Played with expectations perfectly.

They established last episode that maybe the attacker was actually benevolent, intentionally or not.

They then show you a disgusting man with very little to zero redeeming qualities. Now that you've been conditioned to the episode format, you sit there thinking "I absolutely do not want this piece of shit to be a fortunate victim, and all his troubles resolved" and then, nope.

Not only does the show take a great twist and play with our expectations, the Policeman does not get the traditional treatment. So, hopefully, things will stay bad for this guy and the viewer gets a bit of relief from that.

i'm probably reading way, way too deeply into it but whatever its GOOD SHIT

and also in a moment, the fearful shonen bat that's been striking terror into the city is immediately put down and shown to really be just a kid who could be stopped by anyone who could fend for themselves. not some super villain, just some little shit.

pretty sure it was a copycat like other people though.

but I have full faith that this twist will deliver either way.

Ditto. What a surprising twist so early on in the season.
What is justice in their society? Petty crimes going punished or large crimes going unpunished by those who job is to uphold the law?
This is so questionable, but I bet that the attacks won't stop

I think the manga hero's voice actor was going for a Kenshiro sound.

What an irony. Lil' Slugger got captured not by fair and square detectives, but by wasted and corrupted policeman during his free time.

Hehe, that manga reminded me so much of "Hokuto no Ken", especially its atmosphere. ;)

A very tough situation that guy got in. While he was committing moral injustice all over the place, he was at least paying money properly to his wife and daughter. And then, the pale-guy completely manipulated him, threatening his happiness. Strange how Shounen Bat got caught...

Does a police officer have some involvement with Yakuza or something?

He has a great need to call him father by prostitutes.

And also he's duplicitous.

When the old lady takes money from the ATM and the policeman looks at her.
Maybe he thought about the robbery?

Well yes, he was XD That pink mask tho lol.
He's desperate.

He gets into bigger and bigger problems. Now he must face the music.
And he talks about his family but we didn't have occasion to see them.

That headshot with flap.

The dude went from begging for help to kicking the shit out of the kid that tried to "knock" some sense into him lmao fuck that was good

Also I hate that I figured out he was one of Harumi's clients solely based on the fact he looks like an ugly bastard

A corrupt cop who's already in deep shit with the Yakuza deciding to claw his way out of his predicament by victimizing many innocent citizens so he can help his family out. He's disgusting and nigh irredeemable so him being the one person who caught Shonen Bat was a pretty shocking twist for me.

The kid that got caught could be a fake but knowing how this anime likes to be unpredictable, I guess that I'll only find out if I watch more~

So I'm guessing since this guy lives an unhappy life in debt and with not-so-good terms with his family, he puts himself into a manga character's shoes and pretends to be him because he wants a life that's more exciting than his own?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong

So far these are the connection I’m seeing with Shonen Bat’s victims.

Somebody want Sagi to stop being so popular and being treated well by their boss so she was assaulted. Then the writer was assaulted because he’s tormenting Sagi and she wish he will stop stalking her.

Then the fat kid was also attacked because Yuichi wished for it as he believe he’s the one making his life miserable and he wants it to stop but also ended up being a victim because for sure other kids wants him to stop as they believe he’s Shounen Bat.

Then Harumi as she wish to be freed from Maria so she can stop from ruining her life and since they are just one person she also becames a victim.

Then the police officer, he wants somebody to stop him from doing robbery and other bad things so then Shounen Bat appear. However, the attack wasn’t successful.

And just like what have mentioned by the old man a few episodes back, the golden shoes will come if you call, something like that.

I’m curious what will happen next since he’s been arrested.

Did he actually capture him?
I am pretty sure shonen bat is just an imaginary reliever from the people with mental illnesses. Gotta find out soon.

this was kinda a weird ep. i was so surprised that shonen bat was caught this early. i have no idea how he took that bat to his head and was still conscious lol. cant wait to see what the next episode brings. also, this main guy in the episode is so disgusting lol
oh also and ive noticed that these victims mainly wanted freedom from something, the first girl was under a lot of pressure, yuichi wanted to be free from suspicion, harumi wanted freedom from her other personality maria, and the guy in this episode wanted "freedom from the crimes he was committing"(?)(idk how to word it).

so the kid IS real. sheesh haha

what was up with the manga that was shown throughout the episode? that was different compared to previous episodes. and i certainly wasn't expecting the kid to be caught, at least not yet. I wasn't even sure the kid was real lol

but THAT bum caught him? hmm. somehow managed to survive the assault and actually hit him with his shoe from 50ft away AND knock him over? Eh, unlikely, but I'll roll with it. Wonder how it plays out considering he's in deep with that gang

One of the things I'm really appreciating about Paranoia Agent is how effortlessly it's weaving stand-alone storytelling with an over-arcing narrative. The main characters of the episodes being set-up within the plots of the previous episodes has been an incredibly effective way to weave these stories together, and gives the world a stronger sense of community to it. Harumi being Ichi's tutor, and Maria being Hirukawa's favourite prostitute in the last episode.

This extends to this whole episode. Last episode stated Shonen Bat was captured and showed that Hirukawa was the one responsible for it, but without seeing the act I was still skeptical, and was thinking it was a copy cat. Which it still could be but actually seeing it I'm leaning towards it being more legitimate.

This was definitely a surprising occurrence regardless, I honestly did expect this series to maintain the formula it set up, but last episode stated it wasn't going to and episode 4 showed us it wasn't. In such a dark episode, the ending was kind of hilarious, Shonen Bat's attack not working and his subsequent freak out and beat down was a tonal shift from how he's been presented earlier.

Hirukawa's story itself was interesting, and I thought the way that manga story was integrated into the narrative effective, allowed for some visual variance but more importantly, told us something about Hirukawa's mental state in a creative way. Paranoia Agent really takes advantage of being a visual medium.

This show sure weaves the main plot of shonen bat's reign of terror with vignettes of various characters and 'short stories'.

I really enjoyed the cut into manga scenes in this. It's creepy because he's robbing people but then also has some comedic reprieve when the 'manga voice' is used as overlay while he's doing it all in his track suit and pink balaclava.

I suppose lil slugger was caught off guard when he didn't knock the guy out. Very curious that this guy caught him.

That was a really good episode. About a shitty man grasping onto the last of good he has in him is how I see it. Well, the whole debt thing isn't very new, but as usual, the execution is well done. I don't believe Shounen Bat was caught. He can't be that lame, come on. Well, let's see where this goes.

wow that guy was so fat that shounen bat couldn't even knock I'm out. Or my other theory was that this mafia guy just didn't want to or wasn't able to be released from his ways and be 'relieved' like everyone else. Well, they've finally caught shounen bat, i wonder what the interrogation will be like.

I can't say I expected that ending.

SB really just got la chanca'd by the lamest character we've seen so far. I was starting to think that SB was a spirit, or some other paranormal entity. Seems like he's actually the kid he's described as. There's still a lot to be answered though. Why did he pick that particular string of victims? Why did a lack of sanity attract him so much?

My prediction is that SB is going to be in custody, but the attacks will continue. Copycats following SB's trend will cause even more paranoia amongst the town. Could SB be released because of this?
