Loved it too. ^_^
Commencing with the graphic arts and ending with the characters. Very amusing and sweet. It gave me the nice impression of motion naive drawings.

As an Asian that grow up watching Doraemon and Shin Chan, this really hits home. It feels like all my nostalgia and those typical Japanese stereotypes got compiled into a movie. A pleasant show indeed.

I may be the only one who thinks that way, but this is my favorite Ghibli movie of all time (and I have watched them all). I wish there was a sequel of some sort. The TV-show "Nono-chan" wasn't nearly as good as this.

Took me a few minutes to get into it but once it got past the complete randomness of the start it was really fun.

I mean, who hasn't experienced some of the things that happened to the Yamadas lol. It felt as if the writers took stuff that has happened to them and just adapted that, which imo is part of what made it so fun, the relatability.

I as expected this is very different from the usual Studio Ghibli film, not just with a different art style but being a series of skits rather than a single storyline.

I've never seen the original strips but the translation into animation was smoothly done, along with the character being easy to click with their quirks.

I really loved this film, from the unique visuals, to the amazing Disney dub, the OST even had a parody of the kamen rider opening, and the main cast of characters where pretty entreating, definitely one of Ghibli's most criminally over looked films.

I didn't think it was just a collection of random stories. Touching at times but most of the skits were pretty boring.
Average at best and my least favorite Ghibli film.

Surprisingly good since I went into it with fairly low expectations. It was really funny in places and charming in others which translated well into any culture despite being traditional Japanese family orientated. Overall 7.5/10.

Of course this wasn't the best Ghibli movie, but It was done nicely! Simple, calm, relaxing and funny most of the time. I could watch this all day.
Oh, oh and some of the OST songs were really nice. (╯✧∇✧)╯

This was such a feel good and uplifting movie, that taught some really good life lessons along the way. Especially that speech at the beginning, which was one of the best advice I've heard on not just how to live a happy and fulfilling family life, but also how to get through the ups and downs of life itself. Definitely one of the most underappreciated and overlooked Ghibli movies.

Really nice collection of moments we all know from the real life. I literally recognized many of those situation.

Add playful animation and clever comedy with tons of references or touching moments and you'll get this timeless picture of our everyday lives.

7/10 Characters felt really lifelike and were quite real. Had good time watching this movie.

i started watching all of the ghibli movies late last year, and I plan to watch them all. Now, it goes without saying that this film is completely different from the studio's other works. I totally get that. But it just did not work for me. The animation felt very cheap, and the lack of any plot made me never gain any interest. Definitely the worst Ghiblet I have seen so far, I'm just glad I got it over with. I gave it a 2, not because it was 'horrible' per se, but because it was just soooo uninteresting, I would never consider watching it again.

I started to put off this film after watching a few minutes of it, thinking that it wouldn't be my sort of thing. I'm glad I stuck with it all the way through; I'm impressed that I ended up liking a skit-style anime so much. I never thought I would.

This should be mandatory watching for people who want to get married.

Part of what made it work for me was that it didn't feel like it was "just" random events. It felt like it was building toward something, and that ended up being true. The penultimate skit contrasted with one of the first skits and contextualized the whole film, giving it a deeper meaning and purpose beyond the events themselves: Marriage is about acceptance, about give and take; it's not all about you and you have to be willing to deal with situations that are "unfair" for the sake of harmony. Each of the Yamadas had their sweet points and their sour points, but the necessity of patience with the sour points to keep the family life healthy was the film's overall point.

The little things can be what make or break a marriage and a family.

They aren't perfect, but the Yamadas are a pretty cool family, and that mutual acceptance of theirs is a good example to follow.

Great stuff.

You know, I remember seeing the DVD cover to this way back and being instantly turned off by the character designs. So I passed on it, and figured I never would watch it, but in more recent years I've started watching several series with designs and art styles similar to this. Mainichi Kaa-san comes to mind. As does another series whose name escapes me at the moment....Shin Atashin'chi! I guess I've become more open-minded if you want to put it that way. So after watching Only Yesterday, yesterday, and seeing this recommended in related sections I figured why not? I definitely see some of the resemblances between the two. And while I don't think I liked this quite as much it was definitely another film that was right in my strike zone. Random everyday life scenes focusing on a family. I think my favorite scene was probably where the dad wanted to appreciate the coming of the first snowfall of the year with a picture and his family was having none of it. Though the son going crazy after speaking to a girl on the phone was nice too. I kinda wish we had gotten more of the younger daughter, her biggest segment where the family loses her happened to coincide with a bad flair up of the toothache I've been suffering from the last few days so I couldn't enjoy it as much as I otherwise might have. I was delighted to see Que Sera Sera in the film, I love that song. I remember being first exposed to it at the end of the classic Simpsons episode Bart's Comet, and then many years later via Alfred Hitchcock's 1950s remake of his own film, The Man Who Knew Too Much. That was a wonderful little ending scene where it was included. But now I'm rambling so uh, yeah. This was a good movie. I see they actually made a 61 episode anime series after it adapting the same source material. Certainly wouldn't mind checking some of that out but I doubt it's translated. Regardless, I'll give this a solid 8 out of 10.

