She is like a first year neophyte and the other tuba players are in their fifth year. I mean there's some people who can pick up stuff in a heartbeat. But no amount of prodigy skill can bring you up to speed in a few months compared to 5 years of solid practice and repetition. celeminus said: lol kyoani is trolling hard with the yuri bait just to crush everyones dreams when shuichi happens not cool yeah, it is getting over the top. Asuka is a bitch in this episode but I expect that from her. She loves music and nothing will get her way on her practice time. Maybe it's more than that. Maybe she was burned by love and music is her outlet. The previous episode she was all gung-ho for Hazuki at the festival. Maybe she felt bad about it. If you haven't noticed the characters are as simple and straight forward as they appear. --------------------------------- I feel bad for Natsuki. She really tried to win a spot. It's a shame. I think Natsuki knew she was in trouble when she saw how well Kumiko was picking up her parts just from viewing the music sheets. I worry that it might cause tension in the Bass room. --------------------------------- Reina is going to need a friend. Cause i got a bad feeling she's in for some serious hazing. I have friends who doesn't mind kissing one another on the lips in front of their hubbies. I once asked them "Do you really have to kiss one another every time you meet after a while?" the two girls almost simultaneously said "Yes. this is how we show our love for one another." and kissed again. We have been friends for many years now and they still do that when all of us meet after a while. And we all know that they are not attracted to same sex. Love doesn't need to be in the form of attracted to the sex. I once told one of my buddies how much I loved him. We shared 6 years of our high school/college lives and then 4 years in the university. I remember we hugged and cried in the day of our graduation because we were taking separate paths. My shoulder was soaked with his tears, his was with mine. We are perfectly straight. He is getting married soon and it hurts me because I won't be able to be there with him in one of the biggest moments in his life. Love can be of any form, and one of them is friendship. And if we fantasize Kumiko and Reina kissing for the attraction of the same sex, then be it. I will be hypocrite if I say that would absurd because it is not and it is just another form of love. |

Kyoani didn't cut ANY important scene with Shuichi, most of romantic development happens in second and third books. Anime only adapts first. Oh damn. Thanks. It means this is only one-cour. To be honest, I was slightly mad at Midori this episode. She should be the one cheering Hazuki up not the other way around! That was really just.... Hrnng. Was also pretty surprised that Natsuki didn't make it, especially after Kumiko thought she was Asuka for a moment. Stop baiting me! :( |

Natsuki and Hazuki didn't make it. She was going through those names so fast that it wasn't even that sad. Totally realistic actually. The girl who didn't start practicing until it was too late, and the girl who's only been playing Tuba for a month...had either of them actually made it I probably would've discredited any semblance of realism this show tried to have. Seems like quite a few people were not pleased that Reina got the solo parts. It's called being good. As someone who did orchestra many years ago during middle school I can relate to that. I was pretty damn good (not bragging, it's just to highlight part of the story; but I was always good with instruments) and a lot of the lazy or just not musically gifted students would complain when they were never recognized. I played cello, and although we never played any pieces with cello solos, we did play ones with violin solos. In every section; violin, viola, cello, there were clear differences between the good and the bad. When it came time to decide who was getting the violin solo, obviously the 1st and 2nd chairs were the only viable options. Everyone else was awful. The 1st chair girl got it, 2nd chair really didn't care either way. But one of the random violins started flipping out during practice and asking the teacher why the didn't get picked and started going on a rant. I was so dumbfounded and outraged that this kid had the balls to say something like that, I immediately got out of my chair, walked up and got in his face and yelled something along the lines of "maybe if you put in some goddamn effort to not sound like shit then you wouldn't have to worry about getting picked or not". I got yelled at for screaming at the kid, but he didn't say another word the rest of the year. He never really got better either...so it probably wasn't him taking my words to heart, he was probably just scared. Well lame story aside, the weeding out of the scrubs was really realistic, so that's good. Though, what is the purpose of this lady teacher?? She is literally just a really aggressive, salty cunt. She provides no benefit to the story, and doesn't know jack shit about music, yet she shows up at random times just to act like a fucking drill sergeant. I don't understand... |

