"Sun Sets, Sun Rises"
King Louis XV catches smallpox. Tension rises in court as everyone decides whose sides to take in case the King dies. Du Barry, fearing her loss in power if the King dies, tries to get Oscar to persuade Antoinette to forgive her. Oscar refuses, even under threats. Orleans also refuses to see her, knowing that the mistress of a dying king lacked any power that would help him take the throne. The King expels her from Versailles on his deathbed in order to receive religious absolution. Oscar stops a soldier from beating the fallen Du Barry and escorts her out of the palace for her safety. Along the way, Du Barry tells Oscar about her past, saying that as a poor orphan, she had learned to do whatever she could to survive, and that she has no regrets because she lived her life the way she wanted to live it. She would later be executed on false charges of treason. Louis XV dies soon after, and the young and frightened Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette become King and Queen of France. Oscar leads the escort of the late king's body to his burial, crying silent tears over the destructive nature of change. summary courtesy of Wikipedia

A pretty deep episode, King suddenly falls ill & all of a sudden DuBarry is exposed and vulnerable. For all her scheming and exploitation, all of her power hinged on her relationship with the king himself. I actually started to feel a lil' sorry for her, despite all the evil she had done. The king didn't repay her loyalty however and didn't even ensure her safety out of the court.

I think her story served as a lesson as to the example the royalty and nobility have set for their people. They are corrupt and pretty much do whatever they want, so the neglected peasants who learn to survive do the same.

I expected du Barry to meet her end from a failed scheme that Oscar would thwart. I never imagined she'd be ousted just like that. But this puts Antoinette and the new king in a tough position since it's obvious neither of them are currently prepared for the full scope of what it means to be rulers of the land.

Overall this episode was an enjoyable end to this arc of the story. Can't wait to see what comes next.

It's so refreshing to watch a good true-to-its-heart shoujo. I wonder where the story will go after this.

That scene where the King died and the people, while smiling, come in to inform Antoinette and the Crown Prince. Wow, that spoke volumes. Really, though, this was great great great episode.

The final scene of Oscar silently weeping was beautiful.

Glad i don't know history as well as I sued, so I didn't see that coming. The cheering crowd running to the new kign was a creepy scene that included the message of this episode in a nutshell.
Oscar escorting Du Barry was a great gesture, just shows how good a person she is.

Next comes the battle over influence, the king doesn't seem like a very decision-making person, so whoever he trust will make politics for the next few years at least.
I probably regret this post by now.

If you got a disease in this time period you're pretty much fucked its a wonder that Oscar's wound didn't get infected and she died. xD

Finally du Barry is gone although I will miss her smashing things to be honest.

The King is dead and du Barry as axed quicker than you could say long live the king.

And yet I felt sympathy for her even after all of that...good grief.

An excellent episode. It really gave the du Barry character some well-needed depth.

And the scene of everybody running to Marie and young Louis was wonderfully done. I just loved that image. There are all of the nobles, still smiling and panting from the adrenaline rush, as they tell him excitedly that his grandfather's finally kicked the bucket. I honestly wasn't sure whether to laugh at its absurdity or to feel sorry for Louis.

I loved it! Of course it was expected, but her acceptance of things after she knew it was the end for her was wonderful.

Now let's watch a nation collapse under two rulers who were spoiled for two decades and weren't taught how to rule. :D

I thought this episode was kind of rushed but it's still good and enjoyable nonetheless. Wow at the people of Versailles, they only care about securing their position showing how rotten the court is. I'm expecting DuBarry makes her comeback after she got such a depth she deserved and of course I'm also waiting to see the role of the red haired girl who has been left out up until now.

She won't it said she met the Guilotine in the episode. Please pay attention, because expecting a dead person to come back is silly.

Yep.
That scene was pretty disturbing. Though have to say, due Barry's downfall was pretty well done. Couldn't have happened to a nicer person.
Good episode.

Ah, duBarry, you truly were best girl. I will miss her evil smirk.

My interest had been waning a little over the past few episodes, but with a healthy dose of history and the reality of feudal society, its now back again at full force. A good number of themes were explored in this episode.

