THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
This episode begins a four-part adventure--probably the best sequence from the "Nadia" series, and certainly up there with Miyazaki's works. (Incidentally, during this four-part arc, don't be surprised if you find similarities between this series and Miyazaki's own "Castle in the Sky.") The adventure in which Jean and Nadia find themselves on an island commanded by a sinister group of soldiers and their ruthless leader, Gargoyle, is old-fashioned, emotionally charged, involving exploration and action at its finest. Tightly edited and directed with skill by Hideaki Anno and imaginatively animated, this sequence is a classic.

The opening of the four-part island adventure mixes real emotional trauma and tragedy with a touch of struggling for survival. After being shot down, Nadia and Jean struggle to outrun the aforementioned soldiers -- creepy figures who wear Ku Klux Klan-like hooded hats and shield their faces with ominous masks. Along the way they find a little girl named Marie, a cutie that is the spitting image of Mei from Miyazaki's "My Neighbor Totoro," who describes how her parents were gunned down. The bond between our two young heroes deepen as they smuggle Marie to a cave and are then forced with the heartbreaking decision over whether or not to inform Marie about her parents' fate. This is one of the most moving moments in the show. Meanwhile, the Grandis Gang has also ended up on the island and are taken prisoners by the masked soldiers, who call themselves Neo-Atlantis.

As a final note, this was the first episode where I began to appreciate Shiro Sagisu's musical score for "Nadia." His previous pieces were fitting but struck me as bland. Here his compositions become darker and ominous, and, at times, is sparsely used. This adds excitement and tension to an already involving episode.

That was a really touching episode. It looks like a great trio is formed! (group of four including King)

Every scene with Marie was heart breaking, especially that last one where they told her that her parents had passed away. Legit one of the best done sad scenes I've seen, Marie's voice actor is perfect. This episode was amazing and this show is overall tackling some really mature issues extremely well.

I've said this before, but I thought the English dub voice for Marie was excellent. Margaret Cassidy was about eleven years old at the time she recorded the part (Jean and Nadia were also voiced by 14-year-old kids), and she does, I think, a great job of bringing the character to life. Her performance sold me from the start.

By contrast, I'm not really a fan of Yuko Mizutani's voicing for Marie. I just found her too shrieky and harsh on my ears. IMO, Cassidy, I think, did a far better job.

Come to think of it, I haven't read much of the Jules Verne Voyages extraordinaires series, so I don't know how much is referenced beyond his more popular works.

Grandis is sure channeling Jessie as per Pokemon fame. Or rather, the other way around given their respective creation dates.

That moment when Marie was recollecting her parents' deaths was really well handled. It didn't even register to her as deaths. My goodness. I'd also like to highlight the moment when Jean leaves the cave they were sleeping in. He mentions he needed to do something before Marie woke up, and all he does is picks up a shovel before Nadia immediately understood his intentions. That was some great subtlety.

Neo-Atlantis coming this soon?! o_O They always reminded me of the Ku Klux Klan.
The Marie episode was really well handled. I always wondered why people couldn't bear her and Nadia.

5/5 Last little adventure before the big space naval thriller.

@Shocked Well, Grandis and Musashi/Jessie were both created after the same model(s).

I didn't remember the Atlantis guys coming in so soon. Nor there being such graphic violence against minors.

Jeez! What a change of atmosphere there is in this episode, which proved to be very intriguing, but also very tearful. Here's how the character of Marie enters the story of Jean and Nadia, I did not know this part of the story. The plot after the latest events and discoveries becomes much more interesting to follow. Finally we see the face of the bad guys.

Damn what a sad episode :/ quite hectic to see cold blooded murder in this kind of anime, but well it's quite nice actually as well! More mystery and a lot more character development!

Looking forwards to see what's next.

Damn, what a heartwrenching story. This enemy seems more imposing than any that have come before them thus far. Interested to see where this goes.
Agh, but Nadia disappoints me again by lying to the girl and saying "we might be able to find your parents there" after knowing fully well that her parents are dead...
Well, at least she manages to tell her the hard truth in the end.

Still, I feel like I'm starting to become a bigger fan of Jean than Nadia at this point.