Very good episode this week. I really enjoyed it and I'm happy that there was no tension between Kumiko and Hazuki. It just goes to show that Hazuki is a good girl. Kumiko is finally getting conscious of Shuuichi and this makes me so happy. I don't know why people find it forced. They're childhood friends, so it's kind of natural not to expect the other to have romantic feelings for you as you've been friends all this time. Kumiko realizing that Shuuichi likes her as more than a friend made her conscious of him and therefore starting to see him as a boy and not just a childhood friend. Is there anything wrong with that? Hazuki is more outspoken and straightforward, so I can see why people wanted her to get Shuuichi instead of Kumiko and this is fine. However, Episode 8 was enough evidence that he doesn't see her like that. He was even irritated when she interrupted his conversation with Kumiko. The thing is, I don't get why people are so surprised or ignore the hints that Shuuichi does like Kumiko and instead brush it off as a misunderstanding. Also, the fact that some people think that Shuuichi should end up with Hazuki. I admit I'd be disappointed if he did accept Hazuki's feelings but I wouldn't go and say that he should have ended up with Kumiko. |

shanimebib said: fatalystic said: RikkiP said: What more could she have done? Well, she could have started practising seriously from the get-go instead of bumming around till after Taki-sensei showed up. Unless Kumiko's fairly low self-esteem was causing her to perceive Natsuki as better than she really was, Natsuki's rate of progress is tremendous showing she does indeed have talent. If she had practised seriously right from the start, she would have been some serious competition to the more experienced Kumiko. Exactly. Even if you have talent, it is something that needs to be nourished. You keep it in a drawer and it starts getting rusty and then a point comes when you regret about it. Look at Reina for instance. She is not only talented. She actually tries her best to polish it further. The fruit is her getting the solo role. And then again, sometime no amount of effort is good enough when you face someone with talent who is serious about it. Kaori-senpai is an example of that. Her clenching the instrument as she saw Reina's back as she walked away was another example. No studio does it better than KyoAni, delivering emotional state of a character more from their gestures than their words. Yes delirium, because KyoAni ever used such a scene as bait in other anime Reina e Kumiko [/QUOTE] We had a same scene in Hyouka, exactly the same cut for the legs, between Chitanda and Fuyumi. The funny thing is that the same fans, always fall into the lures of KyoAni. |

Every 10 animes with feminas protagonists in 9 it follows the cliché route yuri / shoujo-ai and femina protaginista ends with another woman. Dude, please tell me all those animes. I'd love to watch them. I don't know if you are homophobic or have only watched shows that fall into the Class S - cute girls doing cute things - category, but real yuri is actually extremely uncommon in anime. Manga has a lot more, but real yuri anime is rare. The long, repetitive list you put out has several that just don't have any male characters and don't actually have ANY romance in them. You can't count those a yuri. The vast majority of shows with female protagonists are shoujo and feature heterosexual relationships exclusively with no yuri or yaoi at all. Regardless, I will continue shipping Kumiko and Reina. If the story ends with Kumiko dating Shuuichi I will reason it out as Kumiko's tendency to avoid confrontation leading her to take the easy route and deny her true feelings. After all, as long as she stays close to Reina, she can have all the joys of spending time with her and relying on her the way she is clearly beginning to now. She'll just have to put up with a boring life with a guy that she really does like, as a close friend. She is the type that can live without passion, I think, which is probably why she'll end up with mister boring. From what I've heard, she and Shuiichi are NOT dating at the end of the third novel. The most reliable reports I have read say that he was going to confess but lost his nerve and never did, though he did give her the hairpiece that has been mentioned. The blurb on the official web-site for the short story collection actually lists a short story where it is possible that Shuuichi confesses, but it has it with a question mark. Really, I will dislike the story if they don't do a good job of selling her actually falling for him. It is hard to go from "Wanna go to the festival with me?" "WHY????" to "I love this guy" without a whole lot of development... In any event, the relationship between Reina and Kumiko is obviously far more important to the story than any other relationship. I expect that it will be Kumiko's turn to support Reina soon, as Reina deals with jealousy and hate from the other trumpets and the third year trumpet players "fans". |