I know the message is 2 years old, but I will say the same thing to you. In the passage you are referring to, it is clearly said that Madame du Barry was guillotined many years later, in 1793 (Louis XV died in 1768), during the French Revolution, like so many nobles and commoners. The guillotine didn't even exist at this time.
Funny fact: her rival, Marie-Antoinette, was also executed in 1793.

Look at this he said something two years ago, now let me show him how smart I am. Also the Guilotine did in fact exist in 1793 and used at the time.

And I just pointed a mistake. At the end of the episode, her death and its year (1793) are mentioned, as a historical anecdote. Knowing that the episode takes place in 1768, for someone without a good knowledge of French history, I don't think it is silly to expect her to come back. If you don't like when mistakes are corrected, good for you, but please see nothing more than that.

And as someone with a basic grasp of a narrative there would be no reason for them to mention her death, if she was going to come back later they would in fact not mention it like they did.

It was ironic to see all those babas praying for His Majesty's recovery just because they were all afraid of losing their positions and wealth. I know that may be a common occurrence, but it's still ironic.

But what was no less ironic was that Madame du Barry was the one asking for Oscar's favor. Hahaha, a Madame du Barry, eh?

And, what? What the hell is that? Their King just died, not even 5 minutes later they're all running happily to Lady Antoinette's room??? Not a single one of those noble people paid their last respects??

This episode was filled with tragic things. I'm thankful that Oscar is a sane person.

Watching the court happily run to Louis XVI was surreal to watch. This was right after Du Barry was unceremoniously thrown out and immediately treated like the dirt they saw her as. I didn't expect this series to thoroughly show the corruption of wealthy elites especially as it pertains to the upcoming French Revolution which is where I suspect the series will end. Literally all they care about is their own influence on the new king and were excited at the prospect of having a sliver more power to do what? Get their husband a slightly higher position of power? Receive another 200 acres of land?

I am loving this series so far and I never saw it coming. I was prepared for some romance focused stuff never having seen a shoujo before, but I am all in for the historical drama.

@Sorvarin Tbh, all of these characters are bad and rotten at their core. Andre and Oscar are problematic, but I do think they're kindhearted people overall. Also, that one blond peasant girl with the mom seems super nice.

For me, it's just disappointing to see an actual good villain leave. I hope that Orleans can take her job and do it justice.

This episode was a great episode, though also tragic. There is some sympathy for Du Barry because she was born into poverty, and did all she could to basically feed herself. Yet the episode is genius for reminding you that she could've settled for a nice life as the wife of a nobleman, but she ultimately chose to scheme and murder to fly to the Sun. It's brilliant how they call the king her Sun, because it's a double meaning. On one hand, she's like a sunflower, since she doesn't bloom without the Sun (her king). Yet, it's also a brilliant metaphor for how she flew too close to the sun, which is how she met her end. If she had been content with being the wife of a nobleman, she wouldn't have had such a tragic downfall. Plus, as the king's mistress, she didn't try to help others who were suffering for poverty. All she did was lavish herself with great gifts. That came back to bite her, because now she's back in the trenches again, and she doesn't have a king or nobleman to save her.

I can’t help but feel such sadness and empathy for Madame Du Barry. After all, all she’s done up to this point was follow a mindset needed for survival; one that the nobles couldn’t even imagine needing. Her last interaction with Oscar was very touching, knowing that Oscar has never experienced the commoner life and its hardships, as well as how it was never destined for Du Barry’s fate to end well. There was no chance for her, even in exile.

The king died due to smallpox, in those times it was deadly, now everything is over for DuBarry. Seems like we won't never see she again because she will be executed 20 years later according to the narrator. For some reason everyone was so happy for the death of the king, well almost everyone. Why the prince called him grandfather instead of father, who is his father then ans why is not the king, also the narrator continued talking about the revolution, I wonder when it is going to happen. In the next episode we will hear more about Jeanne (I was forgetting her) and seems like she will be another DuBarry.
And what about Orleans, what he has in mind
