Decided to give this Gundam another chance. Last time I dropped it after 15 episodes.

This episode felt extremely fast paced.

Very fast paced, yet no Gundams. I had to check to make sure this was indeed the first episode. Remarkably different from every other Gundam show I've seen.

At first I really thought it was a mistake or something. I really like that it's different, but I hope that there will be more Gundam action in the future.

yeah I reckon it took several months for Loran's hair to grow that long in this single episode.

Actually the animation seemed quite weak to me, rough movements and inconsistent art. Though I can't really/not willing to make a better comparision with other late 90's/early 2000 anime.

They are not beating around the bush, are they? If they keep that pace for unimportant parts, it might be one of the few (or the only) Gundam to be worth the 40+ in number of episodes.

Wow. I cannot believe this is a Tomino Gundam. Very interesting concept and story so far.

Actually I liked it. It reminded me Brain Powerd (first episode was paced and pretty complicated to understand at first as well. Also maybe to some degree it was the same voice actor for Hime and Sochie or composer) and Escaflowne (mecha designs seemed resembling to me).

I'm pretty sure he knew he was being followed at the end there. Hell, he even looked in his mirror and saw the other vehicle. It seemed to me as though he wanted to be seen. Though maybe not. I'm surprised he was found out like that....but then again, despite their behavior pointing towards them being "spies", we don't really know if that's the case. They could be there to protect the planet for all we know.

Yeah, really. It's funny that you brought up Miyazaki because the art and clothing design really reminded me of one of his works, too!

This doesn't even resemble Gundam yet, except for the discovery at the very, very end. That said, it looks like it will be much better than the other Gundam series I've seen so far. :P The setting is interesting, but I'm not feeling engaged yet. Maybe when I know more about the story and characters, I'll care more?

I'm having trouble believing Tomino wrote this so far. Turn A is clearly going to be more political than action-oriented (which I don't mind at all so long as it's good~). I'm excited for this series. :)

That soundtrack is beautiful, the art style and character designs I am really diggin' and the story seems alot more interesting than the previous gundam series. I usually don't like fast pacing but I thought it worked well here, I feel like it captured the feeling of alot happening in someones life in a short space of time.

I have high expectations for this series. And yes, it reminded me of Studio Ghibli too!

Also, it seems there will be a love triangle, since Loran seems to "like" the blonde girl, while her sisters seems to like him.

I confess I'm a bit confused. I hope things will be explained soon

Beautiful first episode. That insert song in the end was like a cherry on top of the cake. Very much looking forward to this.

Also, the premise is a very interesting twist to the normal Gundam cycle.

Indeed it had Miyazaki vibes in it, and I liked it a lot.

An intriguing first episode with this industrial era setting (in the United States? Boston-ia). The time management is extremely well done thanks to appropriate jumps alowing you to fly through the years. The character-design is a bit flat, reminiscent of Victory (maybe due to them being born in the 90s) and the drawings/movements who could seem good earlier are maybe too low on certain occasions for 1999). Another mark of the year would be the CGI eyecatch.
Another big aspect of this first eps: the great soundtrack !

I don't understand how "it's not/doesn't look like Gundam" when we are obviously welcomed by a bunch of space spies landing on Earth to infiltrate its society before... well their people effectively colonize Earth (just hear Lauran's shout at the end).

5/5 Best start of a TV gundam since 0079!

I wonder why Tomino accepted to work under Bandai again (after the Victory experience) and how he managed to make a first episode without the titular machine.

(Finally back to Gundam, it took half a year but I'll have some fun readings again ! Can't believe I was too much in my X videos to notice it.)

The first episode made me feel like I was watching Fractale or some Ghibli movie. It's really nice and it really draws me in, though it doesn't really feel like a traditional Gundam anime. Heck, even G Gundam felt more like a regular Gundam show even though it felt like a super robot show.

I'm really liking this new feel though. Kind of fast paced but I think it's doing this to get the introduction over with quickly.

Finally after 19 years I am watching this damn show! Growing up, I always listened to the soundtrack here and there (my favorite from the OST was "Boys about 16") so it's nice to hear the music I've listened to actually being played during the show.

Great first episode and I'm digging the art style for sure.

Finally started this. I think this my favorite first Gundam episode together with Unicorn episode 1. I really like look and feel of this early 20th century-like setting, plus I find character designs quite appealing. Also, the idea of is also quite unique and interesting. Looking forward to see how it develops.

Thing I didn't really like was the pacing of the episode. Scene transitions felt kinda abrupt and overall was pace too quick.

P.S. Bless Yoko Kanno for her music. The song at the end was beautiful.

This first episode was an enjoyable oddball, I mean look to the first minutes, MC playing around like that, gets himself almost drown on a river just like that, felt a bit silly.

Liking the worldbuilding so far, a very promising start, it feels like a beginning on a rather large and exciting adventure.
This is also my second Gundam, after watching and loving IBO years ago, so I m kinda eager to keep watching.

Yeah, odd scenes in this initial episode. The intrigue though is very high. World building like you said was interesting, and I can almost see where this fits

Art is great. I do like it where the scenes/direction has a "modern" feel to it, yet still has plenty of charm for older style anime. Clean, but not sterile.

Nice designs (despite some animation shortcomings like the unsynced mouth movement in a couple of scenes with Loran) and steampunk-ish setting (with some weird cult going on). I lol'd at the town being called Vicinity. But why did Sochie need to cut those pigtails in ep. 1 already nooo. I like her either way though.

That gravestone to infants makes me smell something fishy.

No idea what that song near the end was about (and why Loran wasn't bothered by being followed). But it looks like he was trying to weigh down human souls by gravity and return them to Earth! I also remembered hearing some weird things about Turn A's place in the timeline (sometime in the far future or something of that sort?)

Anyway, this was certainly not something I'd expect from a first Gundam episode, in a pleasant way (looks like I won't be bothered by nearly every episode being half-filled with a non-important battle like in Zeta). And I appreciate the fact that Turn A started on Earth (not counting the landing scene). Those smooth vertical cut transitions tho. I should also note that there was a surprising amount of "nudity" in the episode (not much of course but definitely more than I expected to see - it's not like Char is around anymore to pose for that sort of thing).

People talking about "no Gundam" but how about that thing inside the mountain during the festival, huh?

A bit nervous going into this admittedly considering how acclaimed Turn A is within the gundam fanbase. I haven't seen a gundam series in about a year & half and I haven't seen a Tomino directed one since Victory in 2016 so a bit on edge and expecting alot.

There a real sense of child like wonder, adventure and innocence feel to this first episode, much like a Ghibli movie like others have stated.

Pacing maybe a bit too fast, but oh boy everything else is so good. I think Tomino really wanted to experiment with the Gundam formula and see how far from the original you can take it. The music is already fantastic, but that was obvious given the composer.

Glad to see so many positive reactions in this thread, as I couldn't help thinking people would be down on it while I watched it, just because there was no action. It really is an intriguing opening to a mecha show, but you can tell it was made with care and attention. Also, how the heck did I not know Yoko Kanno worked on this?