shanimebib said: curiousheathy said: That being said, I love the episodes that focus on the music. However, I am getting confused with the direction they are trying to go in. I love Kyoani a lot. I think about Free! and Hyouka and so on, and they had like two main plots: friendship and _____ (whatever the show was about). I feel that the music part is strong, but then the friendship part is a bit.... jumbled? I don't know, I mean I know other shows have a lot of sub plots, but I feel a bit confused as to what is trying to be developed. Perhaps it has to do with the sheer number of characters. For me, it's been difficult to keep track of the members outside of the few first years and an upperclassman or two. I don't know, I'm no critic, but it's just something I noticed. Overall, enjoyed the episode a lot. On the contrary, it is the sheer number of characters that makes this, along with Amagi (not as much, because the side characters had lesser roles) and Nichijou (one of KyoAni's best till date) a real treat for me. The uniqueness of all the side characters in this anime also show the author has the capacity of touching many general, yet different characteristics of individual characters. The novel is more straightforward compared to the anime counterpart and focuses more into music than relationships. However, in the anime, the friendship/romance may appear a bit jumbled up because it was intentionally done by KyoAni to add more spice to it. If for instance you can understand character A and character B and their relationship from the get go, then honestly, you are watching a B grade anime at best (if one of the main themes is romance) that doesn't make you think about the relationship or prospective alternatives. This anime has been an A so far for me. And if they can do it right until the end, I won't hesitate to list it as an A+ anime. Agreed, the large cast in this show, and the focus that each one is given, is a real treat to watch. Not only do we get the story for the mains, but we also delve gradually into relatively important support characters as well. The sisterly bond between the third year girls is a mature version of the bond amongst Kumiko, Midori and Hazuki (albeit not as fun). And whilst we catch glimpses of the relationships outside of these two main circles, they are done in a way that doesn't draw too much attention to them, and yet are still memorable when given the opportunity to recall. I'm so damn glad that they finally refocused on the more important aspect of this show, the music. Auditions are a scary thing. Anyone who's ever gone through one should know. Even if you've practiced days and months on end, and are confident in your own skills, there's still no guarantee that you won't mess up when it really matters. You only get one shot after all, and in a situation where some have to be left empty-handed, doubts will definitely spring into your mind. You know how good you are, but where exactly do you stand when compared with others of the same craft? The essential thing is, you're not the one judging yourself, and even if you know the person performing the auditions, you still may not know what exactly it is that he or she is looking for, or what they find "good". It can be difficult just getting your head in the right mind-set to execute what you've practiced in those situations, and once doubt sets in, regardless of how prepared you are, it can be awfully nerve wracking. I loved Kumiko's monologue describing the whole audition and result announcement process. It really took me back to those that I'd experienced myself back in high school. I felt the same jitters just watching it all happen. They executed it perfectly. Not surprised at the results either. Natsuki essentially started playing only in high school, and basically slacked off during her entire first year after the incident, and even during the first half of the show, wasn't all that serious with her practices. I feel like she's the perfect contrast to Asuka, who is totally relentless with her practicing, to the point of shunning her members if they get the way of her practice time. I liked the fact that she lost her temper in this episode, because it was another added sign that the pressure was getting to even a chill girl like her. Trying to get serious after a year-long