| Heheh, not gonna lie, I cried there too. I accidentally saw the title of this like 12 episodes back and was trying to pretend it wasn't real! Hope Butterfree has lots of shiny children. Bye Bye Butterfree! Ima make it a personal goal now, to catch a shiny Butterfree some day. |

| Things happen fast in this anime. From first caught to first released pokemon, it's episode 21 and it's already time to say goodbye. Caterpie evolved fast, and it's already gone. It would take around 150 episodes in some anime. It wasn't too dramatic because it was short/brief and fast. |

| This episode is one of the best this season. I don't remember if it made me cry, but I did feel nostalgic. Butterfree was Ash's first pokemon, and will leave a gap even if they don't mention it again. |

| ...I'm gonna be that guy. This episode is freaking stupid, lol. First, Rocket Gang: 1) The Butterfree are getting captured and... the other Butterfree do nothing. Not even try to fly out the net's vicinity or try to fight. 2) The net has a huge opening in it! They can just fly out! Of course none attempt it. There's not even a scene or comment about how they can't because of the wind pressure caused by the helicopter's speed or something. 3) Takeshi's mentions that Trainers come to have their Butterfree mate. And yet... NONE of the other balloons' occupants do anything at all. No yelling or attempts to have their Butterfree fight back. Why even have the other balloons exist if they serve zero purpose? Even if most of them weren't Trainers there's just an outright lack of giving a crap. Might as well just make all the other Butterfree wild. Now for the real meat: As mentioned above, Takeshi tells Satoshi that Trainers come this specific season to release their Butterfree for this. And Satoshi doesn't go, "uh, wait what? Release?" Not to mention, what kind of sense does that make? Why would you release your Butterfree after doing all the hard work of evolving them for no benefit? What do humans get out of being "Butterfree trainers" if they end up releasing them just so they mate? There's no proof the Butterfree are happier about it. Just that there's more Butterfree in the future which... is kinda unnecessary unless the anime is saying Caterpie can't mate, lol. (I know, I know, breeding is Gen II but still.) Plus, why wouldn't there be breeders who do this specifically for Butterfree like we do with animals? Those that ensure you keep your freaking pokemon after its done having sex? This ritual would make more sense if its for those that no longer want their Butterfree. But the way the show sets this up contradicts this because Satoshi did want Butterfree, but the writing forces him to give it up. It's never said that Butterfree has to breed or it'll die or get diseases/illnesses or whatever. There was no real pressure for Satoshi do this other than he had no idea what it actually entailed until it was already too late. (Not the episode does a good job showing that.) Heck, even Butterfree didn't want to leave! It wanted to stay with both Satoshi and its girlfriend! Frankly, this entire ep feels like the writers are trying everything to get rid of the pokemon before Satoshi learns Butterfree can know psychic attacks and ends up being OP (for the time). That and to make sure he ends up with an empty slot for the plot later on. Because of that, even if the ending is sad, it's a fake sadness because it literally didn't need to happen. |

| I'm gonna be a grouch because I can; I find this episode to be literally one of the most forced sappy episodes of any anime I've ever seen. I literally don't understand why almost everyone who watches the Pokemon anime says that this episode made them cry or why they rank it so high on their list of favorites. Butterfree had only been in the cast for less than 20 episodes yet the way some people talk you'd think it was in the cast for years or something. Plus it only battled a few times and was pretty much out of the picture for 70% of its time in the show. How do you get attached to a cartoon butterfly that barely did anything? |
| Sorry to say goodbye to butterfree. not only because he was very close to Ash, but also because it was one of his most imbalanced Pokémon, only Pikachu is stronger. However, if we omit the farewell drama, it seems that the scriptwriters' imagination is already starting to dry up and smoothly turn into a filler. Despite this, my rating of the episode is the highest. |

| Bye Butterfree. This means Ash has a free slot for a new pokemon. Ash really grew a lot this episode. Stupid how Team Rocket managed to catch the Butterfrees lol, only Ash, Misty and Rock chased after them, all the other trainers just watched how they caught all the butterfree's lol. |
