Well I got to watch episode 7-9 today at 新宿バルト9 with a pre-show appearance of the voice actors for Rozé and Ash, as well as the director and producer. Highlights of the discussion were Amasaki Kohei describing last episodes hair brushing scene as the most realistic depiction he has seen and Taniguchi Koujirou commenting on how both Damocles and Sakura are equally "でかい".

Anyway, on to the actual episode. Following on from what Sakuya found out last time, this episode gives us the full backstory of Ash thanks to Sakuya using the Geass on a worker at Ash's old orphanage. It really was a tragic story to watch unfold, as Ash and his brother were forcibly sent to Norland and Ash was turned into an assassin to avoid the both of them being discarded. Seeing his descent into madness was depressing, and the true breaking point was when the younger brother was forced to kill the girl that Ash had promised to reunite with. Of course Norland mercilessly murdering the brother for their mission failure was also incredibly brutal. The scenes in the jail were incredibly important context for the position that Ash later ends up in, with the explanation for why he feels he murdered Sumeragi being that the two tried to escape together and Sumeragi was killed while Ash escaped. It was funny seeing Ash's infatuation with Sakuya begin from this early moment - they are 100% going to end up together romantically by the end of the series, aren't they. Solid cliffhanger at the end with Sakuya being captured. As a whole a very important episode for context and fun to watch throughout.

Ash is by far my favorite character...Loving his story and where it's going. Norland is brutal as hell and Sakuya's repeated use of her Geass just got her caught. I wonder how Sakuya and Ash's relationship is going to go now. She can't be Roze anymore and I think after Ash finds her she's going to either tell him everything or he's going to figure it out himself

Sakuya and Ash's protective relationship was always meant to be. The geass just added an extra layer of trouble to it...like the trouble it has Sakuya and her allies in currently.

Many murders in this episode, maybe too many.

Jugo cast a spell over Ash, now I wonder if the love for Raspberry is even "natural" thing, or more like a Geass branching out because Jugo trusted Ash with Sakuya's safety.

Maybe I should clean my mind but, did they just put Sakuya in a bondage bind to lock her up?

Powerful and sad twist-reveal that Ash was actually looking to protect Sakuya already 🥲

I'm hoping/guessing she will escape again and bring down Norland, although it ended it a pretty tense cliffhanger 😬

I'm really excited for the next couple episodes I'm expecting we get a little more on Norland which will be interesting to see. But, it'll be interesting to see where everything goes next. I wonder if by the end of this series we'll see how the Black Knights think of this situation and Lelouch + C.C too. Since, they'll be no strangers to the powers of Geass

Just realized the night Ash met Ruby moments before she got shot by Nichol technically had him fulfill their promise of meeting again, making his "I've never broken a promise" line to Jugo hit that much harder.

Wonder how severe Ash's mental breakdown will be when he realizes Roze isn't Nichol but is in fact Raspberry, who is in turn the same Sakuya he was always meant to protect all along. Dude needs a hug, man.

An ally of Sakuya is an ally of Sakura's...right?
Did the same nun survive the incident at Lavender home?
No fucking way, Ash's real younger brother is named Nichol? Did he play the piano, kek
Just like Gauron with Kashim and Ali with Soran.
Ash has to kill his heart? His heart being his brother?
Ruby and whichever wealthy nobles adopted her as part of the programme is Ash's his next assignment, but Nichol pulled the trigger because Ash hesitated to kill their childhood friend.
Norland performed the execution that he hinted at doing when the siblings first came to his castle.
With Narah as a witness, Ash just has to do as he's told in order to live.
Sakuya's dad really arranged a marriage for her in prison, go get your Raspberry!
Is Norland purposely going to assign Ash to execute Jugo after all their talks?
Turns out Ash didn't literally kill Jugo, it was that he felt guilty for leaving Jugo behind.
Even though Ruby was a victim of the jobs Norland sent his adopted sons out on, fortunately Lavender Home was actually spared and Ash confessed his sins to the nun.
Sakuya thinks she might be the villain for pulling a Rolo on Ash. She said it, that she didn't even need to use Geass!
Natalia's purple stuffed doll reminds me of Cheese-kun
So Arnold was the guy geass-torturing the soldier and the biker too?

