On the third morning after Nio joined the Miburo, he encounters an unfamiliar boy named Tarou Tanaka.

Curious about this peer, Nio soon discovers that Kamo has cut down one of their comrades.

I'm wondering if those three boys, Nio, Taro, and the next episode's Hajime will become the next generation's pillar of this organization, which has maximum authority and zero transparency. Miburo has zero bureaucracy which make it very hard to corrupted, but once it corrupted the damage will be beyond repair, which is why Serizawa has to quickly judge and execute the punishment before the spark becomes the flame. There's no interrogative process or whatsoever.

I think the true nature of relationship between Serizawa and Taro goes beyond bullier-bullied, but I don't have any concrete evidence. This is not that kind of anime anyway, so I'll just take it as Taro is someone who love getting punched and kicked from Serizawa and try not interprete beyond that.

Nio meeting his first contemporary in the Miburo. All the others are older and his superiors, even the more kindly like Okita, but now he's got a friend in Taro. This was a rough episode with its content, I know we've had attempted kidnapping and raids already but straight up murder is a bit different than those. Especially seeing how cold hearted not only Serizawa was but Taro as well. Another kid who like Nio has had a rough life. Drifting around from the time he could walk basically. Taro has been treated coldly by the world and thus has become that way himself. Nio even with his rough beginning still had his loving grandma and sister. Taro didn't have anything so nice. Its sad seeing how jaded Taro is when Nio mentions the murdered man having a soul. Nio did come up with a good idea to play it off like the man was just a traveler so the Miburo weren't suspected. Its hard to tell of Serizawa really killed him because he was going to betray the Miburo. He does seem like the type to fly off the handle but it could be a rouse. Either way Nio has gained the respect of another Miburo member in Serizawa and A friend in Taro. Next episode it looks like we'll round out our main character trio with another young boy in the Miburo!

This episode was very well written. We've passed the 3 episodes test with flying colors and I gave my rating a boost from 7 to 8. Looking forward to see where this goes and if the writers can keep up the good work.

If he killed the traitor, why make it look like he murdered him instead? Why not just say so...

Nio is determined to take revenge and change things in Miburo. Serizawa is out of his mind and killing that man being drunk it’s not right.

Taro-kun must have had a tough life, I feel sorry for him.

Crucial episode because of the 3 ep rule. I was considering dropping this anime because the fight scenes were insanely underwhelming in ep1 and ep2. This episode didn't have a fight scene but at least it was interesting, can't really say that about the other 2 episodes. It also has insane gay vibes, idk how to feel about that

I keep watching for now, but if they can't produce a single good fight scene with proper animation I'm dropping it. I did NOT pick up a samurai themed anime just to have no good fight scenes

This failed the 3-episode rule for me. There's no action, or any movement in general, characters have big emotional moments and developments that come out of nowhere, the story doesn't really make sense.

Why did Serizawa insist that he killed that guy in an drunken rage, and why did he need that body hidden out of sight? Maybe there's a good reason for it but I missed it out of boredom and awkwardness.

The show feels comfortably trope-y, but at the same time it has strange vibes that I just can't get into. It's as if an alien wrote it...

We meet one other kid Taro, and we'll meet another one in the next episode.

Actually, this is the tone I would have preferred for The Elusive Samurai.

The Miburo, plus Nio himself, is now 15-men strong, though the one outlier of No. 13 Taro Tanaka being the first wolf, what gives of him of the need being given space?

As much as Nio wants to help him (and evading Hijikata), Taro's thinking is just not the same because of his origins as a slave whom Serizawa found him in one of the aforementioned places, and Soji gives him a bit of a reality check on the cusp of friendship. But Serizawa's deed of killing the fellow Miburo of Tonoichi being found out by Hijikata, and with Taro being his slave to do anything he desired, there're consequences to it, and simply put, Nio is not prepared for the onslaught that Taro blemished for him to witness.

Regardless, Nio rendering his full support to Taro to dispose Tonoichi at Shijo River, only to end up having his valuables be exposed instead for the public to see, Serizawa takes things into his own matters with Nio analyzing the situation with his sharp mind, the latter may not have the expertise to face the bigger trials yet, but for Serizawa's bit, he did survive out of it, and proved that there IS a soul for the living and dead.

Nio using Soji's tactic on him, on Taro to build friendship...that will take some time instead.

At first it seems Tanaka is giving the other orphan Nio a reality check by dumping bodies for his elder Serizawa. It's not the Shinsengumi Nio envisioned. But Nio risks it all to find the truth. The ones who found him see him in the next generation.
