I decided on a whim to rewatch this series after watching it back in the day and scoring it a '7'. I didn't watch, or at least get far in the second season. I didn't remember anything really, so it's kinda like I was going in fresh. During the first few episodes, I wondered why I had scored it only a '7'. The show has quite a strong start, and I'm not sure if I just got worn out, or if the quality declined, but it just couldn't keep my interest toward the end.
This show is very clearly about depression, but also covers other things
...
like loneliness, dealing with loss, social norms, etc. It feels real in how the character acts. Now, I really hate people using depression as an excuse to not do anything, or waste their time, but the protagonist doesn't do that. He has all these feelings, but he still tries to be a stand up guy. He tries to do what he needs to do, and even goes to high school to try to not run away from his fears. Although we're meant to understand him, I'm not sure if we're meant to feel sorry for him. Throughout the series we can see him grow, and break out of his shell a bit.
There was another review I read that argued that he has no reason to be depressed. He has many people who love him, he excels in his career, and seems to be making good enough money. I think they miss the point of the show. It doesn't matter what you have, you can feel like you're wasting your life, and feel empty. Some of the most successful people end up doing drugs, or committing suicide due to not finding fulfilment in life. You don't have to be some poor homeless person on the street to feel depressed.
Anyway, the show has a strong start, but toward the end it just kinda was dragging a bit for me. Maybe the sort of pretentious dialogue, or the content stream of emotional speak was wearing me down. Maybe it just spent too much time on the parts I didn't care as much about, like the shogi tournament. I know shogi is used as a base to create situations and explain the protagonist feelings, but the actually strategy and matches don't interest me. I'm more interested in how the character will grow, and the relationships they form.
Overall, I did enjoy it, with a lot of the show being an '8' for me, and some toward the end being a '6', averaging out at a '7'. I'm going to go watch the second season now, and hopefully I'll finish it and leave a review for that one too.

I'll be reviewing the series up to this point, since I just rewatched from season 1 and never left reviews for those. Re:Zero has many flaws, which I'll go over in this review. Despite all of those though, it is able to consistently create strong emotional moments, and engaging fights that stand out among anime.
Let's start with the bad. I know people complain about Subaru, and how he's dumb, annoying, or other things. He is for sure annoying. The over the top poses and speech is portrayed to be endearing and quirky, but it's kinda cringe. The other characters always just laugh, but that's just
...
a taste thing I guess. I don't think that's as big a deal as just no one ever asking Subaru anything about himself. He just appears in this world not knowing anything, and people just freely explain, don't ask where he's from, what he's doing there, etc. He never tells anyone he's from another world, even when presented with stuff he recognizes from Japan. It just seems like a huge oversight of the author to not address it at all. They could have added a scene where he tries to tell, and is stopped in a similar way to his other ability, but that still wouldn't explain no one ever asking him about it.
The other thing is the character designs/fanservice. Overall, it's not super egregious, but there's a lot of specific character that are kinda just embarrassing. The first villain is basically wearing no shirt with her chest out. Doesn't make any sense to wear something like that for battle. A later character is portrayed as a young girl with just a large shirt on. They may sure to just barely have the shirt cover her, but also move it around a bit to make sure you know she isn't wearing anything under it. Like why do we need this? Another character is wearing pants so tight, they might as well no be wearing any. Like, these are supposed to be strong scenes, and you have characters dressed like this.
Anyway, You may have already seen the score I gave this and wondered how I gave it an 8 with all those complaints. Here's the thing, despite the complaints above, the show has a lot of really strong scenes. Maybe I'm just fooled by the nice animation and soundtrack, but this show could trigger an emotional response in me multiple times. On top of that, I always wanted to keep watching to see what was next. The complaints above keep the show from reaching higher scores, but it's still a very good show. I'm a bit upset season 3 felt like a part 1, and we may have to wait quite a bit for season 4. I'll for sure be watching it though.

Well, this season was continuing well along from the last season, developing characters and the plot in an entertaining way. It really just went completely random and corny toward the end though.
I'm gonna go over a few this from the season that just didn't sit right with me. This is mostly just gonna be me rambling so I remember what I thought later. It started going down when the culprit was revealed. Somehow her power seemed overwhelming, but I didn't get like it was earned or the other characters were doing their best. Like, are they really that weak? The most we got was one
...
guy turning into a bear. Even the cats, which were supposed to be pretty powerful, just rolled over and gave in.
The next is Morgan, who shows up at random and plays a big part on the final episodes. They originally seemed interesting enough, but the plot relies on her a lot and she kind of just shows up. It's convenient, and a lot of convenient stuff happens in this last part. The backstory was alright, but it kept revealing thing after thing that didn't seem hinted at at all. Like everyone's memory got altered, they have secret abilities they didn't know about, and even abilities they knew, but just decided to use now.
One big thing that made me feel it was just random and not thought it was the sacrifice plot. When the culprit gets home, she is on the verge of death. She's actually pretty much going to die and minuite, but Chose somehow entered her memories(with everyone else) and puts her back together. It's kinda cheesy, but not too bad I guess. It's just, after that she goes to the basement, and then it's revealed she was going to be sacrificed. She would have been dead already if not for Chise, and they didn't even come get her, she kinda just stumbled there.
After that the gang comes in, but they don't save her right away. They need her to ask them first. They really take that time too, despite it already being "too late". So much cheesy power of friendship so m stuff ensues, surprise guests, close calls, etc from here on.
It's just kinda silly. I like the world, characters, and fantastical nature of the show, but this plot at the end was disappointing. I'll still tune in though if there's another season.