I didn't flat out love it but I really liked it. The stories were really amusing and it felt more like a moving comic strip. even the style reminded me of the comics from my childhood days when we still had a newspaper at home.

Great movie which succeeded at being funny (I laughed and smiled quite a lot) due to being realistic. Shige (the grandma) is my favourite character, she was just so loveable! I also enjoyed the brave stylistic choice Takahata went with, it's nice to know that this style travelled from Yamadas to Kaguya-hime.
If only this movie had more Nonoko, I'd give it a 10. 9/10 overall.

Totally underrated . This film definitely doesn't deserve 7.23. I really loved it and specially the art style. I should say it's another brilliant creation by Isao Takahata. Nonoko was really cute.

Holy shit. This is a 99s show. I kinda crazy myself, and crapping all around with how old this shit was....

I Finished watching this type of SoL that talked much about the random things appeared on the Yamada family. Like that synopsis, its an insane fun-riding thing. No supernatural like Totoro. Not much fantasy theme. Its just a usual ranting of Japanese family issues that actually kinda popular to be the theme of some mainstream anime. Do not expected much with its art style and animation. Its so wacky, still i had an enjoyment over that style. Like i said before, these show had some kind of similar themes like the popular family anime surrounding on that era, and even survived until these day. Ridiculous series, like a Crayon Shinchan, Chibi Maruko chan, and such else, i don't quite remember all of that my kid show. Yeah like that. So, yeah, thats it.

Its just a shame, that Ghibli take the risk to brought these thing into a movie. It will be so better if this had its own series. Like the Totoro franchises, my only complain was that thing, to be honestly. An own TV series.... Welp, i can't say much. It just how Ghibli take the opportunity to running their business. Its actually not so bad on my view, referring how i enjoying so much with these type of theme. It just, well, like other SoL, not much happening than just a usual random hilarious daily lifes that might give you a chilling day, or just another useless time to be wasted.

For me, this is well deserved as one of the nicest family show i've ever seen that bring me a multiple feeling. The comedical aspect was nice punched. The drama had its in the right place. The storyline wiser than i imagined. It had a lot of deep meaning as a family matter somehow kinda had a big problem nowadays. It just so relatable, pretty chill, relaxing, and i was very entertained with these show. Overall, yeah, maybe my paragraph here kinda wacky, just like the show itself. Lmao. So, in short, i take this opportunity to say, nice job Ghibli for making these gacha SoL family show. A 8/10 shall be enough. Not gonna take these on 9 or 10 lists. Because, its just not a relatable line-up placed for these crazy show. You know what i mean? Thats it!

I found this film as being very simple but yet super creative. Most of the situations seen here are super relatable in real life and thanks to that this film will stand test of time. I know not everyone will find this film enjoyable or interesting but theres just something quite charming about it.

It's just not best of Takahata's works but definitely one of the most creative and charming ones out of all Ghibli films and thats all this film has going for it.

i had a shitty day and i'm feeling so much better after watching this!
the art is adorable and the family is insanely fun. i lost my grandma this year, but i wanted to watch this with her so much. this is that kind of movie, that doesn't matter your age or where you are in life, if you have a family you can relate to at least something in the story and enjoy it.

i love the style choice here too. the colors and the design is a breath of fresh air and makes the movie even lighter than it already is.
not my favourite, not the most memorable, but really enjoyable one.

Well, that's a real new style for ghibli. Story was comical and heartwarming.
overall very interesting (thought could have used slightly darker shade and more strokes)
Only thing I don't get is the title "my neighbors the yamadas". Who is suppose to be the neighbor?

This (and Only Yesterday) are underrated Takahata gems. A few of the jokes fall slightly flat and just a couple of the sound effects and little jingles throughout it are slightly annoying (the OST overall is actually lovely stuff), but even all of those small drawbacks lend themselves pretty well to the comic-strip-come-to-life shtick and charm of the movie. A unique, pleasantly quaint, and even moving experience. R.I.P., Takahata-san. 7.5/10

I personally liked how relatable some of the moments can be in the film, particularly when he goes on about how useless stuff is useful and useful stuff is useless. junk like that is stuff myvfamily would go on and on about. I also realllllly loved the sudden change in artstyle when the dad went to confront the bikers it actuallly built up a lot of tension.
