Synopsis

Middle school student Mirai Onozawa is dissatisfied with her family circumstances and, in a moment of frustration, wishes to tear everything apart. Unfortunately, these destructive thoughts seem to come true in the form of a magnitude 8.0 earthquake just a few moments later.

When summer vacation begins, Mirai reluctantly takes her younger brother Yuuki to Odaiba, where a robot exhibition that he wanted to go to is being held. However, while they are in the exhibition center, the fury of a major earthquake shakes the Kanto region; helpless, both kids witness the devastating power of this natural disaster as it brings the city to its knees.

In its aftermath, they stumble upon Mari Kusakabe, a motorcyclist and single mother who decides to help the young siblings. Aiming to return to their homes and reunite with their families, the group sets off on a long and hard journey through the decimated city.

In my opinion, this is a hidden gem. Would never hear about it if it wasn't for the Awards Winning anime category on this website, and oh boy, was this a journey I was caught without notice.

It is a story that was inspired by multiple simulations of what would happen if an earthquake of magnitude 8.0 would hit Tokyo, as I guess you already understood by the title, and it follows a sister from 7th grade, her little brother from 3rd grade and an initially stranger that also has a daugher (but not with her) trying to go back to their homes which are in ...

Mixed Feelings
What could've made this one amazing?

A girl and her brother are stuck far away from their home, while an 8.0 series of earthquakes hits Japan. It's such a simple premise, but instantly something I gravitate towards. Think on the potential for a survival story, for a real questioning of people's morals, and a true analysis of the state of society upon a true, natural cataclysm. However, the series chose to be too hopeful.

I'm not one to desire only horrors unleashed on a series that attempts to be hopeful. It's okay if what it wants to tell, is about the good in people, in how ...

It's just so boring. It started out interesting depicting a middle school girl in a rebellious age where she is very cynical about life. She's contantly talking about how she doesn't want to do things, and is on her phone all the time. She has a younger brother who is very positive, making her feel like an asshole for being short with him all the time.

After the earthquake, even after going through so much she keeps the cynical/negative attitude way too long. In addition, the pacing became really slow. This show is only 11 episodes, but it could have been half that from what I ...
