peoples downfall, or to the downfall of the peoples around him/her.
Deaths of the main character of the chapter, death of his/her loved one, sometimes even fate that could easily be considered worse than death, characters who lose what they desperately wanted to obtain, characters who lose EVERYTHING but what they obtained, characters being put in situations where every single choices can only lead to bad endings... If you consider that we quite often get to see those peoples' feeling during the whole chapter, including when their downfall happen, we're definitely not in your every day pink-colored LN story here.

Another series from Nanasawa Matari that happens in the same world as the previous one, and another nice fantasy story exploring the consequences of having an overpowered female protagonist. Overall story is not as interesting as the previous two, but the protagonist herself is more complex and nuanced, making her more interesting on the long run. To be read after the other two.

opinion more in detail :
Horizon... It's difficult to describe. The first thing to know I think, is that it's difficult to start, but actually very addictive after a while.
It's difficult to start due to the sheer amount of description. The world is very complex, and seems at first completely illogical by the amount of stuff that don't seem to go well together. The author actually manages to explain everything so that it goes together, which is awesome and makes for the most impressive world building I've ever seen; but on the other hand, the amount of explanation needed to reach that is very heavy.
What's worse at the beginning is that we don't know anything yet, we aren't accustomed to that strange world and we're thrown quite "quickly" (meaning after a few hundred pages lol) in the heart of very important events. Problem is, to understand the implications of all that and why this is happening, we need to know stuff that we don't know yet. In order to avoid discouraging the reader, the author made the logical choice to start on those events before explaining fully, but it means that we're a bit lost. Add to that a really huge cast of character right from the start (and that will continues to grows at a good pace until the 4rth arc after which most of the cast is introduced)
That's why it's difficult to start. Now the thing is, just like baccano, there is no real main character. There is however a "main side". The author follows everyone, making them the main character when needed. This means that that huge cast, both enemies and allies, is developed properly. And is likable. There is no Manichean character in there. The "Enemies" fight for the good of their own country, for the people they love, for their friend, for what they believe in, exactly like the "main side" does. Lots of them have their own humor, and even their own running gag; they may be implacable enemies on the battlefield or during negotiation, but it won't stop them from being very good guys doing charity deeds and so on.
That's the first reason it's addictive. No matter your taste, you're sure to find characters you appreciate in there.
Same goes with romance; Rather than one, there is countless romances being developed. big age gap, same sex, little harem, one sided loves, nymphomaniac couple, SM couple, love that transcended death, you name it, KyouHora probably has it. And those couples can be both on the main side or the enemy/neutral/ally side as well. Their development is interesting as well.
But KyouHOra, that's a huge content of explanation and very complex god power/technology/history/economy/races and tribes relationship used to its fullest to make
-Very impressive strategies during battles; and very epic battles with colossal city ships that are several km longs, dragons that are more than one hundred meter long, and so on). Some strategists in there are freaking monsters in the way they use the troops they have to their fullest and think out the box to counter the enemy strategies.
-very impressive strategies and well thought use of specific powers during individual battles. The world of KyouHora has heroes that can make a huge difference on the whole battle with their power, and lot of them are seriously smart/inventive .
-Absolutely awesome political and/or economical negotiations. I said before that the explanations were huge, right? Well, the thing is, those explanations are not only needed, they're used smartly afterward during that kind of negotiation. A single small thing in the hands of those negotiators can turn into a trump card that may completely change who will have the edge on a following battle for example. In KyouHora, political negotiation is something to enjoy, and something that you'll have a lot.
I mentioned it a bit before, but KyouHora has a completely epic scale for a lot of stuff. The ship of the main side is 8km long with dozen of thousands of inhabitants living on it, like a real city with its schools, its gardens and paddy fields inside it. It has countless races living together, with their own problems. Werewolves, werefoxes, dragons (and several very different type of them), elves, archdaemons, incubus, living deads, undeads, tree spirits, fallen angels, and I could go for a very long time like this. There are proper reasons for our world to have become like this (although they are mostly explained in the prequel) btw. Normal humans can go toes to toes to them by having received the proper powers from the god they worship and enough training; so the battles are very different. You can have a footman fighting a 20m tall God of War (think: mecha), witches riding a mechanical broom to fight a hundred meter long dragon in the sky, werewolves throwing gigantic boulders on a ship, and I could go on like forever.
But also, KyouHora has a very well done plot. After the first 2 arcs which are basically the introduction, it's very difficult to not keep being surprised by the scenario. Like I said before, negotiator surprise us by their use of everything and the way they can change everything that seemed settled in a few words, but strategists are also really good at this, and country leaders brings several plot twists that completely change everything as well. Managing to guess properly how an arc will end while you've only read half of it is almost impossible.
Well, that was long. I could go for a while.
A tl;dr version would be : if long description don't frighten you, KyouHora has a lot of exceptional qualities to offer and a massive content and very diverse cast to keep you entertained and hooked all along.
PS : And don't judge that book by its covers or the character design made by the illustrator. While that title has ecchi scenes, it's only a small part of the title. KyouHora sells for 35-40k /volume, which is 4 times more than most LN, even though it's difficult to start and its length is already frightening. That's because peoples who read it don't want to stop afterward x).

Very unequal in its quality, but it's fast and easy to read, which allows to pass the duller parts without having really the time to be annoyed/bored by it. If you just read the first volume or just watched the anime and stopped there thinking you've seen enough to judge/saw what was to be seen, you're wrong. A very enjoyable mahou shoujo series. Lots of cool and enjoyable characters, very brutal and quick paced fights with lots of originality, and an interesting setting to explore. if you enjoy dark mahou shoujo, definitely don't miss that one.

