I love the art too, is pretty typical of the director and what I think really makes her unique.

The style of the art and directing is hardly unique as it's heavily influenced by the style popularized by Bakemonogatari (Meganebu uses ridged cardstock that is almost identical to the cardstock used in the -monogatari series) and Mawaru Penguindrum that has already been knocked-off in anime like Sengoku Collection, but it's executed pretty well, so I'm happy with it.

It's basically the director's style. Yamamoto Soubi's other works are just like this (well kind of). But yeah, it's a stylistic choice and not laziness. Studio Deen is definitely not a lazy animation studio. I rarely see derp faces in their anime, if anything, I don't think I have noticed any at all (at least in their recent works).

Studio Deen is known to be a relatively poor studio as far as, well, all aspects are concerned, honestly. It is not unheard of for there to be massive amounts of corner-cutting in Deen anime, although that hasn't been the case yet for this one.

And they say that this was a series targeted towards the people who watch Free..honestly, the episode was not impressive. It was so...I dunno..bad? I'm okay with the colours and the animation.. but something about them just seems so off that it's irritating to watch..

but well, it's my policy never to drop a series after I started unless I really hate it so...we'll see how it goes..

Well the detail, well there is no detail, but the animation, oh wait, half of all the scenes are frames. No, I don't hate it, though. At the very least, it was entertaining enough, but I can't say the same will apply throughout the whole series.
The random people are worse than in WATAMOTE, because they're blocks or something instead of at least having a form of some sort.
Anyway, I don't expect much, but at least for now I don't hate it.
, and the ED song wasn't bad.

Well I'm not going to point fingers here and say who came up with what first, or what is unique or not, but according to MAL, Yamamoto Soubi's earliest work was in 2009, the same time Bakemonogatari was produced. She also had one or two works made in 2010, and another made in 2011. Mawaru Penguindrum was made in 2011. I would like to note that I haven't watched either show, or at least I haven't finished Penguindrum yet.

I can't really remember if Yamamoto ever used cardstocks people (but there was something similar, cardstock UFOs) in her other works that I've seen, so I can't say much about it being influenced from Bakemonogatari, but everything else isn't not original. Just because you have already seen this style or a similar style before, doesn't mean it's not unique. Like I said, it's very much the same as the director's usual style, and according to your anime list, you haven't seen any of her other works. Though I will modify my stance a little and say that it's not entirely the same as her previous style either. It could be because she has a team now instead of working alone, and also that this is purely comedy (so far) whereas her other works were more drama based.

Clearly I haven't been with anime that long to know this, didn't realize that Studio Deen is known to be a poor animation studio. But I did say that at least in their recent works, I haven't found any problems with their anime. Even if they are cutting corners, they've shown that they can still create backgrounds and draw in background characters, therefore, they are not being lazy by making the crowd of students look like cardboard cutouts and it's merely a stylistic choice. The person I quoted in my previous response thought that maybe it was due the animators being lazy and I was refuting it as to why it isn't so.

I hated it. I hated it so much I'm surprised I managed to sit through the entire episode.

Like a lot of people I expected a knock-off of Free! (I was aware it was going to be different and hoped very much it would be). What I found was a series riding on the style of shows like Bakemonogatari and Penguindrum. I'm not a fan of this style but when it's done well it's quite enjoyable. Meganebu didn't do it well.

The colours were fine. They stood out a lot but it didn't really bother me. The rest of the animation, however, was a pain to watch. There wasn't much animation. It was sort of disjointed, the characters didn't look like they were actually interacting.

The characters were horrendous! We have the main character, the stoic one, the one that likes cream buns(?) and two shotas. Other people like the idea of men looking and acting like hyper sexualised children, but I find it uncomfortable. Especially when that's the ONLY thing about their characters. Maybe one of them dropped wrenches sometimes? And what was the deal with Akira's brother? Why did he climb all over him? Why is he so smitten?

Dropped.
Good riddance to you sir

Hmmm I am conflicted with this show.