hiatus was always a tough ask, and her failure to make the band is all on her and her previously lackadaisical attitude. She has no one to blame but herself. Still, I'm hoping that she actually learns from the situation and will keep practicing for whatever competitions that they have in the future. Even Kumiko thought she was playing really well before the auditions. Hazuki was definitely set for a fall, not because she didn't have the talent, but because she started later than everyone. As in real life, even if you had the talent, if it wasn't nurtured in its infancy, you will still miss out on opportunities due to timing issues. I love the fact that we get to see such life lessons being played out in this show. So much better than "Oh everyone tried their best and will definitely be rewarded for it and everyone ends up happy" farce. The conclusion we get this episode feels so much more realistic. Same goes with my poor Midori's reactions in this show. She was the one who egged Hazuki on to make her confession, and feels like the conclusion was her fault. I don't agree that it's definitely her responsibility to cheer up Hazuki. We all take failures and rejections in different ways, some people deal better than others. Whilst Hazuki is laughing it off and purposely ignoring/running away from the rejection, Midori is brooding on her "mistake" in egging Hazuki on, hurting her good friend in the process. The fact that she feels even worse (on the outside at least) than the person in question herself just goes to show how much she values Hazuki as a friend. It's easy to criticize others when you're not in their shoes, but personally I find her reaction completely real. Midori is the type of girl who airs out her true feelings and makes no effort to hide behind facades. Just one in the list of many reasons why I love her character best. HatsumiShinogu said: The thing is, I don't get why people are so surprised or ignore the hints that Shuuichi does like Kumiko and instead brush it off as a misunderstanding. Also, the fact that some people think that Shuuichi should end up with Hazuki. I admit I'd be disappointed if he did accept Hazuki's feelings but I wouldn't go and say that he should have ended up with Kumiko. In MAL it's called "Shipping". People are very biased towards their own beliefs in who deserves to get together with whom, and some just ship certain couplings because they don't like certain types of couples getting together (homophobes and heterophobes alike). Some people just like to take their ships to an extreme and lash out at others when they disagree with them. For the same reason, they'll purposely blind themselves to the possibility that they themselves are wrong. I've been complaining about it since two episodes ago, cause it just makes these threads less enjoyable to visit. The confrontational attitudes of some of the people in here just renders the place toxic. Yours is a mild opinion which shows you are capable of viewing the larger picture. Unfortunately it seems that not everyone else around these parts can do the same. And seriously, can we keep all the "Is this Yuri/Non-Yuri?" discussion in the proper thread???? I have watched neither Tamako Market nor Hyouka, and really don't need or appreciate any spoilers for those or other anime series either. The analysis isn't even relevant to whats been happening in this show. Just take it all somewhere else will ya? Or just spoiler that shit. To the rest of my fellow mellow forumers, I'll leave some love: Hazuki the chipmunk Kumiko in denial Dat Hazuki head-chop (poor Midori...) .....at least it made her feel better Natsuki practice (seriously KyoAni does anything related to water so well) That silly chipmunk face squash Midori Approves of this episode. And it ended after Reina's confession to the teacher. One fact can not be denied. All anime that has a portagonista female, someone who has male and female protagonist has a beautiful girlfriend. It's always the same thing the guy is boring, does not provide passes to attack the male character, and to create false relationships. To yuris of fans, traditional relationships is a crime, a female protagonist have interrese in man's crime. For fans of yuri, it is necessarily the anime that has female protagonist, having to end up with a woman friend. |