A very satisfying traditional fantasy story, that would get a 8 easily if not for its ending that feels like it's closed prematurely (was the series canceled?) compared to what felt to me like a longer intended plot. Still, very likable characters, cool battles, nice world building. Nothing ground breaking, but no real flaws either. Traditional fantasy, but well handled traditional fantasy.

Murder parties between absolutely batshit crazy characters. It's enjoyable. The mystery part though, is sub par at best. More often than not, the author use cheap tricks that are usually listed as "DO NOT" in any list of golden rules for mystery/detective stories. It's still fine because a good part of the charm from this books comes from how over the top every single character in there is. But then, just don't do a mystery novel at all, as that would have been more enjoyable to me than those very cheap tricks that let you at the end of almost each volume with the feeling that the author is not playing fair with its readers at all.

Aaaah this one. Could have -and already have- ranted a very long time, I guess. It has some qualities, which is why I still put it at 7, but if I only listened to my anger about its flaws, it would be quite lower rated than 7 (and that would be unjust, but heh). Absolutely impossible to keep your suspension of disbelief, as the author didn't study AT ALL any of the subjects he's talking about. Space, physics, politics and the worse of them all, military tactics and strategies. Not a single god damn strategy in 3800 pages is even close of "working". I want to be lenient, but in that precise case, the absolutely infuriating - and over the top- "full of its self importance" type of tone that those books have from start to finish just doesn't allow it. If you're going to write a low-level space opera, then write it as one. N?ot as some alternate history's History book or something. "Indigestible", to remain polite about it.

Only read if you're okay with having 50-100 pages in a row with just a witty conversations between half naked characters about underwear's colour. For me that was just too much and it went from amusing to simple overdose. Very nice way to write though, full of play on words.
Read : 12/12 first series 8/8 (Hiatus) Last Embryo
Strong points : World building, cool characters, strategies and enigmas well done.
Weak points : Authors tries to put too much stuff in a single volume resulting in descriptions too incomplete to visualize properly, and not enough characters development/depth. This however is mostly solved when the author doesn't try to close the story arc in a single volume, and since the author hasn't written a single one volume long story arc since volume 2, that weak point is basically currently as good as gone.

A must read if you've watched the related anime series, as it was written as a complementary to it, to be read chapter per chapter with each episodes. That author's writing style is weak and extremely repetitive with her use of cheap tricks to avoid bothering with complex matters. I'm sorry, but if it wasn't repetitive I would be ok with it, but across the 26 volumes I've read, it just happens so much that I can predict they're going to be used as the tool used are basically carbon copies of each other. Rant about it :
I almost gave it a 3/10, if not for the saving grace that were the last 60 pages of the last volume, so 4/10. I would have liked the story to be more like this end, giving regularly that kind of feelings to the reader, rather than the feeling of being offend all the time. Yes, offended.
Every volume kept offending me more and more by throwing to my face more awful stuff done by the characters that are never punished, and are even understood and forgiven by others.
Seriously, how worse can it get.
Pedophilia, Adultery, Incest, murders and attempted murders, attempted rape, heavy blackmail, drug dealing, kidnapping, and so on. And as I said, not a single person was punished by the law. The worst someone got was a punch in the face.
Worse even, the two peoples who received the most punishment (at least two punches or kick) are the two males that were CLEAN. All the characters that did awful things got out with less than them. Talk about being completely ridiculous.
After that, everyone forgive everyone and they even are friend. "Hey, you purposely tortured me mentally for weeks, you tried to kill me and almost managed to, tried to kill me as well as kidnapped a child and tried to kill her, but let's forgot about that, we're good friend, aren't we?
And also, when a 22 years old woman fuck a 12 years old boy, that's called pedophilia. To think that no a single person from start to finish pointed out that fact (they were concerned by other problems caused by the fact that they had sex together, which were indeed heavy problem, but damn, the worse here was definitely pedophilia, and not a single character pointed it out...)
What the hell was that...
And also, the author used two times several of the huge plot tricks in the story (MPD, characters convincing themselves that something that didn't happen actually happened or the contrary, and so on...). The second time was completely obvious for each repeated trick. That was very NOT convincing that way(Are you serous? How many of the characters had very serious mental problems here?) , and extremely disappointing. Author was also unable in TEN volumes to provide me with more than a few proper romantic discussion, because of the repeated use (ad nauseam) of the same trick to avoid doing them : every time the discussion become a bit serious, they are interrupted by a phone call, by a mail, by someone coming in.
A ten volume romance story with almost no proper romance talk between characters, I'd say that this show that the author was unable to make the romance last this long without doing this over and over again to artificially stall the romance progression. And that, that, was very obvious, and very annoying.
Everything was over-exaggerated, like the girls all over Hikaru and forgiving everything just because of his face and his gentle attitude, the over reactions toward Koremitsu's face, the "weird nose" of Beni, the ability for those with money to go unpunished whatever they do, and so on. The author didn't know during the whole series the word "nuanced". Which lead to completely ridiculous reactions from characters, who are completely unbelievable and mostly unlikable, and a non-working suspension of disbelief during most of the plot.
I agree. It feels like drama for dramas sake when the entire point of the story and show are being taken out of context and forcefully drafted into a western narrative around gender identity and stereotypes. Which has become the new focus of some kind of ideological war being waged on the other side of the planet in recent years. I wish people would grow up and not get so bent out of shape just because magic happened in a story.
On another note, Rokka no Yuusha is one of my favorite LNs and just want to know if you think we're getting an ending? (Flemmy or Adlet a good match or a trap?)
Seems we are alike insofar as we won't be home at the time when it is most appropriate. I have to work on Christmas as well as juggle what little family I have left. Thanks for responding, it means more than you'd think to just have a Merry Christmas exchange with someone I've not been able to reply too since 2017.