The art is gorgeous! I love all the colors and the style itself. I see a lot of complaining about the non animated parts but I think that is part of the style, not anything that really takes from it. The characters themselves also seem super fun! I didn't know what I was expecting from this show, but I am not super disappointed. It seems it will just be about silly boys doing boy things. I won't say anything bad about it before I see a few more episodes. It seems fun!

I would like to note that I haven't watched either show, or at least I haven't finished Penguindrum yet.

Right, that's why I said "popularized by Bakemonogatari...and Mawaru Penguindrum." While they obviously did not invent things saturated colours, the blending of abstract imagery with conventional manga-style figures, or the use of typography in film, they are the two series that are largely responsible for the current rise in popularity of using such a style in full-length TV anime. Prior to these two series, such a style has been mostly the domain of shorts like OP/EDs (The Michiko to Hatchin OP—its colour palette especially—comes to mind when watching Meganebu!) or the various shorter works of Studio 4ºC, although there are precedents in TV anime as well like Paniponi Dash! (good), Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (very good), and the oldest example that I personally know of—although I'm sure that there are older ones—Soul Taker (very bad). And if one were to look outside of the realm of anime, the influence goes much much further back and, skipping a whooole bunch of people, you eventually end up at Roy Lichtenstein (or rather the comic artists whose work he "borrowed")... and then Hans Richter... and then Kazimir Malevich... and so on all the way back to the Arabs, then the Persians, then... wait, what are we talking about again?

Anyways, leaving the question of whether it is "original"/"unique" or not aside (and I've always maintained that this is a something that barely matters in most cases), this is a style that Yamamoto Soubi is obviously very comfortable working in, and even if recent examples like C3 or Tsuritama abound, I think that she does a better job with it than most. Furthermore, she uses it in a way that is well-integrated into the other aspects of the show, making for a very engaging overall experience.

tl;dr – very few things can be called "original" but originality is not a prerequisite of quality and is frequently irrelevant anyways

Edit: Oh, and I totally have seen something else from Yamamoto before—Sekai Kei Sekai Ron—so there!

Lol uh, I'm honestly not sure what we're talking about either XD I apologize for misreading your post, especially when I skimmed over the word "popularized." I tend to get a little hotheaded sometimes when I read other people's post and see something that I disagree with, I have to fix that. Anyways, point taken, as Yamamoto's other works were shorts/OVAs and not like Bakemonogatari or Penguindrum which were apparently among the first to popularize the use of such styles in anime series. I haven't watched a variety of anime like you have through the titles you mentioned though so I'm not really knowledgeable at all on this matter and so it probably wasn't in my place to say anything regarding originality. (But anyways you previously said the style was influenced by Bake and Penguin, which I still don't entirely agree with, that's why I replied to you and mentioned the dates in the first place ;D)

And oops, I didn't see that either on your list, I guess it's because I expected to see either one of the Kono Danshi OVAs or Robotica Robotics, which I believe are probably the works she's more known for. On the matter of uniqueness or originality, well, I guess it's more of a subjective term? If we are being technical here with the use of the word "unique," instead of just saying it's unique, maybe it's just better to say that the director (or any other directors with a specific style) has a style that is uniquely her own. Example: Pretty sure everyone can recognize a Studio Ghibli's work, Shinkai's, Shinbo's, Yoshiura's (etc) work when they see one, even if they aren't familiar with the title.

But it has every right to be compared to Free! - Deen itself said they're going for Free! audience and both shows belong to the same category, bishies doing more or less random things and being adorable/cute/lovable/hot/enter your adjective here. So I wouldn't be so surprised here. If there is some sort of epidemy going on inside the fandom where, for instance, Dragon Ball is compared to Kimi to Boku just because they have dominantly male cast then I'm not aware of that, sorry.

seikipunch said:

I think it holds water but you need to look at it from other perspective. Certain someone likes shounen anime and Dragon Ball was spot on when it comes to his/her tastes. So, knowing that One Piece is also a shounen, he/she gives it a try. But dang it! They thought the pirate setting will be cool but it's dull! Characters are boring and bland! They just can't get into it. The same may be said about Meganebu!: Free! had certain something that appealed to the watcher, Meganebu! doesn't (for now or at all, time will tell, it's only the first episode after all).
So saying that Meganebu! is bad because it's not LIKE Free! (because it's better in [enter something]) is valid to me. Saying that Meganebu! is bad because it's NOT Free! is a lot of bull on the other hand. You can pretty much sum it with "one person's garbage is another person's treasure".