Sakuya just randomly running into the one person that knew everything about Ash is kind of funny. Also Lelouch she certainly is not. She ended up getting caught pretty easily.

Also the things that seem straight lifted from the main series. This episode includes Walther, a knight that turns out to truly be loyal to the MCs parent, and thus to them, just like Jeremiah. Arc is like a combination of Jeremiah and Mao. Also, Sakuya bound up is similar to when Kallen was imprisoned.

Watched last night, but writing now. That cliffhanger was surprising in the end of the last episode.

Finally the story about Ash, that makes everything clear. He has all the right to hate Norland... Juugo had a lot of peace of mind to stay strong in that moment.

This show had the potential to be good, but everything goes to fast. There is no room to develop the characters and let the plot breathe a little. It's better than Akito in its time, but it also suffers from the fact Code Geass was a show with a closed ending, and difficult to transform into a franchis.

Episode was nice, but in end I still only barely care about most of the characters, being discout Karen, Tamaki, Ogi and Todo.

Ppl who say this ep sucked, cry about it. Things got so interesting! Some ppl say that sakuya is a dumb mc but guys… she didn’t know back then yet that ash was gonna protect her regardless. Maybe she has been careless about using geass but all info about geass was destroyed, nobody should have known about the power in the first place so she just assumed that nobody would figure anything out. A theory: what if roland has always known about geass since the last war or is a geass user but has obviously never made it known, explaining how he knew about sakuya usung geass on multiple people?

2nd best episode of this anime. Sakuya rose to Lelouch scumbag levels with the way she misused her geass. To her credit, she figured out a lot faster than any other Code Geass character that manipulation should be used properly. Unfortunately for her, the story calls for her to be the damsel in distress now. Another role Lelouch did well.

Ash Phoenix basically had a flashback like the one in the Helck anime, just without the insane twists that one did to justify a strong kid protecting a weaker younger brother. It's not fair to compare a shell of a story to Helck level storytelling, but the story beats are very similar. It just lacks elegance. Even Ash's anime stereotypical "It's all my fault" stuff weakened all the other stuff they were trying to do with his assassin backstory.

Also, just how old is that guy that shot down the Damocles? He's kinda like Kakashi between Naruto part 1 and part 2.

Jugo Sumeragi was just a anime papa, but he had more charisma than anyone that has appeared on screen in 7 episodes. He proudly continued the anime tradition of anime dads being much cooler than their children. Lelouch excepted of course. I wish he had an opportunity to be more than a greatest hits collection of admirable traits, but 12 episodes just isn't long enough for this guy to get a proper shine.

Also, what kind of mecha gun can shoot a human being and not turn them into chunks of flesh? They went halfway with the Sumeragi torture. If the nobleman is gonna shoot him a bunch of times, then say less. If we are going the Tomino trauma route with Sumeragi, do that instead. What we ended up with diminishes the character for a lame plot point.

One positive of this episode is Ash has been murdering his orphan best friends after they got brainwashed/chose to do awful racist and murderous things. I do wish they dropped better hints than what we got before this ep, but the reveal was still handled fairly well.

I liked the episode mainly because of the reveal at the end, but I dislike how they rushed through Ash's backstory in a single go. It would have been better if they had revealed all of this throughout the first six episodes leading to episode seven which would feature the prison scenes and THEN the reveal. Anyway, a small nit pick, but I am enjoying this a lot.

Ash backstory which is connected to Sakuya through Jugo, tragic really. Sakuya getting hit with the guilt of what she has done but no time to even talk with Ash as she got captured. Given how things were going something was going to happen to her and she was being reckless as well which she got away with thanks to her geass so far but this time it didn't work. This will leave the resistance group and Ash in confusion.