Well, that was rather predictable. Can't say it was bad though, since the reason it was predictable was because the story was structured very well and not simply because it lined it up with all the usual cliches and made no attempt to spread them. For how Kumiko talked about crowd mentality in the early episodes it seems she herself was affected, her cynical and disinterested attitude might have been more to cover her own passion in band. |

Episode quiet, would not say how exciting story, but full of anxiety, yes. The real twist would not find Kumiko in the squad, unlike what if instead seen. Quite discounted the results, but the story is quite as good as the performance. Drawings with ups and downs, did not expect a similar drop. KyoAni must not give up, the TV series is very promising and has great potential. The comic parts are quite fun and give more facets to the characters. I look forward to the next episode. |

Fantastic episode, so yeah! Romance is still present even now! And I loved how not everyone made the cut for the band. Realistic and great. Can't wait for the next episode. |

I think we should just all be happy that santolaguna is not into Love Live. On a side note, heterophobia is not a thing. |

The first half was a bit disappointing(only for this show's sky high standards though) but from Kaori's scene on it was exquisite again. Asuka was...oh my, a f...can I swear here? |

This is definitely going in Shuichi x Kumiko direction and I don't mind it, in-fact, I love it . That being said, I am loooving Kumiko x Reina moments, so perfect <3 Sad Natsuki didn't get selected. In-coming drama, I am warning you guys. Proud of Reina, she is gonna do solos. When the senpai are definitely feeling complicated about this. Congratz to Sapphire, Kumiko and Shuuichi as well, love them all. Is it bad that I love the entire Hibike Euphonium cast? Sorry. not sorry. |

I would really like to see more info on the trauma that Kumiko had with that sempai in the past that was making her so nervous for the audition. Is it something that Reina knew about, since they were in middle school together? If Kumiko was being berated by sempais in the band you would think that others in the band would know about it, eh? Now that the auditions are over, I expect that we won't find out what actually happened back then and just be left with these vague images... Frustrating! This is still my favorite show of the season. I look forward to it every week! |

Imeon said: Hmm... you know, this comment is still pissing me off even though you're not entirely explicit about what you say is so obvious.I still don't know though what Kumiko exactly wants in the future in relation to music, but Reina is pretty much obvious. You know why she entered that school and why she wants to be the best. I've been partially spoiled in spite of trying to avoid it. But fortunately still not completely, and I hope it doesn't go the way I think you are implying. I'll be more clear on the issue: On why she entered the school, going by just the anime and considering what Kumiko's sister said, it is indeed obvious that Reina knew about the teacher and thus entered that school because of him. But let's put a line there. The rest goes in spoiler That she loves the teacher is still not clear in the anime. Going to that conclusion requires the very sexist assumption that women cannot be passionate about something that doesn't relate to romance. As far as I can tell from the anime, Reina followed the teacher for guidance to improve her music, and she wants to be the best because of her love of music, not of the teacher. She could still fall in love with him, but as a separate event, perhaps as a confusion on her account of love and admiration, or perhaps something more real, I don't know. If it all turns out that it was indeed all along about the teacher, then she is basically on epic stalker level, and what she told Kumiko at the festival was pure hypocrisy. We'll know for sure after she gets rejected. If she still tries to be the best on her own, then her love for the teacher was something extra, not her core motivation. Otherwise she is as shallow as I think you are implying, and I'll be very disappointed with the story. But I repeat, I still don't see how the later conclusion can be taken so early in the story, without being blinded by novel spoilers (or whole novel I guess) or sexist prejudice. |

The part which is different is that Ajunky sees Reina's passion as being her own desire to perform well and become a better musician. On the other hand, your comment does imply that Reina only wants to perform well to impress Taki, in that context, it does seem quite sexist, since music is passion of hers and does not have to be tied to romantic goals. |

zensunni said: Regardless, I will continue shipping Kumiko and Reina. You don't have to rely on anything else if you read the following spoiler. But prepare to get disappointed. This is your final warning. The last line of volume 4 is — "Atashi mo Shuuichi no koto suki dayo." I am pretty sure you don't need me to translate that line. Edit: Also, the reason she ends up with Shuuichi is not because she is boring but because of her meeting with Reina. Seeing Reina wanting to move forward inspired her to take steps she wouldn't take the way she has been — i.e. indifferent to everything and anything in her life (something I predicted in episode 8, which she herself says in episode 9.) |

I like that there's a sense of realism here. Natsuki failed because she started practicing too late while Hazuki failed because she's a newbie and obviously not as good as the more experienced players. Any other anime would just make all the main and some of the more exposed side characters pass through the audition. They didn't even miraculously bring back Aoi. It's a crime that this anime has such a low score compared to Amagi since I believe this is KyoAni's best work in a very long time. |

Why Hazuki has to face all the problems and still smile. I mean she is was just rejected and now not being selected in the auditions is just too much. :'( . By the way I think that taki sensei is a big conductor and most of the students don't know it, yet . Reina had to be selected for the solos . She is the perfect girl in this anime . I think kumiko will eventually fall for shuuichi. I have one question , why did their school dress changed o_0 . Kyoani is love , kyoani is life. Long Live KyoAni :) |