It's really silly and stupid and ridiculous AND kinda funny.
I think I'll like this.

One thing I absolutely LOVE is the colours. Everything by Yamamoto Soubi has always had beautiful colours and I'm glad this is also the case. What is reduced is her usual style of processing the scenes, which is a pity. But it still looks really artistic and good.
The story is a bit slack and makes it stupid. I hope this will get better.

Lastly: It never even crossed my mind to expect something like Free! from this. Am I the only one?
I mean, how did you even come to that conclusion? Just because it's about guys? Otherwise I can't see anything.
And I hate people who watched this just because they wanted another Free! and keep saying this anime sucks. I've heard that so many times by now. Seriously, stop comparing them.

I was just waiting for the vision doctor to be a guy. And there was no nurse!

When they were trying to stall for time I started cracking up. XP

The fast pace of the graphics and text reminds me of Axis Powers Hetalia, so I guess I have some practice with that. I thought the x-ray idea was stupid (peeping on women) but I found it otherwise hilarious. I liked the characters too, and the music!

My friend tried watching it but didn't like it...but decided to give it a try again anyway and ended up enjoying the rewatch! I guess it's easier to take in after you get over your expectations and initial judgements.

Eh... I think it's kinda dumb to judge a series by comparing it to something else. In my eyes, if something's not what I expected, that's usually a good thing.

OT: Unless I expected it to be good, and it's not... which is basically what I thought of this first episode. I wear glasses (and contacts), but I couldn't relate to it at all. I can't ever imagine being fixated on my glasses, and x-ray glasses may be many guys' fantasies it's not mine and it just came across as immature with this episode. I get that to some people it's humorous, but dedicating an entire episode to the single idea of making "x-ray glasses" is kinda tasteless imo. I mean, we all pretty much understand that for one it's something that wouldn't make sense... since you'd just see their skeleton at most. And two, I assume I wasn't the only one who noticed instantly that it was a male doctor. So overall, this episode pretty much explained that we have 5 idiot protagonists, 4 of which think nothing of pleasing the main character... so I honestly don't even like any of the characters so far. The only time I even smiled was when Minabe stripped to lower wind resistance, if only because it reminded me of Takamatsu from Angel Beats.

But since there's already an episode two, I guess I'll wait to judge anymore till after the next episode.

Man! I loved that first episode! It was awesome!
I personally loved the bright, manga-esque art style. Also, the ED using real pictures was the coolest thing ever.
My favorites so far are Yukiya and Hayato. And the Soma lil bro.
What else can I say? I thought it was awesome, and here's hoping I keep thinking so.
P.S. If we're making comparisons, how about Ouran? :D
Jk, it just reminded me of that show. They are not really that similar.

All the charas are quite likeable so far. I like Hayato and Yukiya most of all, and their voices as well, esp how Hayato says 'megane!'. And that's a genius way of lowering wind resistance lols

Okay, so I'm rewatching this series. Maybe 1 ep per day, or something. I need something cute and funny to lighten up my every day life and this show is sure to provide that.

TFW you know why they're making those pervy x-ray glasses. Don't click spoilers unless you've watched the entire show.

I didn't remember enjoying this episode so much when it first came out. The comedy is A+ and very relatable as a fellow megane. I think my eyes are as bad as Akira's. LOL I remember going to a clinic and having to go up close and personal with the letter chart. heh

Goddamn, this director is skilled. You can tell this show doesn't have that much money in their budget but the director makes it as stylish and attractive as shows that actually have the money to.