So the main villains are more or less properly introduced, as it seems. Slavery, murder, opression of other people? Geez, what a group of bastards. Although I hope that this group will have more depth to them and not turn out to be bad guys for the sake of being bad guys

Well certainly an excellent episode albeit a rather heart wrenching and tone shifting one!
(Also, as a side note I think I will avoid reading comments in these sections since some talk about episodes/events beyond the one being discussed which is fine since these were made years ago but forgive me if I repeat some points already stated XD)

Before we get into that I should touch on several positive notes from this episode (before we get to the heart wrenching and breaking)! As always Grandis is a beauty in every aspect and her kicking back in her chill clothes style is no exception ^-^ plus she is also adorable here in both her exasperated expressions and when she prays to God 🤗 way too cute and her angry response was really adorable too X3 how could anyone hate one ounce of this lady! Especially when she blushes with happiness and hope at seeing the sea plane 🥰

LOL Nadia gets a bad chill when our villainous trio gets to happy hilarious XD but awwww, Grandis you do care about those kids that drive you crazy 😊 trying to mask your intentions under the guise of just caring about Blue Water yet you care about their lives and even blush as a result <3 and your reaction while angry you are still blushing so that confirms the heart you really have 😍

I did really like how concerned Nadia was with finding Jean after the crash and not just prioritizing King and her eyes really captured her genuine caring and relief at Jean being safe great touches!

But, then we get to the core of this episode as Jean and Nadia find some slaughtered citizens of the island. Murdered with their dog in cold blood with only their daughter Marie surviving and unaware of her parent's death. When Jean first realized it was blood and that their bodies are cold even his optimism cannot remain on the surface in the face of the tragedy of loss. Marie is an adorable little girl with a great cute kid voice by Yuuko Mizutani (who sadly passed away in 2016 at the too young age of 51 RIP your contributions to the anime medium will be remembered and continue to bring fun, enjoyment and emotionally resonate to many I know you did for me) but despite being a cute character she seems like a rather believable kid. From her actions, to her trusting nature and to her not understanding the concept of death.

I am glad Jean and Nadia told Marie what happened to her family this episode while trying to brace her for it (if there even is an easy way to break this kind of news to anyone). I really liked how Jean couldn't use his optimism to deal with this loss but that didn't stop him from acting and giving Marie's parents a proper burial. But, man when Nadia had to explain her Mother and Father had gone to Heaven and Jean had to explain that Heaven is a place you cannot go to and his determined answer that he never wants Marie to go there anytime soon (he really wants to protect her); and as Marie started to break down my eyes got pretty glassy 😔 poor Marie I am so sorry. But, I am sure Jean and Nadia will do everything they can to protect you and help you regain your smile while preserving and honoring the memory of your family!

But, the monsters that killed your family will pay for this cold blooded murder I am sure! They were pretty creepy and unsettling they looked like a bunch of chess pieces mixed with puppets. The masks and hoods really dehumanize them which is very fitting considering the absolute heartlessness they possess. They mentioned the Nautilus so I wonder if these guys are members of the Gargoyle or affiliated with them? I guess we will have to find out I cannot wait to see what comes next as this was such a gripping and emotional episode!

In the dub of NADIA Marie is voiced by an actual kid, one Margaret Cassidy at age 11. She does a fantastic job in the role IMO, and to me she sounds authentically more convincing to me than her Japanese VA ever did. No offense to the late Mizutani, but I thought Margaret sounded far more natural to my ears. As for Jean and Nadia, I prefer their voices in the dub version, too. Only issue is Jean's French accent is a bit iffy in at least the first couple of episodes, but he gets better and better at it as the show goes on, and I liked what Nathan brought to it. Meg Bauman does a consistently great job as Nadia, and to think she was only 14 at the time.

Episode that puts aside the comedy and becomes more serious, the plot is more and more interesting. As the narrative progresses the mysteries deepen further, I like it! The atmosphere is very gloomy, despite some flashes of comedy here and there.

I had no prior knowledge about this series going in and the dark tone of this episode certainly caught me off guard. Whew. Still excited to keep watching, but if keeps being this intense, I'm not sure the series is for me.

Im kind of rewatching this (DSL internet didnt exist back in the 90s: 5 kilobyte per sec and 1 hour did cost more than 1 Euro) and I probably didnt watch most of it on TV  when it aired. While it started with light humor similar to Team Rocket chasing Ash in Pokemon, this totally turned around super seriouis and tragic with this episode and it was portrayed so well. I really wonder how a child or pre teen reacts to this series.

While this episode, taken by itself, was pretty impactful, I do think it's a bit too much of a tonal shift from what came before. This is only the fifth episode of the series and already we've slid from lighthearted adventure to a fairly brutal depiction of a young child being orphaned, feels a little extreme.
