Blue Thermal

Tamaki Tsuru joins Aonagi University in hopes of making friends, getting a boyfriend, and living a typical university student life. She decides to try out for the tennis club in order to make friends and avoid anything too athletic. But when she is distracted by a model glider during tryouts, Tamaki ends up hitting a tennis ball right at it, smashing it into pieces. Daisuke Sorachi, a member of the Aviation Club, demands that she pay for the damages.

Following the incident, Aviation Club captain Jun Kuramochi tries to goad Tamaki into joining their club, but Tamaki refuses. Not wanting to lose a chance at recruiting a club member, Jun orchestrates a way for Tamaki to earn the money to repay her debts and gives her a boyfriend in the process. While she joins the club reluctantly, Jun seems to have other plans for their newest member.

So I came in expecting to get some sport competitive movie , but no this movie leans toward Slice of life genre imo. Which is not bad at all but over time and toward the end of movie it start to feel boring.

Let's break down in each category

Story/Plot 6/10
This is the weakest part of the movie in my opinion, I'm ok with slowing start ,but it's never increase the pace toward the end. There is no sense of something at stake so there is nearly no tension at all which is kinda disappointed because it establish the competitive angle in beginning. And the ending ... feel rushed. The worst part is the sub-romance plot, It just feel unnecessary and in the end you gonna forget about it exist.

Visual 9/10
This is best thing about this movie. Every scenes is gorgeous The Animation of Characters, Detailed Background, Great Color tone. From the scenes on ground or when they are up in the skies, Everything looks great.

Sound 8/10
Kinda great go well with every scenes. I personally love the ending theme though (She's - Blue Thermal) , Lifting my spirit everytime I listen to it.

Character 7/10
The protaganists have great chemistry with each others and don't feel dull but every backstory of them feel left off and not impactful enough to convince me to believe in their decisions.

Overall 7/10
In conclusion, I still recommended everyone to watch it. The visual and soundtrack are good enough to help overlook the mediocre plot and have good time with it.

Mixed Feelings

I'll be straightforward. This anime has potential if it was presented as a 12 or more episode series.

It had interesting plots that was rushed and "resolved" or left immediately. It felt like it can be more if only it wasn't fitted into a movie. Now I haven't seen the source material but I'm hoping it has more than what the movie had offered. It has a potential to stick with you IF only all the arcs has been fleshed out but it instead became light and weightless, there's a chance people could be invested in it if this wasn't presented as a single movie. ... Also, the characters can be explored more had this been a series.

Good points, I guess is, as some had pointed out are the music, animation and the key visuals.

Would I recommend this? At the moment, No. But if you just want to out something up to fill the silence while you work, go ahead and try it.

Adressing an obvious thing first : I gave this movie a 5, yet I don't recommend it. I have only very few anime that I rated under 5, as usually if they don't reach that threshold, it's a drop for me. I never force myself to watch anything that is at least not mid. So unless an anime was mid just until the very few last episodes that makes it go under 5, 5 is really my lower limit, so usually not something I would recommend.

Blue Thermal had a lot of potential due to it's background theme. It's like Super Cub, Slow Loop, etc. in ... a sense that it's based on a non mainstream activity, and as such, not really covered by many anime (if none). As I enjoyed a lot those kind of anime, I gave this one a chance.

The thing with Blue Thermal is that instead of being a seasonal anime with the duration of 12-13 episodes, this is a movie. And that's where it hurts compared to any of these other non maistream activity anime, where it has :

1° Have enough titme to get into the ins & outs of the activity, which then makes the anime a somewhat "informative" anime, on top of a relaxing moment.

2° Due again to lesser time constraints, the other shows give you enough time & background informations about the different protagonists, so you can root for them or get at least some level of connection. Here you don't really care about anyone, while again the story is based about the feelings you may have for the different protagonists.

There, all is rushed, the anime doesn't give you any explanations of how the gliders operate, how the flying techniques work, the main girl has never flown anything and yet she has this absurd innate skill, and again due to time constraints you barely can notice the small hints that a decently long period of time has passed, she is almost instantly skilled at flying while you never see her learning anything, and the list goes on & on.
Fortunately, due to some Flight simulator gaming background, I have a very limited knowledge on how gliders operate, so I was able to get the main clues, but any lambda person may not understand anything about it.

The visuals are decent, while personally I'm not a fan of this mix of "fotorealistic" backgrounds with hand drwan animations on top of it. I understand the lower cost process, but again, that does lower my overall perception of the anime. Unfortunately it seems that we see more and more of this practice nowadays.

Conclusion : Overall, it's a frustrating anime movie, because all you can think of while watching it is all the issues with it.
Yet, it may really be a gem as a manga to read, because I have this feeling that all the negatives about the movie may completely be covered by the structure of a longer and more detailed manga, the movie doesn't have anything memorable about the audio, so you don't lose anything there (as opposed to a manga centered around music) and the animations are not top notch either, so here again, the manga could probably work better.
Not recommended, unless you really really need a weird anime entry to complete a grid game.