Maybe it's just because it had a strong second half, but I really enjoyed this season. Unlike the first season, it's a bit more streamlined in terms of keeping to plot in one place. In the first season, you had a lot of short stories that grew the characters, but didn't always relate strongly. In this one, it focuses on the collage and the students, with all the plots weaving together nicely.
I know some complained about focuing too much on the side characters, but I felt they were all done well. I liked how they all had a fleshed out story/background with relatable issues. I
...
also like how the students interact with each other in different ways, and they all feel unique and fleshed out.
The story this time is more interesting as well in my opinion. Maybe it was due to re-watching the first season that removed some of the suspense from it, but I felt more compelled to watch the next episode to see what happened next here. I'm looking forward to now watching the second part, so hopefully it doesn't disappoint!

This one is a little tough for me, since the pacing of this show isn't consistent. The world is very interesting, and you learn about it gradually as Chise does. A lot of character designs are really nice, especially Elias. Their relationship, while a bit problematic, is explored in a way that perhaps highlights the problematic nature of it.
Throughout the show I really the world and fantastical elements, but was not engaged fully to need to watch further. They tackle a lot of temporary issues throughout the show, so you get some small stories. These all lead to character development though, so it's not that
...
bad.
Usually with a show that doesn't engage me fully, I would give it a 6, but this one had a few moments that pushed it past the edge. The overall vibe, and the select strong and engaging moments moves this to a recommend for me.

As others have said, watch this at least after ep12 of the main show. This is a prequel story frime Chise's childhood. It starts out slow, but we get all the mystery and emotion from the main series here as well.
There's not much to say here. During the first episode I felt it was quite a bit too slow, and even during the second I was interested, but still waiting for something to happen. The last episode synched it though, and I get the climax I wanted for this kind of story.
It's not required watching, but if you enjoy the main series I for sure
...
recommend watching this as well.

Man, I have no idea how to rate this. The show is your typical trash isekai with cartoonishly evil characters, a revenge plot, edgy protagonist, fanservice, etc. On top of that, it has heavy use of CGI which makes some scenes look like a video game sometimes. By all intents and purposes I should have dropped it after an episode or 2.
But I kept watching, and didn't want to stop. I'm not sure if I was just starved for some power fantasy story, but it hit all the right notes. I mean, I really didn't like any part with the classmates. They had no personalities,
...
and were very boring to watch. That was a small part though. The main character was a lot of fun to watch. Yeah, they are some edgy protagonist that constantly tells us he's not a good guy, but I couldn't always predict how things would go. The world and monsters are also not just generic fantasy, and have a nice spin to them.
I don't know, I look back on my list of shows, and I usually only give a '7' to something that keeps my attention the whole way through, and I can really recommend. This did keep my attention, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it. So let's just say it's at the top of my '6' rated shows. I do kinda hope it gets a season 2, lol.

For sure more consistent than the previous seasons. I got a little worried when it seemed like they would just have random episodes that don't move the plot forward, but they get into a good amount of plot this season. The downside is it doesn't really have the highs of the previous seasons.
The animation is still not great, but nothing as bad as season 2. It's got charm, and it does it's job. You still get lots of time with likeable characters. The main thing I dislike in this season is the fights. There's more of them, which isn't bad, but a lot of them,
...
especially important ones, always seem to fall into the same tropes. Either someone comes in at the last minute, or the character just feels like winning at some point, and works through near death to win. I want the fights to be a bit more interesting.
Overall it's still got the charm it had from the previous seasons. The finalle didn't wow me as much as the previous ones did, but it was a lot more consistent throughout and I binged it all. It's a recommend from me, I'm seeing this through.

It has a rougher start than season 1, but gets to the better episodes a lot sooner. If you enjoyed season 1 then it's more of the same, which is a good thing.
The new characters and backstory are good. The only downside is that animation seems to have gotten even worse, especially at the beginning. Like it's a slideshow at times, which I understand they probably did the best with what they had, but it's noticable. It was a bit funny when they had one battle be super low budget since it was through the eyes of someone hallucinating, but that got a bit of
...
as well. It fits get a bit better bit the last few episodes though.
It looks like the next season will be a bit more plot heavy, so I'm looking forward to that. As for this season, if you didn't like the first season I wouldn't recommend, but I did and this one is good too.

As others have stated, watch season 1 of Scissor Seven before this prequal OVA. This is just some backstory on two characters that won't mean much if you watch it first.
In terms of comparing it to the first season, it's not got much. It's nice to have a bit more backstory on some characters, but it was kinda implied a bit during the series and doesn't add much in my opinion in comparison to keeping it subtle. Also, some of it feels like it wasn't intended at the beginning, and they added some lore in later.
It's fine enough, I would say probably watch it before
...
moving onto the second season, although I don't really know if it's necessary. I'll come back and edit this after watching more of the series.
